Hey, in your Half-Brothers AU, since Hiccup the Younger speaks Dragonese, would Alpha Dragons like the Red Death and the Bewilderbeasts be able to control him?

I’m imagining Drago Bludvist taking control of Hiccup the Younger and forcing him to fight Hiccup the Elder.

Oh definitely, I think it adds some more drama and ups the stakes! And it adds some complexity to the language itself-- the simple act of knowing the language is more than enough to put you at risk of hypnotism. It means Dragonese is highly empathic, and words have power.

Hiccup the Younger's first encounter with this type of influence was with the Red Death. Minicup had tailed his older brother all the way to the cove attempting to dissuade him from running away, so he was present for the romantic flight. Unfortunately, this means he was also there to meet the Red Death for the first time at the Nest, and her voice in his head scared him half to death.

The Red Death's influence causes fear and paranoia. Younger is attacked by thoughts that he must serve the queen or she will kill him; even when they make it safely back to the cove, he still feels that paranoia. Elder helps to bring him out of it.

The Deathsongs are much more mild in comparison. Like a siren to sailors, the song is less 'mind control' and more of an irresistible beckon. He can technically choose not to follow the song, but it's really hard to do that without a lot of practice.

Which means there's a looot of trial and error.

The Bewilderbeast, though, is Hiccup the Younger's worst encounter thus far.

Younger caught on to the species' power when he met Valka's Bewilderbeast, falling into a mild hypnotism when he first saw it, but he shook himself out of it pretty quickly. Drago's Bewilderbeast had a much stronger pull, visibly making him falter in battle because it was hard to concentrate. Drago saw this.

When Drago stole Toothless after killing Stoick, he took Younger with him. Drago couldn't control Toothless's prosthetic tail fin (that was one of the things that bothered me about the original movie, Drago shouldn't know how to fly Toothless), so he decided to kill two birds with one Bewilderbeast and mind controlled the kid into flying Toothless for him.

So Elder's lost not only his father and his best friend, but also his little brother :(
