MEET JOSEPHINE "BAMBI" HARLAN

Josephine Harlan, better known to those she worked with as Bambi, had overcome a great deal in her life. Born to parents who had loved her unconditionally at first, Jo’s young life had changed forever when her father was killed in a car accident just a month out from his daughter’s tenth birthday.

After her husband’s sudden death, Amelia Harlan’s attitude towards her daughter had drastically. She had started expecting perfection in everything Jo did, every word she spoke and every interaction she had, and when the young girl failed to meet her mother’s expectations, her reaction was always to attack her daughter with angry words, insulting everything about Jo she could think to tear apart and ranting about how ungrateful and useless her daughter was, to fail the person who had brought her into this world and did everything for her. By the time Jo had made it to high school, she had been suffering from truly terrible self-esteem, a crippling anxiety that left her sobbing in the girls’ bathroom most lunch periods, and virtually no friends, given the fact that her mother essentially chased away anyone she dared bring around the house.

But, seemingly against all odds, she had managed to get away. She had graduated high school with honors, she had used the scholarship she had fought so hard for to attend college in a different state and finally escape her mother and the house she had wanted to get out of for so long, and, after finally graduating with a hard-earned degree in secretarial science, fulfilled a dream she had been nourishing for years: moving to California and applying as a secretary for the United States Navy, where her father had been a yeoman before his untimely death.

The work wasn’t always easy for Jo; given the heavy anxiety she still carried and general fear of people due to her mother’s abuse, she often floundered when attempting to talk to people and constantly did her best to make herself small and unobtrusive… which didn’t always go over well when she was constantly surrounded by higher-ups with big personalities and young Top Gun candidates with loud mouths and souls full of energetic enthusiasm. But she loved her job, loved getting to assist some of the people who helped keep her country safe, and over time she was able to develop friendships with some of the regulars on the Miramar base, even becoming something of a daughter figure to Commander “Viper” Metcalf and Lieutenant Commander “Jester” Heatherly. It was even Jester, in fact, who had given Jo the closest thing she had to a callsign; due to her wide, doe-like eyes, the Top Gun instructor had taken to calling her Bambi, and the name had stuck ever since.

But despite all of this, despite the steps she has made in working through her trauma and overcoming her anxiety, Bambi has still gone her whole life without being in a romantic relationship. There have certainly been men who have been interested in her, some of the younger captains or even Top Gun students who have tried to shoot their shots with their teacher’s pretty secretary, but none of them have been right. The majority of them have been funny and considerate and more than a little good-looking, and Bambi has wanted to like them, but she knows deep down that it’s going to take a very special person to knock down the inner walls she still clings to and truly make their way into her heart.

And when the newest round of Top Gun students, which includes three of the most talented and craziest aviators to ever grace the halls of the Miramar base, rolls in, Bambi doesn’t really expect anything to be different. But in addition to striking up genuine friendships with Dragon and Whiskey (two-thirds of the talented crazies), as well as the rest of the self-named Flyboys, Jo finds herself drawn to one pilot in particular: Marcus “Sundown” Williams, a man as bright and warm as his callsign, who makes the worst puns and smiles at Jo like she’s the only person that’s ever mattered to him.

Bambi is, without a doubt, terrified to fall in love with anyone after all she’s been put through by the person who was supposed to love her the most. But with a little time, some late-night moments spent together (and more than a little meddling by Dragon, Whiskey, and their own loverboys), the nervous secretary might just end up with her aviator and have the happy ending she’s always desired.
