Hey so remember the briefly mentioned Ralbert Tangled AU?
Yeah I went a little wild with it.
Albert DaSilva - Rapunzel
Tumblr media
After being kidnapped as a baby for his magical hair, Albert has lived in a tower, hidden away from society for all his life. His whole life has been spent in routine. Paint the walls, sweep the floors, bake a treat, try out sewing, bandage his fingers after he pricked himself with the needle, read a book, paint the walls again, sing while his "father" Snyder brushes his hair, make hazelnut soup, go to sleep and repeat.
That's how it's been for forever. But now there's this rather dashing boy who's willing to take him out of the tower to see the lanterns that fly on his birthday every year, and he's starting to realise that maybe that maybe a little change in the routine isn't so bad. And hey, is it just Albert and Race, or does this "Missing Prince" everybody talks about kinda look like him?
Antonio "Racetrack" Higgins - Eugene Fitzherbert
Tumblr media
Antonio Higgins, infamously known throughout the land as Racetrack, has spent most of his life on the run. After managing to get caught up helping the Delancey brothers, he's been stuck helping them ever since. Don't get him wrong, he loves the adrenaline rush he gets while being chased by the guards, and some of the things he happens to steal, but this wasn't exactly what he planned for his life.
After running away from the Royal guards after stealing the lost prince's crown, he finds Albert's tower and tries to hide away inside. Instead, he's knocked over the head with a frying pan and forced to take this strange boy with beautiful red hair and a colourful personality out to see the floating lanterns. Slowly, he comes to terms with the fact that maybe all he ever truely wanted, was love?
Other Characters:
Mother Gothel - Snyder
Stabbingthon Brothers - The Delanceys
Maximus (Who is a human in this AU, don't ask questions. He's the Head Guards second in command.) - David Jacobs
King Fredric - Theodore Roosevelt
Queen Arianna - Medda Larkin
The Ugly Ducking Thugs - All the other Newsies, Hook Hand being Tommy Boy and Nasone being Romeo

Bestie pls can I have some Chameron headcanons?? I'm desperate honestly it's a problem. You don't have to btw.
bestie. of course. my old newsies mutuals may have noticed that i do this thing where i enter a fandom and suddenly i can only talk about one specific ship, yeah that ship here happens to be chameron and i am always more than happy to talk about them.
let's just do some nice happy headcannons today bc a couple days ago i wrote a fic about charlie leaving welton and i've decided i officially need a break from angst, alright
IN FACT YOU KNOW WHAT let's make them post-welton !!!!!! y'know after all the poets including neil graduate and keating never gets fired as always since that is the canon ending of the movie, nothing bad happens ever.
okay so.
charlie and cameron have been rooming together since year 1, it's kinda the end of an era that they're now both supposed to move into separate apartments and they're both really sad about it but refuse to say anything
you think this wouldn't be a problem for two people who have been dating for a year and shared a dorm since they were children, so they can easily move in together, but this is charlie and cameron communication kings so obviously they're being stubborn and aren't saying anything
and they just spend their last weeks at welton all like
"yeah yeah i wonder who's gonna help you find your stuff when you're not living with me anymore,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,cause like you won't. in a few weeks you won't."
"come on stop studying and talk to me i'm bored" "well soon you won't be able to talk to me whenever you want. because i will be in a different place. like i'll no longer be around 24/7."
"you know you better treasure these last moments you get to see me. cause after we graduate who knows when you'll see me again,,,,," "okay, charlie that's a little dramatic, you're not leaving the country-" "i'll be gone, cam, very soon. forever." "you won't be-" "i mean god knows where i'll be-"
it ends up being charlie who asked (i wrote about that here !) and so we have charlie and cameron sharing an apartment :)
both of them get into harvard because,,, that's welton boys for you of course literally the entire school makes the ivy league. cameron's literally smart as shit he can make whatever school he wants and charlie,,, well charlie has a lot of money.
i'm kidding i'm kidding, charlie's no doofus and attending welton is already a good look for any university, charlie can definitely make harvard on his own if he could survive welton but y'know being filthy rich wasn't exactly a disadvantage
charlie will always show cameron off all like "my boyfriend goes to harvard you know !!!!!!!!" and cameron's like "char,,,, so do you,,,,,,,"
but y'all don't care about who goes where i'm aware of this, let's get into the apartment shenanigans
okay, sharing a dorm for years in welton definitely had its advantages because there's none of those annoying habits of someone's you only start noticing after you're under the same roof, like leaving their clothes on the floor or playing music too loudly, they're already aware of all that stuff, they don't care anymore
they do have their own rooms now, but it doesn't matter a lot because they keep just falling asleep together on the couch.
most of the time cameron will just wake up in the middle of the night and attempt to take charlie to his room but he's learned overtime that charlie will just whine and complain until he stays with him so he ends up just taking him to his own room in the first place
slowly it becomes less "cameron's room" and more "their room", the other room just kinda stays there.
cameron is a GOD TIER cook we'e been over this but somehow they only take advantage of that skill of his on really??? questionable occasions?????
like they'll order chinese from the place down the street for dinner but if cameron wakes up to find charlie in the kitchen at 3 am munching on a piece of toast he'll be like "okay let's make some onion soup."
midnight snacks are for amateurs. here we have midnight meals.
they bake together a lot, though. whenever they find time cameron will just whip out a recipe and they'll bake something together, and they'll be very couple-y and disgusting while doing it too
of course it always resorts in them making a big mess
"charlie. charie stop putting your hands in the brownie mix."
