Meeting the Father
Summary: Michael is invited to a dinner with his girlfriend’s father. Her very intimidating father.
Rating: K - Intended for general audience 5 years and older. Content should be free of any coarse language, violence, and adult themes.
Words: 1900
Notes: So, my last HSS fic did not do so well, but what the heck? Here’s trash no-one asked for anyways.
Tumblr media
Every step they take on the paved courtyard towards the front door, the more their souls are filled with dread. Michael’s stomach was turning with anticipation, and he was having a hard time schooling his bodily language into as much of a neutral stance he could manage.
He is never like this. Yes, he is more anxious and concerned than he might appear, but it pales to what he is feeling right now. Michael is a slacker, had a famous Devil may care attitude towards life, but the façade came crashing down the day he was told he had to meet Amanda’s father.
He’s heard loads about Edward Rosenberg, Snr. Every time the boy saw him out on the town, and it was not that many, he found the man to be tall, intimidating, with a dark scowl that would easily make Michael a nervous wreck.
He really, really wanted for his very rich, very powerful girlfriend’s father to like him, to approve of him. He did not want to come off on the wrong foot, lest of all he decided to forbid his daughter from going out with him.
When he expressed his concerns to their friends, they were less than supportive.
“Amanda is an independent thinker.” Emma pointed out. “She wouldn’t let her dad dictate her love life.”
“She might not have a choice.” Luis weighed. “He might ship her back to that boarding school in Switzerland! Or, like, fire your parents!”
The blonde gripped her boyfriend’s arm. “Don’t say things like that. You’re making him nervous.”
“I guess that, what Luis is trying to say, is that Mr. Rosenberg is an intimidating person. He is rich and powerful. Comes with the territory.” Maria tried to smooth things over. “It doesn’t mean he uses it to control Amanda’s life, nor that he is a bad person.”
Aiden shuddered. “I remember when Amanda’s family came to see the school concert last year. They were staring so intensely, I could feel they judging me, wincing whenever I made the slightest mistake.”
“My parents say that Mrs. Rosenberg was a witch!” Myra piped. “She complained about everything, she was very rude… And even a little racist, honestly.”
“Michael is going to meet her dad, not her mom. They are divorced, they could be very different people.” Emma defended.
“He must be at least charitable. He underwrites the budget for the school. He effectively pays for our education.” Maria pointed out.
“That’s even worse! That means he could ask Principal Hughs to expel Michael!”
“Luis!” Emma chided.
Michael narrowed his eyes. “You’re really easing my worries here.”
“It’s true, isn’t it? Better be prepared.” He defended, and then turned to his girlfriend. “Why are you being so defensive about the man?”
“He was always kind to me when I stayed over there, and my mom says he is a very nice man.” The blonde responded. “I don’t know, I don’t see Mr. Rosenberg as doing any of those things. It’s weird.”
Maria patted Michael’s back. “It all will turn out to be fine. You’ll have Amanda with you, right? She knows her dad the best and will help you navigate the situation.”
Amanda, noticing the nervousness of her boyfriend, walked up to Michael, standing in front of him. She almost shook her head in derision, his hands were shaking quite a bit and yet, if she did not press him, he would never tell her what was wrong.
She grabbed him by the hand, causing Michael to look up at her. “He’s going to love you, I promise.”
Michael looked at her with pleasing eyes. “Are you sure?”
Amanda nodded. “My dad, he’s… Surprisingly shy and awkward. It comes off as intimidation and foulness, but he is a very nice guy. Eventually, he’ll warm up and you’ll never hear the end of his terrible, terrible puns. Just give it time and he’ll love you. You just have to be yourself.”
“Be myself.” Michael said. “Yeah, I guess I don’t have any choice.”
Amanda gave him a quick kiss on the lips, resting her hands on his chest, which was roaring unnaturally. “Ready?”
He just shrugged. “I guess.”
