[Image ID: A Disco Elysium fancomic featuring Harry Du Bois, Cuno, Cunoesse, and Kim Kitsuragi. Panel One: Behind the Whirling-In-Rags, Cuno shouts at Harry: "You got fake FALNs, f[asterisks]t!" Behind him, Cunoesse is laughing. All that can be seen of Harry in this panel is one of his shoes--he is wearing FALN sneakers. Panel Two: Harry looks sadly down at his shoes. Kim is looking off to the side, ignoring what is going on. Text in the panel reads: "ENCYCLOPEDIA – Oh shit. He's right. Authentic FALN "Ultra" Series Sneakers are defined by their--" "REACTION SPEED – No time for that! Think of an *epic clap back!* Panel Three: Harry, with a more thoughtful expression, brings a hand up to his chin and nods. He says: "Hmm true, but in time all shall become dust." Kim gives Harry an exasperated side-eye. Panel Four: Cuno and Cunoesse look at Harry with annoyed/concerned expressions.
A Disco Elysium fancomic split up into two images featuring Harry Du Bois, Cindy the Skull, and Kim Kitsuragi. Panel One: Cindy, with a smug expression, says to Harry: "Your outfit is ugly." Harry has a comically sad expression, and further text in the panel reads: "PAIN THRESHOLD – You're worthless." Panel Two: Harry puts his head in his hands while Kim. blank-faced, gives him two pats on the back. Text in the panel reads: "INLAND EMPIRE – Depression." Panel Three: A repeat of panel one, except Harry is much more confident. Cindy the Skull says: "Your outfit is ugly." Harry responds: "It's camp." Panel Four: Harry points his finger guns and is surrounded by sparkles. Kim looks on with a stoic expression. Text in the panel reads: "VOLITION – No depression!" /end ID]

And what on earth is in that box he's buying? Years of uptight parenting from his parents have left him woefully lacking in knowledge about his newfound interests. Potter's always been rather uncaring of public opinion, perhaps he could be the one to help Draco figure it all out...
ART & FIC
8. as much a light as a flame (6303, Explicit) Summary:
His mother paints a wolf on his chest, its eyes bracketing his heart, and its muzzle pointed towards his groin. His aunt fills in the spaces around his waist and ribs with symbols he's lost the meaning of in the wash of whatever plant had been mixed in with the steam. They move after her brush leaves his skin, turning from incomprehensible marks to his name to wolf to home to hunt and then back to misunderstanding again.
His legs are painted in patterned bands, starting from his ankles and ending at his upper thighs. His groin is left unmarked, the pale and empty skin meant to leave no doubt of the Claim once he makes it.
9. Starkissed (32631, Explicit) Summary:
“Your tattoos!” The intruder says, boldly stepping over Ron’s chaise and crossing in front of Hermione to get to Harry, eyes wide and hungry. Harry immediately sits up, pulling the towel draped across the back of his chair down over his shoulders.   “No! Don’t cover them. They’re beautiful.” Harry hopes an indulgent trip abroad will help shake him out of the doldrums of his life. What he finds once he gets to Venice is more than he ever expected.
  PODFIC
10. Infuse With Affection, Enchant With Love by bafflinghaze (1.5 Hours, Teen and Up) Summary:
It starts with Draco making protective pendants for himself, his parents, and his friends, after the war. Something that would watch their backs—and their fronts—as people spat on them in the streets and hexed them in the alleyways. Draco gets better at it, does a course on it, and takes enough commissions for charmed jewellery that he eventually opens his own shop.
But Harry doesn’t know any of this. So when he sees Malfoy in a shop of charmed necklaces, he immediately tries his best to uncover Malfoy’s machinations.
11. Things Worth Paying For (1.5 Hours, Explicit) Summary:
After leaving post-war Britain for Paris, Draco is finally happy, with friends and a job he loves, But then his newest client turns out to be Harry Potter, and everything changes.
  FIC
12. Three Wishes (10161, Explicit) Summary:
Draco meets his fairy godmother and is granted three wishes. Unfortunately, they all keep coming back to the same thing.
********** Pop!
"Oh, wow," Vince says, and is that sarcasm Draco hears? "I never saw that coming."
"What?" Draco opens his eyes. He's prepared for the theatrics of the puffs of smoke—Vince, despite the sudden career change, was never blessed with an overactive imagination—but what he was not prepared for was the sight of Harry Potter, bare-chested and dressed in arseless chaps, his hands bound and mouth wrapped around a ball gag while lying face down on Draco's sofa.
13. H.A.G.S. (Hogwarts Alliance for Gender and Sexuality) (9517, Explicit) Summary:
When Hermione decides Hogwarts needs a LGBTQIA+ club, of course Ron and Harry are roped into helping. After a rocky start, Harry begins seeing the club as an opportunity to educate students and celebrate diversity and sexuality at Hogwarts. He also starts seeing it as an opportunity to snog Draco Malfoy.
14. You Don't Know Me (Like You Used To) (33106, Explicit) Summary:
"Buy me a drink as compensation for maiming me?" he asks.
"And why the hell would I do that?" It’s a perfectly valid question. A drink invitation from Harry Potter is about as likely of a scenario as me streaking down Piccadilly in broad daylight. Consider me completely thrown off.
Sometimes it only takes a week to change everything. The story of how twenty-five-year-old Draco Malfoy hit one Harry Potter with a door and knocked both of their lives into somewhere entirely new.
15. the best treasure is up Harry’s arse (2891, Explicit) Summary:
Harry and Draco probably had a tumultuous time getting together, filled with angst and denial and pining and brooding. However, this is not that story. Here, Draco makes Harry come (more than once).
16. Breakin' the Rules (3146, Teen and Up) Summary:
Harry and Draco are Auror partners. They're in a relationship that they've been forced to keep secret due to relationships between Aurors being forbidden. Harry is okay with this, as he hasn't come out to anyone other than Draco, but after a mission goes awry, their relationship is exposed.
17. The HogShagMan (31685, Mature) Summary:
Professor Potter is called upon to teach the first-ever official course on Magical Sexual Relations at Hogwarts and, in the process, must navigate the pitfalls of relationship-building, the nefarious schemings of those entrusted with school funding, and the uneven tempers of his boss and several co-workers. Clearly, only ‘the’ Harry Potter can pull it all off.
18. Let's not wait for France (17714, Teen and Up) Summary:
All Harry had wanted from his Eighth year at Hogwarts was a little peace and a little privacy but, from the moment that he stepped onto Platform 9 3/4, it was obvious that nothing was ever going to be that easy.
An accidental bond with Malfoy that resulted in them having to stay together at all times was the final straw.
Things couldn't be worse. So much to a quiet year in Hogwarts.
19. Take All That You See (19666, Teen and Up) Summary:
Draco Malfoy has only two goals for his eighth year are Hogwarts: 1) stay as invisible as possible, and 2) get enough NEWTs to be accepted at a university abroad and get the hell out of the UK. Everything is going according to plan until he is unceremoniously outed by the Daily Prophet and subsequently disowned.
Finding himself the unexpected focus of unwanted attention and harassment, he is suddenly dependent on the good will and protection of the last people he would have expected — Harry Potter and his gang of do-gooder Gryffindors (plus Luna Lovegood). With his world turned upside down, how will Draco make it through the rest of the year? And worse still, as he grows closer and closer to Harry, how will he get out with his heart intact?
20. True Children Still (34240, Explicit) Summary:
After years of dancing around each other, Draco and Harry have finally begun to date, though they're taking things slow. They've got enough to figure out as it is, and the last thing Harry needs is an unexpected introduction to desires he's not quite ready to face.
21. Asking For A Friend? (13734, Explicit) Summary:
Asking for a friend? Don't be shy! I'm Genna Russ with advice! Draco Malfoy, drag queen and agony aunt for the Daily Prophet, is very happy with his life. He loves his job. He loves his drag queen persona. And he loves the fact that the wider Wizarding world doesn't know who is offering them sassy advice with their morning news.
When he starts receiving letters from one Harry Potter – letters that are too racy to publish – he does the only thing he can do: he replies. His carefully constructed secret life is at risk of being blown wide open, but he just can't help himself. Draco never did have any self-control where the Prat Who Lived was concerned.
22. All I Have to Do (9575, Explicit) Summary:
The Patented Daydream Charm (Adult Edition) allows you to enter a top-quality, highly realistic thirty-minute sexual fantasy. Solitude and privacy spells advised.
Or: Draco finally has some alone time; Harry just needs to nip in for a book.
23. Take My Wonder (3949, Explicit) Summary:
Harry Potter is the author of very well-written children's text books. Joshua Starkweather is the author of not-so-well-written erotic fiction. Only one person knows that they are one and the same.
24. (There Is Nothing) More Than This (5431, Explicit) Summary:
Harry Potter returns home past midnight, distressed and anxious about the multiple murder case that he is leading. His husband Draco looks after him, comforting Harry with his hands, his mouth and his unwavering love.
25. the space between (what you want and what you need) (13601, Mature) Summary:
As a specialist Healer in dark magic, Draco has had his fair share of difficult cases and awkward patients. Still, nothing has prepared him for a curse-paralysed Harry Potter.
26. Walk in the sun (18233, Explicit) Summary:
Harry is perfectly content with the life he built for himself; simple and private, it helps him heal the wounds from the war. He then accepts to go out with one of Neville’s acquaintances, never expecting that decision would bring him back to his obsession for Draco Malfoy.
