Toyota venza hybrid
Tumblr media
In terms of cargo space, every 2023 Venza offers 28.8 cubic feet of carrying space behind the second row and 55.1 cubic feet total with the rear seatbacks folded. Regardless of the trim level, sound-absorbing insulation and body sealing material have been placed throughout Venza’s structure to help reduce unwanted cabin noise. In addition to the new Nightshade Edition, the 2023 Toyota Venza is available in three other trim levels: LE, XLE, and Limited. That would make the Venza superior to its contemporaries like the Honda Passport, but unlike the V6-equipped Passport that can tow 5,000 lbs., the Venza is not rated for towing, so keep this in mind if you plan on hauling toys or heavy gear. If you heed your right foot, the Venza has no trouble achieving nearly 40 mpg combined. It’s not the quickest of the lot, but the Venza is not about sporty driving. You might think 219 horsepower is insufficient for a relatively large and hefty hybrid crossover, and you are right. Toyota claims the Venza can travel in front-wheel drive (100:0 front-rear torque distribution) at a constant speed, while the system can shift to 20:80 over slippery terrain. The drivetrain works seamlessly and varies the torque distribution depending on existing road conditions. There are two electric motors in the front and one in the back, effectively supplying the Venza with all-wheel grip via Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand AWD. The 2023 Toyota Venza remains motivated by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and three electric motors that collectively develop 219 horsepower. Efficient Hybrid Powertrain & All-Wheel Drive The Venza Nightshade Edition is available in Ruby Flare Pearl, Celestial Black, or Wind Chill Pearl paint. It also has an electrochromic sunshade that works like transition lenses. Unlike ordinary glass roofs, Star Gaze has a glass that switches between transparent and frost at your behest. Optional for the Nightshade is Toyota’s Star Gaze Panoramic Roof. It also gets LED fog lights (now standard in the base Venza LE), 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels, and black badging. Standard fare for the Nightshade Edition is an acrylic front grille trim, smoked chrome moldings, and blacked-out trim for the mirror caps, door handles, rocker panels, roof rails, and sharkfin antenna. The Venza is now available with the Nightshade Edition Package based on the mid-level XLE trim. The 2023 Toyota Venza remains part of the second-gen variant that resurfaced in 2021. But if all you want is a decent crossover with good fuel economy, the 2023 Venza is worth considering. Still, the 2023 Venza does have its fair share of drawbacks, mainly the tiny cargo area (courtesy of the hybrid-electric components) and sparse interior room. In other words, the new Venza is a RAV4 hybrid wrapped in a Lexus-esque body and infused with a more premium vibe and more desirable features than a comparable RAV4, like that groovy electrochromic glass roof. As usual, the Venza scores high in fuel economy with its standard hybrid powertrain derived from the Toyota RAV4. The 2023 Toyota Venza is the latest to receive the Nightshade Editon package that adds dark styling elements to Toyota’s hybrid SUV. Some features will be upgraded in the Venza over the RAV4 Hybrid as well, for instance the latter comes standard with a 7” infotainment display with an available 8” upgrade, where as the new Venza will offer a standard 8” screen and an available 12.4” enhancement.2023 Toyota Venza: Pricing & Availability Although not pictured in the table, the Venza is 5.7 inches longer than the RAV4 Hybrid, but 1.1 inches shorter. Although the Toyota Venza belongs to the larger segment, the RAV4 Hybrid actually offers just a little bit more space to fill with whatever you need to bring along with you. However, its Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system does differ slightly in the way that it works, as it can send up to 80% of power to the rear wheels when necessary, while the RAV4 Hybrid’s system can only send up to 50%.Īnother difference comes in terms of space. That’s why each vehicle is capable of generating the same amount of horsepower, and why Toyota is estimating it will achieve the same combined fuel economy. Both hybrid crossovers are built on the TNGA-K platform so that they deliver a refined driving experience, but they’re also underpinned by the same powertrain, the Toyota Hybrid System II. As you can tell from the table above, the two crossover utility vehicles are actually quite similar to one another.

Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle and Kia Carnival SX: Minivans are BACK Part 2
Words and Photos By Michael Hozjan
Kia Carnival SX:
Take a look at the remaining players in the minivan market; you’ve got the Toyota Sienna, Honda’s Odyssey, Chrysler’s Grand Caravan and last week’s subject, the Pacifica. On the surface they all look fairly alike. Sure there might be an accent line here or there in an attempt to differentiate them, but squint your eyes and the tapered nose and the silhouettes are similar - cute and soft. Chrysler changed the front-end treatment on this year’s Pacifica to give it a more rugged look with an SUV-like grille.
Tumblr media
Now take a look at Kia’s latest venture. In the last couple of years Kia’s designers have knocked more than one model out of the ballpark and this year they’ve added muscular looks to a minivan. Yes Kia refers to it as an MPV for multi-purpose vehicle (how they’re getting away with using Mazda’s old moniker I have no idea). I’m pretty sure that you won’t think soccer mom when you see the Carnival. With large 19” blacked out aluminum wheels, a long square snout highlighted by lights fading into the chrome grill and aggressive looking vents on the front corners, this thing screams business.
Dollars
While design may or may not make or break a sale it is a major influence in the final decision, but the Carnival has another ace up its sleeve and that is its price.
Over the years I’ve repeatedly stated that Kias offer more bang for the buck and the Carnival is no exception. The base model, the LX, starts out at $36,760 and my top of the line tester came in at $50,560. Compare that to the base Pacifica at $45,765 and the Pinnacle at $63,265 or Toyota’s Sienna LE front wheel drive at $42,349 and the all-wheel-drive Limited at $60,824 and Honda’s base Odyssey at $45,590 and their top dog the touring at $56,790 and the Kia looks sweeter and sweeter.
Tumblr media
Five trim levels make up the Carnival line up; LX, LX+, EX, EX+ and SX. The base model gives you a heated windshield, rear parking sensors as well as advanced forward collision avoidance and lane follow. Stepping up to the LX+ ($40,260) add wireless phone charging, power sliding doors and liftgate, smart key and multi-zone climate controls.  The $44 grand EX adds a couple more driver assists, LED taillights and 19” wheels, plus a smartphone app that allows you to remotely start, lock, unlock the truck. At $47,560 the EX+ gives you a 12.3” multimedia screen, like size digital instrument cluster a surround view monitor as well as LED head and fog lights. The king of the line up, the $50,560 SX, comes with dual sunroofs, Bose premium audio system, leather seating passenger view monitor.
And Sense
We obviously buy minivans to move people and cargo and this is where the two subjects get interesting. Starting at the back I was surprised to learn that the Kia has the upper hand in space with the third row in place, 40.2 cu.ft. to the Pacifica’s 32.3 cu.ft. My girlfriend loved the Pacifica’s clean deep well behind the third row to keep the groceries in place. The Kia’s looked too industrial with its exposed hinges.