Amanda grabbed Michael’s hand and, with the other, opened the front door to the house. In there, a maid was waiting for them to arrive. She greeted with her head silently, and his girlfriend gave her the coat and the purse she was wearing. He awkwardly followed her lead.
With a ‘thank you’ from the young mistress, the maid disappeared into the labyrinthine house.
“She’s the one responsible for the cleaning.” The redhead provided, responding to an unasked question. “If we walk into the house with our wet coats, she would have that much more work to wax the floors later.”
Michael glanced around nervously, before landing his eyes on Amanda. She gave him a reassuring nod, before leading him inside through the hallways to find her dad.
“You’ve got one nice house, Amanda,” Michael commented, looking around in awe.
She shrugged. “I don’t like it very much. It’s too big. I find it rather lonely sometimes.”
Michael could see why, but he still believed it was much nicer than his, even if Amanda would gladly disagree.
The couple walked into the dining room, where another employee was setting up the table, with an unusually high number of cups and forks. Three seats were set, one in the head of the table and two others to the right. The redhead sat on the first, and motioned for Michael to sit on the second.
Three heartbeats later, the master of the house, tall, blond, with clear eyes and finely dressed, emerged from one of the doors. Upon the girl’s que, the two teens stand up from their seats to greet the arrival.
“Good evening, Michael, Amanda. I didn’t hear your arrival; I am sorry for the delay.” He said, with an easy smile.
Edward opened up his arms, waving his hands towards him. Amanda smiled, walking over to Edward. He envelopes her into a big huge, kissing the top of her forehead, but his face was visibly hardened when he made eye contact with Michael.
“You must be my daughter’s boyfriend.” He acknowledged.
Michael nodded frantically, walking over to him. Mr. Rosenberg released their hug as Michael reached out his hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you, sir. I’m Michael Harrison.”
Edward shook his hand firmly. “You’d be Reginald’s boy, right? I’m pretty sure he works at the mill.”
“Yes, that’s it.” The youngest confirms, nervously.
“Pleased to make your acquaintance, Michael. Let us be seated. We’ll be dining chicken; I trust it is to your tastes.”
They sat down at the table, and, as if on cue, the cook emerged from the kitchen, rolling a cart with the dinner course, while a maid served the goblets.
Amanda unfolded her napkin and set it on her lap, and signaled discreetly the correct order of the cutlery for him to use. It was a stark contrast, conciliating the prim and proper eating of hers today, with her voraciousness eating of a burger when they went out on a date last night.
As they grabbed what they wanted, Edward immediately began to ask Michael questions.
“You’re sixteen, correct? Which would make you a junior like my daughter?” He asked, and the boy nodded in response.
“Yes, sir.” He said politely.
“And do you do well in school?”
Michael shrugged, and reluctantly said, “Relatively, yes.”
Edward cocked an eyebrow at the answer and the gesture. “Relatively?”
Michael’s face began to heat up. “Yes, sir.”
His icy blue eyes measured the boy. “Your school is very demanding, yes, and it is so by design, but I hope you and your colleagues are seizing every opportunity we provide to you.”
“Dad, our school is just as great as the students that attend it, you yourself said that many times.” The girl pointed out. “Berry is a pretty great school, and Michael’s dedication and love for it is an important part of it.”
The man measured her words and decided to drop the line of questioning. Instead he elected his plans for the future. “What do you plan on doing after school, kid?”
Michael glanced over at Amanda, and she gave him a small nod. “Well…” He started, looking over at his host. “I plan on going to college, to study Film and Journalism. I hope to be a documentarist.”
Edward looked at him as though he wanted him to explain, so he did. He went into description of what he wanted to shoot, the places he wanted to explore and the kind of stories he wanted to tell, and how they plan on opening a business, once they can get enough money to do so. Edward nodded, listening to every word he says.