“That was his cue. Had Harry stopped to think about his situation, he could have left. Malfoy was nibbling at his neck, he had his hand down his pants. All things considered, a disaster incoming. And yet, his feet still refused to move. After all, he was not the stop-to-think-of-consequences kind of guy.”
(Features drunken confessions, bathrooms, a lot of smut, sexy pictures, panties, cats and only one bed)
27. You Need to Just Do Whatever You Want (7998, General) Summary:
Draco's confused when he receives a manual explaining his magical inheritance. Being a veela would be good (at least he would be prettier), and a vampire would have been fine (another excuse to hide himself in the Manor). But a descendant of the God of Love, complete with arrows and a love quota? Now that's just bonkers.
A story in which Draco is Cupid (sort of).
28. Under my Skin (8258, Explicit) Summary:
One year after the war and after Hogwarts restorations, Harry is back at school to finally finish his education. He wasn't expecting McGonagall to assign him to protect Draco Malfoy, in case he was bullied during the classes. Although really just wants to relax on his last year in Hogwarts, he'd seen how Draco had changed at the trials. He knew being around him would be easy enough... Wouldn't it?
29. Glory, glory! (16898, Explicit) Summary:
It's 2005 and Harry has recently purchased a new mobile phone so he can easily keep in touch with his friends. Little did he know that the Muggle technology would lead him down a path of self discovery and safe exploration that would lead him into the soft recesses of the last person he ever expected. As it turns out, very good things can be found in the dark.
30. Husbandly Duties (2108, Explicit) Summary:
Draco and Harry leave their wedding after-party early for some quality one-on-one time.
31. Sex, Relationships & Love (3873, Mature) Summary:
Draco Malfoy runs an anonymous sex advice column in the Witch Weekly magazine and gets hundreds of letters asking him for advice on sex, love and relationships. How was he to know that the advice he had given in response to one of those letters would result in Harry Potter showing up at his flat at 6 in the morning?
32. Disparate (6022, Teen and Up) Summary:
Ever since he went to Hogwarts, Draco realized that he wasn't quite the same as the others.
Or: Draco Malfoy over the years as he tries to understand and accept his sexuality.
33. Silver Scales in Pools of Green (26603, Explicit) Summary:
Draco is one of the last sirens of the seas, who escaped to the human world looking for friendship and food, but captivity found him instead. For seven years, he's gotten used to his life as human entertainment, and prides himself in his ability to make humans fall in step to his song.
That is, until everything falls apart when he has an audience with green eyes...
34. It's So Hard (9170, Explicit) Summary:
Draco has posed for some interesting photos, and it is currently making things very... hard for Harry.
35. On Your Shore (35113, Mature) Summary:
Clearing out a remote house full of cursed collectibles in the Outer Hebrides? Not a problem for an experienced curse breaker like Harry Potter. Spending a week with the straight, happily-married man that he’s starting to have feelings for? And sharing a bed with him at night? Surely Harry can handle that, too. But both the house and Draco Malfoy have secrets to uncover, and Harry might be in deeper water than he thought.
36. A Little Less Broken (6417, Mature) Summary:
After the war Draco thought he would never feel again. But a mix of revenge gone wrong and Harry Potter, might help him to feel just a little less broken.
37. Always (20147, Explicit) Summary:
In which Draco is the (in)famous erotica writer H.J. Belladonna, writing successful scandalous novel after successful scandalous novel and hiding his true identity, and Harry is questioning his sexuality after reading one of Belladonna’s books. Until ten years after the war their paths cross again, and Harry doesn’t only question his sexuality, but also the meaning of his obsession with Draco Malfoy.
“You look like something my cat dragged in,“ Blaise said from the sofa. Draco’s sofa, in Draco’s tiny flat. “You don’t have a cat, because you’re too vain, Blaise. A cat would get hair all over your expensive clothes,“ Draco replied and then ignored Blaise in favor of going into the kitchen to get some hot sweet tea into his system. Maybe that would make his day better, even if it had just started and the potential for disaster was high. Blaise followed him. “I’ll take one too.“ “You can’t use my home as your personal hotel, Blaise,“ Draco said, but he was already grabbing two cups out of the cupboard. He was too tired to use magic, after writing the whole night, he felt like all the magic had been absorbed by his parchment. Some of his sanity maybe too.
38. Absurd. (3773, Explicit) Summary:
When Draco discovers a kink that Harry's been hiding from him, he has no choice but to explore said kink, right? Right.
39. For Want Of Five Minutes (And a Locked Door) (4333, Mature) Summary:
It’s hard enough to get five minutes to yourself in a house of five kids, nevermind getting five minutes with your boyfriend for anything else.
40. Let Out the Beast (9649, Explicit) Summary:
In the wizarding world where alphas are looked down upon for their lack of control and unseemly aggression, it is generally accepted that they are not allowed to work in places like schools and hospitals where their nature could risk the people there. When Draco Malfoy suddenly shows up at Hogwarts smelling strongly like an alpha, Harry is beyond baffled. The fact that no one else seems to catch his scent only adds to his confusion. But, of course, the most puzzling part is how Harry’s body reacts to that scent.
41. Flowers, Dildos and Other Courtship Gifts (15853, Teen and Up) Summary:
Harry Potter is the Ministry's star auror trainee, and Draco Malfoy is the cute florist in Diagon Alley who Harry stares at through the window during lunch breaks and leaves. That's all they are and all they would ever be. (Really.) Until Harry accidentally mails Draco an autumn themed dildo (among others). Cue: bad planning, owl kidnapping, and flangst.
Or two emotional gay disasters fall in love in the middle of autumn.
42. he touched me, so I live to know (4729, Mature) Summary:
Five times Harry Potter is unsure about touching someone and one time he isn’t.
43. cut my name into your lip (6321, Explicit) Summary:
Harry can't take it anymore. Seriously. If Malfoy chews on the end of his quill/licks his spoon/sucks on the papercut on his finger one more time, Harry's going to put an end to it.
44. Realities, Unfurling (45487, Mature) Summary:
Draco Malfoy is released from Azkaban into a changed world.
45. The Delicate Balance of Light and Shade (13288, Explicit) Summary:
With the war finally over, Harry tries to find his own path in a world where he is free to make his own choice. On a holiday in France, he unexpectedly falls in love with art and painting. Returning to Hogwarts to help rebuild it, he is paired up with Draco Malfoy to restore the Room of Requirement - and unexpectedly falls in love with Draco. When the rebuilding efforts are done, Harry disappears.
Years later, Draco goes to Muggle London at Pansy's suggestion to visit an art gallery. The name of the Muggle artist is unknown to Draco, but the subject of the erotic paintings is shockingly familiar: it's Draco himself. It's time to confront the past and make some long-due confessions.
46. Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright) (9181, Explicit) Summary:
Sex is hard to come by when you're 40 and have kids.
Or: Five times Harry and Draco tried and failed to have sex and one time they were successful.
47. The Spoiling of Sex From Enthusiastic Ignorance (6079, Explicit) Summary:
Draco is going to lose his virginity, so help him god, and he's going to lose it to one Harry Potter. Why? Because of his big cock, his status as The Top Five Quidditch Players in England, and Witch Weekly's Most-Eligible Bachelor for eight years straight. At least that's what he tells himself. Too bad first times rarely go as one plans, and now Harry is looking miserable and Draco doesn’t understand why.
48. you killed me on the moon (4906, Explicit) Summary:
'You barely know me. We do not know each other.’
‘Beyond this overwhelming need to submit to you, completely and utterly?’ Potter raises his eyebrows, stretching his scar. ‘Beyond this bone-deep awareness that you are made for me, and I for you? That our destiny was written in the stars, in the very foundation of our known world?’
An A/B/O Royalty!AU wherein a desperate Slytherin prince faces a proposal from the conquering Gryffindor king.
49. i just want your extra time and your... (9058, Explicit) Summary:
Ron should know better than to speak Latin in a magical library. If he’d just left well enough alone, instead of trying to badger Malfoy for the details of his newest novel, Harry wouldn’t have to listen to all of this chatter about how bloody decent Malfoy is, and he wouldn’t be dealing with all of these...feelings. Really, it’s all Ron’s fault that Harry’s mind is stuck on Malfoy like this again.
50. The Kisses Don’t Count, If No One Else Knows (41492, Explicit) Summary:
Minister for Magic Harry Potter does not love his job. The one bright point in his life is his secret relationship with Quidditch Super Star Draco Malfoy. When they're 'outed' by a peeping tom with a camera, Harry has to decide what's really important.
51. You Do Your Body Work, I Feel My Pulse Working Overtime (1627, Explicit) Summary:
Harry did not have an addiction to watching Draco masturbate on camera. He could stop any time he wanted to. Really.
52. Right Romantic Setting (6266, Explicit) Summary:
On the twelfth day of their romantic relationship, Draco and Harry take Albus, Scorpius and Rose on a weekend trip to Muggle London that Ron and Hermione were supposed to lead. At the fully-booked hotel where they'll be staying for the night, they're surprised to discover that their rather plain room has only one bed. It's definitely not the right romantic setting for their first night together but, as Draco comes to realise, there's good in taking things slow.
53. Portrait of a Marriage (130627, Mature) Summary:
Harry didn't want to marry Malfoy, he really didn't, but he also does want this house and Malfoy looked so smug and well - now they are married, and the house still doesn't like him, and Malfoy only looks more smug.