Tumblr media
Accessing the third row is best done if you slide the second row lounge chairs inboard. Yes you read that right, not only do they move from front to back but also left to right.
Tumblr media
Folding the third row is a snap with the Chrysler with switches mounted on the back pillar to activate the various motors, the Kia takes some manual force – but will not break down. With the rear seats folded into their respective cubbyholes, the Kia stows 86.9 cu.ft. of gear to the Pacifica’s 87.5. My Kia came with the fabulous, executive alluring, lounge chairs. Yes they are every bit as comfortable as they look.  While they add credence to the company limo I was talking about last week, they do not fold out of the way. So storage is confined to that same old 86.9 cu.ft. While the Pinnacle does not have second row stow and go seats, (lesser Pacificas do) the second row does fold up against the front buckets and can be removed – heavy as they are – to give you enough room to carry a 4x8 foot sheet of plywood in the 165 cu.ft. cargo bay. Like the Pacifica the lesser trim levels of the Carnival (the LX through to EX+) have removable second row seats expanding the cargo volume to 168 cu.ft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and sunshades for the back rows make this a desirable cabin whether you’re shuttling your clients to the airport or moving the in-laws back home. If you’re counting, there are nine USB ports dotting the cabin and there's a handy 12-volt outlet in the rear.
Tumblr media
Above: Second row lounge chairs slide in for easier access to third row or or out to carry longer items.
Behind the wheel
The front buckets are comfortable and not only look, but feel like they came out of a sports sedan with excellent bolstering on the seat backs. Adding to the cockpit’s comfort is the center console’s wide armrest incorporating drink cubbies and a wireless charging tray,
Tumblr media
A modern looking dash is a change from the usual fluff and the infotainment centre looks spectacular, but the audio system works backwards in all of my recent Kia encounters. Example; going up the sat radio stations from 6 to say 18 you’d think you would have to press the steering wheel nub up, but no, you have to go down?!? What bicycle riding genius thought of this! Worse yet, the audio system does not let you tailor the order to your taste but numerically. You say you’ll get used to it…I shouldn’t have to. It’s called intuitive touch. Ok I’ve vented.
Tumblr media
The Carnival comes with one power package, a class leading 3.5L, 290 horsepower, V6 with 262 lb.-ft. of torque connected to a smooth shifting non-CVT, 8-speed automatic that can tow 3,500 lbs. Unfortunately there’s no all-wheel-drive package available - yet. While you won’t be setting any breakneck speeds even if you use the Sport mode, it does make this minivan, um, corporate hauler, feel quicker than its competitors sending you to 100kph in just over 7 seconds. I kept mine in Eco mode to see what kind of fuel consumption I could get and was still impressed with its acceleration. I mustered an impressive 9.4L/100 kilometers. The handling is well balanced and predictable with no brake fade.
Tumblr media
Above: No attention to detail is spared.
More a boardroom than a minivan cabin, the Carnival’s interior is serenely quite. The multi-link rear suspension soaks up road irregularities and sends barely a shudder through the greenhouse. I had to pick up over a dozen cinder blocks while my truck was out for a wheel alignment and the Kia surprised me with its smooth ride even under a heavy load, the back end never bottomed out. Kudos.
The Verdict
There’s a lot to like about the Carnival, from the old school automatic transmission to the smooth revving V6. As much as I love the lounge chairs that look like they’ve been pillaged from a Maybach, for my personal priorities I’d go for the regular, removable second row seats. Call me crazy but I’d love to see a sportier handling package made available to go with the macho design.
Tumblr media
Will the Carnival steal some of the market share away from SUVs? Hard to say, with its easier access to the third row, lower lift over and better maneuverability than an SUV it makes sense, one thing is certain it’ll give Toyota, Honda and Chrysler a run for their money.

2021 Nissan Qashqai Midnight Edition
Box-office popularity and critical acclaim don’t always align. Sometimes the biggest cinematic hits fall foul of the critics, leaving hearts of the masses and bums on seats to outweigh the minds of a learned few. Ticket sales reign supreme and it’s deemed a success.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Nissan Qashqai has, for the most part, lived up to this scenario since its inception (previously branded Dualis Down Under). While it doesn’t top the VFACTS sales charts and it’s unlikely to win a group comparison test, the Qashqai is a consistent seller. Tied to a strong brand, the Qashqai offers families big value from their small SUV.
However, it’s been around a while – since 2014, in fact. So, to keep interest high and customers walking back into post-Covid showrooms, Nissan has delved into the gloss-black-paint reserves to create the Midnight Edition.
What does it cost to own?
The Qashqai is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, which is pretty standard within the industry these days. Servicing is every 12 months or 10,000km (whichever comes first), but you can also opt for a capped-price servicing plan that runs for 12 years/120,000km. Five years of roadside assistance is available.
What’s the exterior like?
In PR-speak, “Nissan invites you to own the night”… what that translates to is a heap of black accents being added to the known styling. And to be fair, it does the trick, with the Midnight Edition offering meaningful flair to keep the Qashqai ageing gracefully. For a known design, the special edition adds an on-road presence.
This is created via a Gloss Black V-motion grille, while the front and rear bumper blades and roof rails gain the same treatment. Darkened LED head (adaptive) and taillights feature, too, as well as body-coloured mouldings. The auto-folding wing mirrors gain gloss black, as do the 19-inch alloy wheels.
There are five exterior colours to choose from and include Vivid Blue, Ivory Pearl, Gun Metallic, Magnetic Red and Pearl Black.
What’s the interior like?
Yes, you guessed it, the black theme continues inside, too. And in a mind-bending juxtaposition, brightens up the tried and tested Qashqai design in line with the exterior. Both gloss and brushed black accents abound, including a black roof headliner, as well as part leather/Alcantara seats and illuminated kick plates.
The benefit of the larger dimensions against the class norm (the Qashqai is 4394mm long, 1086mm wide, 1595mm tall and with a 2646mm wheelbase) is a spacious cabin. All five occupants enjoy generous head, leg and toe room front to back, with the back pews gaining a central armrest with cup holders when four-up.
Despite its almost range-topping status, the Midnight Edition misses out on heated front seats and power adjustment (even for the driver), as well as digital dual-zone climate control. Yet, overall, the styling tweaks give the ergonomically sound cabin a bit of a second wind. The new steering wheel is also a highlight, feeling nice in hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s the infotainment like?
Updated for the current-gen model, the Qashqai gains a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen to handle the infotainment. It’s on the small side, meaning you have to be precise with your inputs and the graphics are dated. Still, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is DAB+ digital radio, which plays through a six-speaker audio system. The instrument cluster gains a 4.2-inch screen for features like the digital speedo.
