MK1 is such a bizarre experience bc on one hand some characters have benefited a lot from the "universe reset" (Baraka, Reptile, even arguably Shao who is less than a muahahaha conquer villain but someone who actually seems to care about his realm?). Others kind of raise interesting questions, like Shang Tsung : is he doomed to be bad or can he be good for a change? (In the story he choses to become a snake-oil salesman before joining the imperial family + there is an Union of Light Shang Tsung so him being good is a thing that could happen).

But then, instead of using that full reset NRS just leaves some things the same? Like. It's a reset. In 2023/2023. That was the perfect moment for implementing some (maybe not lots) changes. Perhaps starting making Johnny canonically bi? Just a small ripple towards a bigger change? Instead of getting stuck in same old ways?

I hated that they essentially just switched Liu Kang and Raiden's places. I started MK1 right after MK11 that i was furious to see Raiden chosen as the champion (IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY BOY KUNG LAO LET HIM SHINE ISTG) and then flirting with Kitana with Liu Kang's exact line (I hope we meet again under different circumstances)??? Tf??

I understand that some plot elements are too good to change but character romances? Don't replace one side of the pairing, then try to serve it to the audience again! Reboot should give us more variety of character designs, stories, dynamics, and relationships. Give us the genderbent, queer, poc characters BC YOU'RE NOT EVEN SACRIFICING ANYTHING when we literally have infinite alternative timelines you can recall classics from. For example, we have our human Raiden and old man titan Raiden. We can do variety. I wanna see female Fujin, i wanna see Scorpion Harumi and fighter Suchin, i want actual deserved queer representation in Kung Jin, and i. wanna. see. canon Johnshi!

My hypothesis is that NRS is gonna bring in mk children through dimensional travel so that they don't need to age up our current characters. I'm saying this to push my point further that we don't need to repeat romance plotlines (dont come at me. I have bais just as you have bais for ur fav old pairings)

Listen, i loved Sonya and Johnny in previous games, her and Cassie were a huge part of Johnny's character arc, but since Johnny is already maturing by the end of mk1, i don't see a point in Cageblade anymore (very controversial but it's my blog so i will yap as much as i want) We are not erasing anything by possibly making Johnny queer. Johnny and Sonya can be married in different timeline and Cassie is still their child. If anything, we are enriching the character, expanding the universe. Really, I don't wanna buy the exact same game story in different graphics. I don't want to see Suchin die again just to serve Kenshi and Takeda's dynamic.

And don't even get me started again on heteronormality of the game. We have 6 realms that have diverse variety of biological and sociological configurations AND YOU'RE TELLING ME THEY ARE ALL HETEROSEXUAL?? NRS is a fucking pussy for not having enough queer representation. They think they can give us vague "blink, you will miss it" moments and move on. There are so many high selling good games with good lgbtq characters. Literal 2023's the game of the year, BG3 is so fucking gay that it's off to space and you're telling me that NRS is just going 🥺👉👈 but our fans 🥺👉👈

Hello, I share your indignation about the new part of MK. Everything was changed too much and strangely. Can you write down the moments you didn't like? For example, I’m not happy with this whole situation with Kuai Liang - Scorpion, Tarkata - a disease, Raiden - Liu Kang 2.0, Fujin - Raiden’s sister, who is Kung Lao’s lover, seriously?

I WILL STATE that i have not bothered to look at everything myself but hear from reliable sources of the basic information of the game so i cannot give a full and fair critique. And i will not give this game anymore attention than i already have given it since it is just NOT a mortal kombat game.

Lets talk about the reasons you listed bc i agree.

Kuai liang as scorpion and in role reversal:

I am not a fan of this even remotely being "canon" Although the idea should be explored by fans WHO UNDERSTAND BOTH KUAI LIANG AND HANZO HASASHI AS CHARACTERS ORIGINALLY. It completely disrespects hanzo as a character and erases his connection to scorpion being a "gimmick thing to slap onto someone" as a title rather than a personal journey of meaning. And kuai deserves more respect as well, originally being an assassin whose clan tried to "modernize" by removing free will of warriors to ensure obedience and make their spirits and talents disposable. Trying to fight against that. It seems ironic in the end his fate is nothing more than to be toyed with by this unoriginal and uninspiring "role swap au lolz"

The tarkatan race being a disease:

I shouldn't even have to clarify how fucked up this is. Right after in mk 11 we saw tarkatans just being another race living in outworld minding their own business, and kotal fucking up (kotal khan is a wasted character but thats for another post) so we got what was once a "bad guy evil race" to something better. AND THEN THEY FUCKED IT UP AGAIN like isnt that, at best, the most tone deaf shit after what happened in real life with a certain disease and people being uber racist??? And dont get me started on how they messed up mileena with that too. (God damn the writers fucking hate her just as much as kung lao)

Raiden role reversal:

Let me tell you as a raiden enjoyer i fucking HATE them making him a basic ass protag like they did with liu kang (i love liu but lately they just removed all personality from him) its so fucking uninspiring and boring as shit AND THEY MAKE HIM CHAMPION INSTEAD OF KUNG LAO???? THE ABSOLUTE DISRESPECT WHAT THE FUCK i love raiden but he doesn't deserve champion title, that belongs to KUNG motherfucking LAO.

Fujin being a sister????:

Listen i havent seen it but this is the dumbest ass shit i have ever seen in my entire life. As if they couldn't show how little they actually care about fujin......

I mean you cant even get shang tsung or marjory of fan desired characters without dlc and the base game is like 60-70 bucks like the fuck????

As a regular fighting game? Mid but enjoyable i guess. But as a mortal kombat game? No, thats not even mortal kombat thats just some dumbasses wattpad fanfic after they watched avengers endgame in their crusty batman shirt

I'll end this with a small side note: if my opinions offend, I'm sorry im passionate about a series that was a part of my childhood and made me appreciate Japanese and Chinese culture and kung fu cinema in general. Im sorry if the memories of playing a fun game and caring about the characters having strong bonds of friendship in a violent world designed to be a "kill or be killed" system and despite that choosing to do the right thing in their mind.

ill give two, one for soulcalibur and another for mortal kombat

for soulcalibur, it would probably have to be hwang and mina. i dont think theres anything wrong with them and i dont really object to them being together. i honestly think sc6 gave them a really cute moment together after gaboks siege on the dojang. but idk i feel like they dont really give me a reason to care about them? they feel like a very bland version of kilik and xianghua. kilik and xianghua are easier to want to follow along with because there are hurdles you want to see them get past in order to find their happiness. the hurdles break your heart when you see that they are getting in the way. but that just makes the cute moments all the more endearing when we get them. sc3 arcade endings were all so sweet to watch and xianghuas sc4 ending legitimately made me tear up.

so then i turn to hwang and mina and wonder what it is that they have. like they arent BAD by any means. but like mina has a bit of stubbornness to overcome and her desire to be independent gets in the way of her settling down. but i feel like in the grand scheme of things there just really isnt anything for me to dissect or sink my teeth into when comparing them to the other ships i care about within soulcalibur. if someone who loves them wants to sit and tell me about why, i would happily listen and i am more than open to having my mind changed! but like as it stands, i am as indifferent as i can be on them as a couple

for mortal kombat, i already know that everyone and their mother is going to be at my throat for this but i dont really ship liu kang and kitana lol. i mean in the second timeline, especially in mk11 and in aftermath they were kinda cute. but then mk1 tore them apart and its kinda permanent, to the point where they dont even exist in the same universe anymore so i have to just wonder what the point is. i am not someone who likes angst for the sake of angst, if something angsty happens i want some sort of payout. i want development, i want the angst to be overcome, like just give me something. but mk1 does absolutely nothing except give us a two minute long moment of fanservice. no intro dialogues between titan kitana and liu kang, no reason to believe that they will get to be around each other more now, no exploration of liu kangs loneliness now that he is a god and is not in a place where he can have normal relationships anymore, like the ship just kinda sits there and doesnt do anything. they have their cute moments, yes, but its just really boring to watch

mortal kombat is such an interesting game to me. its a series i ALMOST want to get into, but dont for a couple of reasons.

its entirely too violent for me. im not really a fan of that sort of extreme violence. i know what that is what the series is kind of known for, but i also feel like its kind of just a holdover from the past that isnt really needed anymore. and itd be nice if the developers werent traumatized by having to look at gore pictures in order to render the fatalities.

secondly, the animation just...looks so bad to me. this is also kind of a staple of the series, but it def shouldnt be. it brings down the game, especially as the character models themselves are some of the highest quality in all of fighting games. maybe less money should go into the fatalities and more into making animation that looks fluid. mk1 just came out and already next to sf6 and tekken 8, the animations just look bad. ive read theories that its due to how they mocap and the lack of key poses, but i really wish they would clean that up.