Draco didn't want to marry Potter, he really didn't, but he also does want this house and he never seems to be capable of escaping Potter anyway, so if he is already doomed to being married off he might as well decide for himself what he is worth, sign the papers and ignore everything wrong with that plan until physically no longer possible.
54. Regardless of desire, life hands you who you are (29803, Explicit) Summary:
When Draco finds himself wrongly accused – of course it's Potter who swoops in to save the day. Isn't it always Potter?

Snapetober 2020: Day 11 - Scars
There’s more than one type of wound that needs to heal for them to move forward, but Minerva is determined to help however she can. They just have to live with the scars.
The wound pains her even though it is not hers.
Minerva watches as Severus unwraps the bandages around his neck for the final time. She has been watching Poppy unwrap blood-soiled bandages and replace them with fresh ones time and time again, not just on Severus, but on several others, as the days have ticked past.
This time, as the wrappings come undone, there is the barest hint of rust tainting them. The wounds have finally closed. There is a small table beside him, laden with an assortment of potions and a scrap of flannel. She watches as he opens the first bottle, pours the anti inflammatory onto the flannel and attempts to pat the wound.
“Let me help.” she breaks the silence, surprising him out of his reverie. She wonders if he was even aware of her presence. He eyes her hesitantly and she can feel the despair rolling off of him in waves, can see the brokenness in his dark brown eyes.
He nods.
She closes the distance between the two of them and thinks about how this is the first time in over a year that she’s stood so close to him. She takes the flannel and starts to dab at the puncture marks on his neck, wincing in sympathy when he flinches.
“What’s next?” she asks, eyeing the line-up of colorful bottles.
He hands her a bottle she does not recognize, but she trusts him. The thought sends her reeling as she pours a tincture that smells of eucalyptus and witch hazel onto a clean corner of the flannel and repeats the process of gently patting the wound. She trusts him.
And, oh Merlin, does that make her ache.
She studies Severus carefully as she puts her hand out and waits for the next potion. He looks as if he’s shrunken into himself, rumpled and sickly and pale in his grey hospital robe. Exhaustion sits so heavily on his face, she wonders if there is enough rest in the world to help him. His hands are trembling, one more than the other, and she knows it’s permanent. An unfortunate aftereffect of a prolonged Cruciatus; she doesn’t know how long ago that happened, doesn’t know how to ask. He hands her a small pot of healing cream.
With gentle fingers, she rubs the thick paste into his skin until it disappears. He cannot stop himself from hissing in pain and she makes soft noises on a whim. She wants to say something, has wanted to say something since they first found him in the Shrieking Shack barely clinging to life. Ever since her stomach twisted and her heart skipped when Harry was facing Voldemort for the final time.
“Severus Snape was never yours.” Harry had yelled. “He was always Dumbledore’s.” She’s hesitant to admit her head has been a little fuzzy ever since. She wants to say something, but she just doesn’t have the words.
She hated him.
He had betrayed them all, had killed Dumbledore and stood by Voldemort’s side as they seized the castle. She hates herself a little, for never realizing the truth. How long had she and the man in front of her been friends? How many times had she depended on him to help her out, back her up, or just plain be there for her?
“I can hear you thinking.” Severus croaks out and he sounds absolutely wrecked.
“I’m sorry.” Minerva sighs and accepts the strip of bandage dipped in Essence of Dittany. She drapes it over the snakebite and keeps it in place with a temporary sticking charm. He moves his hair back, covering the small square, and looks relieved to be able to do so. “Severus, I -”
“Please, don’t.” he whispers, and even as soft spoken as those two words are, his voice is still dry and gravelly, making him cough. There are two untouched potions left and he picks up the pain reliever, swallowing it back once he’s able to breathe.
The lines of pain fall from his face, but he still looks weak. It will be another few days of bedrest before he can stand on his own again. The venom that coursed through him nearly finished him off, but his body will heal, and so will the wounds on his neck.
Minerva wonders if their relationship is far too broken to fix, or if time will heal that too. She holds nothing against him, knows the truth now and understands. Still, she cannot look at him in the same way anymore, fears they will never be the same.
He reaches for the final potion and Minerva recognizes the orange of the Invigoration Draught. She takes it from him and puts it out of reach. “You should rest, instead. There will be plenty of time to take this later.”
He nods and lays back down, sleep already settling in.
The scars pain her, even though they are not hers.
Minerva watches as Severus wraps a light grey scarf around his neck and tucks the ends into his buttoned up winter coat. The scars are faint, a bubble of light pink that barely sticks out against the paleness of his throat, but she knows they feel larger than life to him.
He still dabs them with Dittany every night, but it hasn’t made a difference in months now. Still, she knows it brings him comfort so she says nothing about it.
They walk the path to Hogsmeade together, their boots crunching over day-old snow and their breaths creating faint wisps of silver in the cold air when they exhale. December has arrived and with it, Christmas is creeping. There are boughs of holly decorating the lamp poles that light up the still-dreaming streets of the small town.
They look at each other and share a look, thinking of how quickly the wizarding town has bounced back from the events in May. It makes something warm burst inside of her. They enter the Three Broomsticks and choose a corner table.
It is still early, especially for a Saturday. They left the students in the care of Flitwick and Pomona, decided they could use a break for the morning. Running a school is a big responsibility, so they do it together now; headmaster and headmistress.
“We should allow the students a Hogsmeade weekend before they go to break.” Minerva brings up, as she flips through the menu Madame Rosmerta has brought. It feels pointless, considering she always orders the same thing.
“Stock them up on sweets and then send them home to their parents?” Severus asks, a faint smile on his lips. “Better them than us.”
Madame Rosmerta returns with mugs full of hot coffee and tea, confirms they want their usual and leaves them alone again. Minerva sips her tea and pretends not to notice when Severus sloshes a bit of coffee as he picks up his cup. His hands still tremble, despite the many nerve regeneration potions he’s taken.
They sit in silence and it still feels a little off. They’ve finally talked about what happened, about the nightmare of the year they both experienced. They finally grieved the loss of Albus together, finally shared what they had been thinking whenever they passed each other in the halls that wretched school year.
They had gotten very drunk off of Lucius’ expensive whiskey (and that was a strange relation that had been formed after Voldemort’s end. She thinks he’s only trying to save what little reputation they have left, by throwing money and expensive gifts at every avenue they can think of. She’s tired of carrying hatred in her heart and so she accepts his gifts, accepts his request to reinstate him onto the Board of Governors, and lets Lucius Malfoy be) and she saw Severus break down in tears for the first time in years.  That alone was her proof that he trusted her still.
She just needed to trust him.
Their friendship has been shaky, as if the foundation has been rebuilt upon uneven ground. Some days she looks at him and all she can feel is hurt, but she reminds herself that isn’t him. He didn’t come back from the brink of death feeling like before; there are scars he’s desperate to hide, but he’s done what he can and now he has to learn to carry on.
Their friendship feels the same way.
They have to learn to carry on, for both of their sakes. Madame Rosmerta returns once more and she sets plates in front of each of them before taking her leave again. Severus pulls out a small vial of potion and she frowns as he drinks the pain reliever.
Healing will take time, in every sense of the word. She wonders if it’s the nerve damage in his neck that’s bothering him today, or if it’s his left arm. She knows he won’t answer in such a public space, despite the near-emptiness of the room, so she doesn’t ask.
She cuts into her poached egg, watches the yolk break and spill over crisp bacon and toasted bread. Their silence feels off, but it’s also as comfortable as it’s ever been. She watches him cut into his own breakfast, smiles faintly at his choice of pancake toppings, and wonders if the scars in their friendship are there to stay, or if they can heal a little more.
Minerva has missed his presence in her life, is glad to have him back, sarcastic comments and sharp tongue and all. Perhaps things will never be as they were. Still, as the honey drips from his lips and he struggles to close his mouth around the comically large bite he’s just taken, something in her lifts.
She cannot help but laugh at him and he scowls at the sound, but his eyes are soft despite his furrowed brow and she knows they will be okay.

dogfather update: realer talk
The penultimate update! Probably.
As always, everything dogfather-related is tagged with the dogfather and story updates are tagged with dogfather story post. If you get antsy waiting for the next update, check out my AO3 or the zines and comics on my Gumroad.
“To Mr. Draco Malfoy, for having the good sense to ask for help when he needed it, I award ten points,” Dumbledore begins, nodding vaguely in the direction of not blatantly favoring Gryffindor in all things. He promptly gives up the pretense, and drags Gryffindor up from dead last to a first-place tie on the flimsiest of excuses.
Throughout all this, Severus is forced to sit at the high table and maintain a calm demeanor, while the Headmaster upends the point totals with total disregard for fairness or tradition. He is, therefore, in a foul mood by the end of the leaving feast, fleeing the Great Hall and its clashing decorations of red, gold, silver and green as soon as he can manage a decorous exit.
On his way to the dungeons, he has a brief but wildly unpleasant run-in with Black (who is at least dog-shaped for the duration), Lupin, Hagrid, and a pair of Muggles. They ought not be anywhere near Hogwarts at all, let alone be introduced to him with careful politeness, or shake his hand, or thank him for helping to look after their son with entirely too much heartfelt sincerity. By the time Severus manages to extract himself from the pleasantries, he’s sure Lupin is laughing at him from behind his mild expression.