Something left wanting, and a sign of the Qashqai’s 2014 ilk, is a lack of USB and USB-C ports. There are none in the back, and just a single port is hidden in the centre storage bin. And there’s no wireless charging, either. The upcoming third generation can’t arrive soon enough.
What is the storage like?
Given its ‘small’ SUV category designation, the Qashqai offers space some of the competition can’t match. The boot is 430 litres, extending to 1598 litres with the 60/40-split rear seats folded. There is a bit of a step up from the boot floor when the rear seats are stowed, however, the load bay is flat and the lip isn’t too intrusive when heaving in weighty/bulky items.
The centre console is endowed with a cavernous storage compartment and further bolstered by numerous provisions for cups, bottles, keys, wallets and sunglasses. Basically, there are a plethora of places to put a family’s worth of items.
What engines are available?
You can have any engine you want, as long as it’s a naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Its relatively large capacity does its best to mask a lack of torque compared to smaller, turbocharged units, with the 2.0-litre unit producing 200Nm. Combined with 106kW of power, the Midnight Edition offers ‘enough’ grunt to cope with the 1392kg kerb weight and fulfil its intended use… just.
Within city limits, the Qashqai operates amicably and the CVT is one of the better units on the market. Where it becomes strained is open-road overtaking, especially given power and torque are developed high in the rev range (6000 and 4400rpm respectively). The 2.0-litre four-pot sounds strained, too, as the CVT perches the tacho needle high in the rev range.
Tumblr media
What about the fuel economy?
Officially the Qashqai Midnight Edition is rated at 6.9L/100km on a combined cycle. However, throughout testing the trip computer returned eights, even when pushing the oddly placed Eco mode button for frugal driving. It’s a shame some of the Nissan/Renault alliance turbo petrol and diesel engines offered in other markets aren’t available here.
What’s it like to drive?
All the controls are light, progressive and easy to use for the daily grind and family hauling. Driven within these parameters the Midnight Edition ticks boxes by being easy to live with. The brakes are strong and progressive, the steering is light for city car parks and the stepped-ratio CVT mimics a conventional torque-converter automatic with six ratios for a ‘manual mode’. The suspension tune leans towards the stiff side. However, the dampers offer enough control on the rebound to prevent pogoing. Still, overall, it’s a bit too firm to be branded cosseting.
A somewhat interesting move is the fitment of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres (225/45 front to rear) to the test car. It’s a lot of rubber for a humble SUV, especially given its usual performance-based applications. And while the sticky hoops offer the safety of heightened grip levels, it’s almost too much as the body struggles to match their competence, exacerbating the Qashqai’s roll. There’s also noticeable kickback and rack rattle through the steering wheel on poor surfaces.
Tumblr media
How safe is the Qashqai?
The Qashqai range receives a five-star ANCAP safety rating, but it’s worth keeping in mind the score is carried over from the 2017 model year. Nissan Intelligent mobility active-safety includes blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert 360-degree surround-view camera with parking sensors and intelligent driver alert. ISOFIX is fitted to the two outboard rear seats.
Sadly, given the price point, active cruise control, pedestrian/cyclist detection and lane-keeping with steering intervention aren’t standard, you have to step up to the Ti for that.
What are the alternatives?
Many. So many, in fact, it’s hard to list them all, so here are some of the key combatants. The never-say-die Mitsubishi ASX which, despite its age, keeps brewing a sales storm. In terms of racking up sales accolades, it’s the Lewis Hamilton of the small SUV segment. Like the Qashqai, it offers a lot of physical car for the monetary outlay.
Others to consider are the not-so-small Kia Seltos, dynamically talented Toyota C-HR, pragmatic Honda HR-V and the ‘funky’ Hyundai Kona. The Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Roc offer Euro quality, while the Mazda CX-30 pairs dynamics with a premium cabin. The choice is seemingly endless in this burgeoning class.
The bottom line
The Qashqai is a classic case of ‘the more you spend, the less sense it makes. While the Midnight Edition jazzes things up a bit, there really isn’t much point extending into this price bracket. The metal-for-money equation that Nissan’s SUV does so well is no longer in its favour. At $28,290 (manual) and $30,290 (auto), the entry-level ST is about all the Qashqai you’ll ever need. The superior space and easy-to-live-with nature make it appealing to the masses.
So, while the Midnight Edition conjures visual delight and, somewhat out of character, offers grippy performance-orientated rubber, it isn’t the variant to buy. It’s also worth keeping in mind that a new Qashqai is, we’re told, around the corner.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is predictably top-notch

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is predictably top-notch
There’s a full-width LED running light hidden between the headlights. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like a unibrow at night.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
We have no choice but to warn you that this entire review is one big tease. The pair of 2022 Volkswagen GTIs we tested have German front license plates, a forewarning of sorts, since the eighth-gen GTI is still months away from going on sale in the US, along with its higher-performance sibling, the Golf R. If you can keep it in your pants, though, the reward will be worth it, because VW’s latest hot hatch is such a delight.
Like
Torquey turbo four-pot
Sharp handling
Plaid!
Don’t Like
Iffy front-end styling
Dumb new cup holders
The Volkswagen Golf is not a car of radical reinvention, and the 2022 GTI’s style more than reinforces that notion. From the rear, the hatchback looks more like a refreshed seventh-gen, with some more polygonal taillights and some additional bumper creases. Only forward of the A-pillars do you begin to see some true newness. But I’m still not fully sold on the sloping-brow front end, which gives the car a dose of Geico caveman aesthetic. The full-width running lights and quintuple-hexagon fog lights are cool additions, though. The 19-inch alloy wheels look great, too, and while they’re pretty large for a compact car, they don’t look like caricatures, leaving more than enough space for some sidewall meat.
There’s more revolution than evolution inside, and said revolution clearly came for the buttons, because they’re almost all gone. Touch-sensitive panels now cover the steering wheel and dashboard, eliminating nearly every piece of physical switchgear. Provided you’re cool with that, it makes for a clean, uncluttered look. While the general shape of the dashboard has changed, the interior feels just about as roomy as it did before, with ample glass making way for ample sunshine and strong visibility from all sides. The GTI’s plaid seats are back and just as comfortable and supportive as ever; leather is overrated, folks.
Other parts of the interior are a little hit or miss. While the center console’s armrest storage is still small, VW straight-up made the cup holders worse. Now, two drinks are relegated to this weird indentation where a small button pops out a spring-loaded cup holder for smaller-diameter beverages. The problem, though, comes with trying to fit a second drink in there; while it’s possible, anything larger than the smallest Red Bull can is going to smash uncomfortably against the drink next to it, which can spell trouble. Some of the plastics feel flimsier than on its predecessor. Take the “phone house” ahead of the shifter, for example; while we love that it holds a phone in place and out of view, its lid feels like it’s always about 3 seconds from snapping off. The use of piano-black trim on every surface meant for touching means fingerprints will almost always be visible.
