What fucks me up about Katya’s death scene is that we Know it’s going to happen. We know, Goncharov knows, and we have the same amount of power as him to stop it. The moment his watch stopped, she was already dead, and this coming off the heels of the boat scene where she was in so much danger but we had the rhythmic tick of the clock to reassure us that she would make it.

And then. And then. And then. It stops. And we see Goncharov look at his watch, look at this gift that symbolized the steadfastness of their marriage, their loyalty to each other that lasted long after the love was drained away. We remember how at the beginning of the film, there was that one off-hand line about him putting off the watch’s regular maintenance, so sure he is that it’ll keep ticking. We see him try to start it again, but it’s too late.

Obviously, there’s no way he can possibly actually know what’s happening to Katya in that moment, she’s so far from him, but just watch his expression in that scene and it’ll break you, I promise.
