What is fantasy football?

I thought this simple explanation might be good for beginners:

Fantasy football is a game that allows players to create and manage their own virtual teams using real NFL players. These virtual teams compete against each other based on the statistical performance of the players on their rosters in actual NFL games.

To start a fantasy football league, a group of people come together and decide on the rules and format of the league. This may include things like the scoring system, the size of the rosters, and the number of teams in the league.

Once the league is set up, a draft is held to allow each team to select players for their roster. In a draft, teams take turns selecting players from a pool of eligible players. The order in which teams make their picks is usually determined by a random draw or by the team's record from the previous season. There are various types of drafts, including traditional drafts, auction drafts, and serpentine drafts.

In a traditional draft, teams take turns selecting players in a predetermined order. In an auction draft, teams have a budget to bid on players in an auction format. In a serpentine draft, the order in which teams make their picks "snakes" back and forth, with the team that picks first in the odd rounds picking last in the even rounds, and so on.

Fantasy football rosters are made up of different positions, including quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers, and team defenses. Each position has its own specific role on a team and scores points in different ways. For example, quarterbacks may score points for passing touchdowns and yardage, while kickers may score points for field goals and extra points.

Fantasy football has a long history dating back to the 1960s. It was popularized in the 1990s with the rise of the internet, which made it easier for people to create and manage their own leagues online. Today, fantasy football is played by millions of people around the world and has become a major part of the NFL fan experience.