Those touch-sensitive bits can prove tricky in other ways. The GTI’s steering wheel buttons are clicky, but they’re also capable of working by a light touch alone, so you can drag your finger along the volume slider and make larger adjustments more quickly. However, accuracy is not great, so your eardrums might get more than they bargained for. Also, VW didn’t think to illuminate the volume and temperature sliders at the bottom of the screen, making any adjustments way more frustrating at night.
If you’ve driven any other recent GTI, the eighth-gen model will feel like second nature.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
VW’s latest infotainment system is a solid step forward, with a fresh aesthetic and an admirable boot time when cold. There’s a home screen that can display multiple types of information at once, and a quick tap of the home button on the left side of the screen makes jumping between pages sufficiently easy. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are nice touches, especially if you’ve been lagging on updating your phone cords, since the 2022 GTI is a USB-C-only affair. The gauge cluster is a screen, now, too, carrying some fun graphics while allowing for a great degree of customizability. An available HUD brings relevant information much closer to my eyes, although we wouldn’t exactly call it necessary given how well the gauges convey things.
All those cares melt away the second you start driving the 2022 VW GTI in earnest. High-quality caning has always been at the heart of the GTI experience, and the eighth-gen car makes no major alterations in that regard. It’s more fun than some sports cars costing twice as much, and it all starts with the GTI’s turbo four-cylinder gas engine, which in its latest iteration produces 242 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, all of which is routed to the front wheels through a standard limited-slip differential and either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Using a light foot and short-shifting around town returns smooth, gradual forward motion, but dig a little deeper into the pedal throw and the 2.0-liter EA888 will throw an absolute wall of torque at you, pushing the hatch forward with surprising haste. The clutch pedal is nicely weighted and has a definitive bite point, making for smooth starts and shifts, and the lever itself offers just the right amount of notch as it slinks between gates.
The EA888 might not look like much from a distance, but there’s a mountain of torque emanating from under that engine cover.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
As for the DSG-equipped car we tested in California, it’s more proof that Volkswagen’s dual-clutch unit is one of the best. Yes, it still has a tendency to jerkily engage first gear when starting off, but from that point on, shifts are seamless and quick. The steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters themselves are pretty small, but they offer instant response. If paddles aren’t your thing, you’ll be happy to know the DSG ‘box will hold gears as long as you want in Sport mode, with the cutest little farty brapp with each upshift.
The GTI is positively sublime in the switchbacks. Adaptive dampers eliminate any hint of body roll without making the ride so stiff as to be annoying, and the mode switch also adds a nice bit of weight to the electric power steering. Combined with the aforementioned limited-slip diff, the new GTI is noticeably more agile while cornering. The seventh-gen car was no slouch while carving through California canyons, but the new car is simply more eager to dive into hairpins and offers better traction on corner exit. Honestly, the new GTI is closer to last-gen Golf R levels of on-road excitement.
Yet, when it’s time to chill, rolling in Comfort almost feels like a different car entirely. The stiff damping ceding to a smoothness that dispatches annoying bumps and jostles with very little movement transferring to the occupants; over Michigan potholes and California highway expansion joints, the GTI is a doll. Cabin isolation feels a step above its predecessor, too. In fact, the whole shebang feels significantly more adult without losing sight of the GTI’s inherent playful nature. If there’s one formula that we’re happy to see over and over again with little adjustment, it’s this one.
We’re so far away from the 2022 GTI’s US launch that the EPA has not yet released fuel-economy figures, but that’s what the trip computer is for. Over a couple hundred miles of mixed city and highway, we see around 26 or 27 mpg, which is what the feds rate the outgoing GTI in combined use. Longer stretches of freeway push the needle north of 30 mpg, provided you stop glomming on the throttle just to feel the torque do its thing.
The GTI’s makeover doesn’t mess with that handsome shape.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Even with some newfound power and features — and, assumingly, the slightly higher price tag to match — the GTI’s competition remains about the same as usual. The Honda Civic Si is due to enter a new generation in the near future, and while it’s still available in two body styles (coupe and sedan), it’s not as fun to drive as the GTI. The Hyundai Veloster N gives the VW a pretty solid run for its money, but it’s not available as a true five-door and its cabin simply isn’t as nice. If you want an interior more closely resembling a luxury car, you can step it up with the Mazda3 Turbo, which isn’t a performance variant per se, yet it still moves like one.
The wait will be worth it for the 2022 Volkswagen GTI. The parts that were given a dose of radical reinvention don’t get in the way of the driving experience, which remains as exhilarating and redeeming as ever. There’s a good reason this is the hot hatch by which most are compared, and it doesn’t appear that trend will be changing any time soon.

2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross First Drive: Improved but not Better Than the Competition
Mitsubishi is picking up speed. Not dramatically—think a brisk walk compared to its prior shamble—but the Japanese automaker is on a bit of a roll with its new products. We were duly impressed with the all-new, ground-up redesign of the 2022 Outlander, a three-row SUV that bodes well for the company’s direction. Conversely, the Outlander drive program also slotted us behind the wheel of the refreshed 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a compact SUV that reminds us the brand still has work to do.
That’s not to say the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a bad compact crossover. But the old—and new—Eclipse Cross isn’t at the top of our list of favorite small SUVs. The refreshed model somewhat relegates the old version to memory, but it’s still anchored by a dated interior and lackluster powertrain.
There’s some good, too. After skipping the 2021 model year, the Eclipse Cross returns with Mitsubishi having fixed the prior model’s most glaring visual wart: The rear tailgate ditches the controversial fixed light bar that ran across the rear window and gave the old SUV’s back end a rather ungainly stepped look. The new conventional tailgate is easier on the eyes and easier to see out of, a smoothed design complimenting the slightly revised front fascia featuring new darkened trim.
Physical Changes
More butt, more space. Mitsubishi added 5.5 inches to the Eclipse Cross’s total length via the new front and rear bumpers, equating to a 0.8 cubic-foot bump in cargo capacity behind the second row, and a 1.2-cube boost with the row folded, for totals of 23.4 and 50.1, respectively. Interestingly, Mitsubishi says bulky and unwieldy items should fit better thanks to an 11-percent increase in floor area.
Buyers now have the choice of new contrasting gray upholstery, as opposed to the old model’s black-only cabin. The standard 7.0-inch and optional 8.0-inch infotainment screens aren’t new but are positioned closer to the driver. They ditch the cumbersome touchpad controls on the center console for complete touchscreen operation and a set of traditional volume and tuning knobs.
