5 Things Churches Can Do to Be More Welcoming for Young People
5 Things Churches Can Do to Be More Welcoming for Young People https://ift.tt/vWtFzOn Attracting and retaining young people in churches is essential for the vitality and growth of congregations. To create a welcoming environment for young adults, churches must adapt and address their unique needs and preferences.   Contemporary Worship Styles Young people often gravitate toward contemporary worship styles, including modern music, vibrant worship bands, and interactive elements. Incorporating contemporary worship into church services can make the experience more relatable and engaging for young adults. However, it’s essential to strike a balance that respects the preferences of older members.   Relevant and Relatable Teaching Tailoring sermons and teaching materials to address the challenges and questions young adults face in today’s world is essential. Practical guidance on relationships, careers, and spirituality can resonate with this demographic and demonstrate the church’s relevance.   Small Groups and Community Young adults often seek genuine connections and a sense of belonging. Establishing small groups or young adult ministries within the church allows young people to build relationships, discuss faith-related topics, and support one another. Encourage mentorship and peer-to-peer relationships to foster a sense of community.   Inclusivity and Acceptance Creating an inclusive and accepting atmosphere is crucial for attracting young people. Churches should welcome individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or social status. Embracing diversity and demonstrating unconditional love aligns with the teachings of Jesus and appeals to younger generations.   Service and Outreach Opportunities Many young adults are passionate about positively impacting their communities and beyond. Churches can provide opportunities for service and outreach projects that align with young people’s desire to contribute to social justice causes. Engaging in volunteer work and missions can help young adults connect their faith to real-world action.   Additionally, churches can consider the following characteristics highlighted in the Grace Plano article to attract young adults: Authenticity: Young adults value authenticity and seek genuine relationships within the church community. Encourage open and honest communication. Relevant Programs: Develop programs and events that address young adults’ specific needs and interests, such as career development workshops or social gatherings. Empowerment: Give young adults opportunities to lead and take ownership of initiatives within the church. Empower them to use their talents for the greater good. Approachability: Create approachable leaders and volunteers who are accessible to young adults and willing to listen to their concerns and ideas. Digital Engagement: Utilize technology and social media to connect with young people and keep them informed about church activities and opportunities for involvement. Jeremiah 6:16-8:7, Colossians 2:8-23, Psalms 78:1-31, Proverbs 24:26
Today is the 6th day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is a pleasure. It is awesome to be here with you as we walk through the threshold of a brand-new week together. And this will be our first full week of this month of October and I'm excited to see what's in store for us as we continue our journey through the Scriptures this year. This week we'll read from the New International Version and pick up right where we left off, which will take us into the book of Jeremiah today, chapter 6 verse 16 through 8 verse 7.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for that proverb because…because that's what it feels like You give us every day that we engage in this rhythm of allowing Your word to speak into our lives, it feels like an honest answer and some days it's the only honest answer we get. And, so, we thank You for Your kindness. We thank You for the voice of wisdom in our lives, we thank You for Your patience and Your grace and mercy over us. And, so, Father as we move into this new week, we look for the honest answers that we find in Your word and we ask Your Holy Spirit to help us recognize the truth. In fact, we surrender and follow You as You would lead us into all truth, which is the promise. And, so, we accept. Come Holy Spirit, lead us in all of our thoughts, words, and deeds in this week we pray. In Jesus’ name we ask. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Good morning Daily audio Bible listeners this is Gina from Orlando again. This morning I would like to pray for all who were struggling with hurt - emotional, physical, mental or even spiritual. Father God, please comfort us Your children, please fill our heart because You are the only one that can do a complete healing. Father God You know everything about us, please hear and answer because sometimes the pain is so unbearable, we can’t put it into words. Lord, I pray that You would deliver us from any bitterness, envy, unknown pride and anything else that would estrange us from Your presence. With that said Father God, please give us an added sense of Your presence during our trials and trying times. Lord God if any pain we are experiencing is because of unforgiveness or unconfessed sin God please forgive us and please reveal so that we can repent. Lord God, I pray that You would create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us today. Lord please also give us a heart of flesh that is soft toward You and desires to do Your will. Lord today I also pray that everyone listening would be filled with Your overwhelming joy and peace that Your goodness and mercy will be with us continually also. Lord for myself I ask for direction with finances and the ability to hear You clearly. Father please bless and protect Brian and Jill, all those that pray without ceasing, and those in the DAB community. Thank You Lord for an opportunity and a privilege to pray. In Jesus’ name I ask all these things. Amen. Be blessed Daily Audio Bible, be blessed.
