Alberto Burri / Bianco B / 1965
Plastic, acrylic, combustion, and Vinavil on Celotex / 59 1/2 x 59 1/2 inches
“Experimenting with unorthodox pigments and resins, he produced his Catrami (tars) and Muffe (molds), as well as protruding, sculptural canvases that he called Gobbi (hunchbacks). By 1950 he was making assemblages out of burlap bags and household linens—Sacchi (sacks) and Bianchi (whites)—that garnered him international acclaim...He blurred the boundaries between painting and relief sculpture and redefined the concept and the making of the monochrome.”

“Coming into the 15th century, egg as a binding agent for paints was replaced by oils, which completely transformed painting. Their invention is credited to Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, though it’s thought oils were already in use before his time. His real achievement? The painted techniques he developed, which saw him building up oil paint layers from fast-drying to slow-drying and combining opaque with transparent pigments. These innovations enabled painters to create more detailed and realistics works as oil paint could be mixed more easily and applied in big strokes.”

“Archaeologists believe they have discovered the world’s oldest-known representational artwork: three wild pigs painted deep in a limestone cave on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi at least 45,500 years ago.The ancient images, revealed this week in the journal Science Advances, were found in Leang Tedongnge cave. Made with red ochre pigment, the painting appears to depict a group of Sulawesi warty pigs, two of which appear to be fighting. Those two images are badly damaged, but the third, possibly watching the drama unfold, remains in near-pristine condition.”

Rosy russula / Crystalynn Tarr / 2021 (watercolor on paper)
“For years, something was bothering Crystalynn Tarr. As an artist, landscapes were her thing, particularly scenes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. She'd paint alpine meadows and streams in vibrant colour, and to her, these vignettes were reminders of a closely held value: tread lightly on this Earth. But the big irony, the detail that was pricking at her conscience, was the fact of how she produced these paintings. To capture the beauty of nature, Tarr relied on acrylic paints — a completely synthetic medium at odds with her green ideals. "I always felt this really weird disconnect," says Tarr. "And that bugged me, but I really didn't know what to do with it."The solution, it turns out, was right in front of her — and below her, and pretty much everywhere she looks. Nowadays, Tarr only paints with what she finds outdoors. She uses earth pigments exclusively, colour extracted from soil and rocks that she often gathers herself. And from this dusty bounty, she mixes her own watercolour paints.”