Mechanically, everything is untouched aside from a moderately reworked suspension setup. Larger shock shafts are present, and bounce/rebound settings are modified to work in conjunction with a more rigid rear cross-member piece. This is all little stuff, but a wallowy, uncontrolled ride was one of the older Eclipse Cross’s biggest letdowns.
Hey, Haven’t We Seen You Before?
Power still comes from a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, good for 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque sent through a CVT in either front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Not bad for a segment that is almost exclusively populated by low-output naturally aspirated engines, especially regarding the Toyota CH-R and the Honda HR-V.  Around the wide, flat streets of urban Orange County, California, this was more than enough to buzz around with. Our derriere dyno pegs the 0-60-mph run somewhere in the mid-8-second range; it’s nothing special but adequate for at-speed highway merges and careful passes.
The Eclipse Cross didn’t wheeze and keel over when confronted with significant hills; engine thrash was the biggest problem. As we mentioned in our 2022 Outlander drive, the combination of a CVT and a small, loud engine is a recipe for ear-thrumming noise, vibration, and harshness when you put your foot down.
Handling wasn’t ideal, either. There’s a distinct lack of ride composure even when taking sharper corners at low speeds, but not so much to make it significantly worse than the competition; cars like the Toyota CH-R and Subaru CrossTrek aren’t exactly hot-hatches, but their neutral handling retains at least some of the good dynamic traits from their compact car source material. Conversely, ride quality in the Mitsubishi is relatively cushy and well-isolated, admirably soaking up crags and crevasses on surface streets.
Inside Duds
Our loaded SEL model (with range-topping Touring package) was a pleasant enough place to spend time in, though Mitsubishi will be wise to make sure its future ground-up redesigns follow the same path as the new Outlander. There’s nothing glaringly wrong with the Eclipse Cross’s interior, but nothing stands out. Our top-of-the-line model featured requisite niceties like heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. For the most part, it’s a no-fuss get-the-job-done cabin to commute in, with plenty of plastic trim in a variety of piano black, textured, and faux-metal appliques.
Nothing has changed in the backseat accoutrements or the variety of available active safety systems, either. Aside from awkward ingress and egress due to the new Eclipse Cross’s aggressive roofline, there’s a surprising amount of legroom, even behind my seating position adjusted for my 5-foot, 11-inch height. While rear passengers stretch their legs, their rumps will be toasty with available heated seats. As for safety systems, Mitsubishi offers a relatively comprehensive package with blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and forward collision mitigation.
Overall, there’s nothing special or especially notable about the Eclipse Cross, but it’s a compact crossover that starts at a low $24,590 and maxes out at the $34,670 waterline. If you liked the outgoing Eclipse Cross, the new version should be right up your alley, and if not, it’s worth checking out for its new features and relatively budget pricing. With the new Outlander being the real story right now when it comes to Mitsubishi products, we’re interested to see how and if the company continues to improve across the board as it moves deeper into the new decade.
  2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Pros:
Much improved rear-end styling
Remains the most visually dramatic car in its class
Great passenger legroom
Competitively priced
2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Cons:
Loud, lackluster powertrain
Cheap interior materials
So-so fuel economy

2021 Ford Bronco Sport: On Time And On Target As A Capable Off Roader
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/2021-ford-bronco-sport-on-time-and-on-target-as-a-capable-off-roader/
2021 Ford Bronco Sport: On Time And On Target As A Capable Off Roader
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport includes classic Bronco styling cues
The all-new 2021 Ford Bronco was just delayed 3 months, meaning we won’t see it in showrooms before summer of 2021. But the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport pictured here is arriving right on schedule, which means you can buy one. Right now. They’re arriving at dealers as you read this, and my recent experience with the Bronco Sport suggests it not only lives up to Ford’s iconic nameplate, it may be the better option for many buyers.
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is offered in five versions with varying level of premium features
Remember, the upcoming Ford Bronco rides on a traditional body-on-frame platform, which means it’s both stronger and less sophisticated than the unibody platform under the Bronco Sport (and almost every other modern SUV). Enthusiasts will read that sentence as, “Yeah, that’s why the Bronco Sport is inferior — it’s not as durable or capable as the ‘real’ Bronco.” It’s an easy mindset to fall into, especially if you haven’t driven either of them. But I have driven the Bronco Sport, and I can confirm it’s capabilities in demanding off-road circumstances as well as its uncompromised refinement on pavement.
The Bronco Sport has substantial off-road capability
As an off-road enthusiast you may have convinced yourself you need the “real” Bronco’s capabilities, but as a consumer grounded in reality, with real-world daily transportation needs between adventures, the Bronco Sport’s balance of on- and off-road capabilities might be the better option.
The Bronco Sport can be ordered with a fold-out table in the cargo area
Let’s start with the Bronco Sports’ design language, which includes trademark Bronco styling cues like short front and rear overhangs, an upright grille and round headlights. Ford reps told us they basically created a four-door Bronco with a smaller footprint, and when you consider the Bronco Sport’s potential 30-degree approach angle, 33-degree departure angle, and a 20-degree break over angle (depending on trim level and options) it’s fair to say Ford succeeded. These figures are bolstered by standard four-wheel drive on every Bronco Sport, along with a standard roof rack, cargo area tie downs, adjustable liftgate flood lights and a bottle opener in the rear hatch.
Over factory accessories are already available for the Bronco Sport
Ford’s design team emphasized that every Bronco Sport sketch during the development process included outdoor gear scattered around the SUV’s interior and exterior. This approach led to a cargo management system engineered for carrying everything from mountain bikes to climbing gear to canoes and, of course, dogs. The Bronco Sport comes to market with more than 100 factory accessories, and you can be sure the aftermarket will rapidly supplement that number.
A digital display in the gauge cluster offers a wide range of information in the Bronco Sport
Between its exterior design and interior features the Bronco Sport clearly positions itself as a capable adventure vehicle. These features are backed up by a standard 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and an available 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Those displacements may not sound large, but the 3 cylinder engine offers 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. Its turbocharged nature provides a surprising level of power and torque from a standstill and below 60 mph, though at higher speeds the engine can feel a bit winded. The 2.0-liter engine offers 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, with no power issues at any speed.
The G.O.A.T. drive dial offers either five or seven modes for various road surfaces
Both engines are connected to an 8-speed automatic, while Bronco Sports with the 2.0-liter include paddle shifters feature a more advanced 4×4 system. This system offers locking differentials and a transfer case that can send 100 percent of torque to either the front or rear axle. Both engine also offer multiple G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Terrain) driving modes, with 1.5-liter engines offering Normal, ECO, Sport, Slippery and Sand, with 2.0-liter drivetrains adding Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl modes. These modes are set by a dash-mounted knob, coordinating the engine, transmission, braking and 4×4 system for maximum performance.
