End of Year Zuka Tag 2023 Part 1

After two years in this fandom I'm finally doing this! Massive thanks and kisses to @beccalendsahand for all the questions ❤️

It's been a tough year, to say the least. It's gonna take me some time to fully cope with all that happened and decide how I want to see zuka in the future. Regardless, I love this community and the people in it to death, I love the siennes and all the heart they put in what they do, I want to stay for both these groups of people.

Unto the more fun part now ~

1. Sumire no Hana: Did you find a new favourite this year? (Either someone who has entered the company this year or someone who has been in the company a while but you have only just become a fan, or both!)

I have discovered a grand number of three new favourites this year! The first one was Ruri Hanaka who completely blew me away like a tornado with her portrayal of Elisa in The Red and The Black. The emotions and youthful intensity she put in her voice and acting touched me so deeply. That and her shared duet with Arisa Hitomi was so good, their voices fit and harmonised so well and that's really impressive when you're next to a singing powerhouse like Kuracchi.

Another favourite this year was Asanoha Kotono, yet another hana musume for me to stan. I had noticed her before in Paris in the Winter Fog but it was her role as the cool and classy Countess Larisch in Mayerling's shinko, as well as her lead in Singing Lovebirds's shinko, that made me go "oh. oh she's really good". There's a maturity in her performances that I find really interesting, on top of a singing voice that I adore. Funnily enough she was the highlight of a Battlefield for Two for me, in terms of powerful singing and acting, Elsa being one of the only characters that I enjoyed in a show I found pretty meh overall.

And finally, I got a hoshi son this year! Taiki Hayate, whose upcoming shinko lead for RRR I'm extremely excited about. I think I made a mental note to keep tabs on her when she played Jalal al-Din in Dimitri's shinko, and then Stella Voice happened and my god her voice, it's so powerful already. As Tournemain in 1789, she formed an extremely funny combo with Kishou Kazuto and then she went on to destroy us by playing Peyrol in 1789's shinko and it was over for me. I'll just say the whip suits her.

2. Ai sore wa...: Tell us about your number one! What's been your favorite role of theirs this year?

One day I will be normal about Seino Asuka but that day sure hasn't come lol. As they say, "it takes 10 years to make an otokoyaku" and 2023 was Asuka's 10th year in the company. And if 2022 was, as she says herself, the year a switch happened in her mind about what kind of performer she wants to be and how she can get there, 2023 truly felt like the year she showed all the fruits of her years of learning. The energy, the intensity, and especially the fun she puts in her roles and her appearances were so fulfilling, starting with her lead role in Maihime.

Having read the book to prepare for the show, I expected a rather "unheroic" type of protagonist, who ultimately fails to follow the values he first had and abandons his pregnant lover. And yeah, that's what we got. But the way she portrayed him brought him a lot of nuances, an explanation of why he does what he does that doesn't try to absolve him. She's at her best when she delves into the character's psychology and that's what she did here, and I'm so so proud of her.

Who are the understudies for Monte Cristo? Where do we find the information?

They haven’t been announced actually! They might even still be figuring it out 😅

Disclaimer: I haven’t seen Monte Cristo and I don’t know who is onstage at the same time as whom, BUT I think in general the biggest candidates to be understudies are Yuunagi Ryou (for Amahana??), Amaki Homare (for Ayaki??), and maaaybe Soubu Sakiho? I could also see Haruto Yuuho keeping her role + taking Ooki Makoto’s too or something like that. Kisa Kaoru, Yuuhi Maki, and Kishou Kazuto could be understudies as well.

I’m personally pulling for Ouka Rurina to sub for Nijou Hana (and Houma Toa to get literally any more lines than she would have otherwise)

April 2021, Kageki, Ayaki Hikari’s “e to bun” translation - or - the one with all the Montague Information

Okay, alright I am back with another funky little casual and ~* fun *~ translation. Since Ayaki Hikari has an e to bun column right now I, of course, am under legal obligation to read it. Which means that I might as well go ahead and translate it for folks too. And boy, this one is important. If you’re at all interested in the very... very minor details of the background of Hoshigumi’s current production of Romeo and Juliet then I am happy to provide this content to you for the next three months. This month Akachan covered the entirety of the Montagues. By the sounds of it she will hopefully be covering the Capulets next month so look out for that or whatever else it could be when I translate that next month. For now, I leave you with this monstrosity of content, please do enjoy. And know that, yes, I tried my damnedest to make a chart of these relationships and it was just too messy I could not make it work so, good luck.

