Creative Identity

According to Karwowski (2016, p.99), creative identity is an important aspect of the self and works as a mediator and moderator of creative potential and creative achievement. Identity being the common and not so common traits of your being, what differentiates you from others (Barker 2012, p.223). Creative identity is an extension to identity, a creative artist has an identity and then further has a separate creative identity. Monet’s unique creative style of painting shown in ‘Water Lilies’, has become his trademark or creative brand, separating him from other artists. Artists often differentiate themselves and their creative style based on their creative identity.

Creative Identity by Dayle Beazley

One’s creative identity is the declaration of one’s self through their creative pieces.

As an avid reader, I find that an author’s true opinion and message is typically shown through their work more often than through their interviews and social media pages. As a writer, I find that people are more likely to be open to opinion when it’s told through story. I feel that it’s my job to tell a story and make an impact and change, instead of allowing my readers to sit back as silent observers.

Day 4 of the #sellerchallenge with #EtsyNL is Branding. I try to keep this as simple as possible and go for a mixture of natural kraft papers and cards, pops of colour to reflect my paper cuts and simple white. I managed to put this branding together a few years ago, after always struggling to give myself a clear visual identity. I’m glad I’ve stuck with this one! Creative Influence.

Creative Influence is an essential element of the formation of an individual’s creative identity through which misinterpretation (Bloom, 1997, 30) leads to the formation of authentic and original ideas.  

The history of Rock music can be viewed as one enormous misinterpretation. From early rock pioneers such as Chuck Berry, whose concoction of the blues mixed with an up-tempo back beat rhythm, sent young guitarists like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton scrambling to learn Berry’s guitar parts note for note (Van Zandt, 2010) to bass player Larry Graham, who is credited with the invention of  “slap bass”, influenced by need of necessity, to fabricate the sound of the drums in a bass and piano ensemble (Liebman, 2012).

Comes from the two words creative and identity. Creative meaning ‘relating to or involving the use of the imagination or original ideas to create something’ and identity meaning ‘the fact of being who or what a person or thing is’. A creative identity is your internal representation of how you see yourself, a composite of your imagination, resourcefulness and genius. Your creative identity can help determine future decisions and projects.

Berkoff embodies the paradox of the subjective self by creating work which explicitly projects his sense of self through the prisms of his upbringing, his aspirations and creative influences.

The use of bricolage in developing work for his London Theatre Group in 1974 – using language of classical text to reconstruct a subversive new form (Cross, 12) – lends an inescapable authenticity to the work: despite overtly borrowing from the canon his plays demand to be addressed in their own right. Further, the works bring a radical aesthetic which rejects the convention of the Establishment.

All artists have a creative identity which portrays a specific image to the audience of their works. This image is reflected in the artist’s works themselves and also through the artist’s actions and ideas. As pointed out in our first tutorial, “art is a survival mechanism for any culture” (Ball, tutorial 1 2017)[20]. Creative practitioners tend to integrate their personal opinions and interpretations of social, cultural, and even personal issues as a way to explore these issues and to find new ways of understanding them. An artist’s creative identity can separate them from other practitioners, and also unify them through similar ideas and conventions.

Due to occurrences that have affected their identity, those aspects heavily sway how they appear as an artist. The Social Media Influencer and singer Dodie Clark allows her experiences of depression and depersonalization to move her music and aims to inspire and educate others, she has strongly connected herself as the type of artist who is open about her mental struggles and strives to highlight the low and high points in her journey through her music.