The Bronco Sport provides a roomy interior with luxury amenities available on higher trim versions
I tested out each of these modes as part of an on- and off-road driving route north of Los Angeles. On pavement, and at speeds up to 70 mph, the new Bronco Sport feels as civilized as any compact SUV, with confident steering, a comfortable ride and minimal wind or road noise. The interior design features straightforward controls and standard safety tech like lane-keeping assist, auto high beams and blind-spot warnings. As an alternative to established models like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Bronco Sport offers a comparable level of performance and refinement. For daily commuter or urban runabout duty it will serve drivers well.
With 8-inches of suspension travel the Bronco Sport climbed over extreme off-road obstacles
Once off pavement the Bronco Sport’s full spectrum of capabilities was quickly apparent. Up to 8 inches of suspension travel and 23 inches of water fording, along with its aggressive approach, departure and breakover angles were put to the test over rock-strewn roads, steep inclines and deep ruts. Both the 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines never faltered in terms of power or torque, and with the G.O.A.T. mode set to either Sand (for 1.5-liter models) or Mud/Ruts (on 2.0-liters) the 4×4 system actively (and confidently) managed traction for each wheel. This included driving “black” level routs, the most difficult trails available in the off-road park where we tested the Bronco Sport.
If you’re wondering whether the new Bronco Sport lives up to its Bronco heritage, stop wondering. it does.
Leather bucket seats are among the premium features offered on the Bronco Sport
How Much Does the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport Cost?
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is offered in five versions. The Base model starts at $26,660 with the 1.5-liter engine, 4×4 drivetrain, 17-inch steel wheels and Ford’s Co-Pilot360 safety system (automatic emergency braking, blind spot information, lane keeping assist and auto high beams), plus Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch display screen. Big Bend is the next step up, starting at $28,160 and adding easy-to-clean cloth bucket seats, automatic climate control, LED fog lights, 17-inch aluminum wheels and SecuriCode Keyless-Entry Pad (so you can leave your keys in the car during adventures).
Fold the rear seats down and the Bronco Sport can carry two mountain bikes
The Bronco Sport in Outer Banks form costs $32,160 and includes leather seats, power front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, remote start, a shadow black roof panel, and a heated steering wheel with audio and cruise control buttons. The Badlands version of Bronco Sport includes the 2.0-liter engine, more advanced 4×4 system with two additional G.O.A.T driving modes, metal skip plates, full off-road suspension (8 inches of travel), 17-inch off-road tires and front tow hooks. Finally, a limited run of 2,000 First Edition Bronco Sports combined the capability of Badlands with the premium features of Outer Banks, including a power moonroof, with a starting price of $38,160.

This Is When Proton X70 Reaching Pakistan AT LAST!
The X70 will be available for sale in 3rd or 4th weeks of December 2020.
> It will be CBU/ import from Malaysia.
> Al-Haj Group is the local partner.
> As per Auto Policy, company will import 100 CBU for launch purposes at subsidized 50% duty structure.
> The company has planned X70 as CBU for three variants for Pakistani market.
> Executive 2WD, Premium 2WD, Premium AWD.
> As of today, there are four dealerships planned and will be operational in the next few weeks.
> 2 in Karachi, 1 in Lahore and 1 in Islamabad.
> The company will add more dealer network soon.
Public Viewing and Expected Price:
> X70 will go on display sometime mid-December 2020 for public viewing.
> Once the company will sell 100 CBU units, it will fulfil further orders, after establishing local CKD assembly.
> Any further import of the same model above 100 units, will attract full duty and that would not be cost-effective.
> June 2021 onwards, a local assembled X70 is planned.
> Means expect a longer wait time, in case you missed the introductory units.
> No idea for the price for the X70, expect it to be around 5 to 6 Million range
> The CBU units will be very well equipped and built, time will tell if same goes for CKD.
> Possible spec sheet for CBU attached. The sheet says Premium 2WD [ right column ], but there will be a Premium AWD for Pakistani market as well. Concentrate under Executive 2WD and Premium 2WD.
> Proton/ Al-Haj MUST make sure that they sell these units on the advertised price, and dealersdon’tt take any advantage and exploit customers for premiums.
> These 100 units will be well equipped and there is due chance, the dealer plays fishy and funky and grab all these units and then try to sell it over black money.
> As a buyer, please stay away from any such unethical business practice/transaction.
Now let’s go over the technicalities of X70. It will be long, so if you are interested, then you must read it.
About Proton X70:
Proton is a national car company of Malaysia. In the past, it has been producing re-badged Suzuki and even Honda models and before than some Mitsubishi models were sold with Proton badge. In fact, Proton started their production with first car almost 36 years ago, based on Mitsubishi Lancer.
Proton Holding company at one time was owner of the Lotus cars. Currently, Geely car company from China, who also owns Sweden’s Volvo, has 49% shares in Proton. Proton has signed a joint venture with Al-Haj group for establishing an assembly line in Karachi for the CKD production of cars.
𝗫𝟳𝟬:
X70 is a C- segment SUV and basically a re-badged Geely Vehicle named” Geely Boyue”. It is famous by some other names depending on the markets. The company introduced it in China back in 2016. It got a face-lift in China and interior, and exterior got a makeover in the process.
The Proton X70 is basically the same Geely product with some minor exterior changes and a right-hand drive instead of Left as in China. It was introduced in Malaysia in early 2019 and imported from China. Proton has started local assembly in Malaysia recently for local supply. In Pakistan, X70 will compete with KIA Sportage as well as theSportage’ss non-identical twin, Hyundai Tucson and MG HS.
Foot Print of Proton X70:
X70 is based on Geely NL Modular platform, which is flexible architecture and can be used by multiple models depending on use. X70 is 4519mm long, 1831 mm wide and 1694 mm high. Wheelbase of 2670 mm while ground clearance is not confirmed but seems around 180 mm.
For understating the size, I will share Sportage dimensions which 4484 mm long, 1855 wide and 1635 mm high while ground clearance is 172mm. So, basically X70 is slightly bigger on outer dimensions comparing Sportage. X70 has a 60 liter fuel tank while Sportage has capacity for 2 extra liters. Sportage has a cargo capacity of 466L while X70 has 512L.
Engine and Transmission:
X70 is available with a 1.8L Turbo Petrol direct injection engine in Malaysia which is around 184hp. Max torque of 300Nm. It comes with a 7-speed DCT. Both transmissions & engine areGreely’ss / Volvo developed engines.
When it comes to Pakistan, there is a piece of surprising news.
The X70 for sale in Pakistan will have a 1.5L Turbo 3 cylinder engine. There will be 7-speed DCT with manual mode, which is also a Volvo and Geely jointly developed unit. The engine will have 174HP & 255 NM of torque.
