"So what are these pills called again"? Antonio asked about this new drug on the street. It already had forty overdoses under its belt and growing.

"Pez". You replied, handing him a sample of the product that you got off a dead guy.

"Like the pez candy"?

"Yeah, it even comes with it's own pez dispenser and everything. Makes it popular with the kids". You tell him as you went to put the last two overdoses on the board. They were thirteen and sixteen that had a bright future before them.

"That's Eva's and Diegos age". Antonio sighed.

"From what we know, the dealer is a strip club owner named Marco Stewart. He has connections to strip clubs, porn studios and apparently schools as well. He has a record longer than my arm. Mostly drug charges and a few DUI's, assault with a deadly weapon and a breaking and entering". You tell Antonio and the others as they started to come in.

"A model citizen". Jay chuckled.

"Yeah, his club has been shut down for redecorating and looking for new talent. So if it's alright with Voight. I was thinking I could go apply and someone else". You looked at Voight who was noddling his in approval.

"I'll go. I can go be a bartender or something". Antonio volunteered.

"They're looking for dancers and a bouncer". You tell Antonio. He lifted a eyebrow.

"Alright set it up. You sure you're cool with this, Y/N"? Voight asked.

"Yeah. I want this guy off the streets. Parents will sleep better at night". You smiled and went to get your coat.

"A stripper? Of all undercover missions I have to miss is, Y/N being a stripper. That hurts". Adam held his chest dramatically.

"Yeah back in Brooklyn. I dealed for nine years and nothing but they catch me picking up a ounce of weed for my moms and I'm in prison before I can bat my eyes. It was bullshit". Antonio put on a thick Brooklyn accent.

"Alright. You're hired too. Both you be here Friday night, six o'clock. I got something for you two do before you go on".

"Wow, thanks. I cant wait to show you my moves. I promise it'll be amazing". You gushed, hugging Antonio and planting a kiss to his cheek. "We got the job, baby".

"Let's go home and celebrate". Antonio growled and picked you up carrying you out of the club.

Antonio put you down and headed to the car. "That was easy".

"Yeah. Now we have to figure out what he wants us to do". You say as you and Antonio drove to the station.

"Heaven? You chose Heaven as a stage name"? Adam scoffed.

"Yes, yes, you are". Adam smiled like a fool. Antonio rolled his eyes.

"Alright. Make sure you two are ready and prepared for this. I dont want it going bad and someone getting hurt. No dealer will go down nicely". Voight reassured.

"Yes, sir". You say. Antonio and you had a rough night sleeping. Your minds raced. Tomorrow was a big job, a lot was depending on you two. You couldn't screw it up.

"My little piece of Heaven". Marco greeted you as you came into the club his arms open for a hug.

"Good even, sir". You purred in his ear.

"Oh, sir. I like that". Marco laughed. "Come on, I got something for you guys". He waved you and Antonio into the back room.

"So tonight is going to be big. Huge! We have Heaven here making her debut and everyones coming. Everyone. So I need you two to be selling some of our delicious product. It taste just like candy". Marco chuckled as he opened a box that had about five hundred pills inside. Enough to kill a whole school of kids.

"I've heard about this drug. It's supposed to make sex even more amazing". You wrapped your arms around Antonio's waist and started kissing his neck. Antonio went along and grabbed your face deepening the kiss to your lips.

"Fuck yes"! Marco cheered.

Antonio pulled away panting, you licked your lips. This was the first time you two let your sexual tension free on each other. It was there but you two kept it bottled up.

"I like you two. This is going to be a great partnership". Marco grinned.

Around seven, people started arriving. Each person got a pez and a pat down from Johnny the bouncer. Antonio was taking his job seriously. You were going around getting drinks for the customers until you were called to the stage.

"Baby, why dont you take this fifty and we go back to the back and play"? A creepy older guy slapped your ass as you sat his drink down on the table.

"No thanks". You smiled and went on your way. You had to breath cause if you didnt you would have taken the drink tray and popped him up side the head with it.

