Topping the day in the Danderyd Challenger was the singles second-round match between fourth seed David Goffin, who yesterday defeated qualifier Marvin Moeller 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, and qualifier Alibek Kachmazov, who stunned Leandro Riedi 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 earlier that day. Considering Goffin's solid play when he is on, it could be interesting to see how A. Kachmazov's current form fare, especially since Goffin appeared more experienced. This match ended up boiling down to several moments, which went on and off as the match went by.
Three games in, A. Kachmazov's forehand error in response to Goffin's preceding backhand started his error spree for that game, where his forehand/backhand errors there caused Goffin to break early to 2-1. Goffin proceeded to consolidate that lead to 3-1, but Goffin's forehand errors several moments later resulted in A. Kachmazov breaking back to 4-4, where he also had his game points fumbled at that time.
Subsequently, after A. Kachmazov double-faulted, Goffin had a forehand pass that converted the said break point to 5-4, but his following unforced errors did not help anything, with a double fault resulted in the break-back to 5-5. Goffin fought back for his following break by trying to get through the lines, which resulted in A. Kachmazov's forehand error, and broke back to 6-5 thanks to his backhand return ace. Consequently, Goffin had his opportunity to serve for the match, where despite having to survive a break point at the cost of his +1 forehand error, he still took the first set 7-5 thanks to his forehand winner.

Danderyd Ch F: Maximilian Marterer [3] def. Brandon Nakashima [8] 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
Brandon dominated the first set through his shot winners, stemmed from his backhand before going after Marterer’s forehands to some extent, utilizing the open court with his volleys when necessary. However, Marterer started to get the idea at the second set since he found out his serve+1s often did not work when the rallies got extended, absorbing the pace and shifted the moment in his favor, trying to press Brandon further from the baseline before his balance went off even after his volleys. Since then, the balance became the further question in the third set, where Marterer could maintain his momentum from. As a result, Marterer could create 11 opportunities to break, 4 more than Brandon, although both players converted their break points twice in between the sets (except Brandon converted all of them during the first set).
In contrast, there was a tiny difference between both players in their service games. Marterer scored one more ace than Brandon (9 to 8), which carried him through several troubles and also contributed toward their equal first serve winning percentage (77%). Interestingly, both players double-faulted twice, but Brandon won 4% more second serve points compared to Marterer with a 52% winning rate, which signified the importance of the return games and the related pacing throughout the match, especially under pressure.
This marked Marterer’s second Challenger title of the year (after the Amersfoort Challenger several months back), securing his Top 100 finish by ranking 93 live by the time he won the title. However, for Brandon, this would make the Australian Open Wild Card challenge for next year a little bit tricky, because in the next few hours, Patrick Kypson will contest his Champaign Challenger final against Alex Michelsen. In this case, P. Kypson’s title would result in him taking the wild card, while both players’ runner-ups in their respective places would mean Brandon getting the wild card with 9 point difference (attained in the first week). This could be both simultaneously interesting and nerve-wracking for both players alike.

Marterer’s rhythm from the second set carried on to the third set, successfully bringing Brandon off balance from the baseline. It was even more visible in the sixth game, where after Brandon’s preceding forehand error, Marterer came up with an intuitive volley response that resulted in Brandon's failed volley to create his break point. The said point was immediately converted at the cost of Brandon's backhand error (4-2).
Afterward, despite having to survive several unforced errors and even having to face a break point, Marterer still held his serve firm to 5-2. It took two other games before Marterer had the opportunity to serve for the match, where he eventually sealed it (to 6-3) with a working serve+1 to win his second Challenger title of the year.

Brandon had his chances in the beginning of the second set when he had a down-the-line winner to Marterer’s insufficient responses to create his break point right in the first game of the second set, but Marterer proceeded to save them through his serves and held his service game 1-0. By then, the match also tested their clutchness on serve other than their point construction, where Marterer was able to pressure Brandon even more from, bearing fruit from those at the end of the set. Here was how the rest of the second set unfolded.
Marterer's baseline-based pressure started from his forehand side, where his cross-court forehand to Brandon's insufficient response created one of his break points of the fourth game even if some of Brandon's unreturned serves saved them to hold 2-2. Three games later, the case was almost similar, this time with Marterer's intuitive volley while trying to intercept Brandon's possible pass to secure his one-point lead. Eventually, Brandon's forehand errors led to the break point creation, but he still got out of trouble thanks to his unreturned serves at times to hold that service game 4-4.
Marterer proceeded by holding his service game to 5-4. However, the pressure he asserted while trying to absorb the pace started to take effect: his forehand pass, which Brandon responded insufficiently to with a failed volley, created his set point. Even though Brandon tried to save them with an ace, it was not enough due to Marterer's cross-court forehand let cord moment, which turned out to be in. As a result, Marterer took the second set 6-4, leveling the play to one-set all, settling who would take the title (and the Australian Open Wild Card challenge, to some extent) at the deciding set.

