What Stealing Looks Like

From someone who works in retail

Leaving behind empty packages. The only way we can report an item being stolen if we didn’t see the crime with our own eyes is by finding an empty package. If there’s no empty package, it’s very easy to chalk it up to a slightly incorrect inventory. Our inventory is often very incorrect.

Seeing someone lurking around the store for a long period of time not actively engaging in items. It’s suspicious. You know that feeling you get when you see people just loitering around? Similar feeling when you see someone just casually looking at products without really picking up anything to actually buy. Retail employees are bored and WILL follow you around and check the sections you’ve been lurking in.

Looking at items with a big bag/backpack. If you’re really interested in some items and you have a big bag, retail employees are going to watch you leave and then immediately swarm to the items you were looking at.

Being too engaged in products. Maybe you aren’t stealing but it might throw up a red flag. Also interacting with employees an irregular amount. Once again maybe not stealing but we’ll remember you more if you talk to us often. I feel like this should be obvious but you never know.

Anyway, feel free to reblog this to let your followers know what stealing looks like! I’m mostly harping on the first point here. Also please remember it is a federal crime to tamper with security devices and you will be in MORE trouble for doing that than actually stealing sometimes. Not that any of you are stealing of course.

so for those who dont know, you wanna wear some leggings under ur pants. I usually wear BAGGY ass Jean's, that are preferably the darker side cus it's super hard to see any awkward lumps in there.

this tip is literally the only reason I own leggings rn, but yeah you wanna shove your item of choice in under the leggings and it just sits there nice and snug with like no risk of it falling out.

my fave part is if a worker has sussed you out and asks to search ur bag ur chilling with like five shirts in ur ass. (freebbl)

Have I fucked up? Need advice, information, help, or reassurance.

So yesterday I was at $h0pp3r''$ and I got you know a usual lift but... I also got some other stuff. and I think it was those that r gonna get me caught.

I got some eyeshadows, some blushes, you know, nothing out of the ordinary. And then I walked past the perfumes which I'd been thinking about l1fting for a bit. I took a box of N1n@ because i;d been eyeing it for a bit and then I stumbled onto j'Ad0r3 D10r and I couldn't resist the nostalgia of it so I got one.

The clerks were in the back at that time. So I take the boxes, go out to like the diaper section, conceal in a blind spot, and then I come out of the isle and make the most uncomfortable eye contact ive ever had with the clerk who had gone back to her desk. I had nothing in my hands bec I'd already concealed it all.

I'm horrified that they'll somehow find my name and prosecute me, even though I left the store unbothered, and I didn't b33p. I think I'm done with their store like I'm so scared I'll walk in and get fucking arrested. Cause like the other stuff I got was yk a lot but never this much. a bottle of this stuff is like 180 bucks, like it's big, and they only keep 3 on shelves so they probably figured I got one but like ??!!! SHIT I'm so scared!

Am I overreacting??

i need help.

so i recently went to lift some things at sephora and i only grabbed two things. one i put in my pocket and one i put in a smallish bag i got from another store.

when i was walking around i noticed one of the workers there on the phone on call with someone. i pretty much knew he was talking about me right from the beginning since he kept on looking at me.

after a few minutes of me pretending to call someone he came up to me and told me “whatever you have in your bag put it back.” i tried to look apologetic and told him that i just put it in there so i wouldn’t have to hold it. i don’t know if he believed me but id like to think he did.

when i went to tell my boyfriend he said that the worker had been following us from when we entered the store.

what does this mean? does it mean that sephora has a profile for me? or does it mean that we were suspicious. my boyfriend had on a backpack which is very suspicious i understand and i wasn’t all that fond of him bringing it in the first place but i only had a tote full of stuff i bought from trader joe’s and the bag from the other store.

what made me suspicious/is there any way that they would have known that i had lifted from that store before?

i won’t go back anytime soon since it’s the end of the semester and i don’t live in the area so i won’t be back until mid august at the earliest.

i’m just worried.

I didn't get reimbursed but I did get to price match so I got three other things I wanted (so long as it amounted roughly to how much the other order was for. NOW, I HAVE lied to them about not receiving my 0rder, so returning the stuff that doesn't fit isn't really an option, and there were things that DiDn'T FiT. I guess I'm stuck with those unless anyone's interested in pink sweatshorts from Social Tourist in Large.

I did get some new stuff though :) I hope it fits. I'll show you what it is when it ships over.

BAM: funeral. No questions asked, because who would lie about a funeral? noone in their right mind. I am not in my right mind.