"okay, fine."
"charlie, your hand's still in there, stop it."
"or else what, what're you gonna d- WH- DID YOU JUST THROW AN EGG AT ME WHAT THE FUCK"
then they'll have to spend the entire afternoon cleaning up the kitchen
"what're you laughing about now, dalton?"
"you have flour on your cheek."
"and whose fault is that?"
"stop being annoying, you're cute right now"
"oh yeah?"
"mhm, yeah."
cameron overworks himself a lot and a lot of times charlie will get up late at night to find him still studying
he'll always go up to him like "cam, tf. it's four in the morning. come to bed."
"i just have to get this finished."
"well, okay, i'll just stay up with you until you go to sleep."
"charlie that's not healthy you need to-,,,,,,,,,,oh you're evil, dalton, threatening me with your own well-being."
"damn right i am, now go to sleep."
okay we all know charlie. we know how he is. so it's no surprise to anyone that it didn't take long for him to bring a random stray animal into the house
cameron just comes back from class to see charlie with a tiny ginger car.
"cam, you're back-"
"nope. not happening, take it back."
"hey, it is a she, and i love her now."
"no, no you don't, she's going back."
"i can't i'm attached to her! look at her! she's adorable, she's my new favorite ginger."
",,,,,, okay now she's definitely going back."
she did not go back.
charlie named her arabella and cameron insisted she was annoying and always wanted attention and wouldn't let him study
"hey, you said the exact same things about me and you love me now, give her time!"
"i don't love you right now."
"well, i love you a lot. and i love her too, she's part of the house now."
",,,,,,,god, fine, you're lucky you're my weakness. i'll tolerate her."
one time charlie returned from class to find cameron sleeping on the couch with arabella on his lap.
he never hears the end of it once he's awake
"so, how's hating her going for you, richard?"
"shut up, she's warm."
"so you no longer despise my cat? because she's warm?"
"first of all she's our cat i don't clean cat fur all over the house for her to be your cat and,,,, she's not all that bad."

Two (2) people encouraged this so now I’m gonna talk about it so here’s some Star Trek newsies:
Jack
Farmboy from Earth
Smart but absolutely one hundred percent refuses to use it academically
Like...Fs in school but he built a mini airplane in his barn once and thinks faster on his feet than anyone else
Gets persuaded to join Starfleet because his dad was in it
At the academy, he makes friends with Race who’s training to be a doctor
Davey
Is a Vulcan whose mom is human
Davey went the Spock route, throwing himself into his studies and doing his best to be as completely Vulcan as he could be so he’d be accepted
Les, on the other hand, never did. Les is an emotional, exuberant little kid who loves laughing, couldn’t care less about what logic has to say, and is the Bane of Existence for his poor teachers who thought they’d be getting a model student like Davey
But when Davey gets accepted into the Vulcan Science Academy he gets some passive aggressive comments about both his mom and his little brother and he’s like fuck that I’ll take my skills elsewhere if you won’t accept my and my family here
so he also joins Starfleet
Jack still refuses to use his intelligence in the way he’s expected to but even as he’s being a total jackass his teachers can see he’s smart
Davey gets asked to design a test specifically to test the ability to think under pressure that captains need using the power of Vulcan Logictm and Jack takes it earlier than most people just to prove he can
and fails
so he takes it again
fails again and realizes it’s designed to be unbeatable so he breaks the test, technically passes it, and is treated to a very upset Davey who knows he cheated because that test is supposed to be unbeatable but can’t actually prove that it wasn’t sheer dumb luck
because the Academy knows the test isn’t supposed to be beaten, it doesn’t mean Jack is a captain, but it does reaffirm that he’s a lot smarter than he acts like he is
I don’t want to follow the plot of the 2009 movie anymore because it’s too depressing so here’s a bunch of stuff that happens after they all somehow end up in space together:
Beam me up Spotty becomes a shipwide catchphrase and Spot despises it.
“I do a very serious job! Stop making a joke of it! How many times have I saved your lives!”
Jack is very tactile. Davey is not. At first the two mix like oil and water, but with enough shaking that makes a very tasty salad dressing and they eventually get along and then Davey high fives Jack and it’s like...a huge deal
Race is awful. Just the worst. Will and has walked into a room with a sock on the door because he saw a sock on the door and therefore decided that was the time to deliver medication that just couldn’t wait until morning
Crutchie is the small, young cyborg who gets a little chuckle from everyone who meets him at first and then he smiles at them while taking out their ship without having to get up out of his seat because he’s good at his job and hates being underestimated
Jack and Race attach a knife to their cleaning robot and name it Stabby. The first time Davey sees it is the strongest display of emotion anyone on the ship has seen from him
Jack sends captionless comics out once a week and it’s a competition to see who can write the funniest caption. The winner is posted on the bridge.
Davey won the comic contest once but never admitted it was him. Everyone knew but he never said it. It was a picture of him and the caption he wrote was “according to my calculations this is stupid and offensive” but he really did think it was funny.
Davey very slowly comes out of his shell, partly because Jack is very very determined to get him to come out of his shell
The first time he laughs out loud like not just smiles, laughs, there’s an “and the entire room clapped” moment
Jack meet’s Davey’s parents and Davey’s mom pegs instantly that Jack is in love with Davey but when she tries to mention it to Davey Davey has no idea because how is he supposed to know how to read emotions when he grew up on Vulcan?
