Japanese “Complete” Editions/ Year 1 DLC Compilations
What a time to be alive, knowing that every game’s launch can only offer a glimpse of a game’s true, and inevitable potential. Just as we the player play through a new game for the first time, exhausted devs are continuing development, patching in and improving on all the things that Fan Support/Communications has probed from the fan base as being problem areas and/or commonly desired content. An entire year of support, or more as in FFXV’s case. New edition with all DLC, except the DLC that comes out after this incomplete anniversary edition! Yikes. And yet.... I love it. Let’s rank these three ‘complete’ editions from 3 of the best legacy J-franchises that are well represented in the 8th-gen era by these stand-out, well-supported, incomplete-at-launch titles.
MGSV The Definitive Experience: Ground Zeroes + Phantom Pain
Now that MGSurvive has officially put the nail in the Konami + Kojima coffin, this version of MGSV now stands as the last true Kojima-semi-approved release, combining the weird tech demo/prequel Ground Zeroes and its Raiden-featuring Jaime Vu mission as well as all of Phantom Pain + DLC items and a neat Déjà Vu mission, plus all updates to MGS Online 3. If you got this thing, along with the MGS Legacy Colletion on PS3, you near-about have the whole series save for Rising Revengence I suppose (And portable ops and twin snakes).
Survive obviously should have been a big dlc expansion for mgsv, released as a sort of apology to people who are still reasonably mad about the seemingly truncated ending to mgsv, but as for now, I’ll just have to wait a year or two for those to find their way to bargain bins so Konami has less of a chance of processing my purchase. As this game stands, despite it’s dark, corporate misgivings and short-comings, I still think it’s a strait up masterpiece. Say what you will about it’s plot and what it does with the lore, but these are the best, most precise and enjoyable controls and levels in the entire series. And it’s nice to have the optimal version of things I guess. B+
Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition
I’m still not sure quite how I feel about RE7, but I think when taken wholistically, as in the base game plus the awkward-but-okay End of Zoe and the free Not a Hero Chris Redfield-featuring chapter and other odds-and-ends compiled here, I feel ‘pretty good’ about it. There’s something still weird and uncanny valley to me about RE trying so hard to capture American-style horror set in the south specifically that feels a little out-of-their-element, but hey that’s why they added a Chris Redfield chapter. His appearance alone makes this feel more like an actual RE game than an odd, but promising, VR-focused spin off. There’s like 4 added chapters and a couple of added modes like a horde-mode type thing that rounds out the experience. I kind of want multiplayer for this but I’m glad they’re okay with not adding this. All in all, this is a solid take on a weird but solid take on a old franchise that has no business being any better than RE6 was so that’s cool.
FFXV Royal Edition
Only one here guilty of not actually being ‘complete’ since Square has promised a whole ‘nother year of support for this bad boy. That almost seems excessive, but then again, year 1′s support was kind of sick honestly, and if they’re adding end-game dungeon/bosses, lore-stuff AND updating the online multiplayer more, than fuck this is gonna be a game I continue to hit up throughout the year once again, and like I guess I’m cool with that but damn Square. As it stands, this version basically has a shit ton on it’s own, and since the single-player main-game at this point is pretty heavily optimized, I’ll inevitably be starting my third fresh file for this in a few days to experience it all over again. I am a mindless slave to Square / DLC / Games-as-a-service business models. I have no standards and vote for more bland, corporate, focus-group-tested content with my wallet. content. contenttttttttt~

Good for you that you like Metal Gear Survive but I don't know about buying the game myself. It's an okay game, but for what it stands for in terms of video games as a whole, Konami as a whole, and everything else, I don't recommend supporting it. This might be a bandwagon thing, but I honestly can't help but agree with the stigma that people should not buy the game as it would be supporting Konami's less than favorable practices
Hey, it’s all a matter of opinion and tastes in products, I happen to like the style in mgsurvive and a lot of people don’t, everyone’s got their preferences
