Of Jedi and Force and fangirling
Seems like I’m having some sort of writer’s block since it’s been surprisingly hard to start this blog sort of properly. Well, I guess it’s better to have such in the beginning rather than having a good start and then being forced to disappear/have a pause of writing. But here I am! Today I wanted to tell how did I become a Star Wars fan. The embarrassing truth is, I saw the movies really late, not before last year. My boyfriend had been talking years that I should see them, even for the sake of common knowledge if not a pure enthusiasm. I actually find it a bit odd I never wasn’t that interested in seeing them, for I really liked space as a theme (eg Lilo & Stitch) as little. Perhaps it was the “war” that kind of scared me and the fact I was never really into sci-fi; fantasy has always been more kind of my genre. All I knew about Star Wars were the names of Luke and Anakin Skywalker and that Darth Vader is Luke’s father. Well, what do you know! In March 2016 my boyfriend finally got me to watch ANH. I found it quite good but a bit boring, too and didn’t become a fan yet then. In the autumn he then showed me ESB and RotJ and after that, I was sold. (Return of the Jedi is my personal favorite.)

Almost imperceptibly, I started following fan/meme accounts on ig and got buried deeper and deeper into this. However (the so-called true fans probably find this quite embarrassing), it wasn’t until the prequels that the fangirling stage completely stroke :D I remember telling my boyfriend -when he asked whether I’d like to see episodes I-III as well- that the original trilogy felt so flawless I didn’t know if I wanted to see the background for them. But eventually in December I finally wanted to see them and we watched all the prequels during one weekend. PM was, well, my fellow fans know, AotC something in between and RotS actually quite good. I certainly agree they could be a lot better and some of characters were, sadly, just wasted, but I don’t think the prequel trilogy is that bad. And I can’t understand the utter hate against them and/or Hayden Christensen (imo he was not bad, and it’s not his fault he was given such crappy dialogue etc). But, Ewan McGregor’s performance as young Kenobi was the saviour of the prequel trilogy and he made Obi-Wan my absolute number one fav character in the whole universum <3
And, at the latest at that point, I was hooked and have been ever since. During Christmas break I watched TFA and within a week of that went seeing Rogue One in the cinema. Both were good, and I’m soooooo excited of episode 8! Oh and last Christmas I actually asked my dad why didn’t he ever show me Star Wars for he and my brother anyway had watched them many times, and we had the old ones on VHS. He answered that “I thought you probably wouldn’t be interested in them” :D Which is a bit true nevertheless, because I was so into other things (such as The Lion King) as teenager. But I still wonder how come I don’t even remember for example when the prequels came to the theatres :D And now I’m like “where has this thing been my whole life?”
I never actually thought I could become this hard fan at so “old” age :D I thought I had already found my fandoms (mostly Disney) and even though I’ve always liked fantasy as a genre, even LotR universum didn’t cause this big impact on me. Even though Harry Potter has been a huge phenomenon for my exact generation, it’s never been that big thing for me. I’ve read all the books and seen the movies and they’re great, but that’s it. This SW hype of mine has been constant since last December and can’t see the end in the horizon :D

And how deep am I at the moment? Well, while exploring the endless sea of instagram, I once ran into a hashtag of ‘obidala’. I found out what it was, then I ran into obitine. “Oooh, my fav character has a love affair!” I then asked my boyfriend to show me the Clone Wars movie but for my disappointment seeing this Obitine required watching the animated series! My first thought about the CW series was more or less “why the heck do something like this”, and honestly, the movie wasn’t really good :D But, since I can’t do anything incomprehendly, I decided I would watch all the Clone Wars. Started last summer and now I’m going somewhere in the middle of the fourth season. And it’s actually a good show! I wonder if my boyfriend ever regrets showing me the movies but he seems just happy that I became this enthusiasted.
(But I’m not sure if I can ever forgive him for spoiling me that Luke is Leia’s brother! It went like this: we were starting to watch ANH and I asked the name of Leia’s father/king of her home planet. And he could just have answere Bail Organa but no, he said Vader!! He told he had thought I would have known such commonly known thing but na-a (why would I ask if I knew?) and I was so mad at him. Damn.)
