haven’t watched netflix atla yet! what do you think the show got right (… if they did at all) and what it got wrong?

What the show got right: I think Aang was perfectly cast!! That child is so happy, cute, and lively that it's amazing. He somehow manages to keep you engaged just with the power of his adorable smile. Zuko's actor has tragic makeup, but his passion makes up for it, he manages to pull off the script very well in my opinion and he sometimes slips into a modern highschooler mannerism set but we can overlook that. There's also this one great joke where Aang and Zuko are fighting in a town market and a random woman throws herself at Zuko screaming "HOW DARE YOU HIT THAT CHILD!!!"

What the show got wrong: The idea that a live action ATLA should exist. It is like a bunch of people sat down in a room and asked themselves: "What if ATLA wasn't as good?" It is completely confused who its target audience is (somehow they dumbed down the cartoon, but also included content that is really really not child appropriate, and you all know I am a big "kids can take a lot" believer), it doesn't understand the characters or why things happened the way they happened, it adds a bunch of dumb unnecessary scenes, the music is bland, the visuals ugly. The wigs and outfits are genuinely tragic, Yue is such a victim of this show's makeup department it isn't even funny. I genuinely recommend not watching this show and just rewatching the cartoon instead, you'll gain nothing from 8 hours of this

Hello eerna! I've never seen Hadestown but would love to - unfortunately i live in central europe and can't afford to go see it irl lol, do you have any recommendation for watching a recording? 👉👈

Hiii! I feel ya, I am from southern Europe and spent 5 years experiencing the show through bootlegs and my American friends. I saw it for the first time as soon as it arrived in London earlier this year because the Ryanair flight was 50 euro.

First off, there are no official video recordings of the show available to the public and we must rely on bootlegs. Second off, Hadestown as a musical exists in several formats - NYTW, Edmonton, London, and Broadway (also performed on West End) and all of them have boots. All of these are super different, and I assume you're looking for the final version, which is Broadway. You'll recognize it by Eurydice wearing black and Orpheus wearing a red neckerchief. Here's where to find the videos.

Hadestown Broadway previews 2019 - My fav recording of the show, so I rec it as the first you'll watch. It's not the same as the official soundtrack or any of the other Broadway recordings. You can see the facial expressions perfectly and it has my fav cut lyrics in it. My first Hadestown boot was a 2018 London one, but I didn't truly fall in love with the show until I saw this.

And finally. If you go on youtube and look for a playlist called "Hadestown full and slime productions" by user Katie Lawrence you'll get a bunch of other bootlegs of Broadway and London, as well as multicam edits.

The closest to my enjoyment of TFotA would the The Daevabad Trilogy by Shannon Chakraborty (adult low fantasy set in late 18th/early 19th century, the djinn are beautiful pointy eared magic weirdos living in the corners of our world, a human-raised girl gets to explore them and get into royal messes, feat. DELICIOUS royal family drama and a writer who is clearly super duper in love with her world and will write more books set in it). As for more general fantasy recs, recently I've enjoyed Emily Wilde series by Heather Fawcett (adult low fantasy set in early 20th century, follows a delightfully focused human scientist researching faeries and her annoying yet lovable coworker), Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater (adult high fantasy set in an alternate regency era timeline, has an interesting lead who got half her soul stolen by a faerie and how she views life and love), and The Burning Kingdoms by Tasha Suri (adult high fantasy, we follow two countries dancing around going to war, excellent royal family drama). one thing i really love about ATLA was how Katara never forgives her mother's killer but rather just gets closure it's not even treated as a bad thing to arrive at the conclusion she did

One of the most iconic eps of the show! I also liked how she used bloodbending and wasn't judged for it or treated like she had to learn a lesson about not using it...

Why did they immediately figure out how the lotus casino was a place they could easily get trapped in? Was that in the books? I remember them figuring it out later and I feel like the show killed a lot of the tension bc it revealed that information too early.

In the books they don't see it as anything supernatural and accidentally get stuck playing video games for several days before they realize something is wrong. Because it's supposed to be. Y'know. Fun for kids. Addictive. Tailored to your dreams so you never wish to leave. I was a bit jealous of them when reading about it until the date reveal dropped. The show said that sounded too fun and decided to just have them standing around frowning like they do in the rest of the show
