As much as I love Frontiers, in retrospect there are some parts of it that feel GLARINGLY unfinished. I mean there's the obvious lack of polish and the pop-in issue but the more I think about it the more Rhea Island sticks out to me as unfinished.
There's so much space, so many little details and bits of ruins everywhere, but the lack of platforming structures like the ones on the other islands makes it all look really empty in comparison. There's only a few platforming sections (mostly rails) between the towers to get you from one tower to the next faster, and that's pretty much it.
It really feels like there was meant to be much more going on with that area, yet the only thing you do is go from tower to tower, have a bit of plot happen, and immediately move on to Ouranos. You aren't made to explore at all despite the ruins and such scattered about and the very important plot stuff happening. That combined with how the whole thing with Sonic's cyber corruption was resolved makes that whole section of the game feel rushed.
I just can't help but wonder what could've been, had Sonic Team not been under time constraints. It's kind of sad honestly, knowing that there could've been more planned for that area that we never got to see because of the deadlines they had to meet.
Man fuck crunch culture fuck holiday releases I want my game out when it's done dammit

What happened at Summer Games Fest 2021?
E3 started earlier than expected, as depicted in this comic from yesterday. I watched the whole mystery event, and I come to you now with a 100% accurate recap of all the important announcements.
You can watch the actual trailers at this handy website.
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
This was a DLC for Borderlands 2 that was so popular, Gearbox decided to expand it into an entire game.
I like Borderlands but it's a hard series to like. It's half super fun guns & treasure, and half bad jokes. And the series often puts a full stop on the guns & treasure to tell these bad jokes.
Create-a-character and multiclassing sounds good, but emphasis on melee combat and celebrity VAs sounds bad. I hope it turns out good, but my hopes are not high.
Metal Slug Tactics
Okay, yeah, at first glance this is another "use old IP for a cash-in mobile game", but the tactics style feels like a decent fit for Metal Slug. It's very Advance Wars.
Death Stranding Director's Cut
Tumblr media
Jurassic World Evolution 2
Jeff "get the stink blown off you" Goldblum appears to reveal a Jurassic Park game that we now know is inaccurate because the dinosaurs aren't depicted as having feathers.
Salt and Sacrifice
Not the Soulslike people were waiting for, but it should be a decent game regardless. I felt personally attacked when the man said "I exist only to hunt mages". Consume as many as you want, mages will always be better than you, buddy.
Solar Ash
This was one minute of the character grinding on a rail and doing a homing attack. I guess with no Sonic Adventure 3, this will have to do.
Chivalry 2
I call it "DeGroot Keep 2".
Two Point Campus
"Crushing Debt Simulator".
The Anacrusis
"Left 4 Space".
Vampire: The Masquerade: Blood Hunt
Tumblr media
The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes
The US Military goes on a field trip to Cthulhu's Funhouse, with hilarious results! I like the concept but military characters tend to be pretty boring. Definitely rooting for Cthulhu here.
Tales of Arise
Good: Paladin lady
Bad: Boy with obnoxious voice (probably the main character).
I'm not usually a JP voices kind of guy, but man, I get it.
Planet of Lana
This game is easy to remember because of the title spelled backwards. Looks very pretty but the trailer features exciting gameplay features like:
-Hiding
-Struggling to make simple jumps
Probably not for me.
Overwatch 2
Players are still mad because of the new 5v5 format screwing over offtank players, so to make up for it the devs dropped a huge announcement: Baptiste and Sombra are getting slightly updated models.
Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance
They kill a big goblin creature and it flips them off. I didn't think that was a thing in the official D&D universe, but maybe I'm just not up-to-date.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Isn't it a little weird that you spend the whole series killing mass quantities of these monsters, but you have to be nice to them here? Is it just me?
Endless Dungeon
The robot has massive thighs for some reason.
Far Cry 6
Giancarlo Esposito is too good for this game. I hope he gets a fat paycheck.
Fall Guys
Someone on twitter said it best.
Back 4 Blood
"Left 4 Three".
I'm thinking about picking this one up when it comes out. Co-op might be less nerve-racking than PvP for multiplayer games(???). No new info today though.
Elden Ring
This is the megaton announcement everyone was waiting for. They finally revealed that the Souls team is making a Soulslike.
MVP of the trailer is the jar with arms and legs that appears for one second.
In conclusion:
There were a lot more game announcements than I expected, and two or three that were actually interesting! Glad I didn't miss this.
Next up (according to this schedule) will be Ubisoft’s presentation around 3EST tomorrow, unless something else weird gets announced ahead of time.
There was also a showcase of indie games after the Summer Game Fest kickoff. I didn’t see them live, but there was some good stuff in there. Garden Story is appealing, and I like Soup Pot too.
Feeling positive so far! Let’s see how the weekend goes.
