a new and quite more than adequate skinsman has been found who will not only fills Mr. Farragen’s shoes but is working out to be a greater asset to the band than Ken could ever have been because he is striving to achieve the same goals the rest of Anvil Chorus’ personel have sought after. Showing similar creative abilities, Joe Bennett, the newest member of Anvil Chorus as thier drummer extraordinaire, is fitting in very well. Bill Skinner is at the other end of the rhythm section, he is a major songwriting force in the band and sometimes bands his bass over to vocalist Aaron Zimpel to allow him to play keyboards in such pieces as “Once Again” and “Reluctant Hero”. Aaron is more than the singer/songwriter of the band, he is a multi-talented musician with many facets to his abilities yet to be seen in Anvil Chorus. Besides playing bass, Mr. Zimpel is also an accomplished guitarist, drummer, and he hits the keyboards, too. The vast area his talent covers allows for his imaginative songwriting to show innovation and

The line up is completed by the inclusion of guitar virtuoso supremes Thaen Rassmussen and Douglas Piercy who do some really great guitar harmonies and both perform excellently refined and melodic soloing. Doug and Thaen’s separate diverse styles compliment each other and shine with brightness when they alternate taking

Thrash as a primitive, earthy genre has given us many greats: Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel, Heathen and the like. But the more calculated, technical, and ultimately colorful inventors of progressive Thrash, a genre that blossomed handsomely after Watchtower’s debut in 1985, are what truly push the limits of Thrash and test its creative bandwidth. BLIND ILLUSION on their new album “Wrath…

ALBUM REVIEWS: Heathen – Empire Of The Blind – Nuclear Blast
All good things come to those who wait, and if there ‘s one thing Bay Area thrashers Heathen believe in, it’s making people wait. With a four year gap from their 1987 debut to the follow-up, followed by a nineteen year-long hiatus, a decade has now passed since The Evolution of Chaos (Mascot Records), so make the most of new album Empire of the Blind (Nuclear Blast Records) because who knows how…

Wednesday, March 29: Heathen, “Goblin’s Blade”
Heathen was maybe one Bay Area thrash band too many: although Breaking the Silence came out the same year Death Angel and Testament released their debuts, Heathen was more of a third wave act along the lines of Forbidden and Vio-Lence.  And while the album was perfectly executed thrash with nary a false move, it also didn’t really stand out from the flood of like-minded records coming out around the same time.  “Goblin’s Blade” had its qualities, foremost among them David Godfrey’s classically thrashy but not overly shrill vocals and the frenzied riffing of future Exodus shredder Lee Altus and Doug Piercy, and the song as a whole was a fun and furious mosher in fine late ‘80s style.  This likely went down a storm in sweaty clubs like Ruthie’s, as the tune fit in perfectly with its time and place.  But while in many respects that should be enough to make “Goblin’s Blade” something of an unheralded gem, that the song wasn’t much more than that ultimately confined both it and Heathen to also-ran status.

They play two pieces that will likely appear on thier debut single, “Once Again and “Blondes in Black”, along with the usual killers such as the great “Deadly Weapons”, an excellent instrumental entitled “Urban Pioneers” which was directly followed by thier old classic “Never Ending Night”. Other high points in thier set included “Blue Flames”, “Bow To The Church” and the evening’s encore, “Whisper of the Axe”.
The variety in thier set well demonstrated the versitility of thier songwriting abilit and thier instrumental talents. The great drumming skill of Ken Farragen was witnessed for the last time on that night. Sadly as it is, he has other goals beside musical ones he wishes to persue. Fortunately,