Davey’s mom bluntly tells Jack that if he doesn’t explicitly state everything he feels Davey will never figure it out
Also Jack meets Les and finds an insane amount of humor in seeing a little boy who looks just as Vulcan as Davey doing somersaults around Davey while cheering excitedly while Davey keeps a completely straight face
That visit is also the first time Jack truly appreciates how powerful Vulcan insults can be, because they’re so impersonal sounding on a ship full of non-Vulcans but not so much on Vulcan when those are the only insults used
Jack finally tells Davey that he’s in love with him with another comic with a cutesy caption and Davey blushes all the way to the tips of his ears
Other Vulcans are Horrified when the visit the ship because they see a ship mostly full of chaotic humans and then they see a Vulcan and they’re like...ahhh, somebody sane by our standards.
And then Davey goes and kisses Jack’s cheek and laughs out loud when Stabby finally gets Spot’s ankles and generally behaves in a very illogical and emotional way and it’s just too much for them
Mostly I just like the idea of Jack as Kirk and Davey as Spock djgsdlhlas thank you and goodnight

Blanket Forts and Frogs
Author/Writer/Whatever: Dreams Word Count: 1224 Quick Notes: Just some good platonic Smallsper, dudes Pairings: None, just some good platonic fluff!!!
Smalls was practically bouncing on their heels at this point, waiting for their best friend ever, Sniper, to arrive. The most amazing plan had been set into stone ages ago, and now they were both going to finally fulfill it. A blanket fort would be created, so big that it would basically covered the entire apartment. It had never been done before until now, and heck, if it wasn’t going to make world records, they didn’t know what would. They continued to gather pillows, blankets, sheets, and even their godang mattress, all for the sake of the best blanket fort to exist in complete and utter glory.
The buzzer beeped and they yelped, not really expecting it, despite knowing that someone was coming over. When Smalls realized who it probably was though, they frantically ran over to respond and open the door. They quickly wrapped their arms around Sniper, almost screaming out with laughter. Sniper, being the taller one, picked Smalls up and spun them around as she laughed, “Well hello to you too!”
Smalls laughed more, still hugging her, “Did you bring the stuff???”
Sniper smiled, and placed Smalls onto the ground, brandishing three garbage bags absolutely stuffed to the brim, “Of course I did! It isn’t gonna be the biggest blanket fort for nothing!”
Smalls smirked, and gestured around their living room, “Well then, let’s do this thing!”
She rolled her eyes and smiled, and dumped out the blankets and pillows that plagued the inside of the bags, “You ready?”
“Well, I should have some sort of purpose in this realm, so-“
Sniper sighed, “Are you saying that your whole purpose is to just build this blanket fort?...”
“.....Maybe….”
Sniper started to laugh again, “Jesus christ, Smalls….you’re too damn much sometimes-“
Smalls grinned happily, “Yeah, but that’s why we’re friends, right?”
She smiled, and sighed a bit, “Right. Now then….we were about to make a blanket fort, right?”
“A giant blanket fort, so be exact-“ They corrected, smirking a bit at Sniper.
Sniper just rolled her eyes and sighed, “Yeah, yeah. A giant blanket fort. The question is, how are we gonna wrap the blankets around everywhere?”
Smalls took in a breath to explain, but then was hit with the suddenness of, “I uh...didn't get that far, actually...maybe we just….heckin...tie them together???”
“So...you're suggesting that we...tie them?..How??”
They shrugged, “I mean like...we could also attach them to the walls and stuff with uh...duct tape??? Will that work???”
Sniper sighed, and started to just stand there, thinking for a moment or two, “...I mean...I guess it...technically would?...Do we even have duct ta-”
Smalls just held up two rolls of duct tape that they had somehow conjured. Sniper didn't question it much, and just took the rolls without asking anything that just might implode the world. Not for today, at least.
While Sniper was lost in thought, Smalls started to rock back and forth from heel to heel impatiently, “So….are we gonna use duct tape???? Or???”
She snapped out of it, “Huh?....Oh, yeah. This'll...hopefully work?...We might need a bit more duct tape, but hey, we’ll see where this goes, right?”
Smalls nodded happily, and they began the grueling task of taping the blankets’ ends to the wall, and trying to tie them all together in order to join up in the middle. You can imagine how unsuccessful this was, due to Smalls’ obvious lack of height.
Sniper sighed a bit, and grabbed the blankets, “Here. I'll put them up, and maybe you could get like, the pillows and mattress??? Does that sound like a good idea?”
They nodded in agreement, and immediately went off to find more pillows and blankets for their ultimate conquest. Smalls mostly flipped and flopped pillows and the mattress in random places when they found the supplies, but they also found a bunch of random fairy lights, so they hung them up on the ‘inside’ of the blanket fort, giggling a bit to themselves. Besides, all of the best forts needed so kind of light source, right?
Sniper, on the other hand, was still very busy with making sure that the blanket fort’s outsides wouldn't collapse. Luckily, she was both kind of tall, and somewhat clever, so there weren't any major problems or issues.
After a few hours, and yes, it did actually take that long, much to the two’s surprise, it was completed. Smalls was absolutely ecstatic, while Sniper was just glad to see her friend happy.
Smalls dashed off to their room, and grabbed their frog, Gnomeo Gregory Hilnon the Toag(Toad), or just Gregory for short. They placed the beautiful creature onto his own little pillow throne, and surrounded his kingdom with pictures of other frogs.
