Citizen Barbie

Wake Up My Fellow Citizens!

This Barbie had a new obsession. More like, a part of routine already. Every time I open my internet browser, the first thing I’ll visit is Youtube where I’ll be watching either a video analysis on movie tropes or a video essay on current issues. I’d rather watch than read articles. The visual presentations entertain me more than the paragraphs written in black ink over a white background. But I never expected I would be able to finish reading an essay again. Nick Joaquin’s “A Heritage of Smallness” captivated me so much that it managed to evoke strong feelings from me. His essay talks about how Filipinos are only good at dealing with things in small quantities yet never risk making it bigger. He further explains that every aspect in a Filipino's life comes in tingi like sachets or eggs, for example, are sold in sari-sari stores per piece rather than in bulk like eggs are typically sold in dozens in other Western countries.

As spiteful as it sounds, this line states that the concept of tingi has manifested in the way we create communities. Whenever a population in a province inflates, it further divides into smaller districts and barangays rather than remain as one big whole province or combine to make a one big city. He said that this implies that we never go out of our comfort zones because we’re afraid to take risks on something bigger than ourselves. We always go back to already perfect miniature stuff because that’s where we excel and never try moving onto the next challenging tasks. The affinity to smallness has divided us to the point we are not able to unite and move towards a common goal. If you look at it geographically, we are literally separated by bodies of water which is a possible factor why we’re not connected at all. On each island, there exist various cultures and languages which become barriers in communication making it harder to understand each other’s sentiments. Historically, some Filipino indigenous groups were even feuding with one another. I felt embarrassed with the points he said because I also agree with it.

Then, I found another essay by Plebejus (2019) written in response to Joaquin’s essay saying that it’s just a minimalist way of living, consuming exactly what is needed.

My view on this tingi phenomenon is that we are living in a third-world country where wages are never enough to buy our necessities. We can’t afford to buy things in excess because we have to allocate our money to other priorities in our daily lives. I’ve viewed buying sachets as environmentally harmful before and criticizing people who subscribe to single-use packaging that it is irresponsible and selfish to not care about the environment, but then when I experienced having my own money and managing it, I realized that this broke Barbie can only afford that tingi. Thanks to this tingi system, we managed to survive. Also, one thing I’ve learned in my degree program in terms of using plastic material as food packaging is that it serves the purpose of making packaged food shelf-stable. Plastic packaging can essentially be layered to have additional protection against sunlight for example preventing light-sensitive nutrients of the packaged food inside to be degraded, and it also enables prolonged storage at room conditions as well as in transport without deteriorating in quality and edibility. Through tingi, everybody can purchase a quality food product on a budget. I thought Joaquin was living somewhere outside the Philippines as it seems that his opinions were formed by viewing through the lenses of a Filipino comparing his culture to the other culture that seems to have managed their social issues effectively but I was wrong though. He survived wars and pretty much went through a lot. He was said to have written with an optimistic view towards his fellow Filipinos but this essay felt the opposite of it. This frustration he felt can be attributed to the fact that he wrote it in 1966, a year where Marcos Sr. was the president (Limos, 2019).

Joaquin also pointed out that we can’t use the excuse of being colonized forever to justify why our country hasn’t moved forward when we’ve obtained freedom from conquerors a long time ago. He blamed it’s our attitude of settling for less that hindered us from progressing. In response to this, Plebejus (2019) said that Moros for example has a hard time having to relate and have a sense of belongingness to the Filipino nation when we don’t share a common interest. Our shared identity at times seemed to be foreign to them. He also added that the Filipinos aren’t to be blamed with their current status, nor does it show their unwillingness to develop. This should be blamed on the mismanagement and bad governance in the country which I can also agree with in a sense that Filipinos are always fooled with electing politicians that put nothing but their personal interests once elected. The lack of ability to critically think of the general public made us all elect incompetent ones and it’s unfortunate to see that this goes on up to this date.

Recycle with Creativity 2 in 6 points (Romanian team)

1. Introduction to environment and project introduction

In a rapidly evolving world, we realize that environmental approaches must not only be ethical, but also creative. The environment is the natural foundation that sustains both, the natural life and our everyday activities. Without adequate protection, the quality of people's lives in the near future will significantly deteriorate. Thus, environmental ethics combined with creative tools of preserving the environment becomes imperative for any sustainable project that will be developed by local authorities, regional communities or societies, as a whole.

