65% of my work atm is essentially taking historical maps/first-hand accounts and plotting them to modern day satellite, google earth imagery, and boy ! mapping in the 19th century, huh

#currently at this exact moment working on one for the archaeological remains at Beechey island (from the Franklin expedition's first winter #camp) #so I'm mainly relying on the accounts and haphazard maps from the 1850s/60s rescue missions #and they are... vague<3 #the written accounts are quite good- but they're using language that truly is only helpful if you are on the ground at Beechey island #and the map? THE MAP? oh boy #god love them- they had like a few days at the end of August to chart and scour (they were also primarily focused on finding written #proof of where Franklin and the boys went from Beechey island come spring) #plus 1851... mapping is not so easy as it is today #but good lord they're shit #also impeding is the nature of the arctic- how many times has ice been mistaken for land masses you know #^ a lot #it is fun though I'm quite autistic about maps and organizing #i've been in this course and working w/ this professor for 6 weeks and i'm already a walking franklin encyclopedia #i have so many fun facts!! so many! #on the franklin expedition

Finished my Fray cosplay and I'm super happy with how it turned out! Easily the most complicated cosplay I've made yet. Started working in April, so that's about 3-4 months of work off and on.

Natquik:

the Antarctica Incident had a much greater toll on him than he realizes. he's just ✨ Fine™ ✨ y'know? nbd <3 (he's not fine somebody please hug him-)

has a Thing about things breaking/not working. it causes him to immediately panic and have a million thoughts rush through his head about how he'll survive the weather, how much food he has, etc., even if it's something small.

he also doesn't like being alone for too long. you'd think he'd be "used to it", but nope.

but on the bright side: contrary to popular belief, he wasn't completely alone while trapped. he befriended a lot of penguins. mostly against his will, but still.

1000000000% views Barnacles as his son but he'll never admit it.

so gosh darn fluffy. basically canon but yeah. aside from the adorableness it's kinda a burden because he'd probably overheat really fast if he left his station.

fluent in Russian, and used to have a habit of muttering Impolite Words™ under his breath—until reuniting with a grown-up Barnacles who picked up some Russian in his worldly travels. now he only does it in private.

he watched the great penguin race. he saw and/or heard Barnacles there, but wasn't sure if it was him. they left before he worked up the courage had a chance to talk to them.

Calico Jack:

mmmmmmmmmm. undiagnosed autistic. masks really well but only among other pirates, who have completely different social rules and whatnot. he's struggling now because he doesn't know how to mask anymore. he doesn't need to, because literally all the Octonauts are neurodivergent, but pshh

he's going through a redemption arc in his head. no one else knows about it because everyone likes him already and thinks he's great, but he can't see that.

his leg will start to hurt really bad if he runs on it too much—he tries to avoid it if he can, but sometimes he's stubborn, or just forgets (until it's too late).

three words: phantom limb syndrome.

has anxiety and gets nightmares. he's good at hiding it, but sometimes a really bad one will bother him for a day or two.

his eyepatch used to be covering the opposite eye—that's why Kwazii's is on that side, and why his statue (slime eels) and mini carving (pirate parrotfish) both have it on the wrong way. he switched it over when he left to hide live in the Amazon.

Marsh:

genuinely forgets that he's green sometimes. someone will comment on it and he'll be like "????? oh right–"

highkey a dad to 90% of the Everglades creatures. every single one of them is like family to him.

he grew up side-by-side with a lot of the older swamp critters (Belle The Turtle, & maybe Flo The Flamingo), he considers them like his siblings.

his first name is literally "Ranger": he had it legally changed, so that he and Tweak (who decided to go by "Tweak" when she got into engineering) could both be named after their interests.

unintentionally inspired Tweak's engineering special interest. that motorboat he has in The Alligator-Shark? it used to break down constantly, until he taught her how to fix it. she fixed it ONCE and it never broke down again. it gave her such a rush of euphoria that she went around fixing everything, and eventually building new things. and she just,, never stopped.

I'm reading and listening to The Underworld: Journeys to the Depths of the Ocean by Susan Casey and I keep basically coming up for air (i.e. scrolling the dash for a few minutes) after about each chapter so I can process and vibrate with excitement etc.

The abyss fascinates me and terrifies me and I've been anxiously awaiting my turn to read this for months (I placed holds last year shortly after the book was released).

This is going to lead me down more rabbit holes, probably alternating between geology, biology, oceanography, plate tectonics, and volcanology (all of which are things I've previously spent a lot of time learning about, but my interest has been rekindled recently, hence reading The Underworld).

Gotta say, though, there have been some... awkward... moments. This book came out less than 6 weeks after the oceangate incident, and there are so many lines that have made me wince (like how there hadn't been a manned-submersible death since the 1970s...)

#the arctic and space and the deep sea my beloveds #literally feel like I'm vibrating when i think about them #and i have to restrain myself each time i dip into reading etc about them because i will get obsessive again and it will take over my life #reading this unlocked the memory of how young-me truly wanted to be a volcanologist... until i saw Volcano & was traumatized lmao #all my science dreams were crushed by family telling me it was for boys or i wasn't observant enough or i was too airheaded etc #(i was a straight A student in the gifted program but undiagnosed adhd) #anyway. now i feel almost like I'm not allowed to engage with anything like this because I'm too stupid and what's the point in learning #but it's something i genuinely love so I'm trying to ease back into learning for fun #even though i know I'll never be able to use any of this (except maybe in stories idk) #that got out of hand but whatever i needed to vent i guess #now I'm going back to reading about the tonga trench 🍿
