A few weeks I spotted these bachelor stallions sparring out in the desert on the eastern part of the range. Nothing serious and I like the give and take. The really pretty roan is the younger horse - he was hanging out with two chestnuts, one of whom had no interest at all in the shenanigans these two were up to. It’s always fun to see these mock battles which tend to go on for much longer than a serious fight, and also don’t take place near young foals, unlike the more high stakes conflicts. The action and the horses seem quite engaging and I hope you enjoy them. Funny — my last post showed Odin’s band from a year ago. Then yesterday, as we were walking the dogs we came across... Odin’s band AND Jupiter’s band, sharing a bit of grazing land by the water in Scripps. I was shooting a few pictures and I sensed something behind me — it was one of Jupiter’s babies and he was definitely ready for his close-up. I love just looking at his little nose twitching and his beautiful eyes and his shaggy winter coat. There are also a few more videos if you swipe - 2 is the adorable Honeybee and 3 is Comma and Bragi, plus some pictures ending with a nice shot of Odin himself. I’ve been looking for this band for over a month and there they were. More from the Monday foray into the snow. My last post focused on the pretty face — here are some of the others, also lovely in their winter coats. No. 5 is a good scenery shot. Horses, like all ungulates, keep warm by eating — their digestion acts like an internal oven, which is why they’re almost always munching away in the cold. Shooting southeast - the sky was going from orange to pink and the whole valley took on this rosy hue — you can see the change from the center pic to those on either side about 5 minutes — honestly I’ve never seen the valley itself go so pink like this before. This is where some of my stills below are taken as screen shots. It’s about a minute of horseplay among the stallions of the bachelor band, who follow the harems in hopes of getting a mare of their own. The two youngest are the pinto and a dark bay, and they played for quite a while. When they start up it gets the others excited and they try to join in. There’s one guy taking a dust bath too. My dogs got out there for a moment as well - the big one, Hueco gets all excited and then @chiquita_of_the_desert has to join in. I ended up putting them in the car so they wouldn’t get killed, as you’ll see in another video. BTW, I was sad to see that a member of this stag party is Chief, which means that his wing man bff, BigBay must have tired of his role as second banana and run Chief off.
