Today's #TiaraTuesday post will require you to be on your toes. You might even want to get a piece of paper to track the twists and turns in ownership. Let's dig in.. * If you were a grand duchess in Russian when the Romanovs ruled, one thing you could count on was receiving a kokoshnik-style diamond fringe tiara as part of your trousseau when you married. Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna was no exception. A stern looking woman, she married the second of Queen Victoria's sons (Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (and later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha)) and received the tiara, consisting of large vertical sections set with cushion shaped diamonds with pear shaped stones at the tips, alternating with smaller colette set sections, graduating from the center.. * Maria took the tiara with her as she moved to England, of course. Her mother-in-law wasn't too fond of Maria's flagrant display of her Russian jewels and heritage (she WAS marrying in to the very powerful British royal family, after all). But apparently Maria was at least generous - she wore her tiara in an official portrait, and to several official royal event and then even let her daughter Marie (the second photo on the bottom) wear it for a portrait by Philip de Laszlo, painted in 1936. Upon Maria's death in 1920, her youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, affectionally known as Baby Bee, inherited the tiara (we're wondering if Marie was ticked off about that).. * But that was short-lived. Bee wore it during her marriage, where she was a Spanish infanta and Duchess of Galliera. But The Spanish Civil War meant exile and hardships, so Bee decided to sell the Fringe to fund a hospital for wounded soldiers. Luckily, Bee's niece, Queen Maria of Yugoslavia, was an auction attendee and purchased the tiara (talk about keeping it in the family).. * But as with the Spanish monarchy, there was trouble ahead. Maria's husband was assassinated and she and her son, King Peter II, were forced into exile. Living as a royal in exile ain't cheap. In 1960 Maria decided to sell and the tiara was auctioned by Sotheby's London to to dealer Levy-Cohen and hasn't been seen since.. * You have it don't you? 😉 (at Buckingham Palace, London) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs8SOAtBR8D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=11ryvyxcunyn4
