Now, I am got to say that I tend to adore the Hong sisters and their dramas. Some might call it a guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel particularly guilty about finding a lot of their dramas enjoyable. Some of my early favorites were written by them. And I do think they do a good job with fantasy elements in their rom-coms, so I was always super stocked for Hwayugi. I have now watched the first 3 episodes, and I have to say that I am not disappointed in it.
Also, I really like this cast. And the drama is just full of actors that have been in their previous dramas, which is always nice. And we got a cameo from Jang Geun Suk. I wonder if more people are going to show up. Both Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo have done Hong sisters dramas (though, I think most of us want to forget about Big) and Goblin was a big hit for TvN, so maybe we could get a cameo from them. Or Shin Min Ah, as a vengeful gumiho, or Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub as ghosts or something. I just get giddy thinking about it. Even if I doubt it will happen.
I like Hwayugi a lot, despite how long these episodes are. And they feel long. I am having the same trouble with Just Between Lovers, except I don’t find the same hook with that show as I do with Hwayugi. Hwayugi is just more my thing. It’s a quirky rom-com with fantasy elements to it. Even if the CGI may look a bit cheep at times, but that doesn’t really bother me.
I like pretty much all of the main characters, or I find them really really interesting and I feel like they have manage to set them all up, and introduce us to them in a way that sort of makes them likable. I especially like Jin Sunmi and how earnest and lonely she and how kind (and sort of easily trusting) she feels and how she has so desperately tried to make something out of her life, even if she has to deal with ghosts all the time and it scaring people away.  And Oh Seon Yeo is doing such a wonderful job here. I am so used to her being in a more comedic role, where she sort of goes all out with the silly comedy. But she does that so well, so it doesn’t feel over-the-top, unlike Cha Seung Won sometimes does (and he also did in The Greatest Love). I like him in the role, but I kinda wish he would rein it in a bit when he goes, cuz when he is being more serious I think he is great. I also thought that way in The Greatest Love.
Lee Seung Gi I have liked in pretty much everything that I have watched him in. This drama is no exception. He fits the quirky comedy of the Hong sisters really well. I think he brings something really likable to his roles, even if some of his characters start of as being immature and somewhat annoying.
The Hong sisters have done this very lonely, introverted woman that wants to be a ordinary person before, with Master’s Sun, but I feel like these two characters are very different. Sunmi isn’t really scared of the ghost, like Gong Sil was. It doesn’t stop her completely from living her life, although it is a big inconvenience. But since Sunmi has lived her whole life like this, she has sort of gotten costumed to it. I do find myself really feeling for her and caring about her and rooting for her happiness. I think it's really nice to see Oh Seun Yeo in a role like that.
And I have to say that I like this love-as-a-shackle plot device that the Hong sisters have got going on. And I can’t wait for the day that  O Gong realizes that these feelings are his own and not due to that bracelet. But in the meantime I am enjoying their somewhat reluctant partnership that they have going on.
Still, I find myself groaning a bit when I check the time on these episodes, cuz after watching 45 minutes I still have like other 40 minutes to watch.  When these sbs and mbc dramas started to cut their episodes in half, I though it would be such a nuisance, but now I actually prefer it. It is so manageable to watch a 30 minute episode than a 60+ minute episodes. I find myself stopping in a middle of an episodes, taking a short break (since you can exit both Viki and Netflix and they will just start the episode at the same spot as you left when you return), before continuing on.
I don’t understand why TvN insists on making so long episodes. We don’t need it. The episodes are just going to be ridden with fillers in the second half of the drama if they have to keep up with these long as episodes. And they are having some production problems as well.
I do find myself enjoying all the different side-plots, about the ghosts and stuff, even if I know some of it are just fillers. I just find that kind of thing so interesting and I do feel like they are written well into the main story. At leas for now. They might start to take away from the main story as we get further into it.