Sniper would’ve asked if she hadn’t known Smalls for all of her life already. In the meanwhile, she went to take pictures of the magnificent fort, because holy shit, it might actually be a record or something.
Eventually though, being bored with the picture taking, Smalls practically tackled Sniper, “Sniper!!! Wanna make some popcorn??”
She sighed in response, “More like I’ll make you some popcorn. Remember the stove incident?”
They continued to bounce, “But popcorn can be microwaved too!!!”
Sniper gave them an even blanker stare, “...Remember the microwave pancakes?...”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about, those were delicious!!!”
“Mmm, yes, I love the taste of biohazardous pancakes-“
They huffed a bit, and puffed up their cheeks, “Can you please just make me some heckin popcorn????”
She smiled a bit, and ruffled their hair softly, “Yeah. Sure Smalls.”
With that, she went over to the stove. Despite the fact that the blankets were a serious fire hazard, she proceeded to make popcorn anyways. Of course, it got at least slightly burnt, but in her defense, she also had to watch out for the absolute embodiment of chaos, Smalls.
After taking out the popcorn though, she glanced around, and saw that Smalls was missing. How did they disappear in the span of a few seconds? Who knew.
However, Sniper crept around anyways, kind of debating whether or not to dump popcorn onto Smalls’ head when she saw them again.
She heard a creak behind her, along with the fizz of soda being opened, and threw the snack blindly. Sniper heard a small yell, and speak of the devil, it was Smalls themselves, holding two opened sodas with Gregory croaking on their shoulder.
Smalls crossed their arms as Sniper began to laugh, huffing under their breath, “Now that was just plain rude-“
Sniper snorted, “Oh yeah? What were you planning with those sodas, then?...”
“I was just going to...give them to you?...”
“Yeah. That’s a likely story.”
They looked away, and puffed their cheek out again. Sniper just smiled, and ruffled their hair again, “Come on. I’ll let you pick a movie to make it up to you. Absolutely any movie you want, we’ll watch. And that’s a pinky promise.”
Smalls looked up at her, a bit hopeful, “...High school musical?...”
She sighed, smiling even more, “High school musical.”
And with that, the two sat down on a complete mass of blankets and pillows, watching the complete trilogy of High School Musical, with Gnomeo Gregory Hilnon the Toag(Toad) by their sides.

Newsies’ Little Sister
Chapter 9 - Queen of New York
TW: Beaning up, Swearing, It’s a bit ooc
Word Count: 2.2k oof sorry babes
Genre: mostly angst
Emmeline's POV
"Welcome to the Newsie family Emmeline! But first, you need a Newsie name..." The boy in front of me was wearing a deep blue shirt, like the water under the Brooklyn Bridge. He was quite good looking, but he looked like he'd been through some pretty bad stuff, I could see it in his eyes...
"Got any ideas about what yer nickname's gonna be?" He asked.
"Ummm no...sorry." I replied, shaking my head. It was all a bit overwhelming to be honest, which I wasn't most of the time... I turned to Elmer and my brother.
"You guys got any ideas?" They thought for a bit, but before they could get a word in edgeways, I heard a noise coming from outside the door.
Loud footsteps marching up the front steps. I was curious to see who it was, so I pushed through the crowd of boys and went to the door. I was just about to open it, when it suddenly burst open and three men came in.
I backed up fast to get out of their way, and I heard shouts from behind me. They were mostly 'get outta here!', and 'hey get away from them!'. That last one stood out to me, but I froze when I saw the man in the middle of the group. I knew that I had seen him before, but I couldn't figure out where from. He started to move towards me.
"Hello..." He smiled meanly. "You'd better stay right here girl...You cost me a lot of money!" When he said that, I felt everyone collectively stare at me. I tried to ignore them, but it was hard, seeming as I was already the odd one out, being the only girl
"Oh shit!" I somehow managed to move again, I started to get away from them, when the big man in the middle grabbed my arm. Then I realised where I had seen him before. I fought against him, and all of a sudden, I felt more hands on my other arm pulling me away.
The man let go and I fell to the floor. I scrambled to my feet quickly and tried to run to the back of the room. I glanced back at the door and heard more yells. I saw the men were shoving the newsies away to the side. They were trying to get to me!
Then a figure stepped in between me and the men. But he was shoved away easily. He ended up on the floor and I saw who it was.
"I'm so sorry Nick!"
"It's fine Em! Just get away!" He winced in pain from the fall and he held his ankle in a strange way. I nodded to him and pushed my way through even more. I was used to running away from people. It was usually the bulls I was running from, but I didn't know who these men worked for.
"Hey you! Stop girl! Wait till I get my hands on you kid!"
I raced down the corridors, turning down different ones ever so often, until I saw a door at the end of the hall. I had nothing to lose at that point, so I sped up and burst out of the door. I turned back to see if they were following me. They weren't. I'd lost them, thank god! The boys must've stalled them. Or they had given up.
I stopped to catch my breath and sat down on the floor of the dark alleyway, with my back against the wall. I sat and waited there for a while, breathing surprisingly hard. Then I heard the door slam. I span my head around to see if there was anyone there. There wasn't; but the door was closed.
I jumped up and rushed to the door, I tugged on the handle but it wouldn't open. I banged on the door a bit, but then gave up on that and went out into the street. I walked around the building and towards the front steps again. I glanced into the front window and began to climb the steps.