Severus keeps to himself for the last few days of term, rarely venturing far from his rooms or office. He’s rewarded with blessedly little interaction with his students or colleagues. Having received their exam results, the children are too busy celebrating their mediocre achievements to notice the absence of a teacher. As for the adults, he supposes that planning for the reemergence of the Dark Lord is a higher priority than their usual time-wasting efforts at pretending to enjoy his company.
It can’t last, of course. The evening before the students depart, there is a knock at Severus’ door.
Sirius Black is standing in the corridor.
“What do you want,” says Severus. Black looks like he’d rather be absolutely anywhere else, and Severus doesn’t like the twinge of fellow-feeling this inspires.
“I need -- can I talk to you, for a moment?” Black asks. He adds, with apparent difficulty, “Please.”
It’s not as though he’d leave if Severus said “no.” He turns away from the door, leaving it open, and after a moment Black follows him in. Severus sits, and regards the stack of potions journals that had been his original plan for the evening a trifle wistfully.
“Well?” Severus says.
There’s a reason Severus only has one armchair in his private sitting-room, but Black just conjures another and flings himself down into it. “Right,” he says. “Look. I wanted to thank you.”
Severus freezes.
Black is staring down at his hands, and doesn’t notice. “I wasn’t here,” he says. “I wasn’t here, and Harry was in danger. You listened to Draco and you sent for the Headmaster, and if you hadn’t Harry might have died.”
Severus also accompanied Albus down through the trap-maze, and helped him to separate Quirrell from the boy, and carried him back up to the infirmary while Albus tried and failed to save what was left of their former colleague. Unconscious, the boy looked even more like his father than he did awake. But more than even that, he looked horrifically young.
In the days since, Severus found himself revisiting the memories of his benighted childhood with adult eyes. Without the vivid sting of rage and humiliation they carried at the time, everyone looks just as young. As unformed and foolish as his current students, who even now are preparing to leave the castle for a summer of poor decisions and minimal revising.
He can’t say he likes it any better.
Not that he would say as much, and certainly not to Black. “Very well,” he says, as levelly as he can. “Is that all? Your gratitude is very touching, I’m sure.”
“Hah,” says Black, perfectly toneless. “I expect you want my gratitude -- oh, about as much as the invitation to dinner with Harry’s parents I’m meant to pass on.”
Severus genuinely isn’t sure which of those he wants less.
Black reads it off his face, of course. “Yeah. I’ll tell them you politely declined.”
“You needn’t do me any favors,” says Severus.
This time, the sound Black makes is very nearly a real laugh. “I think I’d better, actually.” He stops staring at his hands, and looks up at Severus.
In Severus’ memories, Black never looks at him without some mixture of scorn, contempt, and incipient devilry. This -- is not that.
“Look,” Black says. “The Ministry’s finally remembered that they lost track of Harry once, and got his aunt and uncle killed. They didn’t bother doing anything to protect Tim and Caro while he was at Hogwarts, of course, but now that he’s going home they’ve decided to give a damn about his safety. So Remus and I can’t stay close, the way we ought to.”
Severus fails to see how this is his concern, and says so.
“We’re going after Pettigrew,” Black says. “Properly, this time, not stealing away for a day or two to follow a lead. If I can’t be Harry’s last line of defense, I’m damn well going to go out and find the biggest threat to his safety.”
“Wouldn’t that be the Dark Lord?” Severus asks.
“Dumbledore says he’s not strong enough, without followers,” says Black. “That if he’s just a scrap of disembodied spirit, he can’t hurt Harry.”
“Dumbledore has been wrong before,” says Severus.
“Which is why I’m asking you this,” says Black. “If we can’t finish it before Harry comes back to Hogwarts, I want to know you’re looking out for his safety.”
Ah. There it is. Black does want something from him, though Severus can’t imagine why it’s this, in particular.
“Why ask that of me, of all people?” Severus says. “Your godson thought I was the one after the Stone.”
“His friends did,” says Black, “and he panicked when I wasn’t there and they were sure it was you and not Quirrell. But you’ve been ignoring him all year, when I know damn well you look at him and see James standing there instead. Anyway. Dumbledore trusts you.”
Too close to the mark, on that shot about Potter. If it were Lupin, Severus might not be quite as surprised by that sort of insight, but from Black it feels unprecedented. Perhaps spending all that time as a dog has, somehow, rendered him less self-centered.
“And that’s all the recommendation you need?”
“No,” says Black. “Look. I know you and Lily cared about each other, once.”
Severus says nothing; there is nothing to say to that.
Black carries on talking. He does still love the sound of his own voice, it seems, so not everything has changed.
“It was my idea to switch Secret-Keepers at the last minute, you know. If I hadn’t been so impressed with my own cleverness, James and Lily might still be alive.” He looks up at Severus again, clear and level, nothing in it but but excruciating sincerity. “Do you really think I don’t know what guilt looks like?”
That is beyond the pale, entirely. Severus springs to his feet. “I have work to do,” he says, and immediately regrets it: he does not need to make excuses for himself. He has every right to order Black out if he wants to, which he very much does.
But Black is already retreating. “Sorry,” he says. “I’m sorry. It’s none of of my business.”
“I don’t need platitudes,” Severus spits out. Black has him off-balance, and scrambling for firmer ground. He dislikes it immensely. “Just because you think you’ve learned to act contrite -- I suppose Lupin’s managed to house-train you a bit over the years -- ”
Black’s expression hardens for the first time, a little of the old familiar anger appearing. “Leave him out of this,” he says. “Hate me all you like, but he never did anything to you.”
“I can think of one time he did,” says Severus. “Rather memorably.”
But the outburst Severus expects doesn’t come. Instead Black heaves a sigh, and the anger drains away. “Oh, all right,” he says. “We’re having this out, are we?”
“Oh, by all means,” says Severus. He feels foolish, standing there, and turns away to pace; at least if he’s moving he has an excuse to look at anything but Black. “Do you have a speech prepared? You will excuse me for my lack of counter-remarks, I hope.”
Rather than rise to the bait, Black very nearly smiles. “I do, I’m afraid,” he says. “Or something like one.”
“Plenty of time to rehearse in Azkaban, I suppose,” Severus says.
“Oh, no,” says Black. “That’s not a place you can string a sentence together, much less remember it later. I already had most of it before then, though, and worked the rest out after.”
“Well?” says Severus. “It had better be good, in that case, with so much practice.”
There’s that sincere look again. Severus dislikes it heartily. “I was selfish, at fifteen,” Black says. “Selfish and short-sighted and impulsive. I very nearly hurt you and Remus both, very badly, and I’ve regretted it since about ten minutes after I did it. But you know all of that.”
“Well before you ever did, I expect,” says Severus.
“Probably, yeah,” says Black. “So I’m sorry for it, and I’ve tried to be better than I was. You’re welcome to hate me, though, as long as you leave Remus and Harry out of it.”
This implies that Severus is also welcome to hate Potter. It’s intriguing, in a way, although it’s not as though he needs anyone’s permission to hate James Potter. Least of all Sirius Black’s.
Black never had any talent for Legilimency that Snape can recall, which makes it all the more disconcerting when he says, “And if you’ve got to hate James, go ahead; it can’t hurt him. But Harry isn’t James. You’ll need to remember that, if you’re willing to help protect him, because he’s not going to do the things that James would do.”
Severus has yet to see much evidence of that. But it’s true that he hasn’t been looking.
“Fine,” he says. “It’s not as though I would let any of my students wander into harm’s way, if I could help it. You needn’t have come begging a favor. Oughtn’t you Gryffindors have a bit more dignity than this, anyway?”
That attempt at a blow slides off, too. Black used to be much thinner-skinned, Severus is sure.
“I made James and Lily a promise, when they made me Harry’s godfather,” Black says. “It’s my job to keep him safe. It doesn’t matter if I have to do things I don’t like.”
He adds, as if it doesn’t cost him anything to say it, “I spent my first year with the MacIntyres pretending to be a dog. It’s a bit late to put my dignity ahead of Harry’s safety, don’t you think?”
Severus gives up. If nothing else, Black has apparently learned to hold his temper, and Severus is hardly going to let Black goad him into an outburst of his own.
“Oh, fine,” he says. “Very well. Consider it done.” He sits back down. There follows a long and very uncomfortable silence.
Severus isn’t fifteen anymore, either. He can manage a peace offering, even for the likes of Black.
Severus pulls a journal out of his stack and offers it to Black. “Damocles Belby thinks he’s close to perfecting his formula,” he says. “I expect he’ll have it within the year, if these results are accurate.”
Black takes it cautiously, as if it might bite. “He’s been saying that for well over a decade. You really think so?”
“Yes,” says Severus, and waits for the snide remark about his presumption of expertise.
It doesn’t come. Black flips to the relevant article, brow furrowed. “I’ve had to talk Remus out of joining the patient trials half a dozen times,” he says. “Told him to wait until they’d ironed out the side effects.”
“That… may have been for the best,” Severus admits. There were several fatalities in the early trials, he’s heard, though the details went unpublished.
“I hope so,” Black says. “A year, though. That’s something.”
Silence falls again, as Black puzzles over the article. It’s not anything you could call companionable, but the lack of overt hostility, in itself, is notable.
“You know, Lily was going to do an apprenticeship with him,” Black says. “Belby, I mean. After the war.”
Severus does know. He hadn’t realized anyone else did. He would rather face a phalanx of Death Eaters, wandless, than talk about it.
Mercifully, Black doesn’t press the issue. “I’d better go,” he says. “Thank you, Severus. I’ll owe you for this.”