i feel like the series has a bunch of really really cool characters and the stories are better told than pretty much any other fighting game, but there are some characters that they keep bringing into the modern age that i kind of think just suck ass, no matter how hard they try to modernize them. quan chi sucks. no amount of anything makes quan chi cool. he sucks.

i usually go and watch the story modes for the games because they are fun, well acted and well told. i see characters like liu kang, kitana, and kung lao and im like "man, i want to play as them, they look sick!" but then i watch the gameplay and im like "blegh this looks like poop"

I finally finished watching the story modes of MK9 and MKX today! Here are a bunch of completely random unconnected thoughts:

I know MK9 was theoretically the best the series had looked up to that point but boy howdy am I glad I don’t have to look at it anymore XD Especially the women, those outfits cause me psychic damage

MKX was LEAGUES better, though everyone’s skin looks weirdly shiny? I’ll take it though

The Kombat Kids are all my children now, I love them and feel even more robbed of the male half of the squad in MK11. Kung Jin in particular is best underappreciated boy, his chapter was fantastic.

I felt bad about it but I hit a point in MK9 where I was just laughing over the degree to which EVERY decision Raiden made just made things worse and worse. Like he was doing his best but wow what a fucking mess. I didn’t even blame Liu Kang for trying to kick his ass at that point.

His death was actually pretty gruesome though. I also kinda don’t blame him for just staying a revenant fuck all of that noise. Though I am very excited to have young alive him and Kung Lao back in MK11

I find it hilarious that you fight minor personal disputes the exact same way that you fight life or death battles. Like obviously this game only has one mode of combat but it just is really funny to me.

MK9 was unfairly mean to Kung Lao but I already knew that. Leave him alone

Jax is great

I really liked human Cyrax? Let him exist more as a not robot he’s a chill dude. Nightwolf is also chill

Sindel and Sheeva can still step on me that opinion has not changed since I was like 10

Mileena’s first line in MKX was to call Tanya “dearest” we stan some evil bi ladies. Though tbh I felt like Mileena had a valid point in that game

Young Johnny is funny but obnoxious, but I actually really enjoy the older Cage family (in their “divorced but not because we don’t care about each other” way). Also good on them having Johnny get captured at the end instead of Sonya, there’s been enough of that. Put him in that stupid leather dress from the 95 movie next time.

Every time I consume a new piece of MK media I think I will finally understand the appeal of Liutana and it never happens. I feel like they’re just The Protagonist and The Princess and we’re supposed to just automatically know that they go together because that’s a cliche but I’m like. No you have to make them have actual chemistry.

I should probably have more opinions on Kuai and Hanzo since they’re everybody’s fav but I’m just like. They’re there they’re cool you go dudes. I liked their tea party with gigantic bowls of tea.

Oh Kenshi also exists he’s cool! I like the telepathy stuff, though I also don’t blame Takeda for being like “Dad what the FUCK”

Those zombie goat things the revenants in MKX ride are cool as shit.

Rain’s watery teleportation thing is weirdly off-putting to me? XDD Like. I feel like he’s just damp at all times and I hate it. Also he’s a tool.

Even if Fire God Liu Kang did restore the timeline in the end of MK11, how can we know if his wingman Kung Lao, Jacqui’s existence, Cassie’s team members Takeda & Kung Jin, Young Johnny’s union with Sonya to conceive Cassie, Kotal’s affair with Jade, Cyrax, and Hanzo’s rebuilded Shirai Ryu hasn’t changed? Time travel can alter things for better.... or worst. 😰😰😰

It sure will change everything because it’s not Kronika who’s controlling the timeline now. But the results of all timelines is one, for all these characters to exist in one way or another.

These are my Theories, they’re mine only they’re not canon in any way or form: These characters existence is the nature of the timelines (even the bad characters), they should exist no matter what.

I dont think Kung Lao will be Liu Kang’s wingman anymore, he has Kitana by his side now, another immortal he could spend eternity with. Although I have a feeling Liu Kang was grateful for Kung Lao in many ways. A lot of things will change for Kung Lao.

To speak of other things, like Cassie and Jacqui being born, like I said its in their destiny to exist, so their parents’ will meet each other and fall in love one way or another if not the way they did before.

Kotal and Jade, If Shao Kahn still manages to do what he did before, they might not meet again.

