This One-Owner 1968 Camaro was found in Griffith Park
There are landmarks you won’t find in any guidebook. Get familiar with a town, and you’ll recognize cars that tell the city’s stories better than any cut-roof bus tour. Such is the mysterious Griffith Park Camaro, a faded Tripoli Turquoise 1968 Camaro that is as regular a Los Angeles sighting as the stars on Hollywood Boulevard or waves against the Malibu sand. The car is always parked in the same spot at the top of Observatory Road in the hills above Los Feliz, California. It sits there every day, headlights toward Hollywood, wheels turned hard to the left, employee parking badge dangling from the rearview mirror. Those in the know can tell you it’s a one-owner car, a daily driver with a half-million miles on its well-spun odometer, but its full story is one of rockets and moon men. It starts both in outer space and in the scrub brush of California.
E.C. Krupp is the owner of the Camaro and the director of Griffith Observatory, three pleasingly symmetrical art deco scoops of chocolate stone against the wild green-gold hills of Los Angeles. The observatory sits in the hills on the south end of Griffith Park, L.A.’s wild, 4,310-acre answer to New York’s manicured Central Park. The land came as a gift in the late 1890s from millionaire “Colonel” Griffith J. Griffith. His gift was controversial. Although he was vocal and poetic about the importance of public land and support for the sciences, he suffered from alcoholism and delusions and spent time in prison for attempted murder—he shot his wife. She survived but sensibly left him. The resulting scandal meant that Griffith’s dreams of a public observatory and theatre in the hills over Hollywood wouldn’t come to fruition until after his death. During his life, the city council wouldn’t accept the donation, and he left it in trust as part of his will.
None of this violent history is apparent when you visit the observatory. To the west is the famous Hollywood sign, and to the east is the strange mirage of downtown L.A.’s skyscrapers rising from the suburban sprawl. In the dark, Griffith Park belongs to mountain lions and coyotes, but at sunset it’s a mass of tourists. Spend any time there, and you’ll know “Say Cheese,” or its national equivalent in 30 different languages. Although most photographers aim their lenses and selfie sticks at the famous remains of Hollywoodland or the observatory dome, some face in toward the parking lot, framing their pouts and smiles against a backdrop of blue Chevy F-body.
They don’t know, these visitors, that the #oldcar in their Instagram shots is the daily mule of the science center’s big boss. Krupp bought the Camaro new in 1968, and it’s been his sole transportation up until 2004, when he bought a backup car—a 1994 Miata. Krupp describes himself as “not a car guy” because he hires a mechanic to wrench on his fleet. He’s a smart man, but he’s wrong here. There are many ways of being a “car guy,” and certainly keeping a classic on the road for half a century is one of them.
Krupp has worked at Griffith Observatory since 1970, and his enthusiasm for the place is undimmed. When we met to talk about the Camaro, he took me on a mini tour inside the observatory. We followed the curve of the dome to a conference room, where he went immediately to the window and raised the blinds, giving us a view of the city, dollhouse-small below. He looked out for several breaths, maybe retracing his morning commute up the twisting park roads, then sat down and adjusted his glasses. “Start at the beginning,” I said, and he told me about the Colonel, the building of the observatory in 1933, and his father—a mechanical engineer with a passion for the budding space program in the 1950s. “He told me he didn’t want to go to the moon,” Krupp said, “but he wanted to push the button.” When E.C. was 12, Krupp Sr. moved the family to Los Angeles in hopes of finding work in Los Angeles’ active space race scene. They settled in the San Fernando Valley, and as a kid, E.C. could see the glow of Apollo rockets being tested in the Santa Susana pass. As he got older, E.C. was also interested in the stars and studied astronomy at UCLA. While still a graduate student, he started working at the Griffith Planetarium. “I didn’t care for it at first,” he said. “But eventually I realized, ‘Hey, I drive through a park every day to get to work, and the work is hands-on. It’s immediate. It’s a small team. I can make things happen.”
The drive might have done something to win Krupp over to his work, but it was hard on his car at the time, a 1963 Austin-Healy Sprite. After expensive preventative maintenance and numerous breakdowns that didn’t get prevented, Krupp’s dad laid down an engineer’s law of logic. “My father finally said, ‘You need a reliable American car.’” Reluctantly, the young Krupp traded in his sporty car. “There was a deal on Camaros,” he said.  “I got the cheapest one, maybe $2,600. Straight-six, three-on-the-tree, manual everything. I hated it.” Compared to the Austin-Healy, the Camaro was a big, sloppy boat. “I called it the mushmobile. But I just kept driving it.” As the odometer turned, his dislike turned to acceptance and then affection for the F-body. “You keep something for a while for practical reasons, and eventually it becomes romantic.”