“That’s a nice plan, Michael.” The older man said after he finished. “Me, myself, besides some family engagements in Europe, I have never left New England. I like the feeling of being home, but both of my children take after their mother in that regard, they are inquisitive and daring, and I like how you can support each other in that regard.
“Now, I don’t know how well that will work out for you, though Amanda tells me you have talent, and for what I’ve seen of your student films, I am inclined to agree.”
For the rest of the dinner, Mr. Rosenberg asked Michael questions, evaluating neatly every answer he gives, as if in a job interview. Honestly, he was concerned with his daughter and wanted to make sure she made a good choice, or as good as one can expect a teenage boy to be.
The three of them finished their food, and the father had kindly asked Amanda to fetch a nice chocolate box he kept on the downstairs study. She nodded, taking leaving with pleasure. Her dad never offered to share those chocolates, unless the company pleased him.
Michael, not knowing the quirk of the man, had gave her a pleading look, wanting her to stay with him, but she ignored the plea and walked out without a word. He nervously looked down at his hands that were sat in his lap. Edward looked over at him, and started talking.
“Michael…” He started, causing the young lad to look up at him in a snap. “That’s my little girl you’re dating. She is my everything, she’s all I’ve got right now. I need to know you will do right by her.”
“I understand, sir.” Michael said, giving him a small smile.
“Of course, if you don’t, I have ways to make you fall in line.” He completed with a wolfish laugh. “Please do not make me resort to them.”
Michael laughed a bit, in nerves, but he understood the man a bit better. He was not about to step out of line, so he was not that afraid of him anymore. Squinting, he could even see the kindness Emma was referring to.
Soon enough, Amanda came in with the box in hands. The two of them stopped and pretended that nothing was said.
“Ah, chocolate!” The older man opens the box and takes one, appreciating it longingly. “I would tell you a joke about them, but they are no good, you’d just snicker.”
Amanda cringed. “Jesus Christ, dad.”
“You love’em, be honest.” He laughed.

I always like hearing about OCs, so could you do a playlist for Bladen or Oz (or maybe one you haven't talked about as much)?
A new challenger approaches after seven years! And for taking so long I’d like to make up for it by explaining my reasoning behind each song. They’ll be in no particular order and McFucking extensive in the lyric explanation I am so sorry (Like this shit is really fucking long and it’s best to just look at the titles and yeet)
1. Hey Look Ma, I Made It by Panic! At The DiscoThis song is honestly just… taken as fucking spitefully as possible. His mother abandoned him and here he fucking is? A loving partner and three beautiful, strong children who he will go to his grave defending and swearing they are all destined for greatness.
Are you ready for the sequel? (I take this as him talking about his boys)I’m gonna be the greatest (Bladen’s thirst for power)
And if you never know who you can trustThen trust me, you’ll be lonely, oh (Referring to those childhood years where everyone except his foster father was an enemy)
2. Boy in The Bubble by Alec Benjamin This song is for his foster dad. Bladen was technically a sheltered child with no real connections except for that man who greatly worried for him. It reminds me of him because Bladen never wanted fights but even knowing what the results could be
Punch my face, do it ‘cause I like the pain (Reminds him he’s alive)Every time you curse my nameI know you want the satisfaction, it’s not gonna happen (Bladen is nothing if not prideful. He knew what the kids wanted and he refused)Come the lightning and the thunderYou’re the one who’ll suffer, suffer (He always knew that the one that would regret it most are the people making life hell for him)
3. IMNOTYOURBOYFRIENDBABY by 3OH!3It’s half a joke song? He’s a horny son of a bitch I’ll be honest he’ll fuck almost anything that moves but miss him with that commitment bullshit. But there’s a verse that makes it less of a joke
Kill the lightsThese children learn from cigarette burns Fast cars, fast women and cheap drinksIt feels right  All these asphyxiated, self-medicatedTake the white pill, you’ll feel alright (He’s learned that experience is the best teacher, regardless of how harmful it is in the end)
4. Unheavenly Creatures by Coheed and CambriaI’m gonna keep it real with you, chief. This playlist? Half of it is about how fucking much he loves his partner. He lives and breathes for her and if she fucking told him to die for her he would.