He doesn’t even appear to be gritting his teeth as he says it. It’s fascinating, and a bit eerie. For a moment Severus suspects Polyjuice.
But Black changes into his Animagus form, which rules that out.
Before he can leave, though, Severus has a thought. “Wait.”
Black changes form again, and looks surprised once his shape settles back to human. “Yes?”
“Draco Malfoy sent for you, when he needed help,” Severus says. “If possible, you ought to encourage that tendency.”
“Offer him a sympathetic ear?” Black says.
“Certainly not. His parents already do that, and encourage all his worst impulses,” says Severus. “But the elder Malfoy is highly placed among the surviving Death Eaters. There may be some strategic value in offering his son an alternative path.”
Lucius has been one of Severus’ oldest and most loyal friends, in his way. He won’t be grateful if his son is turned against him. But it would be fitting, perhaps, if Severus has a hand in ensuring that Draco grows to be a better man than his father.
Given Black’s own family history, it’s not surprising that he seems to understand. “I’d be happy to,” he says.
“Very well,” says Severus. There. A favor for a favor, and nothing owed in any direction. He dislikes loose ends at the best of times, which this decidedly isn’t.
On his way out the door, Black says, “Oh, and by the way — thank you for giving Harry those photos. I won’t ask how you got them; I’m sure I don’t want to know.”
He leaves without waiting for a reply.
Severus remains ill at ease long after Black is gone. He feels better after Banishing the extra armchair, if only a very little.
But the students are leaving in the morning. He can regain his equilibrium far more easily in an empty castle, he’s sure. And Black won’t be coming back in the fall, in all likelihood. The thought is cheering.
Severus settles back into his reading, and doesn’t think of anything but potionmaking techniques and ingredient comparisons for the rest of the night. Anyone trying to prove otherwise would be unlikely to survive the Occlumentic backlash.

“It’s been a gentle start to the day,” Harry Lloyd says with a smile, speaking at a subdued volume while his six-month-old baby naps in the other room. We’re chatting on a Saturday afternoon, and Lloyd’s tousled hair is silhouetted against the sunlight streaming through the hotel room windows. It’s a warm day in Los Angeles, a stark contrast to the subzero chill that he braved for last month’s photo shoot in New York.
On screen, the English actor’s piercing gaze bespeaks a calculating persona, an agenda beneath the charm. Offscreen, there’s an unguarded, guileless ease to Lloyd’s manner—he’s thoughtful and genuinely engaged in the questions posed to him.
Lloyd is perhaps best-known for his portrayal of the unscrupulous, throne-obsessed Viserys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Since his character’s macabre demise, the 35-year-old has been plenty busy. Among other screen and stage projects, Lloyd played the classmate and confidante to Eddie Redmayne’s Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything; a brilliant (and womanizing) novelist in The Wife (Lloyd mentions that he’s thrilled for Glenn Close’s Oscar nomination); and an intelligence officer, opposite J.K. Simmons, in the Starz original series Counterpart. His latest undertaking—the reason he’s in LA—is the Marvel comics-based series, Legion. For the third and final season of the FX show, Lloyd will play the role of David Haller’s father and X-Men leader, Professor Charles Xavier. (In so doing, he joins the ranks of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, who portrayed Professor X in the film series.)
Our conversation starts with Counterpart, the sci-fi/espionage thriller. A Cold War experiment in East Germany has splintered the timeline, and two formerly identical worlds now exist in an uneasy and rapidly unraveling détente. Each character in the show has an “other” self—a counterpart on the other side—and crossovers between the two dimensions wreak geopolitical havoc. There are slick diplomats, hapless bureaucrats, a contract assassin—and at the center is Peter Quayle, the director of Strategy in the Office of Interchange, a sort of United Nations-meets-MI6 outfit.
The morally obtuse Quayle is not exactly a sympathetic figure, but Lloyd embodies the character with a subtlety that allows the vulnerability to seep through the cracks in the bravado. As Quayle’s carefully-calibrated life crumbles, you feel for him—a national security strategist who’s in way over his head, blind to the fact that his own wife is a mole. Those pale, elegant hands are not meant to be dirtied fumbling about dim halls and holding rooms—and that’s not even getting into the subplots within the plot twists.
Lloyd’s enthusiasm for the project is clear. He calls Counterpart one of the favorite things he’s ever worked on, and credits Justin Marks, the creator of the show: “The writing is excellent, which attracts really good actors.” Among the sterling cast is, of course, J.K. Simmons, who plays two Howard Silks—the placid paper-pusher, Howard “Alpha,” in dimension one; and the cocksure clandestine operative, Howard “Prime,” in dimension two.
“I was very scared of him originally,” Lloyd admits with a laugh when I ask about his experience working with Simmons, who garnered an Oscar for his portrayal of a ruthless music instructor in Whiplash. “But he [Simmons] has been so welcoming and makes you feel at ease. I’ve learned so much from him—and we have a lot of fun.”
The scenes with Quayle Alpha and Howard Prime are often tense, even claustrophobic, not just because they take place in dark cars and cramped rooms, but because we sense the stranglehold of identity—the underlying question of just how much of one’s self is the product of choice versus circumstance. If you put John le Carré and Jorge Luis Borges in the same room, they might come up with something like this—forking paths that diverge and converge, labyrinths of spies and alter egos.
Lloyd describes Quayle Alpha and Howard Prime as an “unhappy couple, both caught in this lie, who must rely on each other even though neither likes or respects the other.” On the flip side, Lloyd continues, “Quayle Prime and Howard Alpha have a completely different relationship” such that playing his character’s “other” feels “like a completely different job.”
There’s a cerebral, granular detail to Lloyd’s musings when I ask about the characters, fictional or real, that he draws from in portraying the two Quayles.
He explains that while on break between filming the Berlin and LA portions of season two, he and Justin Marks discussed the aesthetics of Alien 3. Marks envisioned Echo, the interrogation facility in dimension two, as a “penal colony, rather than a hospital or prison. The relationships between the inmates and officers draw on that” psychological dynamic.
In conveying Quayle’s “slightly unhinged” persona, Lloyd takes cues from other classics: Billy Bibbit from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a “somewhat childish figure who looks up to McMurphy,” and Dennis Hopper’s character in Apocalypse Now, who harbors a manic obsession with Marlon Brando’s Kurtz. Lloyd incorporates elements of these characters in Quayle Prime’s dynamic with Yanek, a warden at Echo—there’s an “evangelical fervor, where you sense [the character’s] loss of contact with reality.”
Season two of the show delves deeper into the deceit, paranoia, and existential quandaries inherent in navigating and manipulating two worlds. (It seems no coincidence that the writers chose Alexander Pope as the name of the character who trains sleeper agents—a little learning is a dangerous thing.) I ask Lloyd about the techniques he uses to keep his Alpha and Prime personas from getting jumbled.
“In terms of playing two parts for the first time, I’m lucky in that Quayle Prime exists solely in the Echo location, so we were able to do all that filming in a couple of weeks over the summer,” Lloyd tells me. “This season, we started filming in Berlin and ended in LA, so having a new location, new set,” helped keep the two characters separate.
Lloyd can’t discuss more details from season two without risking plot spoilers, so we pivot to other projects. I mention the internet speculation over whether Viserys Targaryen makes a comeback in the next season of Game of Thrones. “Really?” Lloyd replies with a mix of curiosity and incredulity. “That death seemed pretty final to me—I’m not sure how he comes back from that.”
I explain that the Reddit murmurings refer more to flashback scenes, and then ask Lloyd about filming his character’s grisly exit.
“That was pretty much the last scene I filmed on that show, and I remember that day very well,” Lloyd says—the amusement is pronounced in his voice. “It was freezing cold. We shot quite early in the morning, and I had to act drunk. Doing that so early in the day can go horribly wrong,” he explains, as you don’t want to overact it. But with a death scene like that, where the would-be king is “crowned” as molten gold is poured over his head, Lloyd could really let loose with the screaming—a finale that’s seared into fans’ minds.
Lloyd draws out nuances in his characters through deep-dives into their back stories. When filming the Game of Thrones pilot, he kept George R.R. Martin’s books under his chair for ease of consultation. As the filming continued, though, Lloyd wanted to get beyond Daenerys Targaryen’s narration of Viserys as the “brute—the petulant, unkind older brother.”
In Lloyd’s view, that perspective discounts the whole of Targaryen history: “This character feels the weight of his family on his shoulders. He’s had a terrible childhood; his parents are dead. He has no family apart from a little sister who doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. He carries these scars, and by re-writing the narrative as the ‘Chronicles of Viserys Targaryen,’ we start to see how Viserys justifies his cruelty.”
Lloyd pauses briefly, mulling over this re-framing: “That’s the job of an actor—to give your character a mouthpiece” and guide the audience as to where our sympathies should lie.
“It’s a great time to be an actor,” Lloyd continues. “I’m lucky to be working with people I’ve admired for years, and to arrange projects [in a way that allows me] to explore different avenues. I hope it stays like this—there are so many more stories to tell.”
