There's a buzz in Ecruteak City when she arrives - there are rumors of a ghoul wandering the streets, and the pool outside of the Bellchime Path had been befouled, oily sludge floating atop the water and spreading a sickening shade of black across the surface.

The Burned Tower sways with the wind and creaks as it always did. The lower floors are covered in shadows and Matsuba's voice, warbled with worry, drifts from the darkness when he hears her approaching.

"Yuri? You heard my message then. Just...set the seals over there, I'll grab them."

And he does -- he gives a bit of time for Yuri to get ready before there's a golden ring that appears in the air before her. After a moment, a pink hand pulls the bottom of the ring into a circular doorway that shows the garden archways of the Pasio arena.

Hoopa giggles as he floats before her, looking delighted for the moment, before he steps aside for her.

It's a sweet gesture from the shrine maiden, for sure, but she is lucky he wasn't having a fragmentation flare up. Platonic affection would had quickly gotten very complicated.

Holding his face and kissing the bridge of his nose sweetly, because honorable mention first love is this man who modeled every facet of her taste in people now as an adult.

He relaxes into the touch of Yuri's hands instantly, leaning down a bit so she can reach his face without standing on her tip-toes. It brings a sweet smile to his face as he feels her kiss his nose, and he leans up to return the gesture to her forehead, butting his head to hers in response.

"I'm glad you're okay."

The first text goes unanswered while he's training for the morning - and the second one comes before he can answer it.

It does, however, make him laugh pretty heartily.

The letter is dropped off by the Clefable that used to follow Yuri around, now living with Matsuba and his old man of a Gengar. She smiled and formally offered it to him before going off to be by her beloved Gengar's side.

The letter had the seal of the Tsuchiya clan stamped on the back, making this an official missive from the head of Hangetsu Shrine, now Yuri after her mother's passing.

[Matsuba-dono,

I would like to formally discuss you taking on the title of Guardian. You are, of course, not obligated to take it on, but I make the offer nonetheless, as you have always been a longstanding friend and protective force in my life. I would be honored if you accepted this.

Sincerely, Yuri.]

He takes the letter off his desk when it's set down, shrugging his coat off and hanging it by the door as he flips it to look at the seal on the back. He recognized that seal - and of course he knew what it entailed.

Reading the message made him pause. He could just call her, but he should write back as well....make things official.

So, he sat to do just that.

Yuri,

The honor is entirely mine. It is a position as old as Ecruteak City, and one I would take gladly.

Name the time and place and I will see to it my schedule works with yours.

He didn't sign it with a signature, instead digging through his things to find his family seal to stamp at the bottom, before folding it and doing the same to the return envelope.

He looked to Clefable, offering it out.

"Can you take this to Yuri for me?"

"I think only if I implied I was upset at the match. It's kind of an old fashioned practice - my family doesn't really arrange marriages anymore, except for my eldest cousin in Kitakami..."

A bunch of Clefairy are riding in the same train car, watching Matsuba, but also looking out the windows.

He's not surprised by their presence, even as he's tapping at his phone to update his trainers and his family that he was going to Saffron City.

He does bend down to help one of the Clefairy up into the seat beside him - he's decided to stand, hanging onto the railing.

"Can you all get about? I don't know if Sabrina will have space in her car for all of us."

Random headcanon question: how many times has someone accidentally gotten seriously/severely injured while traversing Matsuba's gym, before even being able to face him?

no extremely serious injuries, but definitely sprains and twisted ankles from falling. matsuba made sure not to set it up in such a way that someone's going to get extremely hurt if they step off.

the few injuries that have happened, matsuba has offered to pay for or even heal himself. if they seem to be having a really serious amount of trouble, then he'll switch the lanterns to light the path and go dark behind the trainer rather than having them be dark and light up over time.

Sitting together on a bench, watching some fireworks fly up and colour the night sky, Yuri turned and pressed her lips to Lear's cheek in a show of affection while Hoopa snickered nearby with the group of giggly Clefairy.

Fireworks were a common occurrence in Pasio, particularly in months so packed with holidays as these. He's glad to be watching them with her, the sky lit up in shades of red and gold, when she leans up to press a kiss to his cheek.

He jolts at the feeling, his face turning pink. Hopefully he can blame it on the cooling weather.

"Ah! Ha. Are you enjoying yourself tonight, Lady Yuri?"