Eighth seed Brandon Nakashima, who defeated qualifier Alexander Blockx 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals to snub his 15-match winning streak, contested his first Challenger singles final of the year to ensure his Australian Open wild card position in the cut-off week. He faced an interesting challenge in third seed Maximilian Marterer, who defeated second seed Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 6-0 earlier in the semifinals. Knowing both players, this could be interesting to see the contrast of approaches to the game, considering Marterer often constructed his point as short as possible, while Brandon could nail the extended rallies through his shots at times.
Right at the first game, Brandon came up with a forehand passing shot after he tried to drive the rally through his backhand to secure his one-point lead before having a break point due to Marterer's forehand errors. Even if Marterer saved one of those with an ace, it was insufficient due to Brandon's break point conversion thanks to a working volley (1-0), followed by a consolidation to 2-0 from 0-30 down, where the damage was averted through his unreturned serves.
Three consecutive holds later, Marterer got his chance through a backhand pass to secure his one-point lead before Brandon's forehand errors secured the third seed's 2 break points, which eventually were saved for him to finally hold his service game 4-2. Subsequently, Marterer might have gotten outpaced and overpowered, marked by his forehand errors when he tried to finish the rallies, and topped by Brandon's working smash and a backhand passing shot to double the break (5-2). As a result, Brandon had the opportunity to serve for the first set, where despite a little hiccup earlier in that game, Brandon successfully took the first set 6-2 at the cost of Marterer's forehand down-the-line error, securing his aggressive start and for him to be one set away, technically, from the title (and the wild card).

Danderyd Ch D F: Julian Cash/Bart Stevens [1] def. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan/N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-7(7), 6-4, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
A little difference could be found between both pairs throughout the match, especially on return. The match was return-oriented enough for both pairs to come down to which pair nailed the pressure points more and used the rhythm to their advantage, where Cashvens had the balance necessary to stand out in the second set and the match tie-break. Even if Jeevan/Vijay tried to press from their first strikes as well, as evident in the first set tie-breaker, but it was insufficient for them to carry them toward the end of the other sets. As a result, Cashvens had 12 opportunities to break and converted 5 of them despite Jeevan/Vijay’s 40% break point conversion rate throughout the match.
On the other hand, Cashvens appeared a little bit more solid on serve. Scoring 7 more aces than Jeevan/Vijay, Cashvens won 11% more points from their first serves with a 69% winning percentage. Interestingly, there was a tiny difference in their second serves winning percentage, with Cashvens having the slight edge by 2%, winning 45% of their points from there even if they double-faulted 7 times, 2 more than Jeevan/Vijay implying the riskiness of the former's second serve, but it paid off at the end of the match.
This marked J. Cash's fourth Challenger title of the year, winning it with three different partners (once with Henry Patten back in Sarasota Challenger pre-divorce, twice with Robert Galloway, including a title in Malaga Challenger, and once with Yuki Bhambri), while this marked B. Stevens' second Challenger title after the Bahrain Challenger (with Patrik Niklas-Salminen). This could add interesting input to J. Cash's post-divorce doubles partner carousel after the divorce with H. Patten, but this solidified J. Cash's finish inside the Top 50 at 47 live.

The match tie-break became even neater once things kicked in. The first few points were intense with several mini-breaks exchanged in between until J. Cash's important smash in the 12th point after their service game hold resulted in their mini-break lead to 7-5, and they had not looked back since. Even though their match point was foiled thanks to Jeevan/Vijay's working serve+1, an epic match point conversion ended with J. Cash's forehand winner, even though B. Stevens fell somewhere in the middle after his volley, allowing Cashvens to win the match tie-break 10-7, as well as taking the title for their first Challenger title together as a pair.

