it's been a while since I ranted about Hindi on here but Netflix having RRR in Hindi but not in Telugu has me right back on my bullshit.

I mean it's. a fucking Telugu movies ffs. It's just greattttttt (/s) to be reminded aGAIN that Hindi (slash north Indian culture in general in other contexts) is the de-facto answer to anything Indian. I mean it's annoying enough in the depiction of anything that's just "vaguely Indian", but fine whatever I can't expect every single facet of a very diverse country to be represented so whatever. but this!!! is a fucking telugu movie!!! by telugu people!!! about telugu people!!!! One of whom I've literally grown up hearing about!! now packaged for consumption by the whole world in Hindi :)))

I mean it's probably just a result of how licensing agreements and that stuff works (hopefully) more than being an intentional choice or whatever, but it still pisses me off. I mean, there's a reason I've never related to the term 'desi' - because all the connotations that word has for me have always been distinctly north Indian with minimal room for the culture that I grew up in. So as much as the popularity of Baahubali and RRR made me flinch (because if there's one thing I've learnt from my years of consuming media, it's that it never, never ends well if anything from my part of the world makes it onto international screens; that is and probably will remain my default reaction for a while tbh), it was still nice because ha, maybe NOW the rest of the world (rest of my own country included) will recognise that we're distinct from Bollywood, y'know? (Heck, it's not even North India as a whole that I take issue with, because Hindi being treated as ubiquitous also hurts other North Indian languages.)

Because yeah!!! RRR is not a Bollywood flick! Nor was Baahubali! It grates on my nerves when I see them being referred to as such. And now it's really annoying that apparently I can't even expect a film to stay in its original language when it leaves the country because of course everything Indian is automatically something Hindi when it comes to the rest of the world. the rest of us plebeians speaking other languages can go fuck ourselves I guess.

ANYWAY. AR Rahman's Pune concert being stopped midway in such a disrespectful way is BS. Granted, it was past the allowed time but that is something the organizers need to have planned better. A cop coming on stage and making him leave without even allowing him to say a proper goodbye is just effed up. He never even argued, just wanted to say thanks to the people who paid thousands to watch him geez. The cop should have gone to the organizers not the artist to end the show.

I am a proud hindu so i was angry about what happened to kashmiri hindus. but after reading up on it and the history of kashmir in general, one thing is really obvious: india failed kashmir (all of them not just hindus). It’s why I support their right to self-determination. I am based in America and I know several punjabis here who don’t consider themselves indian because their family/community was directly impacted by the 1984 anti sikh pogroms. ig i’m saying india has failed a lot of people (esp minorities) so if we are not from their ethnic group, we don’t get to selfishly claim them or impose our will on them. like i’m a kannadiga and i hate the imposition of hindi in my home state and while this is not even slightly comparable to the violence and trauma faced by kashmiris, punjabis and other groups, i would hate for a non-kannadiga (esp a hindi speaker) telling me how to feel and having the final say in the matter so kashmiri self determination just makes sense to me.

I hope you're aware of what happened in Kashmir to Kashmiri pandits. Pakistan has dreamed of Kashmir since it was formed. That's why they wrongfully attacked India the first time, securing only POK which sadly was due to the UN, and weak Indian political power. Since then, they have infiltrated our country, and approximately 300,000 Kashmiri Pandits are reported to have left the region due to constant persecution from the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and other militant groups, like Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM). In 1989, radical Islamists initiated an insurgency, fueled by covert support from Pakistan.

The party at the time did its best to hide this, and stifle it as much as possible, this got an ounce of coverage and light when The Kashmir Files was released

Hindus have 5000 years of recorded history with the land, that Islamists claim has “always been Muslim land”. "Kashmir" is literally named after Rishi Kashyap, if you're aware. On 19, January 1990 mosques blared out the infamous "convert leave or die" and finished their mission of converting the entirety of Kashmir to an Islamic state. Our pandits were told to leave their wives and daughters behind if they wanted to escape alive.

They're still living like refugees in their country, and now thanks to the scrapping of sec 370, things have taken a turn for the better.

Many Muslims of Kashmir still retain their Hindu surname. It was a deliberate attempt to wipe Hindus out that Islamists achieved and now THAT'S the free Kashmir they want, this slogan isn't promising actual Kashmiris that were displaced from their homes back, this slogan is furthering the agenda to chew Kashmir off India's map - the one true dream.

A similar approach is taken by Khalistanis, they aren't asking for Lahore, you know, the capital of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, they're demanding INDIA to give Punjab away. They are funded by Pakistan as well that's why they can't say anything about Sikh treatment in Pakistan. That's why they can't say anything about Gurudwaras converted to garbage bins. You obviously, being far away, aren't aware of what's going beneath the surface, they have vandalized various Hindu Temples.

They take the name of their Guru who sacrificed his life for India, while they stomp on the flag of India.

In theory, I guess it sounds easy to say "Well, disagreements are flaring up, so let's just split and give them their own thing". But this isn't how it works. Compromise and collaboration is how decisions are made in a democracy. This is our motherland, the last time we split was painful as fuck. The only reason India didn't fall apart after Independence is because of the formation of linguistic states.

I lived in Bangalore for the majority of my childhood, and I left 2 years before the entire language debacle began. I don't know if you know, but now Kannadigas are getting violent if anyone speaks Hindi. They demand you to speak in Kannada even if you don't know how.

