so there's a Stop Making Sense cover album coming out in honor of the movie's 40th anniversary, and i listened to the preview tracks that are out, and the best thing about it so far, for me, is that its reminded me that Girlfriend is Better is a really fucking good song

#i think girl in red's cover is fun but whenever i listen to it i have to listen to the original afterwards and be like DAMN!!! #i don't really like that she jumps into the chorus and 'stop making sense' parts early- kind of messes with the build up of the song for me #the original track is so killer. a song of all time #nothing is better than that!!! #i need a text post tag #i love MUSIC!!!! AAAAAAA (as a casual listener... i don't know like. any fucking music theory or terminology) #the thing about most of the tracks out for the cover album so far #is that they're like. not really very transformative?? they're very straightforward #so hayley williams is obviously having fun and doing a fine job singing burning down the house #but also its like. this isn't bringing anything new to the table for me... very listenable though. burning down the house!!!! #meanwhile in the little preview she's done; miley cyrus is sure putting a spin on psycho killer. but i don't like it #very excited for the full album to drop because i want to hear what kevin abstract does with once in a lifetime #and i love the national but i'm kinda like. can they do anything interesting with Heaven? i hope so! but i'm kinda expecting to be let down #like they'll just cover it straight and it'll be like. yep that sure is the national covering heaven by talking heads #im hoping they'll add something fun with drums... it'd dramatically change the vibe of the song but like. i like the national's drums #at the end of the day i think part of the problem is that talking heads are a tough act to follow

#song of the day #buckle up babes this one's a nice showcase of how my brain retains memories which is to say it's a long path to a close destination #in early 2011 when Leverage's season three had recently wrapped #one of my friends was writing a character study piece for Eliot with a partial focus on his toxic relationship with Damien Moreau #and they made a writing playlist for the fic that included this song #(and also 'Laughing with a Mouth of Blood' by St Vincent. absolutely killer song) #and I like the song but for whatever reason I never looked up anything else by Billy Talent #(I was at the time not spending so much time looking up new music but more just letting it come to me #in 2017 St Vincent came out with 'Los Ageless' and I was like oh I know her!! and I started paying attention to her albums #which is good because then in 2021 she released the Daddy's Home album which has 'Pay Your Way in Pain' /and/ 'The Melting of the Sun' #which are absolutely incredible tracks and my life would've been less without them) #and then today I saw a Call of Duty post with lyrics from Billy Talent's 'Afraid of Heights' #and I didn't recognize the lyrics so I went and pulled up the song as how I do #and as it played I was like. do I know this? no. I know something like this. what is it? #and at first I was convinced I'd just been listening to it but then why couldn't I place it? and then I realized I hadn't heard it recently #but I had been /thinking/ about something /related/ to it--which I had been. sort of. there's a Damien Moreau post queued for tomorrow-- #and then in Afraid of Heights the chorus was wrapping up #'you're the only one I'd follow til the end of time / if we fall we fall together baby don't think twice again' #and something clicked and I dragged 'Diamond on a Landmine' up out of the depths of my various-artists folder #it's a great song got an excellent build to it #'alone at last / I can't wait til we're alone at last / all I wanted was a second chance / a second chance / to hold you in my arms at last #and the visual of 'better watch your step / she's a diamond on a landmine' is fantastic #anyway! I made giant scotch eggs with my family's spicy sausage ball mix instead of the normal breading and they're amazing #a good day #two weeks into May already can you imagine

hey have i ever told you guys that i have a strange (and some say statistically unusual) gift for finding four-leaf clovers?

#these were from today #found in the space of 10 min #while my mother tried to convince me to join a local chorus #she is convinced that the clovers are good signs #however i hate looking for signs like that because life doesn’t make narrative sense #and in the past i’ve put too much stock into ‘signs’ i’ve seen #which leads to building high expectations about whatever the sign signifies #and my expectations never meet reality #usually reality is much worse in fact #so what does that say about the signs #??? #i don’t trust them! #but i’m going to try the chorus anyway #because it’s equally as illogical to always assume the worst i suppose #what’s the worst that could happen?? my mother asked #i said i could embarrass myself or #offend someone by accident #and then i would spend the next 10 years dwelling on it #which to be very clear WOULD be horrible and i am very afraid that that will happen #like that is the worst that could happen but that doesn’t diminish how awful it is #ugh. anyway! chorus meets tomorrow so errrr #wish me luck…. #🍀

last year: yeah I’ve been into musicals for a while but I can’t really say I’m a hardcore fan only because I don’t know much beyond a couple specific shows and I haven’t gotten to see much at all for a while

this year: an entire world of resources has been opened up to me I’ve watched 3 shows 7 times each and have been chewing on this workshop recording with rabid intensity for months

#talking abt musicals #the thing is I actually usually don’t get into musicals by soundtracks #I actually do have to see or know something about the show first #during high school I got mom hooked and we were able to see a pro show or two every year or two #plus I was in this… program? where I got to see free high school productions by volunteering to write reviews #and then some… people would choose which reviews fo publish at the school newspaper or maybe even local papers #I never ended up getting picked so it didn’t really matter #I don’t think any of my reviews were what anybody wanted I didnt know shit about writing like a theater critic #also I have no memory of how I got into this #so other than the pro shows I was also just seeing a lot in general I guess #for… one year? one semester? #and doing stage crew and doing ensemble when I was a senior (bc obviously seniors pass auditions right) #man I was doing chorus and color guard and set building and musical rehearsals that year #and I’m pretty sure some county chorus also #did I really do all that? #wack #no wait yeah I remember I think it was wednesdays mom had to drive me to the local college for chorus rehearsals so that wasnt the hs chorus #anyway it’s because of the review program thing I actually got to see more than I would’ve #but I only remember… wait no it was way more than 3 #it was thoroughly modern millie and chicago and sideshow and once on this island and peter pan #OH AND LITTLE WOMEN #wow I completely forgot about all of that #I remember because sutton foster’s the lead for millie and little women and I was really into sutton foster because of the one song I knew #from drowsy chaperone #WAIT ALSO LES MIS #I remember the high school bridge scene #and then in borders I’d go to the music section and look up cds and listen to them #I don’t think it was as common to upload osts on yt? #and I’m pretty sure we ended up seeing shrek on bway specifically because I wanted to see sutton foster #and then she DISAPPEARED INTO TV
