Lecture 20: Authenticity has been the key to success in the world of hip hop. Because African Americans essentially created and have long dominated the genre, it has not always been easy for whites to break into it. One of the exceptions is Eminem (a.k.a., Marshall Mathers III), who began with a weak debut album (1996’s Infinite) but soared to the heights of fame with his highly successful ‘99 sophomore release, The Slim Shady LP. This song, “Cleainin’ Out My Closet,” is one of his most iconic tunes, off of his 2002 album The Eminem Show. The song features his trademark intensely dramatic style, although Eminem could also display a razor-sharp irreverent sense of humour and penchant for the absurd, as evident – for example – in his hilarious music video for “Without Me” (see here).

Nothing is known of his father, it is only slightly clear about what he was doing before the events of 8 Mile. According to Future he's a "lyrical genius" and would likely have been writing and performing songs for a few years . He was in a relationship with Jeneane, which ended just before the events of the film.
At the beginning of 8 Mile, we see him preparing for a rap battle at The Shelter, an underground club. He is clearly nervous and vomits before the show. He takes the stage to face Lil' Tic (Proof), but much to his embarrassment he chokes and leaves the venue in disgrace.
The rest of the film focuses on his life and deciding about how he wants to make it in the rap game. After losing his job at a pizza parlour and splitting up with Jeneane, he's forced to move back in with his mother who lives in a trailer park with his young sister Lily. There is immediate heated conflict with his mother's boyfriend Greg Buehl who was at one time only a couple of years above Rabbit at school. Jimmy at some point started working at a pressing plant in New Detroit Stamping in order to earn some money, but it was not enough for him to sustain himself properly; he was also scolded constantly at work by his boss for being late and not taking responsibility for this.
When he isn't working, he's seen hanging out with his friends Future (the rap battle host), Sol, DJ Iz and Cheddar Bob who are in their own way social outcasts and dream about finding their way out of the ghetto and living a life of luxury.
His other friend Wink sees that B-Rabbit is a talented lyricist and rapper and has connections with WJLB a radio station that has access to studios and promotes the work of other artists. Wink is also an associate of The Leaders Of Tha Free World, a gang that serves as the central rivals towards Jimmy and the rest of the Three One Third crew, Wink never attacks jimmy during his associations with his gang rivals.
Whilst working one day, he sees a blonde girl by the name of Alex Laterno - who's looking for her brother. Immediately, there is a spark between them. They meet again later on at a parking lot gathering and both end up at the proceeding abandoned house party. She reveals that she is an aspiring model with the intention of getting hooked up and going to New York. She shows up at his work one day during lunch break and witnesses him free-styling with some other employees. She is impressed and suggests he 'takes her somewhere'; they end up having sex in a hidden part of the plant. They start a brief relationship which essentially ends when he catches Wink and Alex having sex in one of the studios where Wink works, after Wink organizes a photoshoot for Alex. A fight breaks out and Jimmy leaves. That night as Jimmy goes to collect his sister Lily (who was at a neighbors because their mother was intoxicated after Greg had left her following her impending eviction) he's confronted by Wink who has completely aligned himself with Papa Doc's gang and they proceed to attack him.

In ‘99, Eminem dissed Aaliyah, and several other women in his diss track “Get You Mad” off his “The Slim Shady LP”; which is a Special Edition Bonus Track? The album was released February 23, 1999.
Aaliyah (who was 20 at the time; Eminem was 27) was not too happy about this track, and rumor has it, when she saw Eminem at the album release party May 2000, she demanded an apology and Eminem apologized right then and there.