You're based in America, so I'm not holding this against you, but I'm begging you, please do more research.

At the time of India’s Independence, Hindi was still a language in the making. The geographical reach of Hindi was not bigger than that of Telugu or Bengali. Hindi was not the mother tongue of people in Awadh, Braj, Mithila, Magadh, Bundelkhand, Ahirwal, Nimad, Marwar or Mewar.

In these areas, each language is unique and it is not easy for a Maithil person to understand Bundelkhandi or Brajbhasa.

As Hindi was not standardised in 1947, the government tasked the Central Hindi Directorate to do so.

After much deliberation, it was decided to use roman numerical. It is still not settled whether to use Persian/Arabic/Turkic words in Hindi or not and what is better, Sanskritised Hindi or Hindustani.

Echoing this sentiment, former CM of Madras Presidency and Rajya Sabha member P. Subbarayan presented a dissent note to the 1st Official Language Commission.

Subbarayan said “People who possess as their mother tongues well formed languages with a continuous literary history of over thousand years and more like Bengali, Assamese, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Punjabi feel very difficult about accepting this new policy about official language, particularly when by direct and indirect means, it is attempted to be forced upon them.”

Hindi was given priority over other languages in the Constitution.

Article 351 says, “It shall be the duty of the Union to promote the spread of the Hindi language, to develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the elements of the composite culture of India and to secure its enrichment by assimilating without interfering with its genius, the forms, style and expressions used in Hindustani and in the other languages of India specified in the Eighth Schedule, and by drawing, wherever necessary or desirable, for its vocabulary, primarily on Sanskrit and secondarily on other languages.”

This idea of making Hindi “a medium of expression for all the elements of the composite cultures of India” is flawed and deeply contested. Hindi was accorded this coveted position by the Constituent Assembly and not by Parliament consisting of elected representatives.

North Indian Hindi-speaking members of the Congress party in the Constituent Assembly insisted that Hindi was accepted as the Official Language of the Indian Union.

In the post-Independence era, Hindi grew but the growth was not organic. The Union government spent money to promote Hindi especially in non-Hindi-speaking areas so that it may be accepted as the link language nationally.

The Department of Official language was given specific task that involved “co-ordination in all matters relating to the progressive use of Hindi as the Official Language of the Union, including administrative terminology, syllabi, textbooks, training courses and equipments.

There is a Hindi training programme in place for central government employees since 1955.

The presidential order dated 27 April 1960 said “in-service training in Hindi may be made obligatory for Central Government employees who are aged less than 45 years.

The Union government is running these programmes across the country. In government departments across India, Hindi Day is celebrated and essay and typing competitions are held. Government rewards good performers in these competitions.

There is an Official Language Wing in the law ministry, which translates all government bills in Hindi. At the same time, no incentive is given to Hindi-speaking employees for learning other Indian languages.

In the field of education, the 1st Official Language Commission had put much emphasis on introduction of Hindi as compulsory subject in secondary schools in all non-Hindi areas, so that the next generation of Indians may be Hindi-knowing, It brushed aside the suggestion that students in Hindi-speaking areas in secondary schools should compulsorily learn another Indian language.

The Commission instead suggested that options for these students should include languages like Sanskrit, French, German, and Russian.

This was the mainstream idea related to the language policy just after the Independence that non-Hindi students must learn Hindi, but Hindi students should study Sanskrit or some foreign language.

Mass media also played a crucial role in the proliferation of Hindi. Until the 1990s, the Union government was in sole control of radio and television. Television broadcasting started in 1965 and till the mid-1990s, most of the programming was in Hindi.

Only after regional stations were established that things started to change. But by that time, the foundation had already been laid. During 1983-1991, many popular programmes and serials were launched in Hindi.

Mythological serials like Ramayana and Mahabharata became powerful vehicles to carry Hindi with the religious massaging.

DMK says BJP's 'torn slipper' remark an 'insult' to anti-Hindi agitation

The DMK said that the Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai's criticism of its anti-Hindi agitation, which he likened to an "old, worn-out slipper", was an "insult to the martyrs" who fought for the state language.

During a campaign event on Saturday, Annamalai said, "People of Sriperambudur should understand that someone is still talking about what was said in 1980. Hindi-Sanskrit, North-South, this-that. They still haven’t thrown away such old, torn slippers. This is DMK."

Hitting out the BJP state chief's remark, DMK spokesperson Saravanan said, "He insulted the martyrs of the language war. Tamil Nadu has a great history of waging a war against Hindi imposition."

He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on Annamalai's remarks.

"Why hasn't PM Modi condemned it? Annamalai has compared it (anti-Hindi agitation) to torn sandals. This is the respect people have for Tamil Nadu."

Meanwhile, the AIADMK said Annamalai was "foolish" to make such a statement.

“Insulting this (anti-Hindi agitation) only shows his character. Let me ask Annamalai why those who studied Hindi are coming to work here. But those who studied Tamil and English are going abroad or to Isro (Indian Space Research Organisation) and have become great doctors too. I can only see Annamalai’s words to be foolish," AIADMK MLA Sellur Raju said.

The language war has always played an important role in vote bank politics in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK's active role in anti-Hindi agitation in 1965 had led the party to win elections in the state.
