The base Jetta gets an old-school torsion-beam rear suspension, but the GLI upgrades that hardware to a multilink independent setup. Combined with the GLI’s beefier roll bars and stiffer springs, this sedan is definitely ready to play. The standard infotainment setup uses a tiny 6.5-inch display, but the Autobahn bumps that up to a nicer 8.0-inch screen running VW’s latest MIB3 technology. This system can handle multiple Bluetooth phone pairings at once, and I love that the screen is angled towards the driver so it’s easy to see and reach. MIB3’s menus are laid out thoughtfully so there isn’t a big learning curve, either. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and in addition to a wireless charging pad, there are three USB-C ports and a 12-volt outlet to keep your devices juiced.
The Autobahn trim has Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit, a 10-inch customizable gauge cluster that gives the driver all kinds of information like vehicle data, driver-assistance feature status and audio and phone access. It can also be customized with different designs, including a full-screen navigation view. It’s not quite as fancy-pants as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, but it’s essentially the same idea, and one of my favorite car interior features.

It’s a bit of a bummer that the GLI isn’t offered with any quirky interior design touches like the GTI hatchback’s plaid seats. All you’ll find here is black cloth or optional leather with contrasting red stitching. The Jetta at least has a 10-color LED ambient lighting system that coordinates with your selected driving mode: white for Normal, red for Sport and blue for Eco. If that doesn’t suit your mood, you can choose your own colors, as well.
Like the standard Jetta, the GLI’s interior materials are good but not great. Some of my colleagues lament the cheaper plastics and too-soft seats, especially since the GTI’s cabin feels more premium by comparison. The sedan’s trunk is fairly spacious at 14.1 cubic feet, and my 5-foot, 9-inch frame fits just fine in the rear seat — my knees don’t touch the front seatbacks and my head doesn’t brush the roof.
As far as competitors go, you can still snag a Honda Civic Si, or the all-wheel-drive Mazda3 Turbo is a good option, though it’s more expensive. The new Hyundai Elantra N Line has a little less power than the GLI, but it’s also offered with a manual transmission and has some seriously cool design. The Subaru WRX is another alternative, but it’s getting a little old, and the Jetta is a nicer all-around car.
The GLI certainly flies under the radar.

Of course, the GLI’s biggest competitor is the GTI sitting next to it in the VW showroom, and the Jetta undercuts its Golf equivalent by a few thousand dollars while still providing basically the same on-road thrills. The GTI’s hatchback design is a lot more practical, but the GLI feels like an altogether more grown-up package — though it’s still more than willing to get a little rowdy.

Review: How the 2020 Nissan Sentra SR Ups Nissan’s Game (and Where It Falls Short)
Maybe you’ve heard this story before: Nissan’s redesigned compact sedan seeks to steal more Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic buyers. The difference is that this time, it may work more effectively. Track-testing and extensively driving the new 2020 Nissan Sentra reveals how far the automaker has elevated its compact. The 2020 Sentra won’t dominate the sales charts, but our time with an SR tester shows where the new Nissan excels … and falls short against the aging class leader.
First off, let’s take a moment to mark the Sentra’s progress. When we last tested a mainstream-trimmed model, that 2016 Sentra SL eventually hit 60 mph in 10.0 seconds. Our 2020 Sentra SR tester was nearly 200 pounds heavier than that basic commuter car, but the new Nissan benefits from a more powerful engine. All 2020 Sentras are motivated by a 149-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated I-4. That doesn’t sound like much power, and, well, it’s not. But its 8.0-second 0–60 time is not only right in the mix with key competitors, it’ll probably feel excellent for anyone driving a 10-year-old compact sedan.
Having said that, every 2020 Civic EX and up will be about a full second quicker to 60 mph, thanks to that car’s 1.5-liter turbo-four. The Volkswagen Jetta is also swifter, using its 1.4-liter turbo-four to hit 60 in only 7.6 seconds. You’re considering the Corolla, too, right? A Corolla XSE we tested crossed 60 in 8.2 seconds and actually felt just as peppy as a quicker Civic tested in the same comparison. Just know that if you don’t get the Corolla SE or XSE, Toyota saddles the compact with an engine we called loud and underpowered. With the Sentra, even if you don’t go big like our orange-and-black SR tester, you still get the decent 149-hp engine.

