CPOM CHOREO THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Has IAM.O turned out how you thought it would when you started the blog?
I think I was less critical than others of CPom in that first season. Looking back, I remember Charlie White saying that he didn’t get the music shift in the Wicked Game program and felt it didn’t hang together — I didn’t take that seriously because I never found DW’s programs or artistry to be compelling. (But easier to pick apart a program as a commentator than to actually provide your students with good material, eh?)
I always felt Scott and his team would do good work, but I was not optimistic that the teams he had would have the talent/tenacity to move up in mostly crowded fields in their home countries. I’ve been really surprised at the level of success the IAM.O team has had with their junior program as well as with the senior teams.
i thought Scott had the personality to be a good coach, he obviously brings a lot to the table, but it takes time to find yourself when you do something new, so i didn’t have any expectations of IAMO. it’s been a pleasure to follow though
Charlie made a Wicked Game long program for Vanessa James and M*rg*n C*pr*s in 2018-19. so he probably had strong opinions on it. it didn’t seem disrespectful to me. i’m like you, i'm not drawn to DW's style or most of their programs. but i did like the tango program MIDA made for Wolfkostin/Tsarevskiy this season. i think they have a fundamentally wrong take on who Gr/Pa are, though - putting Charlie choreo on Michael and not taking advantage of Caroline's dance ability, idgi. MIDA feels like they're operating skating-wise and music wise from the era they know - Charlie said he thinks all the time what would Marina do. well, Marina did that at least 10 years ago. but we'll see where they go from here
by comparison, IAMO feels more versatile and in present time. i think they *see* their teams, meaning they get who they're working with and are meeting them where they are rather than trying to mold them after themselves. and i appreciate that they recognize when they need to pivot and tend to nail the adjustments - like Haley and Nik's samba RD - the program was a little sleepy in the fall, but they got so sharp between fall and Nationals that season. or the work they've been doing on CPom's programs this season. you feel guidance with good instincts behind work that feels centered on the people who are going out on the ice. "do it like you can," rather than about getting them to meet an expectation
similar to what CPom were saying, i’m wondering if Scott’s thinking if he focuses on growing the teams in the right way, the results will follow. it’s been true so far

Marina anon --- Thank you for answering. This is how I feel also. I imagine if she is able to look objectively at past behavior, she understands she traded (in a way) her reputation (future teams trust) for DW's Gold. That might be an overstatement but probably not
I wonder if she regrets "abandoning" VM in 2013-2014? I mean I wonder if she realizes what she likely did for her career.
Oh, I struggle to think Marina would ever put that much responsibility on her own actions. Her stone-face during VM’s performances in Pyeongchang and then going up to P/C and (likely) saying she thought they should’ve won still tells me she’s bitter af and probably partly blames VM for the situation she’s in now instead of herself. She always thinks she’s right.
Oh I wouldn't be surprised if we see some Desperation moves to Marina from teams that had bad seasons. I expect her to start rebuilding her stable.
I don’t know who she could poach though. The first thought that came to mind was M/C to rival CPom with Igor. She could probably do wonders for their choreography and packaging that stops them fading into the background but as I’ve said before, their current coaching staff have been amazing with their technical skills and I don’t want to see that drop for them. S/F if they dare to leave Gadbois? Still, i think it’s too late for them. Maybe the Finnish team? They have potential. Otherwise, we get into low-ranked teams that probably are never going to progress too far. Or maybe some of the juniors that are coming up.
I believe she missed that power when she had it. I'm not sure how top teams might trust her again. Everything was better with Igor I'm pretty sure. I won't count her out but she does have a lot of work to do if she wants to be relevant again in terms of 2010 & 2014.
She could progress but I don’t think she’d ever get to the 2010/2014 golden era. And nor should she, she proved she can’t handle two rival teams like that and anybody would be foolish to trust her with that responsibility. Igor definitely kept the tech up when he was with her but the Lithuanians did prove in the RD that they can deliver a good technical (and Marina’s choreo in the RD and the FD is a breath of fresh air in the ice dance field tbh). I did wonder if she might try and sway P/C after the olympics to guarantee them complete attention as opposed to what they get at Gadbois. But as everybody says, they would almost certainly never leave Romain.

I feel bad for GrPa. To have such a successful breakout Olympic season only to lose their momentum (perhaps as people are suggesting due to programs) by moving to Olympic champion and silver medalist coaches even with a sixth place finish at their first worlds…who knows what happened if they didn’t move to MIDA. I think they took a big risk moving to coaches with no international elite coaching or choreographing experience (did we see any Charlie/Tanith/Greg choreo before MIDA? Maybe I should fact check myself there). It is not feeling like that risk is paying off
Charlie was establishing himself as a choreographer before MIDA - in 2018/19, he choreographed Wicked Game for Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres which had some buzz around it at the time, and he choreographed VM's RTR tour. there were other competitive programs, too. Not sure about Tanith choreo.
but Greg was coaching full time for years before MIDA - he's the most experienced of the 3. he was Madi Chock's partner before Evan until he retired in 2011 from competition. he was an assistant coach to Igor in Novi for years, then went to WISA, which is the connection to Green/Parsons, Bratti/Somerville and Cesanek/Yehorov, who all used to train there and moved to MIDA. i imagine he was making programs for teams at Novi and WISA too
Michael had been at WISA since he was 8 and left at 26, so that's an incredibly long time. he and Caroline teamed up in 2019, and if you remember their first couple seasons, their programs ranged from 🤷🏻‍♀️ to ick so the ones from their breakout season felt like a complete bolt of lightning. they said they did a large part of their own choreo for their FD, so they bring their talent with them. which makes that Rhapsody in Blue program that much more puzzling. MIDA has music tastes that feel like they come from a previous era sometimes. their programs have been pretty hit or miss so far
but that doesn't mean they won't learn. CPom had a bumpy first season at IAMO too, but they rightly got a reset. Gr/Pa can rewrite their narrative too, but it's going to be more uphill than they were anticipating

CPom!! Love this FD❤️❤️❤️ Mark Hanretty said the concept is of a couple taking a walk and moving back through time in different eras- starting with modern and moving backwards as the program progresses
A more sophisticated look for them with some striking pictures and memorable moments - MF and Madi choreo