I put my foot on the first step, then before I could go any further, the three men came out of the alleyway on the other side of the building. They came out of the shadows and grabbed my arms.
"Get offa me!" I shouted, I threw my head back and heard a crack and the man's grip on my arms weakened. I shrug him off and span around. I draw my clenched fist back and swing as hard as I can. I catch the side of his head, even though he is a lot taller than me. He takes a few steps back from the punch, and holds his face. He then nodded to one of the other two men.
I felt a punch the side of my head, then a blow to my stomach. I was dazed and staggered off to the side, holding my stomach. Then I felt another fist punch my stomach and I fell to the floor, winded. Then a kick to my face. I realised I needed to get out of there.
So, using all of my remaining strength, I pushed myself off the floor and ran away as fast as I could.
I ran past the lodging house, and on my way past, I saw a few faces in the window. But Mush and Elmer weren't there. Maybe they didn't see me getting soaked; or if they did, maybe they just didn't care...The boys in the windows didn't try to help me, so I guessed I'd have to do it on my own. As per fricking usual.
I hurriedly pushed those thoughts out of my mind when I heard shouts of the men coming from behind me. I pushed on down the street and quickly ducked into an alleyway. I stopped to catch my breath, sitting down in the shadows about half way down the alley. I looked around a bit and saw that there were a few empty green bottles and a few wooden crates here and there. Nothing important, but be careful. If I knocked into any of them, it would tell the men where I was. And I sure as hell didn't want that!
I heard their footsteps running up to the alleyway and I got up and ducked behind some of the crates. I peeked through the gaps in the planks of wood and saw them run past. But I only counted two...
The third one, the youngest out of all of them, came into the alleyway. He looked out of breath, so he sat down and looked around, just like I did. I realised that he might be able to see me. It is quite hard to hide bright red hair...Anyways, I ducked down even further behind the crates; and I think it was that sudden movement that caught his attention. He got up and walked towards my hiding place.
I knew he was going to find me, and I knew that he would beat me up when he did. I couldn't stay there either, so I jumped up and punched him in the face. I started to run towards the street ahead of me, but then I found out that he wasn't as easily dazed as the old man. He grabbed onto my hair and gave it a sharp tug backwards. I fell to my knees and grazed them on the hard surface. He was still holding onto my hair, and he kicked my face, then stomach.
It was too familiar. He was familiar...He reminded me of my father. And the day he...he tried to...no. It couldn't be. But he still reminded me of my father and the things he used to do to me. I had sudden flashes of unwanted and horribly vivid memories. Memories of the basement. Memories of the beatings. And the blood. And the pain...And of Nick. And what they did to him as well...
I closed my eyes, and then with as much force as I could, I drew back my fist and punched him in the place between his legs. His grip loosened as he doubled over in pain. I managed to free myself, and as I got up I punched him again.
"SHE'S HERE! MORRIS!" He yelled. I ran towards the mouth of the alley, but froze as I saw the other two men coming out from the shadows. The younger one went to grab me but I ducked and landed a punch to his stomach. The older man looked much stronger and I knew that if I tried to fight him, I'd lose. It just wasn't worth it. So I scrambled away from him and further down into the alley. I ran past the youngest and looked down at him, he was still of the floor, and I kicked him on the way.
I looked back up again and saw a tall brick wall blocked the end of the alley. I started to panic when I heard more voices shouting in the street. Those voices sounded familiar and friendly, but I didn't really trust anyone. I built up a toughness that comes from being on the streets and having to steal to survive. But deep down, I wanted to trust people, I just couldn't...Not after I'd been sold out and put in the Brooklyn Refuge so many times.
I panicked even more when the three men advanced towards me slowly. Then one of them, the middle one, lashed out and caught the side of my face. I backed up against the wall, I had been in this situation before, but it didn't make it any less scary. But I tried not to show them my fear, because I knew that they would use that to their advantage.
I had a split second to work out what I was going to do. I shoved the youngest and the old man back as hard as I could, jumped, and caught the top of the wall with both hands. My feet scrabbled on the cold brick, trying to find and dent to push myself up. I found it and pulled myself up. But when I was almost at the top, I felt the man that I hadn't pushed away, grab my foot hard. I used the other one to kick him hard in the face, and he let go.
I pulled myself up the rest of the way and stood up on top of the wall. I looked out into the street and saw that there were a few newsies running around in the street. I couldn't quite tell what they were doing. I didn't know whether they were playing or looking for me. Probably the first one. I didn't think any one would want to look for me. I'm just a street kid that no one likes or loves.
I saw one of them look my way and point up towards me. Then he pointed to the men at the bottom of the wall. They were trying to build some sort of ladder to get up to me, but I kicked one of them in the face again and he fell through the crates.
I laughed. For the first time in ages, I laughed. And it felt good. It was like a warm glow in my stomach had spread throughout my entire body. But I didn't have time for that, so I made my way across the wall, balancing like the tightrope walkers I used to see in Central Park.
I made it to the end and leaped across towards the other alleyway, but I didn't jump down. I jumped to get to the fire escape that was attached to the other building. I grabbed it and pulled myself over the railing and jumped up the stairs two at a time. A few heads popped out of windows to see what the noise was. And a few people yelled at me, because it was getting dark and they wanted to sleep. But I didn't care.