Reuniting participants from five different countries (Turkey, Slovakia, Portugal, Romania and Bulgaria), Recycle with creativity 2 is a project that tries to encapsulate all the above-mentioned components. The project focuses on creative recycling, alongside social media and media promotion. The aim of the project is to encourage young people to actively contribute to environmental protection by recycling and creatively reusing old materials. The objectives of the project are the following:

· Raising awareness of environmental issues, especially waste pollution;

· Equipping young people with the creative recycling and media tools to be able to react to environmental issues in an innovative way;

· Encouraging young people to become active citizens;

· Improving participants' abilities to disseminate results and teachings in the mass media and to promote them to produce an impact;

· Promoting ERASMUS + opportunities, intercultural cooperation, and non-formal education;

· Facilitating participants to work in an intercultural environment, to discover new cultures and countries and, therefore, increase the tolerance and acceptance of diversity;

· Improve participants' ability to work in an international group and productively cooperate.

Human beings should be in an ethical relationship with the environment by doing two important things: (1) recognizing plant and animal rights and (2) realizing the intrinsic worth of nature. Not surprisingly, the conservation of natural resources and the protection of the environment are significant issues that are supported by almost every nation-state around the world and continuously pushed on the global agenda by different realist and pragmatic actors which cannot conceive the future without a proper protection and conservation of the environment.

2. GLASS

Glass recycling is a simple way to make a beneficial contribution to preserving our environment. A glass bottle that is sent to a landfill can take up to a million years to break down. By contrast, being that hard to imagine a time when glass wasn't a part of everyday life, we figure out a way to create beautiful art from it.

Modern glass made for artistic purposes! Art glass has grown in popularity in recent years with many artists becoming famous for their work; and, as a result, more colleges are offering courses in glasswork. Regardless of their common shape, people have found amazing ways to utilize glass bottles and be useful in so many ways. In the same direction, we designed our activity during this project glass workshop. The main purpose for our products was decoration but often also for utility, from glass, sometimes combined with other materials.

The technique include the use of glass bottles or jars of different shapes and colors. Therefore, we had two groups working on different stages of manufacturing our decorating bottles.

First, we used our creativity on personalizing these bottles using different materials like: watercolors, markers, brushes, color spray, rope and everything that we could find around. In this way, we had painted and sprayed bottles and gars with many color and texture combinations, different design and decorations on it.

The main products that we’ve create was vases of flowers and jars with straw. Thus, on the second stage, we’ve create for our vases many paper flowers on origami technique. For these bouquets of flowers, we learned how to cut, fold and stick the small pieces of paper.

At the end, besides the fact that we learned new techniques and we improve our crafting skills, we understand how important recycling glass it is and what the benefits are. We could preserve our environment and re-use, re-purpose and redesign to become home decorations we’ve never imagined!

3. PAPER

Paper is the most common and frequent waste released from all areas of activity. Although it is a good used daily, people are irresponsible when it comes to use and recycle. Recycling paper means turning the waste into new products and some of the reasons we do this are:

Avoiding natural imbalances, losing many natural habitats and ecosystems, destroying and threatening with extinction of many species of plants and animals by saving wood.

We use up to 65% less energy and 80% less water, than the production of virgin paper.

Paper is biodegradable. While rotting in landfills, a very powerful greenhouse gas, methane, is produced. Paper recycling helps reduce CO2 and methane emissions and helps reduce global warming.

Recycling paper reduces the amount of toxins released in air and water because it uses oxygen and not chlorine for bleaching.

In our recycling program we have developed multiple products from previously used paper that can create a beautiful decoration. We used cartons from boxes to create photo frames with different designs and colors. Each member of the team used color, markers or color sprays to create a unique and personalized pattern for his frame.

From pieces of newspaper and pieces of paper, we were able to make small flowers. We used them to decorate the frames and also to make a beautiful bouquet that fits any decor.

If we use our imagination we can make a lot of things from the paper that was already used. Even if we are taking about frames, flowers, cards or panels, our handmade work can help in saving the planet.

4. CLOTHES

The fashion industry is now being counted as one of the world’s biggest polluters. We must take into consideration not only the obvious pollutants, such as the pesticides used in cotton farming and the toxic dyes used in manufacturing, but also the huge amount of natural resources used in extraction, farming, processing, manufacturing and shipping the final product.

It takes 2700 liters of water to make one t-shirt and 10 000 liters for a pair of jeans! Synthetic, man-made fibers, while not as water-intensive, often have issues with manufacturing pollution and sustainability. And across all textiles, the manufacturing and dyeing of fabrics is chemically intensive.

