Ok, now, at first I thought that this scene was a flashback, and Nori being behind was a stylistic narrative choice. But one thing bothered me.

His self-inflicted recklessnesses.

I thought, you still have to make a way for your mom somehow, you still have to find her!

Then I realized

This is a flashback yes but not to Noritoshi’s childhood. But to some recent past, where he’s found his mother. And her new, happy family

Look at the shot. His loneliness. The lack of hair loopies.

And this panel

And that’s what this chapter is about, these arcs, Noritoshi and Maki.

Both of them wanted to become heads of their clans and wanted to make space for the people they love. But now those goals have been taken from them. What do they do now they’re bereft of their light, of their anchors?
