Portrait of Elizaveta Grigorievna Temkina by Vladimir Borovikovsky, 1798
The artist depictured her when she was twenty two. She always knew, who her parents were, and contemporaries described her as “self-confident and wilful, the true daughter of Gregory Potemkin”. At the insistence of her mother, Catherine the Great, Elizaveta married Ivan Kalageorgi, who was a seconds-major of prince Potemkin’s kirasir regiment and a tutor of grand duke Konstantin Pavlovich. She gave birth to six daughters and four sons and lived distancing herself from political storms.
