Song of the Week!
I don’t know why there is an exclamation point . . . it just sort of happened.
Honorable Mentions:
So I have never heard of Park Ki Young. And I am pretty certain that Rain Rain Rain isn’t my style, but the video is a trip! I swear I recognize the actor, and I am getting whiplash from the tonal dissonance. Like all these lovey-dovey moments, with make out sessions, and then also really like depressing people sitting alone, or people looking soaking wet and sad in the rain. Maybe it makes sense when there are lyrics included? Making it is promoting making out as a solution to all of your problems? Who knows. Certainly not me. Though, bonus points to a music video that is SO DAMN risky (in the risque sense), even if it leans on a whole lot of cliches to get there.
Apparently we are at the summer party/club track part of the year, and Gyeong Ree is joining that group with Blue Moon. I love the chorus, and am fine with the chorus, though the break down in the end sort of confuses me but I still sort of like it? Either way, it is worth a listen.
Lovelyz is also bringing summer this week, if you are interested in a much brighter sounding summer, with Wag-zak (I don’t know what it means either).
Historically, my love of Jeong Eunji has been restricted to dramaland, with Apink’s music staying solidly in the bubblegum pop range. I’m So Sick is not that. And I love it for that. While it in no way sounds like Apink, they kill the song and honestly I love this as a new sound for them. Also, k-pop has been killing the breakup song genre recently, and I’m So Sick is another great addition.
Teen Top’s Lover manages to feel like it was meant to come out last summer and also be nostalgic, which is not an emotion I have for last summer, so I honestly have no clue how they are doing it.
I’m Not Afraid is a bit of a jam, sort of if Stranger Things and Troye Sivan had a love child in K-pop in the best way. I wish the vocal line was a bit more interesting, but on the whole it is a solid addition to Holland’s discography.
Jessi is out here shooting a Sports Illustrated cover for an MV, and I am loving it. And Down is both a fun summer track and something I wouldn’t have expected from her. It is not quite on par with Gucci for me though, so it didn’t quite meet expectations. Also, P.S., I want all of the swim tops from that shoot, they are all spectacular.
I definitely though Junoflo was going to be my favorite part of Yoon Mirae’s You & Me. Instead, the whole rest of the song is. It is simple and fun and sweet. And like, she just invited a bunch of friends over to shoot the music video in basically the simplest box set there is and it is still great. I did not expect to like it as much as I do now. I didn’t expect this to win, but damn if it didn’t come out of left field for the easy win.