One of Krupp’s priorities as director of the observatory is keeping it relevant. He modernized the planetarium and supervises new exhibits and technologies to keep the 80-year-old facility up to date in the modern space age. Knowing this, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect with the Wi-Fi in the Leonard Nimoy Theatre and the six-banger ’68 parked outside. “The key with technology is pushing the edge to do the job you need,” he said when I asked about it. “There is a big difference between style and need, and my personal ideas of style are more Luddite. I see no point in spending money or energy on things before I need them.”
For almost 50 years and 501,189 miles (more since we shot it), this approach has kept the Camaro on the road, through two engine rebuilds, four clutches, brake jobs, steering repairs, tune-ups, new upholstery, and three repaints. The whole time, Krupp has always gone for stock replacements. No LS-swaps or even four-bbl carbs for his Camaro. Again, that’s a choice that started as sensible—why complicate a working system—and became emotional. “I don’t mind spending the money for repairs,” he said. “It’s just getting hard to find people who will work on it the way I want. At this point, I don’t have an interest in changing the car. You want as simple a technology as will do the job.”
Rantz to the Rescue
One of Krupp’s concerns when he told us his story was that he didn’t count as a car guy because he didn’t do his own repairs. We don’t think turning the wrenches is a requirement for loving cars, but we did want to hear from the folks who helped Krupp keep the Camaro on the road. In the ’70s, finding a mechanic to work on a 1968 Camaro was easy—after all, it was still a new car. The trouble started when Krupp’s long-time mechanic, Del Stapp, retired in the early 2000s. How do you find someone to keep everything stock and humming on a nearly 40-year-old car?
Many of Stapp’s former clients were going to a new place in Eagle Rock called Rantz Auto Center, which was run by a father and son named Ricardo and Anthony Antunez. Krupp gave them a try and found kindred spirits. “We’re old-fashioned, too,” Anthony said. “We always tell him, ‘Keep it stock; don’t open that can of worms.’”
Since 2005, Ricardo, Anthony, and service manager Jesse Nuñez have been keeping the Camaro in tune. “It’s his baby,” Anthony said. “We always make it a priority when it comes in. He has a backup car now, the Mazda, but we know he prefers to drive the Camaro.” Anthony said the car is a sort of neighborhood celebrity, attracting attention whenever it comes in for maintenance and repairs. “We do whatever it takes: go to the junkyard, find a parts car, research for original parts. Mr. Krupp is an amazing person, and we want to get him back out there.”
Does Anthony have any advice for someone thinking of daily driving a classic? “Have a strong left foot if you want a manual car, stay out of traffic, and learn how to say no when people ask to buy it!”
In 2014, E.C. Krupp’s one-owner Camaro had accrued 481,555 miles, the distance of a trip to the moon and back again. The timing matched up with Griffith Observatory’s 80th anniversary and Krupp’s 40th year at Griffith. He celebrated by driving the Camaro to the anniversary party in an Apollo 11 spacesuit replica. “I had to practice ahead of time to see if I could work the clutch in astronaut boots.”
For an academically minded hippie in the late ’60s, trading in a cool English sports car on something as “Establishment” as a Chevrolet was a bummer, man. A young Krupp attempted to reclaim his counterculture cred with painted “stained glass” graphics on the Camaro’s quarter windows. “It was a Thomas Pynchon reference, [the muted horn from the novel The Crying of Lot 49] with an added astronomy reference [the sun],” he said.
In 1968 you could get a “big” 250ci six-cylinder or the most base of base engines, a 140-hp 230ci mill. Krupp’s Camaro is the little one. “There was a deal on Camaro,” he said. The engine has been rebuilt twice but never replaced or upgraded.
One of the biggest challenges for Krupp’s mechanic was finding a correct steering column for the three-speed column shifter. “For a while I had an aluminum brace around it,” Krupp said. “I didn’t think it would last, but I figured I’d just keep having the machinist make me a new one. It actually worked fine and was still in place when we finally found a replacement column.”
A clutch in L.A. traffic gets a workout, especially climbing the steep roads surrounding Griffith Observatory. Krupp said the benefit to a manual car and parking on hills is being able to jump-start from a roll when the battery dies. He’s on clutch No. 4. That’s about 125,297 miles per rebuild.
Krupp and his mechanic, Anthony Antunez, agree on keeping the Camaro as original as possible. The only place where they differ is on the subject of paint. Anthony thinks the car deserves to be shiny but says: “Mr. Krupp, he likes that vintage look.”