This engine is Euro 6 compliant and one of the industry best engines. We can understand this from the fact that Volvo, which is premium brand, use the same engine in its one of the model in Europe. Proton is not offering the 1.5T for X70 in the Malaysian market. It is basically for export regions.
Globally, downsizing is the name of the game. BMW, Mercedes and many other brands are making smaller and efficient engines with higher performance levels. When things come to Pakistan, things get complicated. Proton extensively tested the 1.5T in Pakistan and road testing was ongoing for a very long time, driving it from Karachi to the extreme North regions.
The company has collected Driving data, by Protons own engineers. Obviously, they will tune engine for local fuel conditions, and some changes are planned to the exhaust system as well. There is possibility BUT not confirmed Proton require” “Premium fuel”. This is same for the MG HS.
Drivetrain and Other Components:
Disc brakes all around with ABS. McPherson front while a Multi-link rear suspension. Electric power steering, E-brake will be standard. Standard alloy wheels size of 225/60/18 will be for PK Units although In Malaysia even 1″” are offered on Premium model. I am sure Proton will select the right size for local road conditions.
Proton will offer X70 as AWD and FWD for Pakistan. It is interesting to note that Proton is not showing any AWD variant in Malaysian market because of low demand. There will be an Eco and Sport driving modes.
Interior:
As XC70 will be a CBU so, it will carry most of the features and options available in Malaysian vehicle. As the CBU will be specifically made for Pakistan, there is a due chance for the difference in features but at launch expect it to be identical to the overseas model. All three CBU variants for PK will have leather. The Premium version will have even the Nappa leather. The panoramic sunroof will be available on the top of the line Premium variant.
Digital LCD dashboard cluster will be standard on all trims. Steering wheels control, push-button start and welcome lights, power-folding mirrors, day-night rear view mirror are also available. Power windows , power driver adjustable seats which are ventilated too. Dual-zone climate control with rear vents are also standard on all trims which also have air purification system.
LCD and Infotainment:
“Standard LCD touchscreen infotainment system which has cell phone connectivity for music streaming. The infotainment system is GKUI [ Geely Smart Ecosystem infotainment system ] which is a smart voice recognition system, and you can order the vehicle to perform certain functions. Like even changing the climate control settings.
It will be a 4G WIFI capable system with GSM SIM slot, and certain online features can be integrated into the car. Proton link app can be used to remote control particular feature of the vehicle. There will be 8 speakers standard and Premium models will have 8 as well but with amplifier and sub-woofer.
This is a 5 seat vehicle as standard and no option for 2 extra seats to make it 7. However, the second-row seats can be folded down for larger cargo capacity. Power tailgate will be available on all expect base model and with foot sensor on the premium model.
Again, all this is on CBU we are getting as launch and introduction. Let’s hope when Al-Haj assembles it locally, we see all these features carried over.
Exterior of Proton X70:
The base model has halogen headlights with DRL while the upper trims will get LED and those will be adaptive headlights with auto dip and high feature. The car is a based on the Geely Boyue but to give it a Proton face, there is a different grill on the front which is called” infinite weave grill”.
This is inspired by traditional woodwork and carving, which is famous in Malaysia. LED taillights and two exhaust tips through the rear bumper. A standard wiper for rear screen and a spoiler with a stop lamp. Roof rails will be standard.
Safety in Proton X70:
When it comes to safety, this is where X70 will be the champion. Six airbags standard on all trims. ABS, Auto brake hold, Brake Assist, Hill assist, EBD, Traction control will be standard. TPMS / Tire Pressure Monitoring System will also be available.
The premium model will also have “ADA” which is an Advanced Driver Assistance System and a set of active safety features. This will be first of its kind offered by a company on a brand new vehicle in this category. It will consist of lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beam and autonomous braking.
The base model will have a regular reverse camera, but the premium model will have 360 view camera system. The Proton X70 is an Asian NCAP tested vehicle with a 5-star rating.
We can say that X70 will be a much safer vehicle in a test comparing the locally assembled Sportage and Tucson, but again, the X70 is CBU at launch; we will know the real deal on this topic when mass production of CKD starts locally. Time will tell if Al-Haj keeps all those features and equipment on the locally assembled vehicle or cut down on it to be price competitive against the competition.
Pricing of Proton X70:
The 1.5T engine is the first indicator that Protonwant’ss to be price competitive at least at the launch with their introductory CBU. X70 will come with features which the competitor lacks in the segment. I think that Proton will price X70 between 5 to 6 Million range or maybe a little higher.
Comparing the Sportage AWD, which is top of the line model from KIA, the premium X70 might be a little more expensive, but it will come with some exclusive features. Yes, Sportage has worldwide recognition, and it is sold in many markets when compared with X70. But keep in mind that X70 isGeely’ss vehicle with a Proton badge.
It has an engine, transmission which is co-developed with Volvo and is currently in use by Volvo as well. X70 has broken all the sales records in the Malaysian market, and Proton has a hard time completing orders. I think it will be an excellent addition to the market and can give a tough time to Sportage and Tucson or upcoming MG HS.
The sales and marketing strategy, after-sale service, support, customer satisfaction and friendly and welcoming dealer network will only guide and help Proton to succeed. As of now, there is minimal dealership network. Most probably the current FAW dealerships also become sales and service points of Proton although nothing is clear at this time.
A very good product can easily fail if there is no after-sales service. I am sure Proton and Al-Haj know that.
Stay Tuned to Pakwheels for more updates on X70.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is the new compact crossover segment leader

The new Hyundai Tucson is fantastic both to drive and look at.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
Hyundai isn’t falling into the industry-typical habit of making all its new cars look like Russian dolls. From the Sonata to the Palisade to the Elantra, every new Hyundai debut is more interesting than the last. But they’re more than just great pieces of design — these products are well-rounded, too. The 2022 Tucson crossover isn’t just Hyundai’s latest model, it’s the company’s best one yet.
Like
Radical exterior styling
Supercomfortable ride
Impressive interior design
Loads of features and tech
Don’t Like
Tepid four-cylinder engine
Touch controls aren’t for everyone
Crossovers can be cool, too
Like the new Sonata and Elantra, the Tucson will surely be divisive, but I absolutely love it. Easily the most striking part of the design is the Tucson’s face. The wing-shaped “parametric design” front grille has angular inserts and a dark chrome-ish finish, and the LED running lights and turn signals are integrated into the grille, appearing hidden when off. Meanwhile, the main headlights and high beams are in the larger pods in the lower bumper. It’s a distinctive solution and looks awesome, especially at night.