Like almost every other compact sedan around, the 2020 Sentra uses a CVT. Normally, I’m a huge fan of CVTs, which—when well tuned—can make commuting drudgery the tiniest bit more livable. Their smoothness means you don’t feel the shift-shock you might in a conventional automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the 2020 Sentra’s CVT tries too hard to mask the fact that it’s working with only 149 hp. As we noted in our First Drive review, the Sentra is a little surgey at low speeds. It’s a tuning affectation Nissan should fix for the 2021 or 2022 Sentra, along with a curious behavior that makes coming to a smooth stop slightly difficult.
Otherwise, the 2020 Sentra’s brake pedal is tuned for commuting, with a soft initial bite. The 2019 VW Jetta GLI Follows the GTI’s Template
Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised; other times it’s not. The latest iteration of Volkswagen’s Jetta GLI seems to be exactly what we were expecting—a return to being a GTI with a trunk—and that’s about as pleasant a nonsurprise as we could ask for.
We’ll list the details, but hard-core VW aficionados can probably guess ’em on their own. The turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter EA288 four-cylinder delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel (for those keeping track, that’s 18 hp and 41 lb-ft more than the previous-gen GLI) and drives the front wheels through a six-speed stick or a seven-speed DSG auto. There’s a torque-sensing limited-slip diff and bigger brakes. The suspension uses struts up front and a multilink independent rear setup in place of the regular Jetta’s torsion beam, all tuned for a sportier drive and sitting 0.6 inches lower than the standard Jetta. If all this sounds familiar, it should: It’s pretty much a carbon-copy of the GTI’s spec sheet.
As expected, there are plenty of visual cues to differentiate the GLI from lesser Jettas. The blacked-out grille gets red trim, there’s a spoiler on the trunklid, and the brake calipers are painted in red, as on the GTI. The 18-inch wheel design is unique to the hottest Jetta. Red stitching and accents bring some color to the all-black interior. Obviously, the big discussion among VW heads will be GLI vs GTI, sedan versus hatchback. With the GLI’s larger size, you might expect weight to be the defining factor. But while VW hasn’t published a curb weight for the new GLI, the regular Jetta outweighs the Golf by a mere 15 to 25 pounds depending on trim and transmission, and we don’t expect much difference between the sportiest versions, either. We’re hatchback fans ourselves, for whatever that’s worth.
We found the previous-gen Jetta GLI to be a little too cushy and not as tossable as we’d have liked, and it lived its life in the long shadow cast by the excellent and well-rounded GTI, although it was still a massive improvement over the base-model Jetta. The latest, MQB-platform-based Jetta is a much better driving car (the Golf and GTI are also on the MQB architecture), so perhaps the new GLI will comport itself more in the manner of its hot-hatchback sibling. If it does, they’ll be able to hear us cheering in Wolfsburg.

2019 Kia Forte EX First Test: 0-60 Isn’t Everything
The 2019 Kia Forte exceeded my expectations when I drove it at a launch event in Pittsburgh. Many of these events limit your driving opportunities to pristine roads that make the car feel smoother than it really is, but Kia’s route subjected the Forte to harsh pavement where it kept its composure. Now we’re driving the Forte on the often-rougher streets of L.A., and we haven’t lost any love for the small sedan.
A 2019 Kia Forte EX Launch Edition is shown here. The car tested for this review lacked the $3,210 Launch Edition package that adds LED headlights, a power sunroof, adaptive cruise control, a 320-watt sound system, and more.
Here’s a quick rundown of the changes Kia made to the third-generation model. Along with an updated design, it features a more rigid platform. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine still makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, but it receives Atkinson cycle technology and a cooled EGR system to enhance efficiency. A six-speed manual is available once again, but the big news is that Kia replaced the six-speed automatic with its very first CVT.
Kia has taken strides to make the Forte a more mature entry this year. The automaker tried to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness with more adhesive and thicker glass for the front side windows. The 8.0-inch touchscreen that sits on the dashboard is an improvement, responding quickly to touch and taking up less space than the old 7.0-inch screen.
Kia succeeded in making a quiet and polished compact sedan. It rides well at city and highway speeds, shielding occupants from more noise than you’d expect of a car in this segment. Although its quiet nature will put the Civic on watch, it’s not as quick as the segment stalwart.
Our Forte tester, a top-trim EX model, ran from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds. This makes it just 0.2 second quicker than an old 2017 Forte we tested. In comparison, our 2016 Honda Civic Touring long-termer with the optional turbo engine hit the mark in just 6.8 seconds. The Forte straddles two other mainstream compact sedans we’ve tested, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta SEL at 7.8 seconds and the 2019 Hyundai Elantra Limited at 9.0 seconds.
Although its acceleration won’t turn any heads, the Forte excels in another area. It completed the figure eight in 26.8 seconds at an average of 0.63 g. That’s impressive considering the Civic took 27.4 seconds to round the bends at 0.64 g. It also came in ahead of the Jetta (27.6 seconds at 0.62 g) and Elantra (27.7 seconds at 0.60 g). That’s not to mention the previous Forte, which clocked 27.5 seconds at 0.61 g.
The Forte’s steering feel is somewhat heavy at higher speeds, which makes handling seem a bit sportier than it really is. Still, the Forte’s steering is reasonably precise, enough to enjoy corners and canyon roads. The leatherette seats on our model were a bit stiff over long drives, however. Despite a less-than-perfect CVT, it benefits from solid braking, sufficient passing power, a quiet ride, satisfying steering, and a functional interior. The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is a sharp-dressed sedan with oodles of tech
Like any good compact sedan, the seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra offers something for everyone. If you’re looking for a fuel-sipper, there’s a hybrid model on offer. Those in search of a little more driving excitement can opt for a turbocharged N Line. And for everyone else, there are the standard versions, all of which are armed with standout looks, a ton of technology features and competent on-road manners that make it the most competitive Elantra sedan to date.