We were young and had it all figured outShe was the quiet one and I had the mouthUntil she fell to me We escaped through the alley in the back Judge told me, “creature, don’t you dare go back!”But I couldn’t dodge the ringing in my headThe lonely, subtle voice, through the echoes as it said“Please don’t leave me here, my love”(Like I mentioned in the backstory, he had a plan and so did she. But then they really just forgot the plan, ran away, and decided all they needed was each other. He really still does feel guilty for taking her away from that life of luxury and, as he would say, dooming her into raising children [not that she ever minded? She loves them all so much])
There was something I forgot to tell her thenBetween the kiss and “knock 'em dead, kid”“There will be no other like you” (I don’t know what to tell you man he just fucking loves her and feels like he doesn’t tell her enough? As years go by he starts panicking about how he’ll outlive her. Every wrinkle on her face is a reminder that he’ll lose her)
5. As The World Falls Down by David BowieI fucking told you bro he just loves her. Side note: this cover? Fucking superb holy shit
As the pain sweeps through,Makes no sense for youEvery thrill is goneWasn’t too much fun at all,But I’ll be there for youAs the world falls down (He feels guilty about what she had to go through, being a vessel and all and now seeing her children carry that same risk because of his dumb choices and how he blindly sought out power. It’s not until years later that he realizes how much of a mistake it was and all he can promise her is being there for her through it all)
6. Saint Bernard by Lincoln Tell me where I came from, what I will always be:Just a spoiled little kid who went to Catholic school (He really is just a brat and while not catholic, he was part of a faith and that cult will forever be a part of him) When I am dead, I won’t join their ranksBecause they are both holy and free (This part is referring to his first cult because at one point he lost the faith he had in their deity, the deity that left the cult free in a sense due to them having something to live for)And I’m in Ohio, satanic and chained upAnd until the end, that’s how it’ll be (He’s the polar opposite of the cult, his chains are exactly that. The difference he bears from them and it’s a secret he’ll carry until he either dies or gets caught which could easily be the same)
7. Take Me Dancing by Will Joseph Cook Surprise! Another song about him loving her partner. This is an early days song, back when he was trying to win her over
And as I fall into the bottle bank [broken glass] You can make me into anythingAs long as I’m reflecting you (Bladen always saw the good in her. If him being broken by her meant he’d be reshaped into anything even remotely similar to her he wouldn’t have cared)
Don’t let this loveWell I could be the answer toAll of your prayersTake me dancing (Once he really started to fall for her, since that day one, all he ever wanted was for her to give him a spin)
8. Save My Soul by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Man this is one of the quintessential Bladen songs in my book. The rhythm, the words, and just the general aura of it
I consider myself lucky to have fallen in loveWith a girl, the city and the river of mud (He of course means Lilith and the place they’ve been hiding/living at)
Let me knowWhere I can go to save my soul (That deal with a devil eventually started to eat at him and he just wants redemption)I’ve heard Gabriel singin’ & playin’ his hornAnd lived to see the day both my babies were born (Rapture is always close behind him, or at least he feels like. His one consolation are his children and how they’ll carry out that legacy of his)
9. I’m Not a Saint by Billy Raffoul This one really fucks me up for him? This one is for when he’s entering those early thirties, seeing the real impact of all he’s done and just… reflecting to his best extent.