I reached the top and looked out over the rooftops. I wiped as much blood off my face as I could and I let out a long sigh of relief. That then was the first time I had felt truly free. Up there on the rooftops where no one could get to me.
I wandered across a few of them, then sat down with my feet hanging over the edge of a building. I stared out over the city. I saw the smoke rising through the air, and the sun was setting. Casting the warm glow and near-last light as it went. I could see small patches of green, then larger patches of grey buildings to break the green up.
The wind started to blow and it started to get cold up there, so I wrapped my shirt around me tighter and stuffed my hands in my pockets. I felt slightly warmer like that. And I felt like a queen, looking out over her kingdom.
Yea...I felt like the Queen of New York.

--
David had spent a decent amount of time around the newsies, and he generally considered them all friends, but it was always strange to be alone with any of them. Especially Kid Blink. Especially now that he was back at school.
He wished Mush was here. He knew how to talk to him, at least. Around Mush, Blink always seemed less intimidating. Not that he’d ever really seen them apart before now. He’d begun to believe that the two were actually connected, mentally if not physically. But when he’d asked where Mush was, Blink had simply shrugged.
“You know where Jack is every second of the day?”
David had been forced to admit that he did not. That was, after all, why he was here in the Lodging House waiting for Jack to come back, rather than out on the streets searching for him.
Having made his point, Blink flopped back on his bunk and stared at the ceiling. David hesitated, unsure of what to do next. It could be hours before Jack finished up selling, and he wasn’t sure that awkwardly standing in the doorway for that long was really acceptable. At the same time, this was home for most of the newsies. Just barging in would have felt equally wrong.
He’d only been to the lodging house twice before, and both times Jack had been with him, guiding his movements with confidence and casual touches. Alone, Davey felt like an intruder, no matter that the man at the front desk had waved him up the stairs with barely a second glance the moment he mentioned Jack’s name.
“You just gonna stand there all day?” Blink asked.
“I…” David began, trailing off as he realized he didn’t have an answer.
“You…?” Blink prompted.
“I’m just waiting for Jack,” David explained.
“Well, you don’t have to wait in the doorway,” Blink said. “Pull up a bunk.”
“Won’t- I mean…. I don’t want to intrude….”
Blink scrutinized David with his good eye. “Whaddya mean intrude? You’re a newsie, same as the rest of us. Going back to school don’t change that.”
“I wouldn’t want to take someone else’s bed,” David explained awkwardly.
“If someone wants it I’m sure they’ll be happy to shove you off it,” Blink replied nonchalantly. “But things don’t much work like that around here. Newsies are in and out of the place all the time. It ain’t like anyone’s attached to a specific spot. You try to take stuff from someone’s locker, they’ll have an issue, but don’t worry about a bed.”
Hesitantly, David sat down on the nearest bunk bed. He could feel his every muscle tensing, waiting for someone to come yell at him about being in the wrong place, but as the minutes went by and no such admonishment was forthcoming, he slowly relaxed.
Every few moments, his eyes strayed to Blink. From what he could tell, Blink wasn’t doing anything, just laying on the bunk and staring at the ceiling. David would have thought he was asleep, except that his eye was still wide open. Finally, David mustered the courage to ask the question on the tip of his tongue.
“Why aren’t you out selling?”
“I didn’t feel like it,” Blink said. “Me and Mush have a deal. We get one day off a month, no questions asked.”
“That seems like a smart idea,” David said.
“You ain’t the only one with smart ideas, Mr. Walking Mouth,” Blink snapped.
“That’s not what I meant.”
David struggled to keep his voice steady. This wasn’t some boy from school. This was Kid Blink.
“Then what did you mean?” Blink asked.
“My ma, well, after she realized how hard school was for me, she let me have one day a quarter to skip school with no consequences. She’d write to the school and tell them I was sick, even if I wasn’t. Somehow, knowing I had that option made things easier, even on the days I did go.”
David looked at the floor, not quite sure why he’d shared that. It seemed unfair to be complaining about a school most of the newsies could never afford.
“Is school really that bad?”
There was something odd in the look Blink was giving him, but David couldn’t decipher it.
“It’s not- I mean, the school itself is fine. It’s just, well, some of the people aren’t so great and…”
“And you ain’t so good at standing up for yourself,” Blink surmised. “At least, not unless there are unions involved.”
A knot in the wooden floor was suddenly intensely interesting. He thought Blink would probably let the subject drop. He wasn’t sure if that was better or worse than continuing this increasingly awkward conversation.
“I don’t know how to stand up to people,” David admitted after a minute. “Forming a union and going on strike, well, there are plenty of pamphlets on how to do that. There aren’t any on how to fit in at school. Trust me. I asked.”
“And I’m guessing you can’t just punch ‘em?” Blink clenched his fists to demonstrate.
“I’m no good at fighting,” David pointed out. “Anyway, even if I thought that would work, I couldn’t risk getting thrown out.”
“Any school that throws a boy out for fighting can’t be that great,” Blink decided. “Someone needs to teach you how to throw a punch. It’s a life skill.”
--
“Blink taking the day off?” Jack asked.
Mush nodded, trying not to get annoyed at Jack for interrupting his attempt to count his papers.
…13… 14… 15-
“You wanna sell together?” Jack interrupted again.
Mush handed over his stack of papers. “Count these for me?”
Jack flipped through the papers quickly, his lips barely moving as he counted them. After the first count, he counted again.
“It’s fifty,” he confirmed, handing them back.