One thing is for sure, the Elantra isn’t just another underwhelming face in the crowd. Hyundai’s entry is visually out-there with a mammoth grille, slim headlights, fast roofline and prominent sharp lines on the side and rear end. The creases show up particularly well on my Quartz White test car that rides on 17-inch wheels with black-painted insets that are as visually daring as the rest of the sedan. Is it all a bit much? Maybe to some, but it’s a different and cohesive overall design.

Things inside the Elantra aren’t quite as futuristic. The clean, smartly organized layout features a center stack angled towards the driver. Controls for climate and infotainment are all large and clearly marked, making them easy to use while driving. That’s not to say there aren’t some efforts to visually jazz things up, though. The four-spoke steering wheel reminds me of a monster from Space Invaders and a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster — optional on the Elantra SEL and standard on range-topping Limited — is snazzy with different design themes for each drive mode.
Then there’s the dummy panel to the left side of the Elantra’s gauge cluster. There’s a circular graphic with a horizontal line in the middle making it look like it should be an air vent. In the Elantra N Line this piece of real estate houses the drive mode dial, but in the regular models it’s dead space that doesn’t do anything. Maybe it’s a good place to stick a Post-It note?
As for space, there’s a healthy helping of it inside the Elantra — 99.4 cubic feet of passenger room to be exact, pushing it into the EPA’s midsize classification. Headroom and legroom are generous in front and back, while materials throughout are acceptable. Soft leather wraps the steering wheel, the cloth on the cushy seats is nice and most touchpoints are soft and of high quality. You’ll still bump into hard, but nice-looking plastics on the transmission tunnel and backseat door panels, however.
The Elantra’s interior is nice, but some there’s quite a bit of hard plastic in there.

Technology-focused
On the tech front, the Elantra SEL comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen with large shortcut buttons and knobs for volume and radio tuning. Like the gauge cluster, the screen displays vibrant colors and graphics, but is also responsive to inputs to control the optional eight-speaker Bose audio setup, Bluetooth and wireless integration of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The touchscreen grows to 10.2-inches, but oddly that removes wireless CarPlay and Android Auto capability instead requiring a wired connection for both.
To power-up phones, my SEL sports an available wireless charge pad located in the base of the center console. There you’ll also find a 12-volt outlet and two USB ports. Sadly, no power points are within easy reach of backseat passengers. Android users can also enjoy the benefits of Hyundai Digital Key that lets drivers unlock and start the Elantra through a smartphone app that’s optional on the SEL and standard on Limited cars.
The tech buffet continues with a hearty list of advanced driver-assistant systems onboard the Elantra. Forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, a driver-attention monitor and Safe Exit Alert are all standard issue. My SEL tester is further enhanced with available adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. 
The Elantra’s list of safety technology features is robust.

Solid daily driver
For anyone looking for a competent commuter, the Elantra is certainly up to the task. Powering this sedan is a 2.0-liter I4 making 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, connected to a continuously variable transmission. Together, they return an EPA-estimated 31 miles per gallon in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, which isn’t shabby.
The Elantra’s engine is smooth but doesn’t feel particularly powerful. It adequately gets the job done romping around town, though response at throttle tip-in is a little lazy even when you have the car in Sport mode. For things like merging onto the freeway, you’ll need to really lean into the right pedal to seamlessly blend in with traffic. Thankfully, the CVT doesn’t sound like a hive of angry bees in Sport mode when booting it and hanging onto ‘gears’ longer. It also offers manual shift capabilities, but you’re better off forgetting about that, ’cause it’s real slow to carry out commands.