USGA gets creative with their groupings at Shinnecock Hills
Tumblr media
The USGA always has some fun putting their groups together for the national championship.
The U.S. Open is often a logistical marvel. The national championship has the largest field in golf playing the “toughest test in golf” and often has to dodge spotty mid-June weather. It can become a nightmare to get 156 players through 36 holes by Friday night. This week at Shinnecock Hills, however, it appears the USGA is in for smooth sailing.
The weather forecast is near perfect for all four tournament days. There’s a slight 10 percent chance of rain but that’s as significant as it gets. With the usual advantage of working with some of the longest days of the year, we should stay on schedule barring no course setup or wind catastrophes.
The field size still requires that they send them off split tees and in groups of three for the first two days. This is not the Masters, where a 10th tee start is anathema and they’d sooner cancel the entire tournament than have the field going off two tees. The 156-man field at the U.S. Open matches the size of the The Open and PGA Championship and at this point, they have figured out how to meet the logistical challenge of such a size playing five-hour rounds. Given the difficulty of this major, and potential for wind, rounds could push six hours but even with such an egregious pace of play, the benign weather forecast should provide some cushion at this 118th edition.
The USGA always gets a little cheeky with their tee times for the first two rounds. They put threesomes together with some obvious and maybe more subtle themes. There are threesomes from the same country, the same alma-mater, winners of the same event, similar-sounding names, and even body types (not great!). There was once a “hefty guys” group at Pinehurst. They put Gregory Havret, Thomas Levet, and Brian Gay together once because all three names rhymed. I believe this year’s attempt at that bit of fun with names is the Brian Stuard, Stewart Hagestad, and Lucas Herbert group.
We also have three former U.S. amateur winners, three Spaniards, three Texas Longhorns, three Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, a “best to never win a major” group, and a Beef & Berger duo, among others. A few other themes:
Some themed @usopengolf groups: US Am champs: Bryson, Kuchar, Fitzpatrick Masters: Reed, ZJ, Charl 3 of 4 ain't bad: Phil, Rory, Spieth Ball go far: Finau, List, Woodland Vamos: Sergio, Rahm, RCB .@GTGolf: Ollie, Castro, Werenski #SEC: Dufner, Snedeker, Thornberry
— Will Gray (@WillGrayGC) June 7, 2018
The point is, the USGA is always trying to get creative with every group, even if it comes back to bite them with some controversy as it did with that “hefty guys” group. if you look hard enough, you can probably find some obvious or tangential link in a majority of the groupings.
Here’s your tee sheet for the first two days at Shinnecock Hills. I’ve bolded some of the marquee groups, including one with a large feline named three-time U.S. Open champion.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. | Johnson takes 4-shot lead into weekend at US Open
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Dustin Johnson handled the worst of the weather and wound up as the sole survivor to par at the U.S. Open, taking a four-shot lead into the weekend at Shinnecock Hills.
Johnson dropped only one shot Friday morning in wind and two hours of light rain that made the course play even longer. He made a 45-foot birdie putt on the par-3 seventh hole for a 3-under 67.
In perfect scoring conditions in the afternoon, no one could catch him.
Ian Poulter was one shot behind until a triple bogey on his second-to-last hole. Charley Hoffman was under par until a bogey on his final hole.
Johnson was at 4-under 136, four shots ahead of Hoffman and Scott Piercy.
The weekend will not include Tiger Woods, who shot 72 to miss the cut for the fifth time in his last eight majors. Jordan Spieth joined him with a bogey-bogey finish to miss the cut by one shot.

ANVIL CHORUS
Yes it’s true. Anvil Chorus is now a 6 piece outfit with the addition of ace keyboardist Gené Fenellie (this is the correct spelling) and the result is a ‘larger sound’—that is, the songs sound fuller and, well, Bigger! Some fans are going “yuk—keyboards in all thier songs”—but those of better intllect can see (hear) what a great asset to the band Geré is. Thaen Rasmussen (this is the correct spelling) is still a rip roaring guitarist, more so now than ever and the rhythm section is still very good so metal maniacs everywhere should be sure to get Anvil Chorus’ debut single ‘Blondes in Black’ & ‘Once Again’ while they’re still available.
