something i love about musical theatre is that there's no sequels. you go to the performance and that's it. it's brought to life in different ways, sure, it may have references to other properties, but you don't need to watch them. everything can be self-contained. and when We Live In A Society where everything gets a live-action remake, or a sequel, or is a part of a Cinematic Universe, or is a musical remake, the fact that you can just enjoy a musical without having to catch up on a bunch of other content is a relief.

I know nothing about the Phantom of the Opera except that the really nice man gets cucked by some dramatic sewer dude and there's a really crappy sequel where the lady lead is pregnant with sewer boy's child. Doesn't good guy Raoul still try and help her raise the child or am I flying off the script?
VFDKNJDFJKVN ok so. phantom of the opera is a gothic horror novel by gaston leroux. raoul and christine end up together, as they should.
phantom of the opera is ALSO an andrew lloyd webber musical which is what most people know it through; again, christine and raoul end up together as they should. andrew lloyd webber wrote phantom partly as a gift for his wife at the time and he REALLY identified with the phantom, to the point that 24 years later he wrote a sequel musical to phantom entitled 'love never dies'
in which poor lovely raoul is reduced to a gambling addict abusive drunkard and it turns out christine had the phantom's child after sleeping with him the night before the wedding (and has been raising the child as raoul's), only she's been invited to sing at the phantom's fancy new coney island theme park (not knowing he's the phantom) and they need the money because of raoul's gambling addiction. raoul tries to get her not to sing and the phantom makes a bet with him that if she does raoul will leave her alone so idk the phantom and her can be together forever. in the end - spoilers - , christine just fucking dies after being shot by meg giry, a former ballerina at the opera who (along w/ her mother) helped the phantom escape and has a crush on him but has been relegated to the leading lady of his Bawdy Bathing Costume Routine (bc she isnt as beautiful and perfect as christine i guess bc her mother bribed businessmen with her body to help invest in the phantom's fucking theme park).
it's. a lot. would not recommend. i was in musical theatre fandom (mostly les mis, but as a british theatre fan u kind of end up being in all of them bc ur faves float around from show to show) at the time of love never dies and . . . yeah.
