The 1,000 or so people who live in the central Pennsylvania borough of Milesburg are a lucky bunch -- they have a proper general store to call their own. Oh, how I wanted to go inside Fisher's Market, but @hopelessnostalgic and I swung by shortly after they'd closed for the day. Just look at this beauty. It's pretty much what a general store should look like, seemingly plucked out of central casting. But it's the real deal, complete with soda privilege signage and a charming awning. It is set in a Victorian house, where a general store has existed since 1879, according to Bellefonte.com. It was founded by a certain W.B. Miles, and ended up in the hands of the Fisher family in 1988. As Bellefonte.com explains, "Milesburg has retained something most towns have not, a historic, family-owned country store. These stores tie us to memories of people we loved and a time in our past that we miss." LIONS CLUB NEWS

Howard Area Lions Club will have a change in their Food Bank distribution for September because of the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 7. The Food Bank will be held on Sept. 14 for residents of Centre County that live in the Lions Club Food Bank area. The distribution for those residents that live in the Beech Creek area of Clinton County will be held on Sept. 21. Food bank hours are now from noon-3 at the former Beech Creek Elementary School. Those coming for food aid should remain in your vehicles and wear a mask when approached by the food bank workers. Please bring your empty boxes back each month so the Lions can refill them for the food distribution. The Howard Area Food Bank contact person is Lion Ron Davy who can be reached at (570) 962-2407.

CANCELLATIONS

Country Music Jam at the Howard Fire Hall that is usually held the fourth Sunday afternoon of the month has been cancelled for Aug. 23. Call Connie at 625-2724 for info on the Back Porch String Band.

The Miles and Kathryn Meckley family reunion scheduled for Labor Day at Bald Eagle State Park has been canceled. For info call Pam at (814) 404-4598.

The Nittany Valley Amish Benefit Dinner scheduled for Sept. 19 has been cancelled because of the pandemic gathering restrictions. The first two meals in the spring had to be canceled, too. If you already made a reservation and paid for your meal you can get a refund by calling Katie at (814) 383-2008.

TAX EXTENSION

Residents of Curtin and Liberty Townships will be given an extension on paying their Centre County taxes. According to Joyce McKinley from the Centre County Tax Office the due date for paying the face amount has been extended until Sept. 30, 2020. Questions can be directed to your local tax collector whose telephone number is shown on your tax bill.

FARMERS MARKET

There’s a Farmers Market every Thursday morning at Valley Ace Hardware parking lot in Milesburg. Vendors are usually there selling until mid-afternoon. More vendors are encouraged to come set up your stands and can stop by the store or call (814) 355-5451 to learn more details.
