Ook in het seizoen 2023-24 is er weer een mooie serie klassieke concerten in het Koetshuis van Kasteel Keukenhof. Kasteel Cultureel biedt een podium aan jong, veelbelovend talent van onder andere de Academie Muzikaal Talent, het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag en van de Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie. Ook treden finalisten van de Young Pianist Foundation en het Prinses Christina Concours op. Daarnaast zijn er concerten door musici die hun naam al hebben gevestigd op tal van podia in binnen- en buitenland. Naast de dinsdagavondconcerten zijn er concerten op zondagmiddag. Ook dit seizoen is er een kindervoorstelling. Alle geplande concerten zijn inmiddels op de website te vinden. Ze staan ook in de flyer die op de bekende locaties als de plaatselijke bibliotheken te vinden zal zijn. De aanvangstijd van de avondconcerten is dit seizoen is vervroegd naar 20.00 uur. Op dinsdag 17 oktober wordt het openingsconcert gegeven door het ensemble Fadango. Met het programma Embrace’- fado & tango. De belangstelling voor dit concert blijkt zo groot dat het inmiddels al is uitverkocht. Het eerstvolgende concert wordt op 21 november gegeven door het gerenommeerde Viride Kwartet, dat momenteel de opleiding van de Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie volgt. Curtain Call the Concert - An Interview with the Creative Team of CCPAC
With live theatre slowly but surely coming back from the closures nationwide, companies like Curtain Call Performing Arts have been working hard preparing their upcoming seasons and finding ways to engage and entice audiences back into the theatre. With their collective creative energies, the Artistic Directors Kat Baranowski (she/her) and Danielle Viola (she/her) are bringing a concert performance of almost 30 beloved musical numbers for one weekend only! Steel City Girl had the pleasure of an online interview to discuss their inspiration and efforts in putting this concert together and reminding Hamilton what an incredible amount of talent this city has within it.
Describe the inspiration for this concert piece and how it was finalized by the production team.
After being closed for almost 3 years and doing a partial season last year we realized that a lot of our youth had been able to get back on stage, but our Passion Project Company (Semi Professional Adults) still had been on hiatus since we produced Next to Normal in 2019. We knew we wanted to host a fundraiser for the company to be able to offer more theatre opportunities for youth and to be able to create more professional experiences for our adults, we figured that the best way to be able to do this was to create a concert styled broadways review show that showcases our Passion Project adults while also raising money to be able to put towards getting Curtain Call back to where we were pre pandemic. After many hours of sorting through music, we landed on 29 full scale musical theatre numbers and a 1 hour 45-minute concert experience.
Hamilton theatre has an increasing interest from younger performers and how best to encourage their involvement as participants in community productions. How do you approach this as a company and what steps do you take to ensure aspiring performers have the opportunity to work with your company?
Curtain Call is mainly a youth musical theatre training ground, we host a variety of classes for students as young as 2.5 years old. Our main goal is to make sure that there is equal opportunity for students to participate, a welcoming and encouraging environment and a space where students can be themselves while participating in the arts. We really try to create a variety of different opportunities by offering full year programs, half year programs and summer opportunities at different price points; we have also been trying to develop a CCPAC scholarship that can provide assistance to families in need. As we progress and grow, we intend to put on a volunteer community theatre production every few years to also expand the number of students who can participate. We carefully plan out our season to make sure our shows are not only great shows to watch as an audience member but also ensure that our students are learning new skills.
What have been some challenges in creating and workshopping the concert performance and how have you overcome them?
One of our biggest challenges was trying to create our show list, at one point we had a document of over 50 different songs from different musicals that could have potentially made the cut. Choosing songs that would highlight the performers we had, entertain the audience and show a variety of different styles was important to us. We have ended up creating a concert that really showcases a broad variety of performances. We also have had a short rehearsal period, with limited rehearsal space; there has been lots of singing and dancing in living rooms until we started our tech week. We have had one day in a hall and then we will have a few days at Gasworks to get organized. Our cast is truly phenomenal, everyone has put their entire selves into rehearsing and creating all of these beautiful moments for the show and it really shows as we get into our run throughs.
How will this concert performance speak to Hamilton audiences or audiences in general?
Audiences are really going to enjoy Curtain Call the Concert, we might be biased, but between the talent and the concert lighting it is going to be quite a show. We really tried to stay away from just hearing a bunch of people sing songs, we want you to feel like you’ve been transformed into the musical for each number. We’ve worked on really becoming the characters from the musicals and have a different costume, lighting design and choreography for each number. Really the audience will be getting little snapshots of moments from musicals. The cast is singing some phenomenal harmonies and have really created beautiful storytelling moments. We hope that Hamilton audiences enjoy seeing local performers on our stage, they will see some familiar faces and some new ones, and that they are excited about supporting and celebrating theatre opportunities for all ages in Hamilton.
What have been some of your favourite moments putting this concert performance together?
Creating and working on this concert has been a great time! We get to work with some really talented performers who have all become our friends, some of them being past students so that has been really special for us. It has been a really long time since the two of us have gotten to perform in something together as well. We also get to perform songs from shows that aren’t possible for us to do right now or that are currently finishing their Broadway runs which isn’t something you get to do every day. We knew we had a strong group of performers going into rehearsals, but they have really blown us away by the quality of their work which makes us so excited for what's to come for Curtain Call and our Passion Project series. We can’t wait for everyone to see the hard work that has been put into this concert this weekend!