"Heaven, baby. It's almost time". Marco pointed to his wrist and you nodded. You went back to the dressing room and changed into a diamond bralette that didnt hide anything and a pair of black cut up booty shorts. It wasnt your taste but Marco wanted you to wear it. You splashed on some glitter and perfume before you heard your song come on.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new comer here that has blessed us with her beauty. Please give it up for a little piece of Heaven". Marco introduced you to the cheering crowd. You walked on stage and put your hand on his shoulder.

"We also have a special guest to share the stage with her, our own bouncer Johnny Boy". Marco put the spot light on Antonio which caught both you and him off guard. You didnt know his was in your performance.

Marco waved Johnny on stage, Antonio gulped and went up. Marco had a chair for Antonio to sit in as you danced.

"Show em what you got baby doll". Marco slapped your ass.

You smiled at Antonio, he looked nervous. The combination of spot light, the men sitting around watching and the part where he liked you this was a bit to much for him to stand.

The music was flowing through your veins. You swayed your hips to the music in between Antonio's legs. Your hands on his knees, your ass on his lap. Antonio licked his lips, he got the courage to put his hands on your hips and guide you along.

You smirked, rolling your hips. This was all work but you could throw in some play as well. The crowd of cheering men disappeared when you turned around and straddled Antonio's lap. "Now". You said and Voight and the team busted in. You got off of Antonio and went after Marco, Antonio followed your lead.

Marco didnt run, he had his hands up and ready for cuffs.

"For a dealer, you went easily". You told Marco as you handed him off to Jay.

"I'm just the bottom of the food chain, baby. I'll get a slap on the wrist". Marco laughed as he was taken away.

"Great job, you two". Voight nodded and walked away.

"You look absolutely beautiful". Adam smiled like a bigger fool as he came over. You looked down and covered yourself up.

"I'm going to go change". You hurried to the back.

Antonio slapped Adam on the back of his head. "Watch it". He pointed at Adam. Adam stood there confused.

You got dressed quickly and headed out front. Suddenly all eyes were on you.

"What"? You looked down at your outfit. You had tight red pants on with a red jacket and a black see through corset. You may have taken it from Marcos wardrobe.

"You look good, Y/L/N". Jay chuckled along with Adam and Kevin.

"Thank you". You giggled.

Antonio came by your side. "You do. You look really good. Um, you wanna get coffee"? Antonio rubbed the back of his neck.

"Are you asking me on a date"?

"A coffee date".

"Oh". You were kinda sad that that was it.

"Just for now. I'm kinda tired so coffee will hold you over until Friday night". Antonio sent you a wink.

"Yeah. I'd like that".

"Great". Antonio held out his arm for you and you wrapped yours around his. "Where did you learn to dance like that"?

You laughed. "Believe it or not there was a time I wasnt a detective. But that's for another time".

AnnMarie, how important is trust in a tribal council this big? Do you trust anyone who comes to you, or are you skeptical of everyone?

I'm open to all discussions with everybody in a tribal so large. Trust is important, but easy to maintain. To me, you are innocent until proven guilty, and unless you have lied to me, I'm open to any idea you may have. No plan is good or bad, and nobody is truly good and evil in a game like this.

Blake, you had the worst score in the challenge. Do you think this will ultimately put a target on your back? Do you think the strategy is past ‘keep the tribe strong’?

Ultimately I hope my GOD awful score doesn't put a target on my back... but hey who knows they may be thinking about the merge and be like well that kid wont be any competition for individual immunity so lets keep him around. The strategy about keeping the tribe strong I don't know if that is so relevant now bc so many people have formed relationships. But if my tribe still wants a strong team then I may be on the chopping block...

The tribe swap has definitely changed the game- you get comfortable and then the tribes all swap around. While there are people I trust on both my tribe, and people I don't, for me this vote comes down to who I think has been the most genuine with me, and while that might alienate me from some people that's a risk I'm going to have to take.

Eric, congratulations on attending your first tribal council this late in the game! How do you sus out where the vote is since you don’t have prior experience with tribals? How do you maximize this opportunity to send the right person home?

I guess it's important to take the time to chat with others, see how they all feel and take the time to understand what's truly going on. Um the animosity is most definitely coming to a head. I mean even now everyone can obviously see JG doesn’t know how to keep my name from out of his messages to the gc so far. there’s no way you can stop people from believing what they want and JG is obviously coming after me so we’ll see what happens.

