Is Esty a profitable eCommerce platform?
Selling on Etsy
Countless times, I've received frustrated reports from Etsy sellers, both old and new, on how draining it's been to make sales on Etsy. Oftentimes, these cries get so loud, it overshadows the voices of those who claim Etsy has been a literal lifesaver to them. What truth then, is one to take?
Finding the actual truth is challenging, so all I can offer now are the facts.
Etsy wasn't designed to keep stores in a state of perpetual loss. That would only mean putting themselves in bankruptcy! Etsy was designed to connect sellers with prospective buyers and the more this happened, the more the credibility of the platform as a point of exchange/marketplace, rose.
From its inception in 2005 till date, Etsy has seen rapid growth from a marketplace of just 120,000 traders to one that connects 81.9 million buyers to 4.36 million sellers! Its annual revenue is at an all-time $1.72b with no signs of slowing down. It took a lot of trustworthiness and credibility to get to that number, I tell you. But it was also due to the fact that there were fewer competition then.
Now, Etsy is fiercely competitive, and its algorithm has been wired to even cut back on inactive profiles, or those found violating one of their quite many terms of service. All these are just to reduce the level of competition and create a level playing field for all. Yet, it doesn't seem to be enough. A lot of people still find it a herculean task to attract customers to their stores.
In the midst of all these though, there are still those who make a lot of money off Etsy annually. So why not you?
This could be due to a number of reasons. Most people come on Etsy, setup their shop the best way they can, list a few products, and viola! They expect the thousands to begin flowing in. No ma'am, no sir, it doesn't work that way.
A lot of people overlook the significance of SEO in giving their shop much-needed visibility. Keywords pertaining to your brand have to be fully optimized in your complete shop setup. No, your Etsy shop setup doesn't just require your email, password, banner, logo, and shop name. Those are the basics but there's a lot that still needs to be done underneath. Those who are able to optimize their keywords in their shop setup will have a higher visibility than those who weren't.
For each product listing also, relevant keywords are crucial. The title of the product, description, tags, and even the uploaded document have to be fully optimized to drag traffic back to your Etsy store. Don't forget your FAQs too.
Apart from Search Engine Optimization, social media platforms can also be integrated to your store. Your shop link will serve as a backlink, making access to your store relatively easy. Make sure to optimize tags in whatever platform you might be marketing your products on.
Asides Etsy ads, there are also a number of ways to promote your store. Sites that promote backlink traffic can also come in handy despite popular belief if it is used in the right hands. Submission of guest posts to websites is also an available option. I kid you not when I say article and blog post writing can also serve as a promotion strategy.
There are quite too many ways to market your Etsy shop and product. Way too many, it'll be impossible for me to list it all. A candid advice I will leave with you however, is that you procure the help of a professional to serve as a consultant, or help with with your store's management if it gets all too much/complicated for you to handle alone.
On a final note, remember that no matter how incredible your product might be, if it isn't given an aesthetic feel, it will be stuck on the self for a very long time. So, also pay particular attention to your shop and also your product's outlook.

I wish you the very best!