Hello, my name is Susan I’m calling from Plano Illinois. This is my first time calling. I have been a listener for over 11 years and this call mainly is just to introduce myself. I keep hesitating to call. I don’t know why but Brian’s new little button has made a change for that. So, it’s so much easier to call and I can’t let the enemy change my mind. Normally I listen to the Daily Audio Bible while I’m driving to work. So, I can’ always write down the prayer requests but I pray for those as I’m listening to them and there are special ones that stick out in my mind especially those suffering from anxiety, children, or family members or friends who have committed suicide. I just pray for all of you guys. I love you. I recognize voices right off the bat, a lot of the you. First of all I want to thank Brian and Jill and his family and all those behind the scenes who make this possible because it has meant so much to all of us. And I just want to say hi and thank you to all the prayer warriors that call in on a regular basis - Annette from Oklahoma City, Blind Tony I love your poems, Victoria Soldier, Slave of Jesus, Pastor Gene I haven’t heard from you for a while, Lee from New Jersey, Jay from Nashville, Candace from Oregon, Diane Olive Brown, His Little Cherry, Alfaro from Delaware, Tony the Painter I haven’t heard from you for a while or Mark Straight haven’t heard from you for a while, Walta the Burning Bush, Angel from California, Rebecca from Michigan, Biola. I love you guys. I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I’ve ordered my God of Your Story. Thank you, Brian. You are amazing. God bless all of you and I love you.
Hey guys. How you doing? This is John the Prodigal. I’m calling. I need your help. I need your prayers. Just got terribly depressing call from my son. He’s ready to give up. He thinks he fails at everything. He’s at the end of his rope. He passed out last week at work, went to the hospital, he’s been at the hospital. He just seems to fail at everything he does, and he beats the crap out of himself. He’s a lot like his dad. And I just wish and ask him that you pray for him. He’s beaten drugs, he’s turned his life around, but he just needs a little help from God. So, just going to ask you to pray for him please. Please pray. I’m praying as hard as I can. I’m doing everything I can and I’m…I’m not doing too good as you all know but please pray for my son Jake. Love you all. God bless you all. You make it a great day. I’m out.
Good morning family this is Mikayla from Gloucester in the UK it is Thursday the 3rd of October and it has long been on my heart to pray for our leaders in our countries and I was reminded of this a couple weeks ago when our speaker at church spoke on the start of one Timothy two. First of all then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior who desires all people to be saved and to the come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and there is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus who gave Himself as a ransom for all which is a testimony given at the proper time. Father God, thank you so much for our leaders and those who are in positions of power and authority and influence. Lord I pray especially for the following people and those who represent: Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Justin Trudue, Sevaale Ramaphoso, Scott Morrison, Angela Merkel, Stefan Lufan, Jusenda Aarden, Shizoo Abby, Paul Bia, Mohammed Bihari, Burness Oberg, Immanuel Metatron, Vladimir Putin Andrea’s Manwell Lupus Obradoor, Hun Sun, Lee Ji Ping, Gamneth Kuvend, Moon Jain, and Kim Jaun. Lord, there are so many I haven’t mentioned and we lift them up to you as well and I just pray that…that you would be guiding…
Hello family this is Kenny in Ohio. I was just listening to the September 27th podcast and in the Ephesians 5 where it talks about husbands to love their wives and in comparison to Jesus and His sacrifice for the church and I was just, I’ve read that multiple, you know, 10s to 20s of times but when Brian was reading it from the Voice Translation it just hit home that…that I am, you know, not loving my wife as that and I just need the Holy Spirit to transform me into having that sacrificial love. I just pray over all the husbands and wives as we just read Ephesians and just thank you. Love you all. Bye.
Hi DAB family this is Kimberly from Maryland and I’m asking for a covenant of prayer to go over my friend Donna and Reggie and Marcus. And Marcus has conflicting diseases and needs a kidney and just really really praying at this juncture for a miracle. And if you all could all lift him up in prayer and Marcus I really really appreciate it. Love you all. Talk to you later.

100 Important Character Questions
Going to be a long one, so under a cut.