(4) I have had natural perm-style hair from birth! I am a hot-blooded man with a short temper, but I also have a passionate heart and love my friends.      You all have spoken, and I thank you for making this decision for me. So for the next couple days, between playing FFXIV some more and working on my new WoL character (as well as she is supposed to be a FFXIV version of Black Rock Shooter, so she is two characters in one), I will be revamping this blog. I won’t go super in depth with the muses or anything at first. And there will be a handful of muses who will be ICONLESS until I get either a perfect psd for them, or I feel otherwise.

Okay, this is a good time to read TakaWiki and to learn interesting things from the profiles of the 105th class.

Hoshikaze Nana, a Hoshigumi musumeyaku, would like to play Omitsu from “Kawagiri Bridge” - that’s Kodama Ai’s role! I find it interesting when they have favorites from really old shows. She also plays violin and collects cosmetic tools.

Hitomi Kirari, another Hoshigumi musumeyaku, wants to play Christine from Phantom which is admirable but less surprising. But I still like that she has definite ideas, not just “would like to play various roles”

Hanato Hikari, a Hanagumi otokoyaku, plays cello - I have a celloist in the family so I am partial to that. SHe also does Awa dance - a multitalented woman.

Hanagumi musumeyaku Hoshizora Misaki has reading for a hobby - my kind of person! And her special talent is unicycle.

The special talents of Tsukigumi musumeyaku Kanaha Mio are grabbing snacks and using eyedrops. That’s... surprisingly useful. Clearly a person you’d want as a partner in crime. ;)

Hoshigumi otokoyaku Kishou Kazuto collects Hawaiian items and is nicknamed Maui. In a surprising twist of events, Yukigumi otokoyaku Kishiro Yuriya also collects Hawaiian items. Do they exchange repeat samples in their collections? Do they compete for interesting stuff? I shall probably never know.

The special ability of Kisui Naoto, another Yukigumi otokoyaku, is her ability to sleep anywhere. Did they check that at her entrance exam? “You, go to sleep now! *poke* Okay, you can wake up, you’re accepted - you’ll fit in very well!”

The special talent of Kohana Uta, a Hanagumi musumeyaku, is high jumps, but mostly I just like her name, because it sounds like the word “beloved” in Ukrainian and Polish.

Kotomine Saara, a Yukigumi musumeyaku, has watching Takarazuka as her hobby. She wants to play Juliette from RomiJuri and one of her nicknames is Koala. It’s a good combination *imagines a koala Juliette hanging from the balcony* She has a competitor, though - Neiro Yui, another Yukigumi musumeyaku, also wants to play Juliette, and she’s top of her class (and has reading and reciting English as her special talent)

Hanagumi musumeyaku Marena Yui has core body training as her hobby, high kicks as her special talent and collects little things with ballerinas. This all fits together somehow.

Hanagumi otokoyaku Misora Maru collects comfortable loungewear, can move her eyebrows and play ukulele, loves to laugh with her friends and wants to play everything in MeMy. This also fits together somehow.

Tsukigumi otokoyaku Nanashiro Miyabi collects button-up shirts and loves to gaze at the Mukogawa river. Now I keep imagining her in a SkyStage video, walking romantically along the river in her button-up shirt.

The special talent of Ouka Rurina, a Hoshigumi musumeyaku, is imitating vegetables. I want to see that!

The special talent of Tsukigumi musumeyaku Shizune Hotaru is obstacle courses.

And I thought no one would have anything interesting to say about their names, and then I found Taiki Hayate, a Hoshigumi otokoyaku, whose name apparently is suggesting us the image of “a pegasus filled with hope flying around like a swift wind over the great plains“. Good idea, I approve. As for roles, she especially wants to sing “Ai Areba Koso”, otherwise anything’s good.

All in all, an excellent class, as usual!