Chassis tuning follows the drivetrain’s lead, being respectable for daily-driving duties. Body motions are nicely controlled when rounding corners at a normal clip, but pushing harder results in the front washing out. The Elantra’s ride gets a touch crashy when it encounters consecutive bumps and ruts, and generally doesn’t feel as buttoned-up as competitors like the Honda Civic and Mazda3. The steering has a numb spot on center and lacks feeling, while the brakes are stout, delivering confident muscle and modulation.
So, the Elantra isn’t going to rock your socks off from a driving engagement standpoint, but it’s comfortable for the most part and impressively quiet while rolling down the road. It also handles itself quite well through light snow with the Kumho Majesty Solus all-season tires.
How I’d spec it
When building my Elantra, I’d stick with a mid-grade SEL version like the one pictured here, which starts at $21,905 including $1,005 for destination. In fact, I’ll take the white paint job, too, because of how well it shows off the exterior lines and creases. From there, I’ll check the box for the $950 Convenience Package to get the cool LCD gauge cluster, wireless charge pad and heated front seats. Tossing in $155 for floor mats results in a $23,010 price tag to slide in under my test car’s $25,110 bottom line.

Strong compact sedan case
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra starts at $20,655, giving it a lower cost of entry than the $22,245 Civic, $21,645 Mazda3 and $21,020 Toyota Corolla, but higher than the $18,885 Kia Forte and $19,990 Volkswagen Jetta.
Out of that list of compact sedans, the new Elantra is unquestionably the visual standout of the bunch, offering an extensive dose of tech and a reassuring 10-year powertrain warranty to boot. While its drive character is far from thrilling, it’s a competent and comfortable ride for most driving situations. All of that together combines to produce the most compelling Elantra to date.

The 2019 VW Jetta GLI Follows the GTI’s Template
Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised; other times it’s not. The latest iteration of Volkswagen’s Jetta GLI seems to be exactly what we were expecting—a return to being a GTI with a trunk—and that’s about as pleasant a nonsurprise as we could ask for.
We’ll list the details, but hard-core VW aficionados can probably guess ’em on their own. The turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter EA288 four-cylinder delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel (for those keeping track, that’s 18 hp and 41 lb-ft more than the previous-gen GLI) and drives the front wheels through a six-speed stick or a seven-speed DSG auto. There’s a torque-sensing limited-slip diff and bigger brakes. The suspension uses struts up front and a multilink independent rear setup in place of the regular Jetta’s torsion beam, all tuned for a sportier drive and sitting 0.6 inches lower than the standard Jetta. If all this sounds familiar, it should: It’s pretty much a carbon-copy of the GTI’s spec sheet.
As expected, there are plenty of visual cues to differentiate the GLI from lesser Jettas. The blacked-out grille gets red trim, there’s a spoiler on the trunklid, and the brake calipers are painted in red, as on the GTI. The 18-inch wheel design is unique to the hottest Jetta. Red stitching and accents bring some color to the all-black interior. The options list will include many of the greatest hits from the Jetta 1.4T, including a panoramic sunroof, 10-color ambient lighting, a BeatsAudio sound system, and a digital instrument panel in place of traditional dials.
If there’s anything even approaching a surprise, it’s the addition of a 35th Anniversary model, which will be distinguished by its blacked-out roof, mirror caps, spoiler, and wheels, the latter with a red stripe, along with a few unique interior details. The 35th Anniversary car will also get the DCC adaptive dampers as standard, which brings us to one unpleasant surprise: DCC will only be offered on the 35th Anniversary edition. (Our prediction: Once the pricier Anniversary cars are gone, DCC will become available in other GLIs. Check back in a year and see if we got that one right.)
Obviously, the big discussion among VW heads will be GLI vs GTI, sedan versus hatchback. With the GLI’s larger size, you might expect weight to be the defining factor. But while VW hasn’t published a curb weight for the new GLI, the regular Jetta outweighs the Golf by a mere 15 to 25 pounds depending on trim and transmission, and we don’t expect much difference between the sportiest versions, either. We’re hatchback fans ourselves, for whatever that’s worth.
We found the previous-gen Jetta GLI to be a little too cushy and not as tossable as we’d have liked, and it lived its life in the long shadow cast by the excellent and well-rounded GTI, although it was still a massive improvement over the base-model Jetta. The latest, MQB-platform-based Jetta is a much better driving car (the Golf and GTI are also on the MQB architecture), so perhaps the new GLI will comport itself more in the manner of its hot-hatchback sibling. If it does, they’ll be able to hear us cheering in Wolfsburg.
