Finishing off the BLAD

The feedback I received was very well-thought out and I applied them to my BLAD. Mostly, it was just subtle paragraph changes and use of imagery.

My final Contents page used the sideways asterix instead of just a plain title, to give the page that little bit more imagery. I also used the asterix on the side of the titles for an extra bit of colour and which looks nice against the white.

The next page was the Auckland region set of pages and I kept the same header page (the orange one on the left) for all of the regions pages, except all of them had white titles and the background colour matched the theme of the region. Orange for Auckland, blue for wellington, black for christchurch.

For this set of pages as well as all the other design agency pages, there was a similar theme. A picture, title, imagery, and body text. I shuffled these around a little for each page as to avoid repetition. Again, the colour of the region theme is evident in these pages, so the title and top text in the corner of the pages are these colours.

For the Studio Nine page, I'd originally had a few more asterixis in the corner, but my feedback suggested I remove them in favour for having an asterix already on the left page, and to avoid repetition and unnecessary clutter on the page. I still feel that the Studio Nine page is a little bit bare without it, but having it with it looks a little bit too much anyway. When you're looking at the double-page spread all in all, having the asterix on the left is a nice touch.

I was a bit concerned over the overlapping of the White Rabbit title over the image, but when consulting the lecturer I was told it actually looked nice, and that it didn't matter if that same overlapping wasn't used in the rest of the publication. When I moved the title over to the right instead of overlapping, it actually looked a little bit off, which is why I opted for the overlapping instead.

Here I used two asterixis. I would've removed the one on the left because it was very big and in the way but removing it unfortunately left a very large amount of negative space that I didn't quite want.

The same header on the left was used for the Wellington region. Having the Ocean Design page on the right be smaller than a normal page size made for a nice contrast to the WGTN which was high in the left corner. If I put the image for Ocean Design at the top of the page it would've made weird negative space at the bottom of the page, because the WGTN page doesn't fill that out and I had to contrast it.

This DPS I kept somewhat the same, but I moved the asterixis around and fixed up the body copy. Other ideas for this page were to remove the guitar image and put all the body copy into one side of the page, but because there weren't many other design agency pages that had double page spreads I thought this was nice to have as a contrast. Again, the top text in the corner of the pages are blue, as well as the headers and imagery because we're looking through the Wellington section.

The Christchurch section of the BLAD is dark grey. For the ALT Studio page, this was another case of the overlapping imagery over the side of the page instead of having just a simple rectangle. I made it overlapping the edge because I didn't want every single agency page to be the same and have the same layout of the images. So, breaking the grid here is a nice contrast to the other pages, and looks rather nice against the CHCH header. Looking at this now, I wish I fixed the body copy a little bit more because it looks like its rounding off at the bottom.

The larger image on the right was kept from the previous version of the BLAD. I initially removed it, but again, having that double page spread of ONE agency was a good difference to shuffle the layouts of the agency pages. I think I should've tested out using that bigger image for the entire page, because maybe it could've looked cool, but anyway having that negative space is still good to have and sets up that design system. At this point, I wasn't quite making enough different iterations because I was tired.

Friday Creative was a studio I added later on into the research process. It wasn't on our initial research pages. I needed another Christchurch design agency to fill in the last page and there were too many Auckland agencies that would've made the pages outnumbered and on an odd number (because I wanted the big header pages to be on the left of the DPS's).

The acknowledgements page was something that I didn't think about making until the last minute. That page would've been filled out with another design agency, but with the BLAD it seemed like an appropriate thing to have. I used the same style as the Contents page to avoid clashing with the white of the design agency pages, or the header pages. I also used the same sideways asterix for the title there. Looking at this now, I should've made the two bod copy columns the same size. I think I was planning on doing that, but forgot to edit it for printing. I like the use of the smaller asterixis beside the bolder heading type like I did for the contents page. Its good to have the orange as well there to ease your eye from the straight black on white colours.