Mush hefted them up on his shoulder. “Where are we selling?”
Jack grinned. Mush knew he’d been lonely ever since David went back to school, and Mush couldn’t deny he’d enjoy the company. The days always seemed to drag without Blink.
“So happens I know a spot,” Jack said.
Mush shrugged, and motioned for him to lead on.
Unsurprisingly, one spot turned into two, and then three. Bustling street corners, crowded wrestling matches, busy storefronts. Jack never seemed to be able to stick to one place. Mush followed him around without complaint. He couldn’t deny that it made for an effective selling strategy. By three in the afternoon, they’d sold out.
“You going for the evening edition?” Jack asked.
“I’m going back to the lodging house to check on Blink first,” Mush explained.
“I’ll come with you,” Jack offered.
Mush shrugged. It wasn’t like there was any way to tell him not to come. Mush would have preferred to spend some time alone with Kid Blink, but it would be fine.
They walked the seven blocks back to the lodging house in silence.
Or rather, Mush walked in silence while Jack rambled on about Santa Fe. It was nothing he hadn’t heard before, so Mush mostly tuned it out, making sure to nod and smile in all the right places. Instead, his mind was mainly preoccupied with worries about Blink, as it always was on the days when Blink announced he wasn’t selling. The rules of their agreement said no questions asked, but that didn’t mean the questions weren’t swirling around in Mush’s head.
Had Blink been binding his chest up too tight again? Or was it his head this time? Once, Blink had said it felt like he had a swarm of bees buzzing around inside his brain. Race had called him Kid Buzz for a week, until Blink had gotten fed up and punched him. Not hard, but enough to communicate that he was crossing a line.
Jack was still prattling on as they reached the lodging house, but he broke off to greet Mr. Kloppman at the front desk.
“There’s a boy here for you, Jack,” Kloppman said.
Jack looked over his shoulder, eyes widening slightly, before the obvious conclusion must have occurred to him and the fear in his face changed to joy, a grin spreading across his face. He dashed up the stairs.
Mush smiled before following him up.
“Thanks, Mr. K!” he called over his shoulder.
He made it to the top of the stairs just in time to see David Jacobs punch Kid Blink in the face.
--
For a moment, Jack Kelly couldn’t process what he was seeing. He had seen David get violent before. exactly once, when he’d been protecting Jack himself at the rally. He’d never expected to see that sort of righteous fury directed at Blink.
Then, Blink started laughing, and David began sputtering apologies.
“I’m so sorry!”
David looked like he wasn’t sure what to do with his hands, caught between reaching out for Blink and pulling away.
“I told you to punch me,” Blink pointed out.
“I thought you were going to… move… or something!” David replied, a note of hysteria in his voice.
“What’s going on here?” Jack asked.
“I’m teaching him how to throw a punch, Jack,” Blink explained cheerfully. He looked behind Jack and grinned. “Heya, Mush!”
“You okay, Blink?” Mush asked.
Blink shrugged. “Dave don’t hit that hard. I might have a bruise for a day or two, but it’s fine.”
David looked a bit relieved, but Jack could tell he was still uneasy. He approached David, resting a hand on his arm.
“Why don’t we go talk up on the roof?”
David nodded. Jack guided him to the ladder, pausing as David climbed up to look back at Blink and Mush. The two were already deep in conversation, hands clasped and heads nearly touching. For a moment, Jack envied them.
Then, he turned away and climbed up the ladder after David.
David was sitting by the edge of the roof when Jack made it up, looking down at the street below.
“You doing okay?” Jack asked quietly as he came up behind him.
“I don’t know,” David admitted. “I don’t like hurting people.”
“Blink can take it,” Jack said. “One measly punch ain’t the worst he’s ever had to put up with.”
“I still feel bad,” David said.
Jack smiled and sat down next to him. Their knees just barely touched.
“I know. That’s one of the things I like about you.”
David looked at him. “What? That I’m weak and scared of violence?”
“That you don’t want to hurt people,” Jack clarified.
He’d known too many people who enjoyed the feeling of their fists connecting with someone smaller than them.
“You should learn to defend yourself though,” he said.
David looked less than pleased, but Jack could still remember the terror that had seized him when the Delanceys went after the Jacobs kids. He was sometimes haunted by the thought of how differently things might have gone if he hadn’t been close enough to hear Sarah’s screams. If David was going to continue trying to change the world, Jack wanted him to be able to protect himself.
“I won’t be there to protect you every time,” Jack pointed out.
He could see David’s mind flashing back to that same moment. While Jack knew David would always be willing to put himself on the line for a cause he believed in, Jack also knew that wasn’t how things worked. If Pulitzer had taught him anything, it was that. The men on top would do anything to stay there. And they could get away with it.
Jack reached for David’s hand.
“Lesson number one. How to make a fist.”
--
“You know, I don’t think getting punched is supposed to be part of teaching someone how to throw a punch.”
“I wasn’t trying to get punched,” Blink pointed out sulkily. “I was gonna duck.”
“And you did such a good job of that,” Mush said.
“He was so reluctant! I didn’t expect him to actually put any effort into it.”
Mush sighed.
“Are you doing okay?” he asked, and Blink knew he wasn’t talking about any injuries he might have obtained from David Jacobs’ unexpected determination.
“I’ll be okay,” Blink promised. “My head’s a bit more rattled than I’d like, but it’ll calm down. It always does.”
He tried to sound more confident than he felt, but Mush still looked worried.