Therefore, due to environmental awareness and landfill pressure, the interest in garment recycling is rapidly on the rise. By turning clothes into different garments, using them to create home decor or just by restyling and re-purposing them, you’ll never let good clothes go to waste again!

As one of the topics discussed at RWC youth exchange and probably one of our favorite workshops, garment recycling made us more aware of the endless ways of up-cycling out there and gave us a very good time: re-designing old clothes from a thrift shop and even having a fashion-show afterwards!

We have learned about the extravagant amount of pollution this messy industry comes along with and we became more aware of the fact that we can contribute to a more sustainable Planet by simply reusing, restyling and re-purposing old clothing! As other alternatives, we can exchange clothes among our friends, bring them to a consignment store in our area or simply donate them to a thrift store.

5. ORGANIC WASTE

The topic about organic waste refers mainly to the use of this type of biodegradable material in order to create compost. Its components are of human and animal nature and that is the difference that allows the organic waste to break down easier over time than plastic or other synthetic materials.

Composting is the agricultural practice that involves organic waste and an agent that enables the return of vital nutrients back to the soil. It is documented that composting has been an agricultural practice that took place even one century before Christ. Nevertheless, the modern way of composting is based strongly on factories that have the necessary technological machinery in order to convey organic waste into compost.

During our visit in Antalya we have visited a factory where we learned that through chemical processes waste, solid and liquid can be transformed in order to be used again. The factory used organic elements found in municipal solid waste to create compost. Also, sewage waste was treated in order to become land fertilizer.

6. Cultural nights and the Erasmus+ projects

Erasmus + is the program by which the EU supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe. It has a budget of € 14.7 billion, with which more than 4 million Europeans can gain experience and access to education, training and volunteering abroad. The Erasmus + program, to be run by 2020, is not limited to students. It brings together 7 previous programs and offers opportunities for different categories of people and organizations.

After the project had ended, the participants received a Youthpass certificate and if you ask what is a Youthpass, let me give you the answer. The Youthpass certificate helps to document the development of competences, as well as to confirm participation and describe the respective project. An essential part of the initiative is attention to the planning of the learning process and reflection upon the participants' personal learning outcomes. As a strategy, it aims at fostering the recognition of non-formal learning and youth work.

The main ideas behind Youthpass are to enhance reflection on learning and competence development in youth work, receive greater recognition of youth work throughout Europe, support the employability of young people and youth workers, and promote active participation of young people. Since 2005, the SALTO Training and Cooperation RC has been in charge of the development and implementation of Youthpass, on behalf of the European Commission.

In the end, I want to mention that the cultural nights were by far the most interesting events of the project. Each of the five countries - Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Portugal and Turkey - struggled to create new moments. You cannot be bored with so wonderful people who work daylight, and in the evening party a lot. I would need a few tens of pages to tell everything that happened, so I would rather cover everything in mystery: What happens in Antalya stays in Antalya.

The Transhumanist movement is made up of people of various political leanings. There are those who skew left-of-center, those with a more libertarian mindset, and there are even some who are archly conservative. But they all share a belief that science and technology can be wielded to cheat death. And they’re all completely tone deaf.

I first came to Transhumanism in my work as a journalist. In my career, which has spanned a decade of reporting and editorial writing on the intersection of human rights, policy, and science, nothing has raised my hackles as much as this movement’s quest for immortality and the ignorance of the inherent inequality of the discussion around that idea.

It was actually this ignorance, or perhaps willful callousness, that made me pivot my career to focus on bioethics, in which my main areas of research are biohacking, DIY science, and fringe technologies. I overlap with Transhumanist interests more often than not in my career. And it’s not all negative. In fact, I very much agree with the other maxims of the movement, including self-experimentation and morphological freedom, and I enjoy investigating the ethical challenges associated with using scientific knowledge to enhance the limits of the human body.

My disagreement with transhumanists isn’t that they want to be immortal. That goal has been a popular pastime of the wealthy, fearful, and bored for at least a millennia. It’s not the quest for immortality that seems unreasonable to me.

It’s the timing.

We live in an age where civil liberties are constantly under threat. People are in fear of being assaulted, detained, or even killed by state-sponsored actors from municipal police forces to ICE. It seems that our freedoms are eroded daily in favor of catering to the fleeting temper tantrums of one man. Trying to unleash radical life-extension strategies in this political climate is at best vain and misguided, and at worst offensive to anyone who doesn’t possess freedom over their bodies, or doesn’t possess the privilege to even think about living forever.