Had the taste of one too many lips hanging of my tongue, oh, oh (He’s had way too many partners, not that him or Lilith mind, but those lips brought some unforeseen responsibilities (more kids than he knows what to do with))  Sunday morning getting high, drinking here alone (Alone being what he’s now afraid of)Thinking up a brand new alibi for not coming home, oh, oh (He tends to disappear more than he should) And I’m sorry I lie so much (It’s all he knows how to do but he really is sorry)
Lord knows I don’t learn from mistakesAnd I’m not here unless I’m here by your sideI’m not a saint, but I could be if I tried (He starts to realize a lot near this age and all he wants to do is try. For her and for his children. They’re no longer some experiments in a cold search for power. They’re part of his life and he’s ready to dedicate himself to them but at this point it’s more than too late.)
10. Came Out Swinging by The Wonder Years This was one of the first songs I ever considered for him, tbh? It’s just such an optimistic song with the right amount of sad. This one is a mix of his early days and him nearing an older age
I’m running on empty The late nights and the long drives start to get to meI’m just so tired. (He’s been running around for a while. Oz is Lord knows where at the danger of being possessed at any moment, Mordei hates him and refuses to acknowledge him at this point, and his eldest has adopted their last name as their first name and is undead) I spent this year as a ghost and I’m not sure what I’m looking for. (This is in his youth, him just… searching)
I spent this year as a ghost and I’m not sure where home is anymore (Once again in his youth where lines started to blur)
My body feels rejected and I can’t say that I blame itMy heart keeps saying stay youngMy lower back seems to disagree (The contract was too keep him looking young, never aging so at later years it really takes a toll on him. He stops feeling like himself at some point and his body becomes more of an accessory)
And I spent the winter writing songs about getting betterAnd if I’m being honest, I’m getting there (This is a mid point in his life, this is after realizing how much he actually needs to try)

Have any of you out there in this wonderful wold of Tumblr ever seen the American President?
Tumblr media
The Wonderful masterpiece by the Genius that is Aaron Sorkin.  Well if you haven’t i highly recommend it.  Especially with the way things seem to be going these days it makes you hopeful for what the future can hold.... even though it seems bleak right now.  But that is no the reason I am asking this or bringing up this movie.  Every time I have watched this movie since Nov 6th 2016 different quotes have stood out and I want to share them with you and compare them with what I see happening in this country.
A.J.: [to President Andrew Shepherd] You've said it yourself a million times. If there had been a TV in every living room sixty years ago, this country does not elect a man in a wheelchair.
First off with this one, you need to know this is true.  And was sort of/more than likely proven with the election of our 35th President, Mr. Kennedy.  The debate between Kennedy was televised and Mr Nixon was I believe ill at the time and it was visible.  And as the very shallow society that we live in even more so now that we all live on the internet and with instant news that is how it happened.  Kennedy looked healthy so the vast majority of the American public voted for him.  But think about it and look deep into yourself, would you have voted for Roosevelt if you had seen him in his wheelchair? Do you think people chose our current president because they didn’t think a woman could run the country....(that by the way is a topic for another post)  I ask you to look deep within yourselves and think, really think would you?
President Andrew Shepherd: [while playing pool] This is NOT the business of the American people!
A.J.: With all due respect, sir, the American people have a funny way of deciding on their own what is and what is not their business.
This exchange here is 100% true.  An you know it.  This exchange it between the president and his chief of staff, who happens to be his best friend, basically discussing whether or not he should ask out a woman he is interested in.  While being the leader of the free world.  The President is saying how it is not the business of the American people about his private life.  And I agree with him.  However just as A.J. says we the American people have a funny way deciding what is our business.  We seem to believe that famous people, reality tv stars, political figures, professional athletes, and anyone in the public eye their lives are for us to care about.  When in reality if people were harassing you and making judgments about your life and your personal choices in the past and present then you would be pretty pissed. So maybe we should respect these people and their rights to privacy.  Because it is none of our business.
Lewis Rothschild: [in the Oval Office] You have a deeper love of this country than any man I've ever known. And I want to know what it says to you that in the past seven weeks, 59% of Americans have begun to question your patriotism.
President Andrew Shepherd: Look, if the people want to listen to-...