Cashvens visibly stepped up their game in the second set, where they started with an early break thanks to their working volley to Jeevan/Vijay's failed volley error to set up their 2-point lead earlier before J. Cash's forehand let cord moment converted the said break point to 1-0. Even if Cashvens held their service game to 2-0 afterward, Jeevan/Vijay hung on by holding their service game 2-1, and had a backhand lob to set a one-point lead several points before they broke back to 2-2.
Interestingly, this part of the set became return-oriented just like the first set when a working smash from Cashvens several moments after Jeevan slipped post-volley opened the gate for them to start that return game, breaking back to 3-2 as a result. Somehow, Jeevan/Vijay created their break point in the subsequent game thanks to a working smash, converting it with a forehand return ace to 3-3, followed by two consecutive service game holds.
In the ninth game, the return game turned out to be in Cashvens' favor as they ended up nailing the pace well while optimizing the open court. J. Cash's backhand to Jeevan/Vijay's volley error was a gate-opener before B. Stevens' forehand pass to the open court resulted in the creation of their break point, ultimately breaking their service game to 5-4. As a result, they had the opportunity to serve for the second set, where they nailed their service game and had a 0-hold to take the second set 6-4, bringing the match to the further distance through a match tie-break to determine the outcome.

Concluding the day in today’s Danderyd Challenger is the doubles final between the first seeds, Julian Cash/Bart Stevens (hereby referred to as Cashvens), who defeated N. Sriram Balaji/Andre Begemann 6-1, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals and third seeds Patrik Niklas-Salminen/Petr Nouza 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, and second seeds Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan/N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth, who previously defeated Maximilian Neuchrist/Denis Yevseyev 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Johannes Ingildsen/Eero Vasa 6-4, 7-6(5) also in highly competitive encounters. Knowing both pairs, this could possibly be a close encounter, which turned out to deliver in one way or another.
After three consecutive holds to start the match, Jeevan/Vijay struck first from their forehand side, where they successfully pressed Cashvens from the baseline until the latter had to save 2 break points before Jeevan's smash secured the deciding point, where they eventually broke to 3-1 in the first set. Interestingly, Jeevan/Vijay consolidated their lead to 3-2, but Cashvens had other ideas from their return games, volleying their way to secure their 2-point lead before they broke back to 3-3 thanks to their swift forehand return on the break point. This was responded to by Jeevan/Vijay by breaking back again to 4-3 thanks to their working volleys, but Cashvens also responded through J. Cash's working forehand to secure the 4-4 break-back.
Cashvens eventually held his service game to 5-4, and then both players kept holding their service games until the first set tie-break became inevitable. During the first set tie-breaker, Cashvens initially had their momentum thanks to J. Cash's swift forehand return to Jeevan/Vijay's failed volley to 2-1 before they held their service games to 3-1. Somehow, they found their set points foiled at the cost of Jeevan/Vijay's unreturned serves and swift forehand return, resulting in the side-switching to 6-6. It took two other consecutive holds before J. Cash's double fault right at the end of the set resulted in Jeevan/Vijay taking the first set 7-6(7).

Danderyd Ch SF: Brandon Nakashima [8] def. Alexander Blockx [Q] 6-1, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
A. Blockx’s 15-match winning streak starting from his UK ITFs in the past fortnight will forever be remembered. It could have been due to all the tennis, but Brandon's power to his shots was so immense that A. Blockx ended up getting overpowered throughout the match, mostly from his forehand side. This was added by Brandon's baseline-oriented approach, which resulted in A. Blockx having to move a little bit more, resulting in his inability to come forward in most occasions like the way he converted 50% of his break points (out of 2 chances). Consequently, Brandon had a dominant showing in this match, converting 42% of his break points (12) to assert enormous amount of pressure.
Furthermore, Brandon also stayed solid on his serve. He stood out from his first serves with a 80% winning percentage compared to A. Blockx's 39%, which indicated its vulnerability during the pressing moments despite the latter scoring 2 aces than Brandon's 1. On the other hand, Brandon might have taken more risks through his 2 double faults, but he still had the slight edge from his second serves by having a 7% higher winning rate than A. Blockx as the match went by.
This allowed Brandon to appear to his first Challenger singles final of the year, also his first since the Brest Challenger 2021. Furthermore, this still keeps him in the Australian Open Wild Card challenge race along with Patrick Kypson and Ethan Quinn, the latter who will contest each other in the Champaign Challenger semifinals later today (local time), with the winner being in direct contention depending on Brandon’s final outcome. Regarding Brandon’s Danderyd final, he will face third seed Maximilian Marterer, who earlier demolished second seed Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 6-0 in the previous semifinal match. Knowing both players, this could come down to the pacing as a starter, as well as the point construction when it got extended, considering Marterer had a more succinct approach in the semifinals with his serve+1s. Might also be interesting to see how everything turns out here!