Tim, on a scale of 1-10, how rat-like/snake-like is this game? Do you feel you’re playing with trustworthy people, or are you constantly watching your back?

On a scale of one to 10 I'd have to rate the game as of now as a 6. There ARE snakes somewhere because they are inevitable. However, there are different types. You have your garden snake, small and sneaky but common and mostly harmless when they bite. Your Phythons, the big bad snakes who think they're running the show but their fangs hold no venom. They are only deadly one you've came within their ever so "trusting" grip, but from a distance, they are spottable if you know what you are looking for. Finally you have your Black Mambas. NOW these snakes... are deadly asf. You may not even see them coming but once they bite your life in the game is up. I'd advise that you stay as far away as possible from this breed but their camoflage leaves you unable to know who or where they are.

I feel as though everyone is trustworthy but the extent at which they are varies depending on the context of the situation as well as your previous trust.

The Circle Review (spoilers)

SO I finished reading the Circle by Dave Eggers. I liked the booked alright. This is not something I would usually read but I was at the movies and the trailer for this came up and I was like damn that looks great. OH! and even better it is a book. Gotta read it. I ordered it off of amazon after the movie, thank you Dad for having prime! So at first I was a little bored but the men she encountered was interesting, like who is this mysterious man Kalden that shows up every 200 hundred pages? Oh and I had a great laugh at Mr. Only-Can-Last-A-Short-Paragraph. Poor girl! But this whole thing of the Circle being the main company for everything! At first I was like oh cool, that would be awesome to have all our information stored at one place where any one can see it. I work in the healthcare field as a medical assistant and let me tell ya. I HATE WITH A PASSION, trying to get medical records from other offices, ESPECIALLY when we are the primary care provider. Like HELLOOO this information is at most times very much needed ASAP. Good old Banner Health is great as in they have many specialties and use one system. So say you see your oncologist today and you need to follow up with your primary asap to coordinate care. GREAT just make the appointment, there is no playing tag trying to get records where they need to be. Which is not only what the Circle providers are doing but they take it a step further and have these bracelets, like fitbits, that track everything! Steps you take in a day, oxygen levels, heart rates and so much more. The employees at the circle are required to check in with their doctor every 2 weeks or if theres something wrong more often. They make their records public and Mae, the main character, has another doctor from across the world tell her that he has been following her charts closely and thinks she might end up having cancer down the line because of the things she chooses to eat. Like how crazy is that? So then they introduce this character,Francis, who seems like a solid dude...at first. Him and Mae have a thing start up and we learn that he was a foster child who’s sister was abducted and I believe killed? (cant remember at the moment.) And he has this idea to put this tracer on children that has so many features. It can track where child has been and where they are going, set boundaries so that if they are to leave them an alert will be set to you. I have a 5 year old my self so at first I am like OMG! This would be great! I love it. Never will I have to worry again where my child is. Sounds amazing. And there are things like that already out there, when I phone with Verizon I was told that they have this childrens watch. What it does is track your child but it also allows them to call out to two numbers of your choice and of course 911. Which is great, there would be many cases which this would be great for the child to have. But later on we learn that they are going to take this steps further. They are going to track childrens progress in school and then you can find out where they stand in this world. They will use the tech to track so many things. Later later on at what I assume is like the TV show Sharks. Members of the community share their ideas. Well some of the community members came up with the idea to have theses trackers in everyone. That they would light up different colors depending on the crimes they have committed, and the hope for the woman presenting this is that it would stop police from targeting innocent people.The next presenter after that took it even further to where there would be some kind of system that would alert the whole neighborhood and police when there was domestic abuse or inappropriate touching, ect. Now all of this sounds great! No more child abuse, spousal abuse, no violence at all! No rapes, no human trafficking. It would end all kinds of crime. It sounds amazing! Now I am going to back track a bit. About halfway through this book they came up with this idea of transparency. Basically no government secrets anymore we the people have the right to everything that is going on at all times. Theses elected government employees would where these small cameras everywhere. And I do mean everywhere they were not aloud to turn them off until they are in bed and headed for sleep. Mae committed a crime was caught and now she is going transparent. In doing so more things are being tracked, there are more eyes on you all the time, she would get MILLIONS! of people watching her every move. Think of the kind of influence you could have on the earth. That is power. So at a meeting with all the higher ups. Mae stated that all of government basically should be ran through the circle. Voting should be ran through the circle and that it would be a requirement to have a circle account. And when I say requirement I mean its against the law to be without. They would implement a system to where all your electronics would shut down until you voted. Do you see how crazy that is. The Circle account does not allow privacy, it does not allow things to be delete. Everyone, everywhere would have access to everything about you. Things you like, things you dislike, your location, your friends, the school you goto, who your family is, who you are married to, your children. Hmm sounds like something most people use daily. I know I do. This makes me stop and think. I dont want people to know where I am every minute of the day. I dont want people to know everything about me. I really dont want people to be able to track me down if they wanted. The image the circle has is that they are creating a utopia and its not. Some of their intentions are good. It would be beyond amazing to make sure that every child is never hurt again. But all this tech would eventually be used for evil, for lack of a better word. The Circle is what is starting to happen now already. The circle has eyes and ears everywhere. Doesn't that exist now? How many times has it happened to where you can talk about something, lets say taking a trip to Disneyland, and then when you go on facebook thats all you see advertisements for. I am pretty sure that is not a coincidence. I really hope this world doesn't become a reality because I may just end up like Mercer.