Lewis Rothschild: They don't have a choice! Bob Rumson is the only one doing the talking! People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.
President Andrew Shepherd: Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference.
I feel like I should just say I’ll leave this here but I’ll share my thoughts.  Lewis is right.  I think that is what happened last year.  The democratic party screwed themselves over, in my opinion, when they “picked” “nominated” whatever you want to call it Hilary.  First off yes as a woman, it would be nice to see a woman become president or hold high level offices, however I do not believe that this country is ready for a woman president, but not yet, not until the patriarchy has been crushed and we are all equal under the 14th amendment, like we are supposed to be,(ps that will also be a future post so stay tuned).  Anyway like I said they screwed themselves over with the Clinton pick over Sanders.  I believe that if Sanders had been the nominee then he could have beaten Trump.  And honestly if the vast majority of republicans weren’t so polarized to the right they would have seen that Gov. Kasich from Ohio was the best choice for the republican nomination.  Not some older white man who is clearly just saying things to anger the American people and get the people who have been silent for so long to come out in droves and vote for him.  Because the vast majority of people who feel the same way as our current president finally had someone speaking for them.  And Shepherd is right too.  Going off my last statement, these people are drinking the sand that is what Trump is giving them because they are so blinded by the fact that he is speaking to them, for them, that they think he is right no matter what.  (I know I will probably get called a snowflake for these thoughts that I am shouting into the void that is tumblr but I feel my voice needs to be heard.) I feel like they do not see how his extremeness and the way he lashes out at everything and everyone who disagrees with him are and will continue to damage and draw us further apart as a nation when we should be united as one.
President Andrew Shepherd: [in the white house press room] For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was, to a certain extent, about character, and although I have not been willing to engage in his attacks on me, I've been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being President of this country is entirely about character. ...  America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". I've known Bob Rumson for years, and I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it. Bob's problem is that he can't sell it! We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and character.
The parts that are in bold are the quotes that stand out the most to me and need to be discussed.  We shouldn’t fight with one another we should discuss with those we disagree with to understand them and so they can understand us.  And this country is about more than a damn flag.  That’s right I said it is about more than a damn flag.  The flag is a symbol but we the American people are the real symbol.  And fyi for those of you who do not know they don’t have to play the national anthem before sporting events they could play any song in the world they wanted to.  It is not a law or a requirement for it to be played before sporting events. It started with baseball in 1918 at the world series(read more about that here http://www.history.com/news/why-the-star-spangled-banner-is-played-at-sporting-events)  The second part that is in bold is what I believe happened last year.  Trump made people afraid and told us all who was to blame that’s how he ran his entire campaign( again this is my opinion).
A. J. MacInerney: [in the Oval Office] The President doesn't answer to you, Lewis!
Lewis Rothschild: Oh, yes he does A.J. I'm a citizen, this is my President. And in this country it is not only permissible to question our leaders it's our responsibility!
Finally the most important quote of the entire movie, comes again from Lewis.  As a citizen of this country, yes you are my president, I am not happy about it, but as a citizen of this country, it is my responsibility and right to question you as a leader.  You are elected and answer to the American people, and the media, or social media is our voice.  And yes sir I will concede and agree with you that the media is skewed way to much to left and as a person who is in the middle, I do not appreciate it.  However it is their right and my right to question you and seek the truth.  What are you hiding sir.  Why are you trying to distract the American people with all the tweets?   I have one final quote that I feel you sir will identify with and this character is correct as well with it but that doesn’t me you can be like him. Be the better man and listen to those around you and stop acting like a spoiled child   Col. Jessup: Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, *saves lives*. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a *damn* what you think you are entitled to!  (This is from A Few Good Men, another work from the genius mind of Aaron Sorkin, watch it if you haven’t.)  But he is right deep down we want to live in denial but the truth is we need to hear the truth no matter how much it hurts.
Thank you for listening/reading or whatever #crush the patriarchy
