Next part of my X-Men franchise rewatch: The Wolverine
With one caveat: This one’s not actually a rewatch. I somehow entirely missed this film when it came out in 2013 (I’m pretty sure I was living out of a backpack at this time, which should tell you enough). Anyway, here are my thoughts from my first viewing.
1) Damn. What an opener. Lends further credence to my understanding that Logan was never actually a bad dude who needed much redemption from his evil ways. Sure, he was a soldier, and he definitely killed a lot of people. But he WENT OUT OF HIS WAY to save that Japanese officer.
2) Famke Jannsen really was the perfect Jean/Phoenix, wasn’t she? Still a bit weirded out over Logan’s fawning over her. YOU WERE NEVER A COUPLE, LOGAN, JEAN WAS WITH SCOTT.
3) That chick in the gear shop was totally making eyes at Logan, even looking as rough and hermitty as he is. Same, Gear Shop Chick. Saaaame. Hugh Jackman is fiiiiiine.
4) Logan being a remote Canadian small-town vigilante might just be my favorite superhero premise ever. More this, please, superhero genre! Though, damn, if he hasn’t gone a bit Rorschach on those guys in the bar…
5) A samurai sword is probably the most superfluous gift you could give to Wolverine.
6) Wolverine being afraid to fly actually makes a lot of sense. Unlike most people who would die pretty quick in a crash, Wolverine would survive it. In a most horrific manner.
7) “Hip replacement”. LOL.
8) Those old tub ladies are way too into this.
9) Yukio is also way too into this.
10) It occurred to me that Logan has always been such a compelling character because of his unique relationship with death.
11) Yukio’s mutant powers include predicting deaths and Plot Exposition.
12) I always like seeing a good parkour scene in action flicks. Japanese Hawkeye is ‘aight.
13) That bullet train action scene was truly great. You know what? X-Men movie action scenes—even in the “lesser” X-Men movies like this one—consistently outrank those of the MCU. More creativity between setpieces and character powers, better dramatic flow. I just love them.
14) I love how much of a fish out of water Logan is in Japan. Comedy gold. Logan’s just a humble Canadian lumberjack/soldier/art professor. He has no idea what the shit is going on in this country!
15) Ok—this Jean Spectre thing is growing on me. Good way to show Logan’s internal conflicts. But also props to Famke—she’s definitely playing her like Logan’s “pedestal Jean”. Not the real Jean. Makes sense.
16) YES! LOGAN GETTING BACK TO HIS LUMBERJACK ROOTS!
17) Mariko is very into Logan’s whole damaged-world-weary-warrior thing. Same, girl. Saaaame. Though being Wolverine’s girlfriend is certainly an occupational hazard. Adamantium claws and night terrors = bad combo.
18) When you realize that from Mariko’s perspective, she’s getting it on with a childhood legend… like…. is this still... kosher? I guess it’s not as weird as Logan’s connection with underage Jean in Apocalypse? *sigh* Being as old as Logan, he can’t really catch a break anywhere, I guess.
19) So if Logan’s healing factor is powered-down right now, how come his hands aren’t bleeding every time his claws come out?
20) So I’m for Logan have sweet, healing sex with Mariko. Lord knows he needs it… but OMG aren’t Logan and Yukio just the cutest friendship ever? I love it when Logan gets drawn out of his curmudgeon-ness and makes friends. :) Like, he brushes people off a lot upon first meeting, but one he’s friends with you, he’s FRIENDS with you.
21) Yukio mowing people down with that blade-zamboni of death. Goodness. O_O
22) Oh my god, the villain monologuing in this third act…
23) Well, yeah, the third act was pretty shitty, but I liked Mariko killing her grandfather by throwing one of Wolverine’s severed claws into his head. That was a nice touch.
24) Wolverine is so shouty and grunty all the time, I just love him. SO MUCH GRUNTING.
25) Jean’s “I’m all alone here…” Oh my god. YOU WERE WITH SCOTT. YOU LOVED SCOTT SINCE YOU WERE A TEENAGER. Yes, I know this is really Logan’s inner monologue and not the real Jean, but still, LOGAN YOU KNEW JEAN WAS AN UNREQUITED CRUSH AND SHE AND SCOTT WERE A LEGIT LONG TERM COUPLE. And Logan is pretty damn cute with this Mariko lady.
26) I just realized Logan literally had a “Harry at Kings Cross in Deathly Hallows” scene and I’m laughing over that comparison.
27) DAT MID CREDITS TEASER SCENE THO!!!!! *sigh* I kind of wish we’d got a bit more of Charles, Erik, and Logan teaming up against Trask Industries and the Sentinals before meeting up with the rest of the X-Men in DOFP. 28) Final thoughts. Solid superhero movie. Not one of the best, but solid. Miles better than the Thor standalones. There were a lot of things I liked about this movie, but it definitely is a bit underwhelming. I am a bit in love with Wolverine, so it’s nice to have another feature length film of him doing what he does best in a not very nice fashion that isn’t Origins. :P And grunting.