The Weird Origin Story of the Viral, Dangerous Hoverboard

A few weeks ago, I bought a new toy. $595 on Amazon, Prime shipping, showed up 36 hours after I clicked buy. It weighs 22 pounds, and, after about an hour of practice, I had it going top speed, about 6 mph. (It feels faster than it sounds.) I’ve fallen off it a million times, often after it does this weird seizure-crash thing that I cant figure out how to stop or predict.

My new toy is called a Two Wheels Smart Self Balancing Scooters Drifting Board Electric (blue), and it’s kind of like a Segway—but with no handlebars. It’s not a skateboard, but it’s kind of like a sideways skateboard? It’s like a scooter, ish? The world has mostly decided to call it a hoverboard. I don’t know what to call it.

Whatever it is, I love it. And it’s all Justin Bieber’s fault. It just looked so fun in his Instagrams.

All it took was one Instagram of Kendall Jenner on the board for the PhunkeeDuck to blow up.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve seen it before. It’s sort of a phenomenon. Here is a (very) partial list of celebrities who have tweeted, Instagrammed, or YouTubed themselves riding one in the last couple of months: The Biebs himself, Chris Brown (who is awesome at it), Nick Jonas, Zedd, Soulja Boy, Kendall Jenner, JR Smith, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, Nina Agdal, David Ortiz, Karim Benzema, and Skrillex. It’s been on the Tonight Show, and showed up at the NBA Finals.

Every time anyone uploads a video or picture of this scooter, the commenters all want to know two things: What’s that called, and where can I buy it?

That’s where it gets weird.

What’s in a name?

In late May, in front of a Fleet Week audience of military members, Jamie Foxx rolled onto the Tonight Show stage on a scooter. Once he figured out how to get off it, Foxx explained to Jimmy Fallon, “It’s, uh, a PhunkeeDuck,” as he rolled the board toward himself to make sure he had the name right. Fallon got on it, and did what everyone does their first time: wobbled jelly-legged for a minute, and then slowly inched around before getting comfortable.

That whole scene really annoys IO Hawk’s Curtis Hedges. Because, he says, that scooter was not a PhunkeeDuck. It was an IO Hawk, his companys product. Hedges tells me to look closely at the wheels, where there’s clearly an “IO” logo in the center. He’s laughing, too, as if he can hardly comprehend the idea that PhunkeeDuck isn’t stealing. And he’s right: PhunkeeDucks look just like IO Hawks, right down to the IO logos on their boards and wheels. That, Hedges says, is because they’re exactly the same thing. “Put a sticker on it, call it a totally different name, and start selling.”