Cyrax’s cyberfication falls onto Sub-Zero tbh, if he’s aware of the upcoming danger and somehow manages to save his friend, it’ll change Cyrax’s fate.

As for Shirai Ryu’s rebuilt, I believe Hanzo will manage to do it, only if he let go of his anger and make peace with himself first. His wife and child will die (it is not something he or anyone can stop, not evem Fire God Liu Kang. its just fate. If you won the first klassik tower with Hanzo you will know his ending). But what comes after his lose, its his choice if he wants to let go of his anger and make peace with Lin Kuai or not. If he manages to do it, he will succeed in rebuilding his lost clan.

As for Raiden, I have nothing for him. In my mind its all blank. I never knew him as a mortal , no one has so its hard to imagine or think of theories of how or what he will be doing tbh.

thoughts on the MK 2021 movie, MK9, and MKX

so after watching the movie, i dived into the actual games a little bit. ive read that its best for newcomers to start with 9 and work their way from there, so thats what i did.

ill start off by saying that the story really surprised me, especially in MK9. i know im setting myself up for failure by being invested in the lore of a fighting game, but it was actually pretty interesting. i mean, it was nothing revolutionary of course, but i still liked it.

MK9

i really liked the story of MK9, especially the writing behind Raiden and Liu Kang. original!Raiden only sent MK9!Raiden an extremely vague warning and he just had to make do. but there was tons of nuance to it because whenever he tried to do smthg differently, things always ended up the same or worse. Scorpion still killed Sub-Zero because of Quan Chi’s meddling, some of the characters still turned into cyborgs, and then by the end almost all of the good guys were dead.

i also liked the nuance of Liu Kang not necessarily being an antagonist, but just growing disillusioned with Raiden. Raiden kept talking about ~these visions~ that were guiding him, but things still kept turning out fucked. we, the audience, know hes not wrong, but Liu Kang doesnt know that, so him thinking Raiden has just lost it makes total sense. especially with his “we have to let the supervillain win” logic in the end. i genuinely think the only thing Raiden did wrong was accidentally kill Liu Kang in their fight. like it sucks that most of the previous good guys were dead, doomed to work as Quan Chi’s minions for all time, but at least Earthrealm was saved... right?

MK10

while i think MK9 had the most interesting story, i liked MK10 just as much for different reasons. the plot was everyone dealing with the aftermath of MK9, so i was glad for the continuity. the tension between Earthrealm and the new leader of Outworld Kotal Kahn; new kids on the street Cassie and her team wanting to join the fight; Scorpion/Hanzo and Kuai Liang making amends and Hanzo finally learning the truth about Quan Chi; Jax overcoming his trauma of being an ex-revenant; current revenant Liu Kang not necessarily liking his fate, but still holding a grudge against Raiden for killing him; etc. the plot of MKX overall felt like a well fleshed out premise. its really hard for such a short game to fit in so many moving pieces, but it did and it worked well. in my opinion anyway.

i think the one criticism i’d have would be the way Cassie Cage was handled. i know power scaling is virtually impossible in this series since characters defeat others based on what the plot needs rather than on actual power, but Cassie defeating superpowered Shinnock was just a little much, especially since we saw Sub-Zero sock the shit out of her only, what? days before?? maybe it wouldve been better if the New Kids™️ all worked together to take down superpowered Shinnock, now that i could see. but for rookie Cassie to do it all on her own... idk. like i was proud of her, just kinda confused lol.

but one other thing i really liked about MKX is the development of Dark Raiden. it makes complete sense that after the bs Earthrealm has had to deal with just in these two games alone, he’d be sick and tired. him not giving anymore fucks is very interesting and im curious to see what theyre going to do with it when i go into MK11.

tieing back to the movie

when i first watched the 2021 movie, i thought it was a decent turn-your-brain-off action flick. the graphics were well done, the acting was good, and i love Lewis Tan. i read that a lot of hardcore MK fans didnt like the character of Cole Young. “why did they introduce a new character??” i thought who cares? its a new medium so it made sense that strangers to the series (like me) would need a fill in. besides i had heard rumors that new characters got released practically every MK game so that complaint felt almost hypocritical if anything.

now that ive gotten into two of the games tho, while i still dont think creating a new character was a bad call, i do understand the criticism a little more. Cole is a descendant of Hanzo, but Hanzo’s entire schtick is that his whole family was killed by Quan Chi. like thats his main motivation for wanting revenge. thats his whole plot. by the movie pulling a “hidden baby in the floorboard” it feels a little... fanfiction-esque in terms of an origin story. i still liked Lewis’ performance tho and think they shouldve just went with making him an already established character (maybe Kenshi? idk), or still a new character but just not attached to the one guy who’s entire backstory is being the last of his line.