Some of us are just trying to make sure we’re alive at the end of the week.

Memento mori? Nah, bro.

There are several so-called “life-extension” technologies, some of them absolute bunk, others questionable-but-possible, and some theoretical-but-perhaps-legitimate. None of them are currently able to keep us alive for longer than a normal human lifespan, which currently hovers around 80 years old in most developed countries.

There is simply no logical reason to invest money in being frozen.

It’s true, we have already used modern medicine to extend our lives significantly over the past couple decades, and by some estimates, the first person to live to 150 has already been born. But radical longevity enthusiasts aren’t just hoping for an extra century or two. The moonshot is true immortality, and the investments by Randian billionaires into tremendously questionable efforts by private companies seeking secret ways to avoid dying are staggering — perhaps even reaching into the trillions of dollars.

Cryonics, or the idea that a dead body can be frozen at extremely low temperatures and resurrected at some point in the future when technology has evolved to bring frozen people back from the dead, is a big-ticket theory with Transhumanists. There are global conferences dedicated to the study of cryonics, a technology that is said to preserve tissue so well that this tissue is essentially still alive. Or so the story goes.

Max More, one of the original founders of the modern transhumanist movement, and the author of a 1990s Transhumanist manifesto, owns and operates Alcor, one of the country’s largest cryonics facilities. There, those hoping to simply press pause on their deaths and join humanity as a reanimated corpse can buy a tank for themselves, their loved ones, or their pets, for a pretty price. Alcor charges a minimum of $200,000 for whole-body preservation. (The running price of preserving a loved one at the Cryonics Institute, another major operation, starts at $35,000.)

Unfortunately, cryonics is bullshit.

Scientists agree that the freezing process damages cells irreparably, by creating what are essentially cellular icicles. Not to mention that reheating a human body — cells, membranes, and so on — also mangles the many proteins and pieces that comprise us. One BBC investigation into cryo-preservation pointed out that organs often need different temperatures and environments to maintain functionality, something we know from preserving them for donation.

There is simply no logical reason to invest money into being frozen. It doesn’t work now, it likely won’t ever work, and by the time it ever does work, no one who was frozen now will be able to be successfully resurrected.

A similarly dubious technological attempt at dodging death is brain uploading. This concept is basically just the plot of Transcendence. A major proponent of brain uploading is Transhumanist luminary Martine Rothblatt,the founder of SiriusXM satellite radio and the highest-paid female CEO in the country. When the time comes, Rothblatt would like to upload her wife, Bina, to the cloud — a project that is already underway with Bina48, a social robot that has Bina’s personality — and her own Twitter account.

The concept behind brain uploading is that someday, everyone will be able to upload their entire consciousness and personality to a server and preserve themselves digitally, only to be transferred at some point into some other vessel, if they so desire. (Popular options are humanoid robots or similar household objects.)

This is a fun pastime for people who can afford it, no doubt. Talking to robots is awesome. (My kid’s first word will likely be “Alexa.”) And AI and robotics technologies are progressing at an incredible pace. However, true mind uploading is incredibly far off, because there is no evidence that personality traits reside within brain tissue, and there is no proven way to harness memories or creativity, or any of the other things that make you “you.”

Still, one provocative start-up is currently enrolling patients who want to try out this tech. (You just have to die first).

The most realistic-seeming life extension technique lie somewhere in the realm of regenerative medicine, a fringe of largely theoretical ideas based in real science that is progressing rapidly. Aubrey de Grey, the famed Cambridge gerontologist, who is also a figure in the Transhumanist movement, leads this charge. He is followed by a number of stem cell experts, geneticists, and otherwise legitimate characters who have taken up the mantle of the study of genetics and telomeres.

Telomeres are the timekeepers of human genes. They are small capsule-like pieces that make up the bottom of chromosomes and are often described as the little plastic nubs at the end of a shoelace. Their length appears to be indicative of lifespan because they seem to shrink as humans age. The longer the telomere, the longer you’ve got on the terrestrial plane, or so the theory goes.

This is real science, and there are plenty of legitimate aging studies underway that involve measuring telomeres and to see how they correspond to aging and disease. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad science surrounding the theory as well.

Liz Parrish, the CEO of a company called BioViva, claims to be the first person to have elongated her telomeres through gene therapy that she perhaps performed on herself, possibly in Colombia.