Our conversation drifts to more meta territory—how technological evolution continues to reshape the way we consume and relate to art and storytelling. Lloyd is democratic in his engagement with cultural mediums—he enjoys audio books and made-for-radio plays, and he’s fascinated by the future of VR. He loves the stage and recently played the lead role in The Good Canary, John Malkovich’s London directorial debut. Lloyd has also been on the other side of the camera, writing and directing “Supreme Tweeter.” The short web series, made in 2015, is premised on a cheeky concept that came to his co-creator (and now wife), Jayne Hong, in a dream: What if North Korea’s Kim Jong-un suddenly follows you on Twitter—what absurdity might ensue and what are the implications of treating your identity as a commodity, a “brand”? (I point out that this satirical take on social media as propaganda was an eerily prescient concept, given our current Tweeter-in-Chief—a topic that Lloyd diplomatically sidesteps.)
With streaming services supplanting cable and the proliferation of social media content, it’s a challenge, says Lloyd, “to hold erratic attention spans for more than a moment.” Among the tech-driven transformations that he references is how long-form television shows like Counterpart, with intricate plot lines and character arcs, are replacing the novel as a way of enjoying long-form stories. He also observes that interactive video games are looking more like films, with complex narratives and attention to visual detail and cinematic soundtracks, and vice versa—there are online films that contain a choose-your-own-adventure component with multiple plot lines. These various forms of entertainment may all be converging, Lloyd hypothesizes, as “new audiences have a desperate thirst for full immersion.”
For all these innovations, though, Lloyd jokingly refers to himself as a “fuddy-duddy” who loves to read books and has a record player back home in London. That doesn’t rule out throwback video games, though—for Christmas, Marks gave him a miniature version of the original Nintendo system, preloaded with all the old NES games. His favorite? “Super Mario 3, where Mario gets to wear the raccoon tail.” And continuing the theme of constant evolution, Lloyd points out that players now design new levels for these old games, which everyone can then upload to their own handheld consoles.
For now, though, there’s not much by way of free time. Lloyd is a new dad, and it’s entirely endearing how his tone and manner warm to the point of giddiness when discussing fatherhood. “Long story short, it’s phenomenal, beyond description,” he says. “There’s definitely a lot to learn,” but he’s enjoying the daily agenda, which includes “a lot of singing and chatting and mimicry” with the baby—spending time “staring at each other, making each other laugh, communicating in this pre-language way, just getting to know each other.”
As for audiences just getting to know Lloyd, the depth and versatility he brings to screen and stage promise many more dimensions beyond Quayle’s Alpha and Prime selves to be explored. Lloyd doesn’t rule out anything when it comes to collaborations and characters—as he puts it, “the more you give, the more you get out of the experience.” And more of Harry Lloyd is a very good thing.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for American Horror Story season 10, episode 3
Season 10 of American Horror Story was originally much more over-the-top according to Adina Porter, one of the show’s stars. American Horror Story premiered in 2011 and was created by prolific Hollywood producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, who together also created Glee, Pose, and many other popular shows. American Horror Story, which airs on FX, has remained a hit with audiences over the years and has already been renewed through season 13. Each season of AHS acts as its own miniseries, telling a self-contained story. Many actors, most notably Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Lily Rabe, have appeared in many of the seasons playing different characters.
Porter is another actor who has appeared in multiple seasons of AHS. Season 10, AHS: Double Feature, marks her fifth outing on the show. In Red Tide, the first of two stories that will be told this season, Porter plays Chief Burleson, the new head of the police department in Cape Cod’s Provincetown, a creepy locale plagued by a sinister drug problem with unexpectedly bloodthirsty roots. So far, season 10 has maintained a somewhat serious tone, which came as a surprise to many viewers who were used to the sillier quality of previous seasons.
Related: American Horror Story Perfectly Reverses Macauley Culkin’s Home Alone Role
Speaking to TheWrap, Porter revealed that American Horror Story: Red Tide underwent some noticeable changes between when the episodes were filmed and when they aired. She says season 10 was originally “a little bit more over the top, line-wise and character-wise” than what viewers ended up seeing onscreen. Read her comments below:
“There’s what I’ve read in the original script that was given to me. And then there was what I performed. And then the editor created things. And I was surprised at what has made the show and what hasn’t made the show.
I think, you know, there’s that amazing expression from Hamlet, ‘the play’s the thing.’ And when we were filming it, there was a lot more — a little bit more over the top, line-wise and character-wise than what’s in the finished product. And as an actor, I saw it and I went, ‘Oh, OK.’ They filmed like the raw materials. And then they kind of put things together to see, which was the best way they wanted to make this particular dish this year.”
Tumblr media
Porter’s character met an untimely end at the hands of young violin prodigy Alma (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), daughter of Harry (Finn Wittrock) and Doris (Lily Rabe), but that doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t pop back up in future episodes this season. Porter understandably didn’t give anything away about what might happen going forward but did say “anything is definitely possible” in the world of American Horror Story.
It’s not unusual for big changes to occur between script and screen. A common saying in filmmaking, usually attributed to French director Robert Bresson, is that a movie is made three times: once when it’s written, once when it’s filmed, and once when it’s edited. Many factors could have contributed to why Murphy and Falchuck decided to tone down the “over the top” nature of Red Tide. Perhaps it had something to do with Death Valley, the second part of AHS: Double Feature – if the creators wanted the two stories either to match tonally or to be extremely different, it could make sense that Red Tide was tweaked in editing. It’s also possible that the story just worked better this way. One thing viewers can count on is that with American Horror Story, the fans – and, it seems, the actors – never know what to expect.

Sarah and Jasmine
Twirling a single strand of long brown hair around my finger, I looked down at the glossy pages of the math textbook before me and dropped my head down onto it with a groan.           Math sucked.           “Sarah?” Mum called out from the living room. “Are you working?”           Ugh.           “Yeah, yeah!” I answered, voice muffled, before I took a deep breath and lifted my head again.          I was sitting at my desk, the newest addition to my room, which my Dad had brought me to celebrate his baby girl becoming a high-schooler, and then struggled and swore while putting together. I was torn on my desk. On the one hand, it was beautiful; white, with drawers and shelves and a large computer monitor, which was currently turned off and was to stay turned off until I finished my math problems, lest I face the dreaded Wrath of Mum. On the other hand, it represented something upsetting. I had not gone through any wardrobes when I was 8, had not received a letter when I was 11, and had not gone to Camp Half-Blood by the time I was 12. Now I was 13, and starting high-school, and sometimes it got so frustrating I could scream – where was my magic, my adventure, my fairy tale? What did I have to do to be chosen?           Probably not fail math.           In one of the little sections on my desk, I had a Superman action figure, and I turned to him for help.          “Did you ever have problems with math when you were 13?” I whispered to him. Superman said nothing, frozen in plastic glory. I sighed and turned back to the textbook. The Superman figure wasn’t my only one – I had Batman and Wonder Woman, Naruto and Sailor Moon, the Doctor and Harry Potter and a whole lot more. They were scattered around my room and posters and paintings decorated my walls, each based on a fictional character or movie or book series or anime. I also had two big bookshelves, one stocked with books, one with comics – and despite that, I had books and comics piled up on chairs and tables and bedside drawers. Some were even stacked on the floor. Mum despaired of ever getting my room clean, but I liked it. I didn’t need it clean or organised, I knew where everything was.           Letting out a deep sigh, I glanced back down at the cursed textbook. This wasn’t working. My mind kept wandering, I kept looking out the window and chewing on my pencil and drifting off in thought and fantasies…I needed motivation.           Eyes lighting up, I pulled the end of my pencil from my mouth as it spread into a grin. Yes, motivation! I would finish at least half the problems by – I checked the clock on the wall – well, let’s say 20 minutes from now, and when I did I would go to the store and grab a pack of cookies!           Dismissing the thought of ‘what about the other half of the problems?’, I bent down and started seriously working on trying to unravel the mystery numbers before me – after all, the teacher always said that it’s better to get the answer wrong than not answer at all!