i do still think the movie was pretty good tho, especially for an adaptation. they changed some things, like i believe the human characters in the game just had supernatural powers from birth (im assuming??) meanwhile in the movie, they get them from the tattoo/scar a champion gets. thats a fine change imo.

conclusion

all in all, the series is better than i expected. i liked the story of MK9 and X, and i have yet to start 11. ppl said MK9 was a quick skim of all the previous games, and i think it did relatively well at not feeling rushed. everything made sense. the only time i was confused was trying to figure out which Sub-Zero was which between Bi Han and Kuai Liang, who became Noob and who became Cyber, and who the hell got resurrected in X (i know now it was Kuai. RIP Bi Han, i knew you for 5 seconds and you were a dick the entire time). my favorite characters lore wise probably have to be Kitana, Takeda, and Kung Jin, while my faves gameplay wise probably have to be Sonya in 9/Cassie in X, Nightwolf, and D’Vorah.

Attack on Titan (choosing this since TR is very predictable haha :D. And I havent played AC in years!)

The First Character You Loved:

MK: Believe it or not, MILEENA. This was all the way back in the mid/late ‘90s, when I used to play the heck out of MK2 on my outdated SNES (violence never bothered me i guess :p). My sister would play Kitana and I’d choose Mileena, thinking ‘Oh they’re sisters too! YAY! Just like me and my sis! ^_^’

And then one day I came across this spectacular beauty:

Haven’t played Mileena since.

MGS: Solid Snake. I mean, how can you not! He’s so lonely and tortured and broody <3

AOT: Mikasa :) Also, Hanji!

The Character You Never Expected To Love So Much:

MK: KENSHI! I still remember the first time I came across him - I was playing as Johnny Cage in MKA, Ladder Mode. And this weird blindfolded guy just waltzed in and whooped my ass four times in a row. I’ve been in love ever since :’)

MGS: Raiden. I have my friend (are they still around?) Gray Fox anon to thank for that!

AOT: Erwin Smith <3

The Character You Relate To The Most:

MK: Honestly, nobody. I’m kinda like Sonya in terms of work ethic, never-say-die attitude, but that is the full extent of that. MK-world is a pretty tough place to live in imo.

MGS: Again, as above. But with slight inclination towards Meryl. I kinda share that rookie/”too green” label, with my lack of experience in a lot of ways, but I’m also extremely ambitious at times - and view the world through many rose-tinted glasses occasionally. (Hope I choose my man more wisely tbh :$)

And here might I also add: Big Boss - as far as following goes. He would have followed the Boss till the end of the world, and far beyond that. I need people in my life to be that anchor, that guiding light - I’d be lost without it. (Maybe this wasn’t the greatest example :/)

AOT: To an extent, Mikasa. For reasons above mentioned :)

[Of course I’m much less interesting than any of these chars]

I would have chosen: (Romantically)

MK: Idk, Kuai Liang? I feel he’s somehow the sanest among the bunch lmao :D Kenshi, although the very thought makes me giggle like a school-girl, I feel he’d be way too intense haha.

MGS: The OG KAZUHIRA MILLER :’D (Such a difficult choice between him and Solid Snake honestly)

AOT: Erwin *heart eyes*

The Character You’d Slap:

MK: Sonya (for being so warped up in her work!) Kenshi (for leaving Suchin), Jax (he’s dumb sometimes), but most of all: KUNG JIN. That boy needs to reign that mouth in :P

MGS: Meryl - for marrying an idiot like Johnny.

AOT: Erin, multiple times, cuz he’s so dumb.

Three Favorite Characters (in order of preference):

Character You Liked At First, But Don’t Like Anymore:

MK: Liu Kang. But I mean, its not that i dont like him, I just .... i thought he became bland :/

MGS: Rose. Fuck Rose.

AOT: Reiner (spoiler alert lawl).

A Character You Didn’t Like At First But Do Now:

MK: Hanzo. I thought his story was so done and dusted, but really once I started writing about him, I just discovered how layered he really is. Also Raiden - not that I hated Raiden, but just that I wasn’t aware of how complex these guys were until much later.

MGS: ...... Quiet, i think. Yeah.

AOT: Jean. So underrated!