Krupp said a lot of keeping the Camaro running is getting attuned to changes in the way it feels. “You get used to its idiosyncrasies, and then you know the feel of the clutch or the brakes. You can predict when it’s time to deal with them.”
The first Camaro A six-cylinder column-shifted Camaro might not be the first combo you think of when you think of that most bitchin’ of cars, but the first Camaro of Camaros was exactly that. Camaro No. N100001 is known as a pilot production car, and it was used in press conferences and photo shoots to introduce Chevy’s new ponycar in 1966. It then was sold to a dealer, who kept it as a display car for two years, so the first production Camaro didn’t end up on the road until 1969. The Camaro went through numerous owners and was modified as a drag car until a 13-year-old kid named Logan saw it for sale and pointed it out to his dad. Logan and Corey Lawson bought the Camaro and restored it, building a database of Camaro history along the way. Spend some time on their site, www.pilotcarregistry.com, to learn more about Camaro numero uno. Unlike Krupp’s always-stock ’68, Camaro No. 1 went through many modifications.

Tips to Create Love from Nothing At All
Libraries - The economy is hurting and many avid readers are returning to the library and so should editors. This is also an excellent way to obtain your titles into the library system. Online Alternatives: If you need to can't bring yourself to set foot into an adult toy store but are still wanting to discover what's offered, there are online alternatives and catalogs that you can purchase. Adam & Eve is an increased distributor of adult toys and can be accessed web or ordered by catalog shopping catalog. They're discreet, so no one besides you ever has to understand if you make a purchase decision. Wanting to visit a store to see what sex toys store they've in the clear way of lingerie or adult masquerade costumes? Try Frederick's of Hollywood for whatever reason racy but tasteful adult clothing. So often when Secrets To Men, Love And Relationships - love Of His Life Is your Fingertips is seen driving a Mazda Miata (on a bang for your buck basis this is handily the most fun to drive a car sport coupe/roadster on the market today) he lays himself out for derision. An individual driving a Miata is seen as weak for driving a "chick car," perhaps worse, trendy a gay man would drive. One particular inmate, Jesse Timmendequas who had previously been charged along with rape and murder of seven year-old Megan Kanka in July of 1994 is stirring up emotions in most people who may now change their minds in thinking that adult toys store the justice system works. Many times, these spouses are asking what kinds of questions may be expect as these want to require the answers in distinctive mind in order that they aren't making things as they go along. I recently heard from a husband who vowed that he was to be able to tell his wife everything on might weekend. The final big thing for Business office to get back to is the love triangle between Dwight, Angela and Andy. Closing scene of last season had Angela's party-planning rival Phyllis discover Dwight and Angela having sex, minutes after Andy's proposal. Thrill rides may quit the very first thing that pops into my head when considering romantic suggestions for your wife or girlfriend, but heart-pounding activity might be just what the doctor got. Take her on roller coasters, the tunnel of love, and win a stuffed animal for her (don't forget to permit her to play games, too) and she or he just might fall deeply in love with you over again. Who says to start a date can't be romantic and exciting ?

😈 care to tell me more abt da twins... doesn’t need to be lore heavy jus anything abt maybe why they do their hair that way or how they style their uniforms or the meanings of their names I’m curious 🤧
OH MY GOD YES HELLO ANY TIME???? yukin i love you for asking me that. thank u so much, it is always morally correct to ask me about the twins bc i love them with my entire being
the way they do their hair !! okay i rlly kinda wanted to draw like. cute matching twin-tails/buns for them, bc it would bounce off well w/their entire identical twin thing, but they also just are two people who def LOVE trying cute different hair styles !! lately i've been thinking about tess having a cute bob style or smth in the future...... grabs my tablet
as for their uniforms ! tess prefers a more gyaru-ish style !! i def think she could go out more on it and add more accessories but she also feels like the type who just loses a lot of her accessories NHDFJFDK she likes a comfy but stylish uniform ! and jess likes a typically formal but also stylish-cute uniform ! like short pencil skirts - she loves pencil skirts and skirts with leg slits, no one can take that from me HDJFFJ. but other than, she goes along w/the standards rules ! i don't think she likes skipping the blazer or the vest, they just add onto the look,,, and and !! both of the twins are matchies as well, bc they both tie their dorm armband into little ribbons <3
jess and tess - full names are jessica and teresa ! honestly i just tried to look for possibly matching twin names and jess and tess came in mind; i at first didnt intend on keeping the names, they were only placeholders, but i kinda grew attached to them qwqq. esp their actual names, it kinda goes to show that they deliberately chose to take the matchies even a step further :] as for miata. well. its just like the car <3
their bday is on the national twins day bc i love to be on the nose ! (december 18)
they actually went thru quite the change compared to their initial concept - not only did their design change quite a bit, but their personalities too. previously they were a lot more like the "typical fangirls" but i kinda wanted to deviate from that bc it simply just didnt feel like the kind of thing i'd write - and here we are ! two women who are a little too bitter at the world, hehe <3 (my little meowmeow blorbos)

So uh...yume,is there a limit? Idk if there's a limit if there's a limit just answer the one's u want🥺but um for Jess and draco mayhaps?🌠 🔥 ☁️ ☄️ ❤️ 🔫 🔪 🙈 🙉
HIHI CHOCO there is no limit, so dont worry HEHEH thank u for asking abt draco and jess 🥺
🌠 SHOOTING STAR - if they could make any wish with no repercussions, what wish would they make?