Brandon kept his baseline game solid by going after A. Blockx's forehands, to the latter's dismay since he was made to stay back and there were lesser rooms to even move forward somewhere. It often ended with unforced errors, which played a role in either foiling his own game point or Brandon getting a lot of advantage, eventually resulting in his double-break lead.
A. Blockx still managed to hold 2 service games, but Brandon's level was inevitable and was solid until the end of the match. The eighth seed then had the opportunity to serve for the match, where despite the double fault on match point, he still fired an unreturned serve to take the second set 6-2, eventually punching his ticket to his first Challenger final of the year.

The action in the Danderyd Challenger continued with the battle between qualifier Alexander Blockx, who contested his maiden Challenger semifinal appearance after defeating Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-0 thanks to his dominant performance at the cost of J. Mensik’s previous marathon match 24 hours prior, and eighth seed Brandon Nakashima, who stunned fourth seed David Goffin 6-2, 7-6(2) in a powerful showing. Knowing both players, this could be interesting to check on their balance, which might be the case during the setup until someone took control of the flow.
Initially, A. Blockx had a dominant start through his forehand side, winning the first point with a forehand winner while creating his break point with another forehand passing shot when responding to Brandon's volley to create his initial break point before Brandon's forehand error 2 points later resulted in A. Blockx's early break to 1-0. However, Brandon got the break-back (1-1) due to A. Blockx's forehand errors in an erratic service game. Brandon then held his service game to 2-1.
Since then, it all went downhill from A. Blockx, who got overpowered from the baseline through his forehand side as a start. Brandon's backhand down-the-line winner then opened the gate before A. Blockx eventually got broken to 3-1, with Brandon proceeded to hold his service game 4-1. However, Brandon started to have ideas from his backhand, putting more weight on his shots until A. Blockx missed his forehand responses, which resulted in another break of serve to 5-1. This allowed Brandon to serve for the first set, where bar a double fault on set point, he took the first set (6-1) thanks to an unreturned serve.

Danderyd Ch QF: Brandon Nakashima [8] def. David Goffin [4] 6-2, 7-6(2) Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
Goffin had his chances, especially while trying to step up in the second set, but Brandon’s baseline power helped him maximizing his chances, since they mostly drove Goffin into some unforced errors from the baseline, hence the foiling of 5 of his break points as well as Brandon’s 66% break point conversion rate from the first set. Somehow, Goffin tried to maintain his level in the tie-breaker, but he got overpowered toward its end after Brandon’s smash secured the mini-break, followed by a hold but Goffin’s unforced errors resulted in Brandon’s second set tie-breaker dominance, hence the outcome.
In addition, Brandon turned out to have a solid service game than Goffin. Scoring twice more aces than Goffin (6 to 3), Brandon stood out from his first serves by 10%, winning 86% of his points than Gofin’s 76%, coming in handy when having to face several break points (even saving all of them). On the other hand, Goffin had a slight trouble from his second serves since he won 5% lesser points than Brandon, who had a 48% second serve winning percentage, which was signified by his frequent +1 shot errors while trying to follow up while Brandon nailed his returns right after.
While Brandon set up an exciting clash against first-time Challenger semifinalist Alexander Blockx, who earlier defeated Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-0 in a convincing manner, Brandon put himself in the Australian Open wild card contention once he took Aidan Mayo off the race (the latter who had several deep runs, including being the Charlottesville Challenger runner-up two weeks ago as a qualifier), still remaining in the race alongside 3 other players remaining in the Champaign Challenger (Ethan Quinn, Patrick Kypson, and Aleksandar Kovacevic). Knowing A. Blockx being on a roll, this could be interesting to see how both players’ shot variety hold up, especially with the balance necessary to stand out in this match. This could be tricky, but should Brandon end up taking the wild card after a deep run here at the end, this could also be a catalyst for his comeback season after this.