An hour or so later, I was heading home from the market. I grinned happily while gleefully tearing open the packet of cookies, and promptly stuffed one in my mouth. Humming to myself, I closed my eyes, chewed, and savoured the chocolatey goodness, decidedly ignoring any possibility of my cheeks having puffed out like a chipmunk’s. There was no point in eating cookies if you were going to nibble on them like a squirrel. Who cares if you look silly while doing it?           There was a clatter as my shoe hit something, the sound making me blink my eyes open and look around, attention quickly being drawn to the small spinning form of a white stone. I must have kicked it. Shrugging, I kept walking for a moment, before something, some odd impulse made me pause, quickly pick up the stone, and drop it into a pocket. It was a nice stone, and I might clean it up and put it on my desk…or I might forget all about it.           Eh.           ‘ow.’          Swallowing my mouthful of cookie, I stopped for a moment. I could have sworn I’d heard something, as I passed by that alley. A bit nervous, I looked around.           There didn’t seem to be anyone – or anything – in the alley, apart from some bins down the back. It was lined with clean, grey cobblestones and had faded advertisements, layers of them, papered over one wall. If you peeled off one layer you’d just get more, older, advertisements, and I wondered idly how far down you could go while edging into the alley, ready to run should a crazed axe murderer or rabid animal spring out of the non-existent shadows.          The warm afternoon sunlight was the only reason I was even that brave. It is very hard to be scared in daylight when there are no shadows to hide possible dangers.           ‘Hello?’ I called out, only to be greeted with silence.           Shrugging, I started to head out of the alley, figuring it had only been my imagination, when suddenly there was a clatter behind the bins at the end of the alleyway.          ‘Fermented goats milk!’ someone, hidden behind the bins, swore – at least, I assumed it was a swear based on their tone.           ‘Do you need help?’ I asked, hesitation forgotten as I ventured further in.           ‘No!’ The stranger behind the bins replied, voice tight with pain. ‘I’m fine, go away!’          Ignoring this, I rounded the bins and crouched down next to the stranger, who I could see was a pretty girl with long dark hair and dark brown eyes, golden skin and full lips and a slightly downturned nose, cradling a very obviously broken arm to her chest.           I swallowed down some nausea at the sight of the break.           ‘You don’t look fine.’ I said.          ‘You’re not the best looking yourself.’ She spat out through gritted teeth, and I tried not to let on that she’d hit a sore spot. I knew I wasn’t pretty, with plain, straight brown hair and pale freckled skin and crooked teeth. Some of the girls at school were more then eager to let me know how ugly I was at any time, so I didn’t need it from this stranger when I was only trying to help – but I remembered how snippy I’d been when I’d tripped and bumped my elbow, and magnanimously decided to ignore her obviously pain-related lashing out.           ‘Do you want me to call an ambulance?’           ‘No!’           I rocked back on my heels at her vehemence.                       ‘No hospitals!’ she demanded strenuously, glaring at me with flushed cheeks.          I glared back. ‘In case you haven’t noticed, you have a broken arm – a really bad one too. It’s not something you can just walk off!’           ‘I’ll be fine.’ she repeated. ‘Go away!’           Gritting my teeth, I settled down cross legged in front of her and crossed my arms as well as I matched her glare for glare. ‘No.’           For a moment we stayed like that, frozen, me sitting on the dirty ground, her huddled in the corner against the wall, looking each other straight in the eye – before the tension broke, and she sighed explosively.           ‘I can’t go to the hospital.’ she said, face white and strained. ‘and I can’t tell you why.’          I nodded seriously, excitement bubbling up in the pit of my stomach. This was it, I knew suddenly – my call to adventure, my Hogwarts letter. I’d been wanting it, hadn’t I? and here it was, in the form of this strange girl with her broken arm. I beamed at her helplessly, and offered her a cookie. She looked at it cautiously.          ‘It’s chocolate chip! Chocolate is good for you.’ I informed her, ignoring her raised eyebrow. ‘It’s because it has endorphins.’ I had found that out a while ago, and promptly adopted it as gospel, and pulled it out whenever I needed to make a point about the glory that was chocolate. As for her refusal to go to the hospital…           ‘You can come to my house.’ I said impulsively. ‘We’ll splint your arm there – somehow, I don’t know, we’ll check a YouTube video or something, or google it.’           I’d have to sneak her past my parents…          Plans were racing through my head now like lightning, only to be derailed as the girl – whose name I really needed to get – sighed in frustration.           ‘Fine.’ she said flatly. ‘We’ll go to your house – picture it.’          Huh? A bit baffled, I did as she asked, picturing our house – two stories, with a wooden door and a large garden out the front, the windows, the red bricks and white fence and terracotta tiles of the roof…           The girl reached out with her good arm and grabbed my hand, and there was a sudden moment of disorientation, like taking a step and suddenly finding air where you’d thought ground would be, a sickening lurch – and then there was a soft, muted Pop! of sound as air was displaced, and we were standing in front of my house instead of the alleyway.           I looked at her, wide eyed for a moment, before beaming even brighter and barely resisting the urge to pull her into a hug. She seemed baffled at my reaction.                       ‘You’re magic!’ I whispered, bouncing up and down on my feet, effervescent delight floating through me like golden bubbles. I was smiling so hard my face was starting to hurt. ‘Real magic!’ I grasped her good hand in both of mine. ‘Oh, I’m so glad I found you!’           Finally!
Sneaking the girl up to my room wasn’t difficult. Resisting the urge to pester her with questions until we were safely there was, so it was probably no surprise that the moment we were behind my bedroom door, I pounced.           ‘You have magic!’ I squealed, gesturing for her to sit on my bed. It was the centrepiece of my room, a four poster, canopied princess dream, decked out in pink and frills and dozens of pillows and stuffed animals. I loved it.          Judging by the look on her face, she didn’t, as she gingerly sat down on the edge, trying to avoid touching anything.           ‘That is an oversimplification,’ the girl said, her voice rich and accented and regal as she drew herself up – before subsiding with a wince, and I was abruptly reminded of why I’d brought her home in the first place.           ‘If you have magic, can’t you just fix your arm?’ I waggled my fingers at her as I said fix. She sniffed haughtily.          ‘No,’ she said shortly, before elaborating with a sigh when I continued to eye her expectantly. ‘I cannot use my power on myself.’                       That didn’t make much sense. ‘But when you apparated us –’           ‘- teleported.’           ‘When you teleported us, you came too.’           ‘It’s different. I cannot use my power to help myself, though I can still be affected by it.’           Well, that sucked.          I hurried over and sat next to her on the bed. ‘So what else can you do?’ I should probably be researching how to set a broken arm, but I was too curious to focus right now, feeling like my bones were vibrating in my skin. If I sat down at the computer, I’d be shaky and distracted and itchy until I knew more. I leaned in eagerly, hands clenched in my lap to stop me from reaching out and touching the girl – whose name, I realised with a sudden lurch, I still didn’t know.          She shrugged, one shoulder going up and down with a disinterested look on her face. She clearly did not find this discussion as entrancing as I did. ‘Normally? Pretty much anything, if the…circumstances… are right. Right now? Not much. The teleport to your house took most of my reserves.’           ‘What does that mean?’ I wanted to know everything.          The girl sighed, seemed to have realised that I was not going away or going to stop asking questions, and apparently decided to humour my curiosity.           ‘I am in this situation because I was attacked and separated from my lamp. Without my lamp, I cannot recharge my energy – what I have is what I am stuck with.’                   Lamp? I sucked in a deep breath, looking her over again, realisation hitting me like lightning. ‘You’re a Genie!’           ‘Djinn!’ she snapped, suddenly glaring at me. Judging from her insulted reaction, I guessed calling a Djinn a Genie was not good and smiled apologetically at her as I made a mental note in my lexicon. Djinn. Never Genie.           The girl nodded briskly, seeming to accept my apology, and continued. ‘I am a Djinn – a being from the plane of air and flame. I am older than this country – I am older than this continent. When I am at my full power, I can rewrite the stars, change time, even bring back the dead – I have been worshipped by you humans! I am a being of such grandeur and magnificence that were you to see me in my true form, your eyes would melt!’ She sat straighter on my bed, surrounded by lace and frills, eyes burning and cheeks flushed as she finished her dramatic pronouncement with a flourish of her good arm.           ‘Cool.’ I said.          There was a long moment where she stared at me, eyes wide, before slumping and covering her face with her hand. ‘Cool,’ she muttered.           I nodded in response. ‘Very cool. So, what’s your name anyway? I’m Sarah, by the way.’                     It was like a shutter fell, the girl’s face turning expressionless. ‘I don’t have one,’ she bit out, voice flat.          I hesitated, not sure what to say to that, feeling I should comfort her, but sure that if I did, she’d bite my head off (possibly literally).           ‘Do you want one?’ the question burst out impulsively.          Her head rocked back as though she’d been slapped, and I winced. I’d made another mistake – it seemed like even when talking to a magical creature who just looked like a girl my age, I still couldn’t do social stuff properly. I always ended up offending people, even when I hadn’t meant to – half the time, I didn’t even realise I’d done something to upset them. It usually resulted in me keeping quiet when I wasn’t around people I knew.           ‘You are…offering me a name?’ the girl said wonderingly. I nodded, starting to brighten. She didn’t sound offended – maybe I hadn’t screwed this up!           Yet.           ‘Only if you want one.’           She hesitated, studiously not looking at me, picking at my bedspread with her good hand. ‘I…wouldn’t mind one,’ she said softly.           I beamed at her. I already had the perfect name. ‘How about Jasmine?’           (In my defense, she really did look a lot like a real-life Disney princess, and also – Djinn. I made a mental note never to let her watch Aladdin.)          ‘Jasmine.’ The newly named girl repeated softly to herself, before smiling. It was a small smile, but, I realised, the first time I’d seen her do so. I swallowed, throat suddenly dry, and face flushed as I looked down at where my hands were clasping each other in my lap.           It was a beautiful smile.          