Summary: It’s safer to be alone. Cyrus, once a devoted paladin and now merely a lone hunter in the night, had to learn that lesson the hard way. Harder still might be unlearning it, but if there’s anyone he trusts to guide him through it—and he trusts no one these days—it’s Wyll Ravengard.

“May I have this dance?”

Cyrus’ thoughts turned syrupy, slow to look down and slower still to register that Wyll wanted him to take his hand. “I… I’m no good at this.” Dancing. Intimacy. Romance. Any of it. All of it, by the Triad, why would Wyll ask him, of all people…? “I’m going to end up tripping us both, I just know it.”

Wyll’s dramatic bow relaxed, and he assumed a more casual, upright posture. His hand rose with him, not just stretched or offering but beckoning, and Cyrus thought of all the times before that he had felt that hand on his body. Glancing touches, the scrape of fingers against palm as they passed teacups and herbs, a lingering graze whenever Cyrus gave him new literature or songs or poems to add to his growing bardic collection, all incidental and (Cyrus could tell himself) accidental. The only sustained contact came when Wyll was dragging him back to his feet after a fight. When his vision swam and his mind numbed and Wyll’s hands under his shoulders were his only lifeline.

That had scared Cyrus the first time— less the touch and more its necessity. The only reason he had survived the last decades had been self-reliance, and before that, he had been young and stupid and invincible, and neither of those survival techniques worked in this third tadpole-infested life.

Not that he really had been invincible in that first life, but he could tell himself that the suffering was what made him worthwhile.

What made him worthy of her.

“Don’t worry. It’s not really about the dance. It’s about who we’re dancing with.”