That’s exactly true, actually. The PhunkeeDuck guys don’t even deny it. But they’re quick to dispute the idea that theyre rebranding IO Hawk’s board. “The owner of IO Hawk went around telling everyone he was the inventor of this product,” PhunkeeDuck co-founder Matthew Waxman says, referring to IO Hawk CEO John Soibatian.“That’s just completely false.”

PhunkeeDuck and IO Hawk are the two biggest players in this nascent scooter market, but there are many others. There’s Oxboard, Cyboard, Scoot, Future Foot, Monorover, Airboard, Freego, Esway, Airwheel, iEZWay, Overoad, and a hundred names more along the lines of Two Wheels Smart Self Balancing Scooters Drifting Board Electric (blue).

The real story doesn’t begin with IO Hawk or PhunkeeDuck. It begins, as just about any modern technology story does, in China.

Depending on which one you buy, you’ll pay anywhere from $600 to $1,800 for a scooter. But make no mistake: They’re all the same. The designs may vary slightly—sometimes the faux hubcaps are shaped in Mercedes-like triangles, sometimes there are five or six spokes—but like painting tiger stripes on your kitty cat, nobodys getting fooled here.

The real story of the scooter doesn’t begin with IO Hawk or PhunkeeDuck. It begins, as just about any modern technology story does, in China.

Made in China

Before we go any further, I need to admit that I don’t know, positively, where the scooter comes from. The Chinese manufacturing industry moves so quickly and with so little documentation that it’s basically impossible to fact-check any company’s cries of “first!”

But here’s what I think I know: Theres a company called Chic Robotics, which is also known as Hangzhou Chic Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd, and I think it invented the scooter. (There’s a scooter called the Hovertrax that predates it slightly, but it’s not quite the same thing.) Chic’s logo—the horizontal line on top of an oval that just so happens to look like “IO” when rotated 90 degrees—is plastered all over most versions of the board. And Chic’s name keeps coming up when you talk to the people selling the thing.

The company was founded in 2013, born in connection with China’s Zhejiang University. It was created to make stuff, obviously, but also to champion IP protection in China, to improve patents and copyrights and and foster what the company calls “sustainable innovation.” It holds a series of patents related to the scooter, and has diligently (and apparently pointlessly) attempted to protect them.

Chic’s first scooter was called the Smart S1. It debuted in August of 2014, with a goofy commercial that almost certainly isn’t meant to be goofy. It shows a man walking down the hallway, laden with heavy books and a heavy heart, before finally being saved by the smooth ride of the Smart S1. It’s like a bizarro take on a heartwarming Coke commercial.

In the fall of 2014, Chic took the S1 to the Canton Fair, China’s largest trade show. This semi-annual extravaganza attracts more than 180,000 buyers from around the world, there to see tens of thousands of Chinese exporters hawk their wares.

In China, the reward for being first is still just being first to be copied.

Chic’s supply of scooters disappeared quicklyeverybody wanted one. Soon, people were riding them all over the gigantic convention center. The hordes of buyers and suppliers were all over the Smart S1. Distributors across the world noticed, and so did other factories in China. Before long Alibaba was littered with manufacturers offering the same board—often using the same images and promotional videos, their logos hastily Photoshopped over Chic’s.

If you’ve seen one…

This manufacturing virality, where as soon as something is created it is immediately everywhere, isn’t unique to two-wheeled self-balancing scooters. It’s how Chinese factories make and sell everything from iPhone chargers to televisions to headphones. Or e-cigarettes, another recent favorite Justin Bieber accessory: Just about every brand is the same thing with a different label. “All you have to do is make a phone call to one of the six manufacturers or so in China that are producing these e-cigarettes,” says James Monsees, CEO of e-cigaretteer Pax Labs, “and youd say how much? And oh, I want it to be an orange tip on the end and say Orange on the packaging. Its an hour-long conversation…and youre in the e-cig business.”

In many ways, that’s one of China’s greatest assets as an industrial country. From iPhones to Harry Potter to Starbucks to basically the whole country of Austria, China’s ability to take anything and build it faster, cheaper, and maybe even better, is without equal. But China has made clear that it doesn’t just want to copy Apple anymore—it wants the next Apple to be Chinese. That would require better patent protection, and better regulation from the government. “The political economic institutions and system in China make it so entrepreneurs cant make profit by developing novel innovation,” then-Georgia Tech professor Dan Breznitz told the New York Times in 2011. As it is, the reward for being first is still just being first to be copied.