i understand why people are against factkin when it comes to recently alive people or currently alive people. not that I think it can be controlled but some people need to seriously stop glorifying and putting certain sources out there so publicly at the least. But all arguments against factkin fall apart when you think about it in the context of ancient historical figures, people who died over a thousand years ago have no real effect on the people alive today and it's hard to claim it's disrespectful because what we know about said figures beyond that point is likely a caricature and we'll never know how they truly were and what truly happened in their life. So I DONT understand the absolutely-no-factkin attitude in the wider kin community. No matter what you believe there's sections of this community that are entirely harmless and respectful, so why do people act like it's evil?
There is no point in drawing lines as to which factkin are acceptable and which ones are not. Kintypes do not equal behaviour. They can influence it, sure, but at the end of the day peoeple are responsible for their own actions.
Speaking as someone who has a medieval kintype, a Victorian kintype, a Renaissance kintype, a recently deceased kintype and a kintype that is currently alive: I don't understand why people are uncomfortable with some of my kintypes and not others. I mean, I understand that there is a reason given. It's the reason that makes no sense to me.
If I can be Peter III of Aragon, who lived in the 1200's, I can be Eminem. The situation is not actually that different. Yes, it is different in that one is alive and one is not, but these are both famous people who have lived in this universe whom I identify as on a spiritual level and will never personally meet. If I did hypothetically meet either of them would I tell them that I'm factkin? No! Marshall Mathers would definitely think it was weird and Peter would probably have me executed for claiming to be him (the king) because he wouldn't understand what the words "factkin" and "multiverse" mean! The stipulation that "only dead factkin are okay" makes no sense to me because these two identities feel the exact same to me and I am not doing anything to hurt anyone regardless!
The other reason this stipulation makes no sense to me is the fact that who is alive and who is dead changes literally every minute. At the risk of sounding insensitive: I am David Bowie and as of 2016 he is dead. Was it "wrong" for me to be David Bowie prior to his death? Is it okay now? At what time does it become okay? Some people say "it's not okay because his relatives could be upset by it" but then I'd like to bring up Edgar Allan Poe! His descendants are still alive. Am I hurting them? I can't see how I would be: I don't know who they are and they don't know who I am.
I understand that people feel differently about different parts of the factkin community but it seems like so many people draw lines arbitrarily. People are individuals and a having a kintype does not make you a bad person. Likewise, a kintype is not an excuse for bad behaviour. Remember: most factkin aren't stalkers and most stalkers aren't factkin. Is there a small population of that venn diagram that overlaps? Probably. You know what other venn diagram overlaps? People who eat lobster and stalkers. People who make furniture and stalkers. Correlation is not causation. Just because there is a population that does both things does not mean one causes the other.
In my mind there is no viable reason to support some parts of the factkin community and not others. No kintype is "evil" because being otherkin is not an action with moral weight.

Eminem: A Year in Review, 2022
From turning half a century old, late in the year, to being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Eminem has had a stellar year. The year 2022 was a busy time in the top-selling artist’s career. He marked 20 years for 2 albums in his repertoire, The Eminem Show as well as the 8 Mile Soundtrack. Celebrating both, two new anniversary albums were created & brought out with extra songs for them both including a handful of instrumentals on each. There was also an album created for his many, many hits: Curtain Call 2. All three projects came with posts online offering clothing, collectibles & more. A lyric video for the great 2010’s Won’t Back Down, featuring Pink, was a highlight for some fans that have been enjoying the skills put into Eminem’s lyric videos that are included in Shady Records signed artists’ videos as well. In part of the celebrations for Curtain Call 2, Eminem’s cover of the album was made into a mural in his hometown, Detroit, Michigan USA.
Further, Eminem was part of the all-star Hip-Hop halftime show at the 56th Superbowl which made history as the first ever all hip-hop/R&B line-up. To celebrate the season Eminem gave us Shady Football that offered a clothing line to enjoy. His restaurant, Mom’s Spaghetti Detroit celebrated big in New York as well as Los Angles & also hit their first year in business at a stationary location. As well, Marshall’s memorabilia shop, The Trailer, located above Mom’s Spaghetti in Detroit, had also been up & running for a year as of September 29th, 2022. As well, this year fans saw Marshall make it out to be a wonderful piece of the Detroit Lions Football club’s Hardknocks series on HBO Plus. Eminem made his fans truly happy to see him sporting sunglasses & a smile at the event, showing the world he was full of quick wit & good humor. In early Fall this year Eminem was XXL Magazine’s cover once again, but this time for their 25th Anniversary issue. Along with the cover Marshall gave us an incredible article & an equally incredible photo shoot. It was an amazing year for the fans of Eminem, even without the “new” album some wanted so badly.
Getting in on the fun, Eminem took part of the B.A.Y.C’s (Bored Ape Yacht Club) spree that was running like wildfire during 2022. Doing videos, making appearances & performing came from this venture in 2022 for Eminem. To give fans an incredible look into the man behind the amazing art, Marshall & friends separately took a seat with PaulPod, a podcast that spanned weeks with manager Paul Rosenberg at the helm. The Youtube’s 50 Million Subscribers Club, Minions, Elvis, Shazam, UFC & Spiderman all meant something to Eminem fans as he joined all of these aforementioned in this year, 2022. Eminem took you to the cleaners, he took you to the trailer park. He also gave us his early musical influences (over 100 listed) on Spotify & so much more – all for his fans. What will 2023 have in store for our favorite superhero, Marshall B. Mathers III? Only time will tell. One thing I’ve learnt - you can’t rush an artist for their art, they must feel it so that you will, in turn, feel & experience it yourselves. The saying goes: All good things to those who wait. 2023 – here we come! ~