The rest of the Tucson is cool, too. It’s got squared-off wheel arches reminiscent of the Lamborghini Countach — yes, really — and lots of intense character lines and surfacing details. My Tucson’s Amazon Gray paint has tons of metal flake and looks green under direct sunlight, showing off the lines perfectly. The greenhouse is accented by a spearlike chrome strip that gets thicker at the D-pillar, but otherwise there’s not a lot of jewelry. The slash-shaped taillights have a unique signature and are connected by a full-width light bar, and the placement of the Hyundai badge in the rear glass is interesting.
Globally the 2022 Tucson is offered with two different wheelbase lengths, but we only get the longer one in the US. The 2022 model is 6.1 inches longer, 0.6 inch wider and 0.6 inch taller than the outgoing Tucson, and it’s on a 3.4-inch-longer wheelbase. Passenger volume and cargo space are up, too, besting the Toyota RAV4 in both metrics but falling a little short of the Honda CR-V. The rear is especially roomy, with reclining seat backs that easily fold flat and a fold-down armrest with cup holders and storage. The cargo area also has an adjustable load floor with two height levels.
The Tucson gives us Lamborghini Countach vibes.

An interior you need to touch
While more restrained than the exterior, the Tucson’s interior still stands out. It has a waterfall dashboard design with thin air vents that wrap all the way around the rectangular dash and onto the door cards, and a large center panel that houses the infotainment system and climate controls. Most trims get analog gauges with a 4.2-inch display in the center, but optional on the SEL and standard on the Limited is a nice 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The Limited also gets a push-button gear selector instead of the physical shifter found on the other trims.
Cloth upholstery is standard, and the base Tucson has plastic door panels, but supportive leather seats and soft-touch door cards are standard on the Limited and available on the SEL. I definitely prefer the two-tone light gray and black color scheme you see here, as the interior looks more sterile in all black. One of my favorite details is the Limited’s cool fabric inserts on the door panels and on the dash in front of the passenger; I wish that material had been used more throughout the interior.
The base Tucson uses an 8-inch touchscreen, but Limited models like my car get a 10.3-inch display running the same fantastic infotainment system that’s found in a number of other Hyundai Motor Group products like the Santa Fe and the Kia K5. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board, but only cars with the 8-inch screen get wireless CarPlay. The large display looks really good and is super snappy, and I like that you can swipe over to a simple display that just shows the clock and exterior temperature info. It’s also got fun features like nature soundscapes, and there’s a quiet mode for the audio that focuses the noise on the driver.
This is an extremely nice place to be.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
While the lower-end Tucsons have a bunch of physical buttons and knobs, the Limited replaces them with an entirely touch-sensitive panel for the climate, audio and infotainment controls, and a digital display for the temperature and fan speed. I’d like a home button for the infotainment and want the buttons to have some sort of force feedback, but they’re easy to get used to. You can hold your finger on a button to quickly adjust fan speed or volume, and I love that Hyundai has multiple intensities for the automatic climate control.
Comfort over corner carving
The Tucson’s standard powertrain is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-4 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It makes 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, nearly identical to the Honda CR-V’s turbo motor and 16 hp and 6 lb-ft less than the RAV4’s four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive is standard, but my test car has the optional $1,400 all-wheel-drive system that has variable torque distribution. This engine is perfectly fine around town and on the highway, but it certainly doesn’t make the Tucson quick or sporty-feeling. The transmission can be sluggish to downshift, but at least the Limited comes with paddle shifters.
The Tucson’s steering is both lightly weighted and light on feedback, and there’s a good amount of body roll in the corners. But what this crossover lacks in sportiness it makes up for in comfort. Even on the Limited’s 19-inch wheels the Tucson soaks up bumps and rough surfaces, delivering a superb ride that’s smoother than any of its competitors — even the refined Mazda CX-5. It’s luxury-car quiet on the inside, too, though the noisy engine sometimes cuts through that serenity under hard acceleration.

The Tucson’s rear seat reclines and folds flat.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
The EPA rates the Tucson at 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined for the front-drive model, while the AWD Tucson is rated at 24/29/26. In mostly stop-and-go city driving I average about 22 mpg, but on a long drive from Los Angeles to Bakersfield I match the Tucson’s 29-mpg highway figure — and that’s at 85 mph with elevation changes and the air conditioning on.
Every Tucson trim level is available with a new hybrid setup that pairs a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor for a total of 261 hp, and it’s rated at nearly 40 mpg. While I haven’t had a chance to drive the Tucson hybrid yet, with turbo response, more power and better efficiency, it might be the powertrain to get. But there’s also a plug-in hybrid on the way with 261 hp and 32 miles of electric range, and the recently revealed Santa Cruz pickup, which is based on the Tucson, has an available turbo-four engine with 281 hp and 311 lb-ft that’s paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Tucson N, anyone?
Lots of bang for your buck
The base Tucson SE starts at $26,135 including $1,185 for destination, making it cheaper than rivals from Honda and Toyota. It comes with full-LED front lighting, automatic headlights and high beams, 17-inch wheels, keyless entry, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist with lane centering, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a pair of front-passenger USB outlets and HD radio.

Upper trims get a 10.3-inch screen and touch controls.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
Jumping up to the $27,685 SEL nets you LED taillights, push-button start, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, two USB outlets in the rear, heated side mirrors, a powered driver’s seat, heated front seats, auto up/down front windows, satellite radio, blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic assist and a number of aesthetic improvements. A $2,600 Convenience package adds things like a hands-free power liftgate, 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, that digital gauge cluster, a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel, 10-color ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control and wireless charging. There’s also a $1,700 Premium package with leather seats, ventilated front seats, a Bose audio system and the dark chrome grille. Then there’s a $31,785 N Line trim that builds off the SEL and its packages with more aggressive exterior styling, unique interior trimmings and sportier tuning for the suspension and steering, though it doesn’t add any extra power.
The fully loaded $35,885 Limited model like I have includes features and tech items that would have been unheard of in an affordable compact crossover not even 10 years ago. In addition to everything from those SEL packages, it adds a panoramic sunroof, more exterior brightwork, a 360-degree camera and parking sensors, Hyundai’s Digital Key phone app, memory for the driver’s seat, a powered passenger seat, rain-sensing wipers, remote smart park, 64-color interior ambient lighting, blind-spot cameras that display in the gauge cluster, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel, and Hyundai’s Level 2 Highway Driving Assist system. Strangely, one feature that the Tucson doesn’t have is auto up/down rear windows, which is a weird omission given how much other fancy stuff you can get.
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson’s styling won’t be for everyone, and that’s OK. I think it’s better to stand out and be memorable than to be anonymous and fade into the background, especially in such a packed and traditionally boring segment. If you’re into the angular looks — or can at least get past them — the redesigned Tucson offers the best mix of tech, features, refinement and value of any new compact crossover today.