i think jess would appreciate a chance to start anew, maybe. of course, it'd be easier to wish for what she wanted directly, but it wouldn't feel rewarding at all. it's not like the goal, the competition itself, is what she wants, but moreso the journey. so a chance to decide differently, perhaps with more... forgiving circumstances, that's what she would wish for.
there isn't really anything that draco actively desires above all. he's happy as he is, even if the entire situation around his family is a bit of a bother. so maybe, he'd just wish for whatever he feels like at the moment! although... as morbid as it sounds, he would find it funny to know what it's like to walk around like a dullahan. just for a day.
🔥 FIRE - do they have any self destructive tendencies? what habits do they have that hinder them from becoming their best self?
while her demeanor usually suggests otherwise, jess is a bit of a self-destructive mess. or rather, she easily could fall into that pattern if she wouldn't have anyone to keep her in line - or rather, knock some sense into her. she tends to feel easily resentful of others if she gets disappointed by them. she isn't above holding grudges either. (her twin sister would know best what jess is like when she is at her nastiest, lowest point...) although while this may be rather unconscious, she has a hard time interpreting people's actions in any good faith and often feels like they're hiding an ulterior motive; mainly for their own personal benefit. thus, jess is quite guarded around people. she herself became rather difficult to read and a bit secretive even. a bit edging on "me vs the world", isn't it?
draco, on the other hand, is someone who lacks a lot of self-discipline. he easily gets bored and always lets himself get distracted by anything that captivates him for the moment. he likes being entertained, so any repetitive responsibilities just simply exhaust him. as a result, some would deem him to be rather irresponsible and even unreliable. not only that, but through this behavior, he tends to rip the rug under his own feet away and sabotage himself. furthermore, draco can be a bit judgmental of others - including himself. he isn't particularly on a great high horse or anything, but he tends to rather listen to his initial feeling he gets instead of thinking through things and trying to find an appropriate explanation.
☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon
it's not particularly obvious, but jess is actually quite the romantic and she adores anything romantic. though it's not like she feels cheesed by having the door held open for her or anything, she appreciates anything that really shows an innate, genuine love. a mutual understanding of one another, listening and hearing each other out, remembering the little things, etc.... she thinks these things are unique to every relationship, really, but that's what makes it so endearing. it doesn't really go to an extend where she idealizes everything, but a little dreaming never hurt anyone.
though draco doesn't mention them frequently, he actually has quite the handful of siblings. he is one of the older siblings and seems incredibly fond of his siblings. he isn't the typical big brother type, who keeps a careful watch, but rather, he is the fun sibling! he likes spending time with his younger siblings and entertaining them when he can. not to mention, they get incredibly excited whenever draco comes back home during the holidays and they finally get to spend time with their big brother again.
☄️ COMET - what do people assume about them? are they right?
because of her public persona, people assume jess to be a little sunshine, always cute and cheerful, entertaining and easily to be entertained, and all that. it does go to the extend where they think of her to be an airhead and simply just a pretty face made to be seen (and even, well... quite promiscuous). people who have been around her longer, say any fellow students, may note for her to be a lot more mellow and quiet as well as diligent on school grounds.
well, it's safe to say that's far from accurate. it's no wonder that people might think of her this way, considering she purposefully curates that image in the public eye to, well, sell better. while it is true that she can be entertaining to be around, she isn't really a sunshine nor is she airheaded. she doesn't heed any mind anymore to people who talk badly about her just because of her produced image. it's just how the industry works. though it does stay true that on school grounds, she is diligent and much more mellow in comparison to her event persona. despite all though, she isn't particularly easy to read, unless you start to be friends with her and spend more time with her.
as for draco, people assume him to be incredibly reckless and impulsive. they peg him to be a rather careless character, who does anything he wants in order to have some fun, disregarding the feelings of the people around him. fellow ignihyde students would argue though that draco isn't entirely heartless or cold.
it's not entirely untrue, to be honest. he is naturally very reckless and impulsive, trying to entertain himself at any turn he can. but it's not like he maliciously dismisses the feelings of others. he just tends to... act before he thinks. that doesn't mean he can't be malicious though... still, draco is really friendly! usually. i just think, considering how most ignihyde students seem to be rather reclusive in nature, that they feel a bit guarded against such a straightforward extrovert like draco.
