i was really lukewarm on the retcon arc of hs when it came out, but on reread its really really great. it really really suffers if you dont read it all pretty close together. even after the gigapause, there were regular pauses and the hype just couldnt be sustained any longer.

it really is sad, everything that happened that caused all that to happen. if you don’t know (and this is speculation), hussie was probably entangled in a messy lawsuit during this period with the original devs he contracted to make hiveswap. instead, they took a bunch of money and used it to make a different game, and barely touched homestuck. just to get the remaining money back, hussie probably had to lawyer up and sign an NDA. then after that, he built his own game studio from scratch and basically start all over. of course this is all on top of the animation work he was doing for collide and act 7. homestuck ran for 7 years and the last 20% took 3 of those.

its really sad. homestuck, the fandom, and the finished game all probably suffered because of that

more homestuck observations!! i didn’t realize how long sburb sessions can go on for! i guess inever did the math before or whatever and because the beta kids’s session occurs over a breezy 24 hours (triple that for Dave of course). the trolls are in game for a little less than a month (but only in the meteor for a few hours). then the alpha kids’ session (summed up in one flash) actually lasts from November to April. 5 months! thats a long time to just be chillin. then of course, the pre-scratch troll game was doomed from the start, leaving all the dancestors stuck in the game for 6 years!! they spent their entire teenage lives in the incipisphere.

its like... i dunno thats a long ass time

ok ive reached the point in homestuck where i originally transitioned to reading it as it came out (openbound games). its also approximately the point where updates began slipping from daily, to weekly, to year-long hiatuses

homestuck reread upd8 im about halfway through act 6 (aka “part 3″ as if that has any meaning whatsoever) and my feelings are... uneven

after openbound the alpha kids enter their session, the storytelling is getting really uneven. and i think ive kind of figured out why. early homestuck is too long, obsessing over minutiae and getting easily distracted because of the user submission format a bit. 

once hussie took over the narrative completely, he began to abridge events a lot more. Act 5 in total covers a lot more material than the first 4 or so, but pretty effectively excises a lot of the fat without losing much of the story or relying too heavily on exposition dumps. Act 6 continues this even through the throwback to the original format with the new kids (even with all of the wrinkles from )(IC).

but in getting to the actual means to destroy LE, as well as his genesis, I think Hussie starts to rush a little bit to get to the end. Long amounts of time, including rather important or interesting events, are skipped over and explained later. Aranea (and the confusing “narrative prompt”) basically exists to explain things in text dumps. And just... when reading it all together instead of over many weeks its kind of tiring

whoops last reply cut off but yeah the only thing holding me back is knowing how fucking pathetic the ending is :/ idk about you but i'm MASSIVELY disappointed by how everything wrapped up

I’m probably a defender in that respect. The ending isn’t great, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. The main problem was how long the last few chapters took to come out, really sucked the wind out of the proverbial sails. It made an “okay” ending more “widely disliked”.

That’s actually one of the things I’m curious to reread. Does it feel better when you read it all together? Does it soften the letdown blow a bit?

a lot of them, especially terezi and aradia, have grown on me while reading this time... i think ill do that once i get to cascade (like really soon).

see i'm almost always for poly ships however davekat is my one exception because they are just gods gift to the yaois. weirdly, i have a hard time seeing john with anyone? i dunno why. i was into johnvris and johnroxy for a bit but something about the credits made me reconsider those

while im thinking about this, its kind of amazing how the homestuck ost matches some of the sensations you get from reading the comic. in particular, the recurring use of motifs, parallelism, and general self-reference. its actually harder to find a totally original homestuck track than it is to find one that samples from like 5 others. and with purpose too, usually to highlight similar events or characters in a significant way. 

like for example Ocean Stars Falling is a beautiful sort of optimistic piece and then you realize its taken from a song off the squiddles album. now, if you wanted you could use this info to think about the song’s sort of... meaning. the squiddles are tied to the horrorterrors who glubbed up the dream bubbles and suddenly you have this song that might actually be about the afterlife? and you get very confused

or another one! Expedition from volume 9 seems to have a very “jake” vibe with its fully orchestrated, horn-heavy sound. but then you stop like wait, that sounds kind of familiar and then you’re like fuck its just lord english’s theme crossed with Explore and you hate it for being clever

one thing i did consider when getting to these later acts in hs is that i can remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i first read certain pages. For example, the morning Act 6 Act 4 released, I was eating breakfast in my dad’s kitchen. I had a bowl of mini wheats and watched the flash like 3 times in a row.
