Oh yes, basically, if you’re looking for a diverse retelling/origin story of the Evil Queen set in a fantasy world inspired by Ancient China, look no further. Despite its slow start, and in-spite of the fact that we all know the outcome, you can’t help but root for and sympathize with Xifeng (or titular Empress who shall be rising). Even as she makes choices that push her closer to the dark point of no return, you want her to succeed. There are multiple points where you want to shake sense into her, but that doesn’t make your heart hurt any less when you see the future Evil Empress get manipulated, abused, or otherwise mistreated. There’s a good mix of vivid scenery/description, character development (especially when it comes to Xifeng’s mental deterioration/madness), and magic. It continues the stories of Elias Veturius, Lia of Serra, and Helene Aquilla as their diverged paths lead them to face battles far beyond their wildest dreams/nightmares and threats both human and inhuman in nature. Tahir drops your right back into the action, inclduing chapters from the Nightbringer's perspective and let me tell you, despite the build in death and destruction and darkness and 'oh shit what else could possibly happen'...it was awesome. • I don’t know how to properly review this book without offering you a review of the two that came before, I don’t know if I can do it objectively, to be honest. • All I can say is that the little teenaged brown girl that I used to be, the one that resides within me still, was looking for this kind of representation all my life. • I’m fangirling without actually talking about the plot/characters/writing. I know. I don’t care. This is the kind of book I wish I had growing up, with all the love and respect for those that came before that I did manage to get my hands on and that might have influenced the wonderful Sabaa Tahir. • This is the kind of series I can’t wait to let my future children read. May they grow up to be as awesome as Laia of Serra and as empathetic as Helene Aquilla. 📚A of JAF recently finished reading: Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick • Rating: 🐲🐲🐲🐲/5 • ⁉️ #qotd: You ever finish reading a book and just not know how to express your feelings about it? • Well, that’s me with Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick. It was my third book of the year and a book I’ve had on my shelf for over three years now. My inability to express my feelings isn’t a reflection of a bad book, quite the opposite. • Ghosts of Heaven is a very unique, slightly strange, and highly thought-provoking book told in 4 “quarters” set in four different time periods (pre-historic to distant future) with only humans and the idea/concept/theme of spirals connecting them. • Sedgwick himself says in the introduction that the quarters can be read in any order, creating different meanings or interpretations for the reader, which in turn adds another level of weirdness and uniqueness to the reading experience. • It’s not a book I’d recommend to everyone, but it is a book I’d recommend. I don’t make sense do I? It’s okay, I’m seeing spirals everywhere. Don’t believe me?