Tumblr media
“Oh, so I’m the one being interrogated this time.”
PART 1: THE BASICS
Who are/were your parents?
“Frank Sawyer is my dad.  He’s a businessman, working for a tech company in Plano, TX, where I grew up from about 6 years old until I moved out.  We had a lot of money, but he didn’t grow up that way, so he has a different attitude than someone who was born into it.  Like me, I guess, although we only really reached that after I was a few years old.  He’s typically a nice, friendly guy who gets along with most people, and wanted his kids to do that.  He tried to make sure I knew that I grew up with some blessings many people don’t have.”
“Mom is Miranda.  Lucas was her maiden name.  I’ve been told we look a lot alike.  She’s a recently retired high school counselor.  She was more in charge of the day-to-day life in my family, had a bit of the ‘family matriarch’ in her.  Old-fashioned in a lot of ways, she tried to make sure I had some...ladylike qualities.  I know she worries to death how I’m going to get myself killed or abducted by some criminal.”
What do you have in your pockets?
“Um...let’s see.  My pockets have...my cell phone, keys, a $20 bill I try to carry around for emergencies.  Keychain has keys, obviously.  Also a multitool thing, a small flashlight, and it’s attached to a Texas A&M lanyard I got from my brother.  I have my Glock on my hip and my handcuffs on me, if those count.”
PART 2: GROWING UP
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
“What didn’t I want to be?  Nancy Drew, Wonder Woman, a Cowboys cheerleader, a teacher, a vet, a model.  I guess Nancy Drew is the closest to what I actually grew up to be.”
When and with whom was your first kiss?
“Jacob Foster.  I was 14, he was 15, a football player, defensive back, I think.  I played volleyball and we saw each other after practices sometimes and we went on a date and he kissed me at the end.  It was so messy, looking back on it now, but I thought I was head over heels in love.  This isn’t counting the time Bobby down the street forced a kiss on me when I was 8 and I kicked him.”
PART 3: PAST INFLUENCES
What is the most embarrassing thing ever to happen to you?
“I was going for a run in college and this cute boy looked at me.  I smiled at him, trying to get his attention--and I wasn’t watching where I was going, and tripped over a curb.  It was not one of my more graceful moments.  At least I wasn’t hurt.”
What is your worst memory?
“I could say when my grandfather died, but we knew for some time he was going to die.  It has to be when my dad woke me up in high school to tell me one of my friends from school had been killed in a car wreck.  That was...unexpected.  And painful.”
PART 4: BELIEFS & OPINIONS
What are your religious views?
“I was raised Southern Baptist.  I’m still a believer, a Christian, and I guess I’d qualify as Evangelical, but I don’t know if I’d describe myself as a Baptist.  Protestant.  I go to a non-denominational church.  Sometimes.  More often than not.  I do pray frequently.”
In your opinion, what is the most evil thing any human being could do?
“I’ve seen some evil things done in the few years I’ve been working this job.  I don’t know what the most evil thing someone could do is.  But I can say one thing that has to be up there is locking someone up, purposely tormenting them, keeping them around and doing so just for your pleasure.”
PART 5: RELATIONSHIPS W/OTHERS
Do you have a spouse or significant other? If so, describe this person.
“Bryan Garrett.  We got married last year.  He was in the army, now he works for a security consulting company in northern Virginia.  He’s tall, has nice shoulders and abs.  He’s a good man.  He lets me vent and gives me shoulder rubs after hard days.”
Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why?
“My husband, my brother.  But the main one is my FBI partner.  I trust him to have my back.  I’ve seen him go through training scenarios.  He knows how to handle himself.”
PART 6: LIKES & DISLIKES
How do you spend a typical Saturday night?
“Assuming I’m at home and not on a case somewhere, it’ll either be our weekly night in, or if we did that Friday instead, out with friends.  Go out to eat, maybe go to a movie, or hang out with friends.  Don’t go to bars as much anymore.
How do you deal with stress?
“Hit a punching bag, go for a run, a session on the firing range.  Or if it has me feeling down, a long, warm bath, and some cat videos on Youtube.  Wine possible, chocolate definitely.”
PART 7: SELF IMAGES & OTHER
Are you generally organized or messy?