“I’ll be fine to sell tomorrow,” he said.
Mush nodded.
“I know you will.”
Blink grinned and threw an arm around Mush’s shoulder.
“Maybe I’ll even outsell you.”
Finally, Mush smiled.

I actually have a lot of feelings about a Newsies Hogwarts AU and now you’re all gonna hear them
Jack
Gryffindor
while he has some traits from all the houses, Gryffindor is where he ended up
He’s loyal, definitely
Also Ambitious, he knows what he wants out of life and isn’t scared to chase it
He’s very creative, and not dumb, either
But he also isn’t blindly loyal, he knows how to realize when his loyalty was misplaced, and he isn’t scared to admit it
He isn’t scared to chase his dreams, but he refuses to use people as a ladder. He won’t manipulate people into giving him what he wants, he’ll climb up through hard work and his own abilities
His creativity almost put him in Ravenclaw, it’s one of his most defining characteristics, but ultimately he was placed in Gryffindor for his combination of characteristics that make him a strong, loyal friend and leader
Katherine
Slytherin
She so smart, and so ambitious
Like Jack, she knows exactly what she wants out of life, and like Jack, she’s willing to fight for it
Unlike Jack, she considers persuasion just as viable of an option as work, as long as work is a part of it
She’s persuasive, not manipulative, and she uses it to her advantage
Even though people tell her that her ambitions are unrealistic, she never stops fighting for them
When she makes a friend, it’s ride or die. You mess with her friends, she’s out for you. Whether it’s a cleverly designed hex or a well though out, though quick, insult, she’ll make sure you regret messing with her friends
She one of those people who can tell right away what kind of person someone is. Even if they act smooth and nice, if they aren’t she knows.
People who know her know that she feels deeply and that she cares a lot about everything, people who don’t will see a cool, put together, ambitious girl with very few close friends
Davey
Ravenclaw
Smart, organized, put together, logical
When faced with a problem, he sits and thinks it through until he comes up with a smart way to deal with it, whereas people like Jack take the first course of action that seems like it might work. Davey doesn’t act unless he’s sure it will work.
He has many revolutionary thoughts, but to him they just seem logical. (Canon: They don’t appreciate the work we do, so we need to show them how much we do and how much they need us. To show them, we’ll stop working)
Once he commits to something, he sees it through.
The results are more interesting to him than any other part of an experiment, though not to the extent of believing “the ends justify the means” philosophy
He looks at life as a puzzle to be solved, everything has a logical answer and if you try hard enough, things will work out somehow
When he’s faced with an instance of that not working, he’ll commit to helping whoever needs him to, and he won’t give up until he has
Race
Gryffindor
My reasoning here is mostly that if Oliver Wood, Lee Jordan, and Fred and George Weasley are Gryffindor, then Race is, as he is very similar to them
He has Wood’s complete and total determination. The way Wood is with Quidditch is how Race is with anything he cares about.
He has Lee Jordans humor that combines with his strong morals. The same way Lee becomes a reporter on Potterwatch, Race will easily become a spokesman for the things he believes in as soon as he leaves school. His moral code is part of him, and it leads to many of his choices.
And Fred and George’s sense of humor that couples with their strong loyalty to their family pride and friends, Race has that. Will he happily prank somebody? Yes. But would he purposefully hurt anyone innocent? No. Would he fight for anyone he cares about? In a split second.
Race is a Gryffindor because of his combination of traits, not because of any singular one, like Jack is.
Spot
Slytherin
He’s cunning, ambitious, smart, ready to climb up to the place he belongs in the world
He refuses to be lowered below where he stands, but he uses any power he has to help those lower than him, rather than using it to put them down
He’s worked hard to get where he is, and he won’t give up for anything
Like Katherine, once you get to know him he’s a loyal, caring person
Unlike Katherine, if you don’t know him he comes off as a standoffish asshole who refuses to interact with people.
His moral code dictates everything he does, and it’s strongly defined by the things he’s gone through
If he sees somebody picking on a first year, he will defend the kid without a second thought, even if it means alienating somebody he’d previously considered an acquaintance. Picking on a helpless kid is not something he’ll let happen if he can help it.
He knows exactly what he wants out of life, and he’ll do what it takes to get there.
Crutchie
Hufflepuff
Extremely loyal, almost to the point of it being a fault
Unlike Jack, his loyalty tends to be blind until there’s some kind of absolute evidence that somebody can’t be trusted
He would be friends with people like the Delanceys, even with everybody else telling him he shouldn’t be, as he insists on seeing the good in everyone
He’s also a very caring, loving person. He adopts the owls with broken wings, the things people don’t want because they see them as worthless. He sees himself in the cast aside objects, people, and animals, although he would never admit it.
Being friends with people like Jack makes him feel wanted, and even though it’s again something he would never admit, he sometimes thinks people like Jack are only friends with him because he’s always happy
While he does his absolute best to always be optimistic, he isn’t as happy go lucky as he would see.
He’s a people person, most of the time, and adores being around his friends. But when he’s having a bad day, when he doubts himself and his friendships, he needs to be alone. He has a bunch of little cactuses that are attached to his bed, and he closes his curtain and watches his cactuses grow
Jack loves him to death, and even after Jack is the one to ask Crutchie out, Crutchie still sometimes doubts that somebody like Jack could really care about somebody like him. He knows Jack does, but sometimes he almost convinces himself he doesn’t.
