Ethan’s parents are Sumeru professors, his dad does Amurta while his mom is Spantamad’s Alchemy both being of Sumeru descent yet they lived in Fontaine during maternity leave where they had Ethan. Only when he turned ten did Ethan and his parents move back to Sumeru. At that point then, did he became a runaway the moment his family found themselves in Aaru Village and joined the Eremites by complete accident trying to get back to Fontaine from a stumper beast transport. Since then until Zola found him, Ethan has acted as a medical combatant for an Eremite group and mostly lived in Aaru Village.