“I think I’m organized.  My parents said I was messy.  My husband already says he’s tired of tripping over my bras.  My bedroom usually looked like a disaster hit it.  I try to keep anything to do with work organized.  I have to.  If it’s not something I really need to keep organized, and if other people aren’t likely to see it, I’m not bothering to keep it very clean.”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“Still at the FBI, maybe with a kid or two.  Possibly with a job that doesn’t require quite as much travel by that point.  I got hostage negotiation training recently.  Maybe I’ll do that full-time.”

Deus vos abençoe e see ya in the pit!
***
Beloved friends and brothers,
It is the first time we write this kind of message. We are about to enter a new period in our lives and we would like to let you know about it and allow you to be a part of it if you wish to. Two weeks ago, at our own Igreja da Lapa, the presbyterate presented the following statement during Sunday service:
“For the past two years we have been walking beside pastor Tiago in a new and challenging way, which has brought us closer together and closer to God. Two years ago, Tiago started to feel more and more anxiety, due primarily to the high level of stress brought by the pastoral ministry he has been leading for several years. Tiago and Rute have founded a church 12 years ago and for the past decade have dedicated their lives to being servants of the word of God. It is impossible to have an exact notion of the hours they have invested as a family in our church, be it in the form of counseling, planning, meetings, service or sacrificial love. They have been faithful servants, but lately we have watched their anxiety and stress climb to a level that is bordering on unhealthy. This is sometimes called pastoral burnout or stress- induced anxiety.
Tiago and Rute have been working closely with the church preachers and never shied away from seeking the medical help they needed. They have followed our recommendations and the doctors’ orders regarding rest and the creation of new patterns in the ministry, in order to achieve a healthy balance in the future. However, regardless of this external support, we believe that Tiago and Ana Rute are in desperate need of a six-month sabbatical away from the constant demand of ministry, for an extended period of separation that will better prepare them for future service.”
This was very well received by the Church, which will ensure our income for the July-December sabbatical (allowing us to cover our expenses in Portugal, such as rent). To make the most of this opportunity, we have considered travelling to the USA, where we can visit relatives, be encouraged by partners in ministry, and receive special care for our physical and spiritual renewal.
For that to happen, we will need additional financial resources for our family’s journey, to deal with paperwork such as passports, health insurance, and accommodation, and to allow for the American economy, which falls heavier on Portuguese shoulders. These expenses are beyond our reach, hence this message.
The Church, body of Christ, has supported us in the Igreja da Lapa, and we are now extending this challenge to our beloved brothers in Christ in Portugal and throughout the world. We know the Lord watches over us in your faithful company. We thank you for your generous friendship and, if God so touches your heart that you keep blessing us, we will follow-up with news and reports of accountability. In the meantime, while we are away our home will be available should anyone need it.

Love,
Tiago and Rute (and Maria, Marta, Joaquim and Caleb)
Tiago e Rute (e Maria, Marta, Joaquim e Caleb)

Beloved brothers and sisters,
God willing, the Cavacos will be boarding a plane on a Wednesday morning, July 24th, on our way to the United States. We plan to stop for five days in New York City and then move on to Jackson, Mississippi, where we will rest for a little over four months in communion with our family (Tiago Oliveira – Ana Rute’s brother -  his wife Marta and their sons Rúben, David and little Tiago) and the Grace Baptist Church. Our sabbatical is officially on as of yesterday and will last until the first half of January 2020.
Under God’s care, as shown through the generosity with which you have regarded the appeal in our last letter, we are close to gathering all the resources necessary for this adventure. We have been enormously blessed by your response and encouragement. We feel the experiences you have shared with us have helped open a path and shown us clearly the way to go - so, in a way, you will be travelling along with us.
It is our plan to share our news throughout the sabbatical. We are certain that the joy we have with Jesus – our greatest and best place of rest – will be an ever-increasing message that we will want to testify to and share with you. Through the love of God our Father and the help of the Holy Spirit we are always with you.
Our most thankful and heartfelt love,
Tiago and Ana Rute
Tiago e Ana Rute.

We are now a little over halfway through our time in America, and God continues to bless our family. The first month and a half was dedicated to actual rest; the wonderful Divine Providence allowed for Mr. Lars Johnson and his wife Bernice to seek information on Lisbon, which they wished to visit toward the end of August, only two weeks before we came here. They met Rute’s brother Tiago over the Internet, and then very generously offered us their Lake Cavalier house in Madison, Jackson, as we were about to arrive in the United States. The Johnsons stayed in our Oeiras home while visiting Lisbon, and we stayed in their own home; God has a sense of humor and proportion.
