Hey guys, నేను ఇప్పుడు Indiaలోని దారాసురామ్ గుడిలో ఉన్నాను ఇక్కడ నేను మీకు చాలా interesting అయిన విషయాన్ని చూపించాలనుకుంటున్నాను. మీరు చూస్తున్నారు కాదా, ఈ గుడిని  చూడటానికి చాల మంది చుట్టూ పక్కల ఉన్న వాళ్లు, ఇంకా foreign touristsలు కూడా వస్తున్నారు, and  వాళ్ల దగ్గర నుండి వచ్చే complaint ఏంటంటే, లోపలికి పోవడానికి గాని బైటికి రావడానికి గాని దారి చూపించే విధంగా ఎలాంటి signs అంటే గుర్తులు లేవని complaint చేస్తున్నారు.

గుడిలో చాలా పెద్ద గదులు, చిన్న గదులు ఉండడం వల్ల ఏ దారిలో వెళ్లాలో, ఎలా వెళ్లాలో తెలియక confuse అవుతున్నారు. Indiaలో ఉన్న గుడులకు entrance గుర్తులు  కానీ exit గుర్తులు  కానీ ఎందుకు లేవు? నిజానికి archeologistsలు and మతపూరితమైన expertsలు ఎం చెప్తారంటే, ఇలాంటి గుర్తులు లేదా signboardsలలో రాసినట్టు పాతకాలపు గుడులలో  ఏమి లేవు and  వాటిని చూడలేదు అని చెప్తున్నారు.

ఇది చాల ఆశ్చర్యంగా ఉంది ఎందుకంటే రెండువేల (2000) సంవత్సరాలుగా indianలు తమిళంలో, సంస్కృతంలో  రాస్తూ ఉన్నారు  and ఈ గుడిలో ఉన్న ఈ  lettersని నేను ఇప్పుడు research  చేస్తున్నాను. కానీ నేను మీకు ఇప్పుడు  మన పాత కాలపు builders చాల శతాబ్దాలకు ముందు ఎంత తెలివిగా ఉన్నారో అని చూపిస్తాను. సరే ok మీరు ఇప్పుడు గుడి లోపల ఉన్నారని అనుకుందాం. And ఈ స్థంభాలని గమనించి చుడండి, అన్ని స్తంభాలపై ఒక జంతువు శిల్పం ఉంది, గమనించండి ఈ జంతువుల తోకలన్ని వంకరగా మెలితిప్పినట్లు అంటే twist అయినట్టుగా ఉన్నాయి.

ఒకటి తప్ప మిగతా అన్నిస్తంభాలు ఇలానే ఉంటుంది, just  ఆ స్థంభం దగ్గరికి వెళ్ళండి అదే మీరు బైటకి వెళ్లే దారి.  ఇదే ఆ కాలంలో ఉన్న ప్రకారం బట్టి బైటికి వెళ్లి గుర్తు, ఇది just coincidenceఎహ్ నా? In fact, ఇది నేను చాల శతాబ్దాల తర్వాత మల్లి కనిపెట్టాను, ఎందుకంటే ఇక్కడ ఉండే archaeologistsలు, గురువులు, జనాలు, ఎవ్వరికి ఈ గుర్తులు గురించి ఒక్క idea కూడా లేదు. కొంచం ఆలోచించండి ఇప్పట్లో ఉన్న historians పాతకాలపు builders అందరూ మనకంటే tallent లేని వాళ్లుగా ఉన్నారని చెప్తున్నారు  కానీ వాళ్లే చాల శతాబ్దాలకు ముందే ఈ గుర్తులను create  చేసారు, ఈ గుడిని కట్టి ఎనిమిదివందల యాభై (850) సంవత్సరాలు అవుతుంది. 

And modern అయిన వాళ్లు , talent అయిన వాళ్లు అని  చెప్పుకుంటున్న  మనము  ఇలాంటి విషయాలను చూడకుండా, గమనించకుండా ఉన్నాము. ఇంకా ఇందులో important  అయిన విషయం ఏంటంటే మీరు బైట నుండి చూస్తే, మీరు బైటికి వెళ్లే దారిని చూడలేరు ఎందుకంటే దాన్ని మీరు చూడాల్సిన అవసరమే  లేదు, ఇది మీరు లోపల ఉన్నపుడు అంటే బైటికి రావాలని అనుకున్నప్పుడే  తెలుస్తుంది. ఈ పాతకాలపు entrance and exit గుర్తులకు ఏ maintenance అవసరం లేదు ఇంకా అవి ఎప్పుడూ నాశనం అవ్వవు కూడా. ఇవన్నీ సాధారణంగా బైట తగిలించే board  కాదు, వీటిని  తియ్యలేము, మార్చలేము, ఎందుకంటే ఇవన్నీ గుడిలో కట్టబడింది, అంటే infrastructure తో చెక్కారు.

What we have worked on today. We have brainstormed some more on what to do for each letter. For the first and second letters we decided to use gears to move them. The first one has the motor and will move the second one along with itself. For the third one we chose to use a cardboard gear mechanism to move it, this letter will be hands on so the visitors will be able to turn a crank and the letter will move. For the fourth we choose a knob that will rotate the whole letter. This one will also be hands on as well so the visitors can interact with it. We are try to make most of them hands on so that the visitors will want to come check it out!

We did a project for Aj where we worked on cutting out cardboard that was a map of the Bay Area for the AR Sandbox exhibit where we can "make it rain". The multiple layers show depth and show how high or low the areas are.

Inventor doesn't read open text fonts, only true type fonts (ttf), so this converted our gotham font, which we used for the TechHive sign, to ttf.

1. I made some sketchup models of the entryway and the wall. We might just cover all of the walls in a cardboard surface. Also, if we cover all of the walls in textured cardboard: (1) We're going to need a lot of cardboard and (2) there's probably going to be a sunken in place for the mechanisms to just fit in/ some other way to mount to the cardboard wall itself. 

The models are in the /Group Projects/Entry Sign folder in the Google Drive. 

2. Worked on what we're going to do at the meeting next Saturday. It's easiest to just make the people cut cardboard for the sign. We're going to make them do the letters since we can't decide on what to do for the wavy wall. 

It took a lot of experimenting to make the letter templates. First we tried using Inkscape to print out the text. The problem with that was figuring out how to tile print the letters, since we needed the letters to be 23.5 inches tall.

Abandoning Inkscape, I turned to Adobe Illustrator. It took a while to learn how to navigate around it, but simple googling made it a lot easier to manage. I followed this guide  and finally got a PDF for printing. 

Part of the reason it took so long was because I couldn't figure out why my path stroke and fill wasn't changing color when I wanted them to. Because I was using a Mac with a Windows keyboard, Cmd on a Mac was Alt. And the shortcuts are different. So Ctrl-Z on Windows is Alt-Z on this computer, and that would undo stuff. I assumed Alt-Y would redo stuff since that's what Ctrl-Y does. Nope. When I did Alt-Y, it hid all the style stuff (color/stroke/fill) and only showed the paths as black lines. Finally when I pressed Alt-Y again, the stroke/fill showed. TL;DR: Alt-Y doesn't redo stuff in Illustrator. Also, Macs stress me out.
