War memorials would traditionally depict a triumphant General on horseback, or some grand arch. This would change after the #CivilWar with #MartinMilmore’s Roxbury Soldiers Monument that you can find at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain. . Milmore presented the ordinary fighting man in a statue sometimes known as the #StandingSoldier- and you will find hundreds of copies inspired by Milmore in town squares all over the nation east of the Mississippi. . The memorial pictured here is a bronze copy by Milmore of his original in JP, but you’ll find this one in Amherst, New Hampshire. #memorialday #newhampshire #sculpture (at Amherst, New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeM8lYCMqYB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The John Glover House- Marblehead, Massachusetts . . John Glover (Born 1732) was an American fisherman, rum trader and General in the Continental Army. His schooner “Hannah” was among the first ships commissioned by George Washington for use and thus Glover/Marblehead have been called the Birthplace of the US Navy. . The Marblehead militia led by Glover aided in the #SiegeofBoston, and Glover’s Regiment was key in saving Washington and the Continental Army after their defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn/Long Island. The American Army was trapped in their trenches on Brooklyn Heights until #JohnGlover and his “amphibious regiment” ferried the troops across the East River to safety in Manhattan. . Perhaps most famously Glover’s Regiment coordinated Washington’s crossing of the Delaware in a surprise attack on Hessian Mercenaries for The Battle of Trenton on the morning of December 26, 1776. . You’ll find a statue of John Glover by sculptor #MartinMilmore on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Boston’s Back Bay. Glover returned to Marblehead after the war and is Buried in the Old Burial Ground in Marblehead. #newengland_igers #historical #historichomes #americanhistory #americanrevolution #somestatuesofboston #navy #usnavy #marblehead #marbleheadma #marbleheadmassachusetts (at General John Glover House) https://www.instagram.com/p/CObVDnDFse4/?igshid=u4nbdj1qm1rd

A “Standing” or “Citizen” soldier #CivilWar Monument- Chester, Vermont. In the 1860s and 70s several sculptors including Carl Conrad & #MartinMilmore began working on war memorials focusing on the average soldier who went off to fight. Mostly contemplative, weapon down at their side. As you can see on the inscription here, most common soldiers were buried on, or near the battlegrounds where they fell and their bodies never returned home (commissioned officers might be the exception). A list of names of the fallen became an important motif in memorials to the Civil War, with some towns and cities forgoing statuary all together and just installing an inscribed tablet- occasionally in a building such as a library dedicated as a memorial #standingsoldier #citizensoldier #warmemorial #chestervermont (at Chester, Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMvOoOSFqf8/?igshid=12aeq2hdqsshi