❤️ RED HEART - their love language(s)?
jess: words of affirmation, acts of service
draco: physical touch, quality time
🔫 PISTOL - do they trust people easily? how easily will they turn their back to someone? have they been backstabbed before? will they betray someone if given an ultimatum?
jess is far from someone who trusts anyone just like that. she needs her time to consider you as someone trustworthy, but once she feels like you're not someone who go behind her back, she seems to trust your opinion quite deeply. then, she wouldn't turn her back on you. she kind of has been backstabbed before, but not the typical image you get when talking about backstabbing. let's just say, the industry shows you what it's like to be on your own, thrown into a cage full of tigers. it is hard to find someone who wouldn't use you for their own gain. the chances of her not betraying you are never fully zero, in all honesty. (unless, well. you're her sister. they always has each other's backs and that won't change any time soon!)
draco is someone who isn't a blindly trusting fool yet he isn't unnecessarily guarded either. he just knows when to play his cards correctly, in a sense. don't be hostile but don't be a fool either! he is actually very able to maintain a good balance. though of course, he isn't immune to being betrayed either, so when/if it ever occurs, he would know better to ever put his faith into that person again. it's not like he would particularly blame himself either. sometimes, people are just incredibly deceitful. he isn't someone who would let that get to him. other than that, he really doesn't feel fond of the idea of betraying anyone else either; it just feels quite far from being a good sport.
🔪 KNIFE - how do they react to injury / misfortune befalling their loved ones (significant other, family, friends)? do they put themselves at blame?
a gut feeling tells me that jess would be particularly receptible to blaming herself if she was ever at fault for misfortune befalling someone she cares for. i think she'd do anything she can to fix it, but it would be incredibly difficult to convince her that she isn't to blame. even if it's just a simple injury, jess still gets quite fussy and tries to make sure they're doing okay before she can let them off the hook. (really, blame tess for always being so awfully reckless throughout the years)
although, draco on the other hand tends to sometimes realize the severity of potentially fatal injuries. it stems from the fact that his own species is one that heals rather quick, without much trouble. he doesn't really blame himself either, because he finds it too stupid to dwell on who's to blame and who isn't. it's more important to make sure everyone involved is fine, no? basically, he hardly gets really shaken up by it, but sometimes, you'd just wish he'd have a biiiit more concern.
🙈 SEE-NO-EVIL - whats a side of your oc that they don't want to show other people?
jess does put in quite the effort to conceal anything that shows her being too vulnerable. she just finds it... way too uncomfortable. still, there are times where she struggles to keep her head cool, ends up being much too on-the-nose with her emotions and honestly, even afterwards the situation will remain in her mind and she feels frustrated with herself for not getting it together. it bothers her. quite a bit. she does want to keep up a proper image in front of the public but even in front of her friends and loved ones, she just cannot deal with the idea of losing face.
draco actually... doesn't have anything grand to hide? or rather, he has nothing to hide that he feels like would ruin things or that make him feel ashamed. the only thing he would prefer to just dismiss/ignore/not show (you name it) is his relation to his family and their involvement with jupiter enterprises. he just simply finds the expectations other people develop for him that come along with it to be a bother. not to mention, he just cannot stand all the stinky, stuck-up stuff with those people. but it's nothing particularly tragic beyond that. it's just not his vibe.
🙉 HEAR-NO-EVIL - what is the worse thing your oc could hear from someone?
jess: for her efforts to be dismissed and to be told that it's all in vain. she puts a lot of heart into the things she does, especially the things revolving around her passion. for that to be not acknowledged for whatever reason, i think that's the worst thing you could potentially tell her. at least it would guarantee that she wouldn't respect you.
draco: i think he'd hate it if someone were to sort of... constantly try to provoke him? he doesn't have anything specific he'd hate to hear, but he simply just doesn't enjoy it if he gets ridiculed too much. he is a good sport, he can take a few jokes here and there, but he absolutely draws the line if someone tries to make a joke out of him. you really don't wanna try that with him.