It was a time for reading (Dickens, Bonhoeffer, Salinger and Marvel are a few examples of our family’s favorites), playing (ball games and an old but still perfectly functional Nintendo), drawing, music (so much gospel on the radio!), and movies to our heart’s content, swimming in the river and some road trips (to the birthplace of rock’n’roll in Memphis and a Baptist conference in Palm Beach, which Tiago attended with his brother in law Tiago and Diego Lopes). Everything about that place was special, not least of which our new companions: two very elegant herons, several ducks, annoying horseflies, threatening wasps, some scared deer, and armadillo and raccoon roadkill. Nature here is exuberant, hot and humid, and we now know that in Portugal even the Summer heat is gentle.
In mid-September, God’s unfailing care brought us to the cabin in the woods we call home for now. We are less than five minutes away from our family (Tiago, Marta, Rúben, David and little Tiago) in Pelahatchie (a lot of Native American names around here). After some days of cleaning, and thanks to Rute’s vision for the future, the cabin is now Pinterest-worthy. We like to lovingly call it our redneck piece of paradise.
Moving to Pelahatchie brought us a new daily routine: we have started the school year with Maria, Marta, Joaquim and Caleb, and our days are now filled with school as well as rest.
One of the things we have learned is that there is a lot to be said about the need for real, actual rest. In the Bible, resting is often harder than working, in that we stop in order to let God do His work in us. The pause feels good, but it encompasses a spiritual requirement to put our faith in God’s hands and let it renew our perspective. The places around us look different, the people around us seem different, we ourselves are different. The only constant is the steady presence of Jesus, which makes itself especially visible in an extended reading of Scripture (we have both been studying the book of Job), in the presence of the local church (we feel like we are a part of Grace Baptist Church in Jackson), and in the care of our family, the Oliveiras, among other very welcome mercies.
We never forget that our presence here and now is due to the work of God through every one of you in different ways. Every day we give thanks for the fact that we lack for nothing, in the knowledge that your prayers sustain us. We ask that you go on praying for us, and we trust that we will come back with renewed strength to better serve our country that we so love.
We will see you soon!
Love, Tiago and Rute
Tiago e Rute

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” Psalm 126:3
We arrived in Portugal at the beginning of December. We had an extra month to rest after the six-month sabbatical; we were back at Igreja da Lapa - which we had missed so much! - but we did not work for that time period. It was very good to embrace our loved ones again and see how the Lord took care of the community during our absence; not only did it not stagnate, it actually grew larger!
We had never been out of the country for such a long period, so coming back was a whole new experience. On the one hand we were so very homesick, but on the other we were terribly surprised at how the simplest things get to be so complicated in Portugal. It is certainly annoying when outsiders point out the shortcomings of our homeland, but we must concede that the notorious Portuguese fatalism is much greater than we care to admit. It is therefore our job as Christians to live a more hopeful life in our own land.
In early January, after the usual Christmas overindulgence, we settled back into a routine. Rute has been supervising our children's school matters, amid music, basketball and books. We feel encouraged to maintain a healthier pace and believe less and less that it is possible to do everything all the time. When all is said and done, we left Mississippi but hope we have brought a bit of Mississippi back with us. We think back on our American time, from the care bestowed upon us by the Oliveiras and Grace Baptist Church to counseling and our adventures in the Southern outdoors, and find it hard to believe that unique time of our lives actually did happen: God took care of us, in part through your generosity.
I, Tiago, have been back to the pulpit at Lapa for the past three Sundays. Although it is my goal to preach shorter sermons, I haven't been able to contain my joy. We have started to study Acts and studying this book makes us long to be on the go, to see Christ reach even more people in Lapa, in Lisbon and in Portugal. We don't want to be too annoying in selling the benefits of the sabbatical, but it was truly an enormous blessing. If God planned resting so we can say even more emphatically that what He does is good, mission accomplished: God has done very good things with us, and we suspect there is still more to be done in this place where He placed us.
God bless you,
Tiago and Ana Rute (and Maria, Marta, Joaquim and Caleb)

Grace Assembly of God Church in Singapore, SG
Architect: LAUD Architects
Interior Designer: Architology
Photographer: Edward Hendricks
