between s.h.i.e.l.d and lock-up, ava booker chose the lesser of two evils. neither were ideal, but at least at s.h.i.e.l.d she could pretend she was doing some good. besides, with a ‘shining’ offer from fury himself, how could she refuse? when she joins the academy though, she wishes she had. it’s noticeable from the first day that she’s not exactly well-liked, especially by her supervisor. there’s little to be done though, the government had never liked vigilante justice, especially when it was being preformed by ‘violent’ mutants. ava didn’t consider herself violent, but sundrian’s track record wasn’t great. after seemingly pushing her supervisor to the edge, he offers a challenge to her so-called ‘skills’: get into the avengers building and back out, with one of their s.h.i.e.l.d security cards in hand. it’s almost too easy for her. however, glory doesn’t last when fury pits her training the avengers; since, quoting her, they were ‘completely unequipped to deal with mutants’.

marie-ange carnahan’s life changed at 16 when her father died. a military man and the only person mar would ever consider her parent. his death upended mar’s life and witnessing it destroyed her older sister, aurore. the sisters spiralled; aurore fell into herself and mar fell into trouble with petty crime. it’s only when she sees how far her sister has fallen into her mental illnesses that mar pulls her head in. she manages to graduate high school and turns her gaze to s.h.i.e.l.d, her father had once spoken highly of the agency. she trains extensively and graduates almost top of her class at the operations academy. she was on a good path, until her diagnosis. a brain tumour, quickly discovered to be inoperable, untreatable. she’d be dead, and her sister would have no one. mar wouldn’t allow it, she wouldn’t go down without a fight. that stubbornness lead her to a follow the quiet whisperings to s.h.i.e.l.d’s labs, to a supersoldier experiment that was just getting legs. she’d be their guinea pig, she’d sign any paper so long as her sister would be cared for in the case of her death. experimentation comes with difficulty, but mar prevails. ‘liberty’, she becomes, though she hates the name. it’s just something of a ‘shame’ that steve rogers is un-iced before she ever debutes.

she cares nothing of heroes, that is what is to be said of ilena strophalos. she was no hero herself but she carried names upon her shoulders, as all the infamous do. she was the moonstone, the crossroad’s queen, hecate’s child. she was blessed with little in the terms of her mother’s magic, but most forgot hecate’s other associations; the moon and graves and night, the crossroads ilena found familiarity in, the dogs nipping at her mother’s heels and the ghosts unseen by other’s eyes. she cares nothing of heroes, but witchcraft is her mother’s right and ilena stands with the sorcerers and witch and mages. when chaos magic comes to life in their realm, ilena finds it essence in the ruins of sokovia. hecate and ilena are no strangers to chthon, and the wielder of his magics must be protected lest they unleash him upon the world. so ilena is given a missions: to search the mystic locals and find chaos’ host, and if she must deal with heroes to do so, then so be it.