Because the Chinese manufacturing industry is so centralized, anything new spreads like crazy through the supply chain. One manufacturer creates a product; another reverse-engineers it and makes it too. And that next company can make it cheaper and faster, because it has no R&D costs. In most cases, this endless game of product-telephone makes the product worse.

Jeff Wells, who sells a scooter he calls The Scoot, ticks off a number of corners he’s seen factories cut. “Weaker motors, not as reliable batteries, gyro boards, improper motherboard design,” Wells says. “There are a lot of areas where they can shortcut.” He laughs when I tell him about my board’s nasty tendency to randomly start shivering uncontrollably, before spinning completely out of control and shutting down.

The PhunkeeDuck costs $1,499.99, and there’s a waiting list to get one.

“You probably, right now, have five manufacturers in China that are beginning to make these,” Wells says. He’s been importing products from construction materials to medical equipment for years, and says the key is quality control. “Youve got to tour the facilities, youve got to see them manufacturing over the long-term basis.” Because when factories take shortcuts, the problems that crop up can be hard to see in an online listing, and they can be devastating.

That’s why the Scoot costs $695, when you can buy a seemingly identical device on Alibaba for $200 or so. (He thinks the magic price is somewhere in the $500 range, though, and says we’ll be there by Christmas.) The craziest part? Wells is actually leaving a lot of money on the table. IO Hawk, an LA-based company with a virtually identical story (and product), sells its scooter for $1,799.99 and still can’t keep up with demand. The PhunkeeDuck costs $1,499.99, and there’s a waiting list to get one.

Lets talk about the PhunkeeDuck. Its sold by PhunkeeTree, a New York-based company that began as two guys repackaging and re-branding phone cases and chargers for stores like Nordstrom and Forever 21. Last year, the guys went to the Hong Kong Electronics Show, to talk to their existing suppliers and to see what else they could add to their selection of chargers, cases, and cables. “While we were there we actually found this other factory that for the first time debuted this product to a select few,” Waxman says. “And we happened to be in the right place at the right time, so we started working with them to customize our own version of it.”

“Customize,” at least in this first version, consists of putting PhunkeeDuck stickers on the board and its box. Waxman and co-founder Maxx Yellin say they’re working with the factory—which they won’t name—to modify it in more significant ways, and says patents are a-pending. But they won’t share details yet.

IO Hawk is a step ahead, having launched first—at CES in January—and already offering a few improvements in its model. Theres a metal frame, for one thing, which can take a heavier load. It can handle up to 400 pounds, though they don’t advertise it as quite that high. The company is also developing custom firmware for the device to make it run better. And, like PhunkeeDuck, IO Hawk claims it has big ideas it’s not ready to share for fear they’ll be stolen.

While they wait for patents to be granted and modifications to be implemented, though, this scooter just keeps popping up in unexpected places under new names. And with every celebrity appearance, every Instagram of Chris Brown dancing or Nick Jonas rolling into a pool, the pace picks up even more. After PhunkeeTree managed to get Kendall Jenner a board, thanks to a well-placed friend in LA, all it took was one Instagram of her being a little bit too confident on the board for the PhunkeeDuck to blow up. (That gram alone netted 1.1 million likes.) Celebs starting hitting them up left and right for samples, and as they shared their adventures on social media more people wanted to try them too. “We didnt have to ask them to post,” Waxman says. “They just loved it so much that Chris Brown was riding it around, and Wiz Khalifa was using it onstage.”

One of their most consistent askers was the rapper Soulja Boy, who finally got a PhunkeeDuck after months of pestering. A couple of days after his board arrived, a new device hit the market: The Soulja Board. $1,500, available in green and red. Its site, souljaboard.com, was put together so quickly there’s still dummy text on the About page.

“He starts posting, hey guys come buy my Souldja Board,” Waxman says. “And he’s standing on our PhunkeeDuck!”