There was a moment of awkward silence that was probably only really awkward to me, before I was able to look at her again without blushing, and noticed she was scowling down at her broken arm. That reminded me. ‘Do you have enough magic – or energy, or whatever – to fix your arm?’           ‘I already told you –’           ‘No, no hear me out!’ I interrupted, voice getting louder as I got more excited. ‘I’ve been thinking, and when you teleported us – you teleported us, not just me. Your magic worked on you – because you weren’t trying to do something for yourself, you were trying to do it for me.’          ‘Your point?’ She raised an eyebrow at me, and I felt a brief moment of envy – I’d never been able to do that single eyebrow, raised condescendingly, thing.           ‘Well, right now, healing your arm would be doing something for me! Cause I don’t like knowing you’re in pain, and the break is kinda gross, and also I really want to see you do more magic so – what if you focused on that? You’re not healing your arm for you, you’re healing it for me?’           She frowned. ‘I…don’t think that will work?’ I latched onto the hesitation in her doubt.           ‘What’s the harm in trying?’          She nodded slightly as she acknowledged my point, then closed her eyes and focused. I leaned forward, excitement making me tremble. For a moment nothing happened – then, with a sickening snap, the break in her arm straightened out. Despite the sound, Jasmine didn’t even flinch, opening her eyes and raising her previously broken arm up and tilting it from side to side, inspecting it. I did the same.           ‘Is it fixed?’ I asked.          She moved her arm around a moment more, straightening it, then nodded. I smiled happily at her, letting out a breath I’d been holding in. It had only occurred to me after saying it, but the ‘harm’ could very well have been her blowing up her arm or something.           And now, with her arm healed…she didn’t really need me anymore, did she.        ‘So…you said you were separated from your lamp?’ I prompted, slightly desperately.           I didn’t want her to go.          She nodded, and moved back slightly on my bed, relaxing a bit more as she did so, and I realised how stiff and tense she’d been before. Even if she hadn’t been showing it, a broken arm still hurt.          ‘I was fighting another one of my kind,’ she said. ‘I lost.’ She scowled at the reminder. ‘When he won, he robbed me of my lamp, and sent it through space – it could be anywhere on this planet.’           She did still need me!           ‘What does it look like?’           ‘What?’           ‘Your lamp – what does it look like? We could look for it!’           She looked at me weirdly. ‘Did you not hear me say it could be anywhere on this planet?’          ‘That’s what the Internet is for!’ I beamed at her. ‘We could post something on craigslist, social media – I have Twitter, Tumblr AND Instagram, and I’ve got quite a few followers – someone’s bound to have seen a lamp!’           Jasmine sighed and shook her head. ‘That would work – if it looked like a lamp. Being separated from me, it will have gone into defense mode, and taken on a disguise.’        ‘Like a TARDIS?’          ‘A what?’ she asked, then continued before I could explain. Guess it had been a rhetorical question. I had a bad habit of answering those. ‘It could appear as anything, from a building to a single grain of sand on a beach somewhere, and until I touch it I will not know what it is.’           ‘So, almost exactly like a TARDIS.’           ‘I do not know what this TARDIS you speak of is.’ Jasmine said flatly.           I made a mental note to show her all my Doctor Who episodes.          ‘So, it’s hopeless?’ I felt dejected. I’d really enjoyed helping Jasmine. And if I wasn’t able to help her anymore, did that mean she would leave?           ‘Not at all.’ Jasmine denied. ‘I said I would know it when I touched it, did I not? It will simply take a while.’           ‘How long is ‘a while’?’           ‘Probably not more then a few thousand years.’ Jasmine shrugged, then her face blanked as she sat up very straight, carefully not looking at me. ‘While I am without my lamp, I am without a home, or a way of recovering my energy through food and sleep.’ She said stiffly. ‘As such, having a place to stay would be of great aid in my quest –’           ‘You can stay with me!’ I interrupted, leaning forward so abruptly that I startled her. Her eyes darted to mine, wide with shock.           ‘Just like that?’           ‘Just like that!’ I nodded at her, smiling.          Jasmine rose to her feet abruptly and started to pace. I felt my smile falter. Had I said something wrong? Finally, she stood still and let out a breathy sigh, turning to where I was still sitting cross-legged on the bed. Her eyes were deep and dark.           ‘You are a very strange human,’ she said. ‘I do not think I have ever met anyone like you.           Was that good or bad?           ‘Sooo…will you be staying?’           Jasmine bowed her head to me, curtain of silky black hair falling over her shoulders. ‘For as long as you will have me.’          I bounced off the bed and rushed over to her, grabbing her hands and smiling so hard my cheeks felt like they were going to burst. ‘I’ll have you as long as you need!’           I’d made a friend! A magic friend! This day couldn’t possibly get any better!          ‘Come on! I’ve gotta introduce you to my parents!’ And convince my parents that she should stay indefinitely. Eh. I’d burn that bridge when I got to it.           Still holding one of Jasmine’s hands, I headed out my bedroom door and down the stairs to where I could see the flickering light of the television, marshalling my arguments, still smiling.           I wonder if Jasmine is any good at math?

"And why the hell would I do that?" It’s a perfectly valid question. A drink invitation from Harry Potter is about as likely of a scenario as me streaking down Piccadilly in broad daylight. Consider me completely thrown off.
Sometimes it only takes a week to change everything. The story of how twenty-five-year-old Draco Malfoy hit one Harry Potter with a door and knocked both of their lives into somewhere entirely new.
15. bafflinghaze wrote the best treasure is up Harry’s arse (2891, Explicit) Summary:
Harry and Draco probably had a tumultuous time getting together, filled with angst and denial and pining and brooding. However, this is not that story. Here, Draco makes Harry come (more than once).
16. Orpheous87 wrote Breakin' the Rules (3146, Teen and Up) Summary:
Harry and Draco are Auror partners. They're in a relationship that they've been forced to keep secret due to relationships between Aurors being forbidden. Harry is okay with this, as he hasn't come out to anyone other than Draco, but after a mission goes awry, their relationship is exposed.
17. tigersilver wrote The HogShagMan (31685, Mature) Summary:
Professor Potter is called upon to teach the first-ever official course on Magical Sexual Relations at Hogwarts and, in the process, must navigate the pitfalls of relationship-building, the nefarious schemings of those entrusted with school funding, and the uneven tempers of his boss and several co-workers. Clearly, only ‘the’ Harry Potter can pull it all off.
18. Gnarf wrote Let's not wait for France (17714, Teen and Up) Summary:
All Harry had wanted from his Eighth year at Hogwarts was a little peace and a little privacy but, from the moment that he stepped onto Platform 9 3/4, it was obvious that nothing was ever going to be that easy.
An accidental bond with Malfoy that resulted in them having to stay together at all times was the final straw.
Things couldn't be worse. So much to a quiet year in Hogwarts.
19. GallifreyisBurning wrote Take All That You See (19666, Teen and Up) Summary:
20. gracerene wrote True Children Still (34240, Explicit) Summary:
After years of dancing around each other, Draco and Harry have finally begun to date, though they're taking things slow. They've got enough to figure out as it is, and the last thing Harry needs is an unexpected introduction to desires he's not quite ready to face.
21. RoonilWazlibMalfoy wrote Asking For A Friend?
22. fluxweed wrote All I Have to Do (9575, Explicit) Summary:
The Patented Daydream Charm (Adult Edition) allows you to enter a top-quality, highly realistic thirty-minute sexual fantasy. Solitude and privacy spells advised.

23. simeysgirl wrote Take My Wonder (3949, Explicit) Summary:
Harry Potter is the author of very well-written children's text books. Joshua Starkweather is the author of not-so-well-written erotic fiction. Only one person knows that they are one and the same.

As a specialist Healer in dark magic, Draco has had his fair share of difficult cases and awkward patients. Still, nothing has prepared him for a curse-paralysed Harry Potter.
26. FreddieFoxBaxter wrote Walk in the sun (18233, Explicit) Summary:
27. Countingcr0ws wrote You Need to Just Do Whatever You Want (7998, General) Summary:
Draco's confused when he receives a manual explaining his magical inheritance. Being a veela would be good (at least he would be prettier), and a vampire would have been fine (another excuse to hide himself in the Manor). But a descendant of the God of Love, complete with arrows and a love quota? Now that's just bonkers.
A story in which Draco is Cupid (sort of).
28. PollyWeasley wrote Under my Skin (8258, Explicit) Summary:
One year after the war and after Hogwarts restorations, Harry is back at school to finally finish his education. He wasn't expecting McGonagall to assign him to protect Draco Malfoy, in case he was bullied during the classes. Although really just wants to relax on his last year in Hogwarts, he'd seen how Draco had changed at the trials. He knew being around him would be easy enough... Wouldn't it?
29. Drarryismymuse wrote Glory, glory! (16898, Explicit) Summary:

35. xanthippe74 wrote On Your Shore (35113, Mature) Summary:
Clearing out a remote house full of cursed collectibles in the Outer Hebrides? Not a problem for an experienced curse breaker like Harry Potter. Spending a week with the straight, happily-married man that he’s starting to have feelings for? And sharing a bed with him at night? Surely Harry can handle that, too. But both the house and Draco Malfoy have secrets to uncover, and Harry might be in deeper water than he thought.

37. Ischa wrote Always (20147, Explicit) Summary:

40. acupforslytherin wrote Let Out the Beast (9649, Explicit) Summary:
In the wizarding world where alphas are looked down upon for their lack of control and unseemly aggression, it is generally accepted that they are not allowed to work in places like schools and hospitals where their nature could risk the people there. When Draco Malfoy suddenly shows up at Hogwarts smelling strongly like an alpha, Harry is beyond baffled. The fact that no one else seems to catch his scent only adds to his confusion. But, of course, the most puzzling part is how Harry’s body reacts to that scent.
41. Erebeus wrote Flowers, Dildos and Other Courtship Gifts (15853, Teen and Up) Summary:
Harry Potter is the Ministry's star auror trainee, and Draco Malfoy is the cute florist in Diagon Alley who Harry stares at through the window during lunch breaks and leaves.

47. Cibee (Cibeeeee) wrote The Spoiling of Sex From Enthusiastic Ignorance (6079, Explicit) Summary:
Draco is going to lose his virginity, so help him god, and he's going to lose it to one Harry Potter. Why? Because of his big cock, his status as The Top Five Quidditch Players in England, and Witch Weekly's Most-Eligible Bachelor for eight years straight. At least that's what he tells himself. Too bad first times rarely go as one plans, and now Harry is looking miserable and Draco doesn’t understand why.
