while i’m at it, here’s the other costume i did this semester. i have a couple more within this project but its all styling so that’s a little boring to show if i can’t post my performers’ faces (esp bc its pretty makeup and hair based) but this costume like . basically the pants and shoes i found second hand and both got a layer of gesso and then alcohol marker on top, the shirt is the same method except this is a fairly low thread count cotton so it got really stiff (so did the trousers i just couldnt tell u what fabric those are beyond like generalisations. possibly linen.)
the shirt is actually closed by a zip on top of which i added in this fake button placket (if anyone mentions the fact that i put the placket on the feminine side i’ll scream. im aware.) but where the robe covers the shirt i forwent the gesso treatment <- during the performance the actor’s physicality and physical body within a space is really important so at a certain point this hypertangibility of costuming is taken off during a pretty physical dance scene and the back of his shirt is translucent with sweat which is just a great effect.
the robe then is this thick polyester situation, tight weave which means the gesso sat more on top of the fabric and while it was still very heavy and stiff it had a bit of a different moveability to it than the cotton. again, covered up that whole thing with alcohol marker (took like ... 4 markers? i think?) to give that hand-drawn feel. really really thrilled about how this turned out, especially considering how it fits within the play’s design
